Bishop shocks participants with truthful teaching at gay and lesbian Catholic conference

Add Bishop Jamie Soto, Co-Adjutor of Sacramento, California to our Bishops with Backbone list.

Bishop Soto was invited by the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries to speak at it's fall conference. He accepted the invititation to be the keynote speaker and did the unthinkable to the dismay of the audience: He catechized them. Several people walked out during his talk and the host later apologized to the audience explaining, "On behalf of the board, I apologize. We had no idea Bishop Soto was going to say what he said."

From the California Catholic Daily: Bishop Soto stuns national homosexual ministries conference. Emphasis mine. Comments in red and in brackets.

“At least five members of the audience walked out”
Bishop Soto stuns national homosexual ministries conference

(Editor’s Note: For the complete text of the bishop’s speech, see related story in today’s edition, “It is sinful.”)

When two Catholics from Southern California learned that Sacramento Coadjutor Bishop Jaime Soto was to be the keynote speaker at the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries conference in Long Beach on Sept. 18, they decided to attend themselves to see and hear the talk in person. They say what they witnessed was a bishop who “courageously but gently” gave a clear presentation of Church teaching on sexuality.

After California Catholic Daily reported on Bishop Soto’s plans to attend and speak at the conference (“Birds of a feather?” Sept. 15, 2008), many readers expressed disapproval or worry over how to interpret the soon-to-be Bishop of Sacramento’s decision. Bishop Soto will take over the diocese from retiring Bishop William Weigand on Nov. 30. The National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries, based in Berkeley, is a network of local ministries that has the reputation of taking, at best, an ambiguous stance on the moral character of homosexuality and homosexual acts [an interesting note is that among the many "ambiguous and not so ambiguous links on the site of this organization, no where to be found is a link to the sanctioned Catholic apostolate, Courage, which was inspired by Terrence Cardinal Cooke. The apostolate ministers to people with homosexual orientation and helps them to live the same kind of chaste life that other single people must live.]

But there was nothing ambiguous about Bishop Soto’s remarks to the group. “Sexual relations between people of the same sex can be alluring for homosexuals, but it deviates from the true meaning of the act and distracts them from the true nature of love to which God has called us all,” Bishop Soto said. “For this reason, it is sinful. Married love is a beautiful, heroic expression of faithful, life-giving, life-creating love. It should not be accommodated and manipulated for those who would believe that they can and have a right to mimic its unique expression."

At least five members of the audience walked out during the bishop’s address. When he finished speaking, there was general silence -- with only a very small number applauding.

The chairman of the conference then announced that the bishop would answer questions at a reception that would be held in another room. [He didn't just throw the teachings of the Church out there then head out a side door - he stayed to talk about what he said]. That led to widespread expressions of disapproval from members of the audience, who said they wanted to be able to express their responses immediately. It was agreed that those who wanted to speak would line up. The bishop was told twice by the chairman that he was free to leave if he wanted -- or to stay and listen. Bishop Soto stayed and sat quietly listening to every response.

A series of about eight speakers came to the microphone to express their unhappiness with what the bishop had said -- and what they felt he had not said. One woman said, in essence, "We know what the Church says. What we wanted you to talk about is the value of our lived experience as lesbian women and gay men."

Two speakers -- one man and one woman -- thanked the bishop for his address and voiced their agreement with what he had to say.

While the audience members were responding to the bishop’s remarks, a board member of the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries came up to one of the tables in the room and said, "On behalf of the board, I apologize. We had no idea Bishop Soto was going to say what he said."

Just like single people who choose to be single, or like those who want to be married but cannot find a spouse, all are called to chastity, regardless of sexual orientation. I don't know who it was, but one of the priests on EWTN once explained that our brothers and sisters with homosexual inclinations carry a much heavier cross in life. For many, marriage is not an option leaving celibacy as the only option. We should have compassion for everyone, but what the bishop teaches is that ministry involves truth, not ambiguity or false charity.

It is refreshing to see that a bishop is willing to stand up and teach the truth and make himself available for discussion.

McCain and Obama on Catholic Issues

The National Catholic Register is one of the few publications to which I still subscribe. They have a website and about 30% of the content is available online, but the rest requires a subscription.

Thankfully, they have opened up a list I read in the hard-copy edition about positions McCain and Obama take on issues of importance to many Catholics. The list uses actual records to show the candidates positions. Some of these may surprise you. It covers everything from "life" issues to school vouchers and more.

Go read: McCain and Obama on ‘Catholic’ Issues and pass it along.

First Things Blog - On Bishops, politicians and reporters

There is a very good commentary by Fran Maier on the First Things Magazine blog called, The Real Problem with Bishops.

It starts out with this line which caught my eye: This just in: It turns out that the problem with America’s Catholic bishops is that they’re not Protestants. The article goes on to talk about bishops and politicians. I thought this was an excellent point:

Which brings us back to that seeming ringleader of the doctrine posse, Archbishop Charles Chaput. The archbishop stands accused of the “extreme” view that public leaders who claim to be Catholic should actually behave that way on important issues. It’s a bit like the similarly extreme view that people who claim to be married should act accordingly; otherwise, they’re lying.

New Cathedral in Los Angeles and Speculation about Archbishop of Detroit

Rocco Palmo who writes for the UK Tablet from America, has a piece up on his blog about the dedication today of the Oakland's new Cathedral of Christ the Light. This modern architecture has sparked considerable discussion on the web and has drawn plenty of jabs in the blogosphere. Rocco's headline for the blogpost - In Oakland, Liftoff - gave me a chuckle and I knew instinctively before reading a word that it had to do something with that cathedral.

This style of architecture is not my cup of tea, in fact, I would probably find it difficult to lift my thoughts to God in such an environment. However, there are some good and interesting things to note. At the bottom of this post you can see a video which walks you through the architecture and grounds. I highly recommend watching it through to the end.

We are reminded about the 1989 earthquake which destroyed the older, traditional cathedral named after St. Francis de Sales. The video points out that the nearly 600,000 Catholics in the diocese have been without a cathedral....until now.

I said there were some good and interesting things to note, if you can get past the architecture. They preserved original church art salvaged from the destroyed buildings and refurbished. I don't know if any of it is in the main cathedral or elsewhere on the property. There is more than just the church. The site includes a mausoleum which is available to Catholics in the diocese. It also has a kitchen they plan to use to feed the poor, and a place where the uninsured can find healthcare. I don't know if this will be a volunteer effort, or what, but I've not heard of a medical clinic housed within parish grounds before. As i said, "interesting".

I could not see the Tabernacle in the video, but it was mentioned in the context of having space for up to 75 people to pray before Our Lord. I kept waiting as I watched the video to see where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. It appears to be in a central location, not cast off to the side, but I can't be sure and have not seen any other pictures on the web. It's a sign of the times, and perhaps a sign of the work our bishops need to do to assist the faithful in understanding that the Eucharist is the Source and Summit. When we first enter a Catholic church or cathedral, the first thing we should do is to look for the Blessed Sacrament and greet our Lord. And, so it should be when such videos are produced.

SPECULATION: VIGNERON HEADED TO DETROIT?
Bishop Allen Vigneron of Oakland, formerly an auxiliary bishop of Detroit, inherited the project which got underway in 2000, when he took the helm in 2003. It is interesting to note that Rocco makes a connection between this dedication Mass and Cardinal Maida's approaching 79th birthday early next year at the very bottom of his post:

On an in-house note, with Cardinal Adam Maida approaching his 79th birthday early next year, there are those who maintain that today's rites won't just open the doors to Oakland's new mother-church, but the long-delayed appointment of a new archbishop of Detroit... since today's a day to celebrate what is, though, more on the rest later.

However, I have my doubts about Bishop Vigneron taking the helm in Detroit, but the timing would seem right. There had been rumors that an appointment would be made this fall - September/October time frame. Among others rumored have been Archbishop John J. Myers of Newark back in 2006, Archbishop Chaput (whom I personally believe will end up in New York), and Bishop Wenski of Orlando. This means it will probably be someone that no one ever heard of.

Ok - now the promised video of Oakland's new Cathedral.

40 Days 'til Election 2008: A Call to Prayer and Sacrifice

There is much at stake in this election year and something has been on my mind: With 40 days left until the election, Catholics, and other Christians wanting to join us, should consider treating this pre-election period like Lent, with prayer, fasting, abstaining, and sacrifices. It is important to have trust in God.

Whatever you do, don't worry about not being involved for the full 40 days. If you should stumble on this post even 1 day before the election, DO SOMETHING suggested below because it has value.

Encourage your friends to join in this effort. Send them a link to this post (just right-click over the time-stamp at the bottom and choose "copy shortcut", then paste it into an email).

There have been hits to this blog from 155 countries. You don't have to be an American to pray for a good outcome to this election. Please join us.

PRAYER
Prayer is always pleasing to God, especially when we follow through at times when we least feel like it or would rather be doing something else. There are many ways we can pray.

CatholicVote.com has a page dedicated to prayer for the election with links and several suggestions which includes things like the Election Novena which the bishops are asking us to pray, as well as devotions like the Rosary, and more. Even if you can't make a consistent daily commitment, do what you can, when you can. It is most pleasing to God when you pray at times when you least feel motivated, or would rather be doing something else. Here's more...

  • Daily Mass, or if you have not been getting to Sunday Mass, start going (after confession - see below).
  • Adoration (spend time before the Blessed Sacrament)
  • Spend time in silent meditation

SACRIFICES & OTHER IDEAS

Some of the ideas here are applicable to our Protestant brothers and sisters who may be reading and I understand that others may not. If you are not Catholic or struggle with understanding the relevance of some of these things, please join us in the simple things with which you are comfortable. Some of these require much deeper explanations than I can get into here so I will consider them for future post topics. For now, if you want to understand why Catholics "offer it up" when it comes to suffering, I encourage you to explore the subject further in the text of a talk given by Dr. Scott Hahn.

Here is a list of worthy things to do these next 40 days until the election (not necessarily all, but vary them from day to day, or go for broke on as many as you can):

  • Go to confession (K of C has great guide if it has been a while; and here is an excellent examination of conscience). Go frequently and be sure to thank God for the Sacrament.
  • Fasting. Can you go on 3 meals a day with no snacks, or less? Or, eat more modestly the next 40 days.
  • Abstaining. You can abstain from many things from TV and podcasts to certain favorite drinks, deserts, smoking, alcohol, and other things. Even where you can't completely abstain, go with less of something. Offer that suffering up.
  • Visiting. Is there someone that could use your company? How about an elderly neighbor or relative? Offer up the sacrifice of that time for the sake of a good outcome of the election.
  • Almsgiving. Gas prices are high, food is high and in these times families and parishes are struggling to make ends meet. When we struggle with our own households, imagine how parishes are struggling. Donations go down at these times in everything from foodbanks to parishes at times when money, food and other items are needed most. Can't give money? Clean out your cupboard or closet and donate those things. Offer up that time and sacrifice for a good outcome to the election.
  • Work. Whatever you are doing, lift your thoughts to God and offer Him the work you are doing for a good outcome to this election.
  • Apostolate work. Help out at some apostolate or do some kind of service work and offer it up. From soup kitchens to praying in front of clinics, it can all be done and offered to God. The 40 days for life group begins a nationwide effort for the unborn Wednesday (see info at the Archdiocese of Denver website). Offer that time up for the unborn, as well as for the election which will strongly affect the rights of the unborn for good or for bad. Go pray in front of an abortion clinic during hours of operation with groups like the Helpers of God's Precious Infants during these 40 days.

Do you have other ideas? Please add them to the combox.

It is important to note that our sacrifices should be kept to ourselves and despite our sufferings, we should not let others on to them. Children will learn from their parents. Recruit your children to pray and offer sacrifices for the Election. Click on the pic below for meditation and see more references below.

Below is a prayer to Mary, asking for her intercession. John Martignoni explains in this 2 minute apologetics YouTube clip Catholic thought on praying to Mary and the saints.

An Election Prayer to Mary

O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of abortion and threaten the sanctity of family life. Grant our country the wisdom to proclaim that God’s law is the foundation on which this nation was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the culture of death and the strength to build a new Culture of Life.

Trusting in your most powerful intercession, we pray…

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To thee do we come, before thee we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer us. Amen.

September 23, 2008 - St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Today is the feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina who was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002. I would like to share one of his writings, found in Padre Pio of Pietrelcina - Letters III. The letter to Francesca of Foggia was dated October 30th, 1915.

Blessed be the Lord who comforts us in all our afflictions, exclaimed the apostle, Saint Paul. Well, my daughter, may Jesus console your spirit also, tossed about in the stormy sea. But do not be afraid because the storm that surrounds your spirit will calm down and you will not be submerged. The little ship of your spirit always has the strong anchor of trust in divine goodness.

Have trust, dear daughter, because the Lord is always with you, as he was in the past. How could you believe it to be otherwise? IF this were the case, as your imagination would have you believe, there would be reason to despair.

Who sustained you up to now in time of spiritual and physical suffering? It was Jesus. Therefore he was with you and he loved you. He will still always be with you and he continues to love you. He will have to perfect the work he began in you.

Be humble and let Jesus work freely within you. And you prepare a pure, contrite, heart, free from all uneasiness since this is a great impediment to the Lord's freely working within you.

You tell me you went astray along the path to perfection during the first years of devout life. I don't want to establish what truth there is in this free assertion of yours. I merely insist on telling you, in the Lord, to cast aside this conviction of yours once and for all; a conviction which, for that matter is a pure temptation. So when you are assailed by fears for the past, think of it as lost in the ocean of heavenly goodness, then turn your mind to the present in which Jesus is with you and loves you; think of the future, when Jesus will reward your faithfulness and resignation, or rather think of all the graces he has poured out on you and which you certainly have not deliberately abused. Hence, I would ask you in the sweet Lord to cast aside all fears as far as possible - for nobody is asked to do what is impossible - and always have faith and love.

My good daughter, trust int he Lord, in his forgiveness and protection. Oh yes! You can even rest tranquilly on the bosom of divine mercy, as a tender little child rets in the arms of it's mother.

Once again, therefore, I assure you that Jesus is with you. Is it possible that Jesus is far from you while you call on him, pray to him, and seek him with ardent desire? How is it possible for the spring of living water flowing from the Heart of God to be far from a soul that runs to it like a thirsty deer?

But will you retort that you are not satistfied because you feel devoured by an unquenchable thirst, and precisely for this reason you wish to doubt that Jesus is close to you.

No, it is not as you would have it. The unquenchable thirst that devouts you arises because it has not yet reached the end of it's journey; it is not yet totally immersed in the eternal fountain, which can not take place while we are in a pilgrim state. Woe to the soul when it considers itself satisfied here on earth, because it would be the beginning of its downfall and it would be deceived.

Be calm, revive your faith, your trust in God. Be humble and submissive to the divine will and thus nothing will be able to harm your spirit.

Persecution of Christians around the world

Yesterday we recalled the martyrdom of Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions who were killed for the faith in Korea during persecutions of the early 1800's. The day before we celebrated the feast day of St. Januarius, a bishop martyred by beheading around 300 A.D. during the Diocletion persecutions. The Catholic Encyclopedia explains:

In the Breviary a longer account is given. There we are told that "Timotheus, President of Campania," was the official who condemned the martyrs, that Januarius was thrown into a fiery furnace, but that the flames would not touch him, and that the saint and his companions were afterwards exposed in the amphitheatre to wild beasts without any effect. Timotheus declaring that this was due to magic, and ordering the martyrs to be beheaded, the persecutor was smitten with blindness, but Januarius cured him, and five thousand persons were converted to Christ before the martyrs were decapitated.

I bring up these martyrs because news from around the world reminds us that persecution is not something that belonged alone to yesteryear. It is alive and well today in many forms. But, nothing should draw our attention more than when people are being killed for the faith and suffering physical torment. Here are just a few headlines:

Please keep our brothers and sisters in distant lands in your prayers.

Unbelievable: Despicable Attack by Obama on Abortion Survivor

I have to stop thinking that I have heard and seen everything. Every day something else comes out that tops something else. Last night, I made a post about a columnist who suggested that it was "immoral" for Sarah Palin to bring her disabled son into the world.

Now, Obama attacks an ad made by 31 year old Gianna Jessen who survived an attempt to snuff out her life through a saline abortion. First, please watch this discussion on Fox News about the Born Alive Infants Protection act which Obama voted AGAINST. This is a good dialogue to comprehend what it is all about.

EDIT 9:51am: Do watch this all the way to the end - it is nearly 10 minutes and gets contentious but stick with it. At one point, Alan Colmes - Sean Hannity's co-host, asks why nurse Jill Stanek did not seek medical care for the baby with Down Syndrome that she rocked until it died following a botched abortion. The answer is very simple: It was not law at the time to treat such babies. The abortionist - a doctor capable of giving life-saving care - would not help the baby and other doctors would intervene. This was practice at certain hospitals and clinics until President George Bush signed a law requiring medical care for these babies who survive abortion (thanks to Stanek). Alan Colmes did not do his homework.

Now, here again is the short ad by BornAliveTruth.org. Note also, that this is not a McCain sponsored ad, but done by a private organization.

Here is the disgusting response by Barack Obama who calls the ad above one of "McCain's sleaziest ever". What is truly sleezy is Obama not accepting responsibility (lying) for what is on public record and trying to make McCain and Jessen look like liars (when McCain was not even involved in the making of the video). Even if McCain were involved with the video, Obama's record stands on it's own.

Gianna Jessen had something to say about the above ridiculous ad:

Statement from Gianna Jessen: “Mr. Obama is clearly blinded by political ambition given his attack on me this week. All I asked of him was to do the right thing: support medical care and protection for babies who survive abortion – as I did 31 years ago. He voted against such protection and care four times even though the U.S. Senate voted 98-0 in favor of a bill identical to the one Obama opposed. In the words of his own false and misleading ad, his position is downright vile. Mr. Obama said at the recent Saddleback Forum that the question of when babies should get human rights was above his pay grade. Such vacillation and cowardice in public policy almost left me to die and no one should have to go through what I went through.”

Jill Stanek is a nurse who was fired after exposing to the public this barbaric practice. It was heartbreaking to read how she and other nurses, before she blew the whistle, would take turns holding these babies as they died so they wouldn't be left on a cold shelf alone. Here is her response:

"It is despicable, repulsive and beneath contempt that Barack Obama would attack Gianna Jessen. She is a courageous abortion survivor and living miracle who would not be with us today if Obama's policies had been in place when she was born. Mr. Obama continues to mislead the American people on this issue, he voted four times against medical care and protection for babies who survive abortions in the Illinois State Senate, while the U.S. Senate was voting 98-0 to pass an identical bill. Mr. Obama needs to come forward and tell the American people that he understands people like Gianna Jessen, and that he will support and enforce Born Alive Infant protections -- that these are living, breathing human beings who have come into our world and deserve protection in the law and should receive medical care at health care facilities. These babies have the same rights as the rest of us."

Disgusting: Columnist suggests Sarah Palin was wrong to bring disabled son into the world

Just when you thought you heard it all....

Nicholas Provenzo of the Center for the Advancement of Capitalism calls Sarah Palin's choice to bring Trig into the world, "immoral".

There is an excellent commentary by someone who goes by the name, "Disabled Politico" at Disaboom - a website for the disabled - on this subject. Go read: Columnist Attacks Trig Palin, Accusing Mothers of Babies with Downs of Burdening Society. In part it reads:

Provenzo goes on to to accuse Sarah Palin of participating in "the worship of retardation." He also posits that describing the selective abortion of fetuses diagnoses with disabilities as a form of Eugenics is a "dirty little slur" used by "anti-abortion zealots."

Perhaps Nicholas Provenzo should discuss the "marginal productivity" of adults with Down's Syndrome with Blair Williamson, a working actor with Down's Syndrome. He ought also to note that, for each Down's Syndrome baby detected and aborted, some estimates say that two non-disabled babies are miscarried due to invasive testing. He could also stand to note that young people with learning disabilities are applying to college at record rates. Maybe he should try to talk with Katherine Crouch, a woman with Down's Syndrome who's spending her time volunteering for the McCain campaign and recently met Sarah Palin. Then again, it's election season: Katherine's probably too busy to talk to Nicholas.
Michael Voris of St. Michael's Media and the newly launched, Real Catholic TV, has a commentary well worth watching on this, as well.

Born Alive Truth.....an Ad to Watch

The Ad below features abortion survivor Gianna Jessen. Yes, some babies survive the horrors of the abortion process and are born alive. Nurse, Jill Stanek knows - she was fired after exposing the practice in the hospital where she worked whereby such babies are left on a shelf to die - alone.

Gianna suffers from Cerebral Palsy as a result of the attempt to snuff out her life in the womb. Her life story is incredibly inspiring because her attitude is so positive and she doesn't let anything get in her way. This is an incredible woman who puts a face on abortion. I have seen her interviewed and you can't be anything but grateful for life and moved by her resolve in the most simplest things in life.

From her bio :

Gianna is a Christian. Her life was given to her by the grace of God. She shouldn't be walking, but more miraculous still; she should not even be alive. Gianna's biological mother was 17 when she had a saline abortion in her third trimester. Many Americans don’t realize it is legal to have an abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy. After being burned alive for approximately 18 hours in the womb from the saline solution, Gianna was delivered alive in a Los Angeles County abortion clinic. Her medical records state, "born during saline abortion"...this is what caused her Cerebral Palsy.

Senator Obama opposed the Born Alive Infants Protection Act - a measure which would give babies like Gianna the right to life saving treatment should they be born alive in the process of an abortion. The Senator also supports abortions at any stage of the pregnancy, right through the third trimester - a time when babies nowadays easily survive with help.

Time for a break.....and, recent posts!

This belongs to the Legion of Mary, one of many apostolates at Assumption Grotto. It was at a table they had set up on Assumption Day. At the bottom of this post is a closer look at the entire figure.

Things have been hectic of late and, as a result, I can't find my kitchen or washing machine, and can barely find my way to the car from the grass length. With rain finally stopping tomorrow, hopefully I can cut grass when I get home. I have a about a 12 x 15 patch at my condo that is cut with a push-mower (we actually have private courtyards.....next year, I'm cementing in the yard).

With all of the activity of late, I need to take a break from blogging for a few days. Unless there is some hot breaking news, like the naming of an Archbishop for Detroit, I'm going to try to get caught up on other things.
I have a backlog of many pictures yet to be edited and given to people, and other things that need to be done. The problem is that I have such an endless list of such things that even having dropped out of choir, I still can't seem to catch up. Right now, my house needs attention.....bad.
I'll share a funny story. As bad as my house is, my poor mother lost her power Saturday night. And, just minutes after I dropped her and her groceries off after Mass, I got the call. I didn't get home yet when I had to turn around and go back after her, and the refigerated/frozen groceries. It rapdily got humid and with her condition I was not leaving her there. So....... I brought her back to.....my messy house.

Duh

Here are some of my recent posts and other posts of interest:

And, while we are at it, lets keep in our prayers those who are suffering from natural disasters and accidents around the country, and the world.

Water, water everywhere in metro Detroit (part 2)

I was faced with emptying the dishwasher so....... I decided to go take pictures of local flooding before it got too dark (no wonder I don't get anything done at home!!!). I made a post on this earlier, showing evidence that the car above was submerged overnight before the water level went down as rain stopped. But, it started raining again as the remnants of Hurrican Ike reached the area. And it rained, and rained, and rained some more. Viola! The car is now submerged. I am told that the owner could not start the car and was going to donate it. Now, it looks like it might be good for some scrap parts. More pictures of the flooding in Macomb County around 15 Mile Rd. and Schoenherr.

As you can see by the sign above, the veternarian clinic I parked in has a place to run dogs out back and to put their waste. It was interesting to get a pic of that sign and waste receptacle with a partially submerged car in the background. Talk about waste!

The Clinton River at it's best....

The local wildlife was thrilled. I couldn't tell if this was a beaver or a woodchuck. Whatever it was, when my flash went off, it took of fast in the water across the river. It's a grainy photo because I was attempting to protect my camera in the pouring rain by hiding it partially under my hood, only to have the flash obstructed (hence, the grainy, dark pic).

The full set of pics from 11:00am and again at 7:30pm can be found at my smugmug page for the floods of 9-14-2008.

Water, water everywhere in metro Detroit....

Above, a car parked overnight in a veternarian's parking lot along side the Clinton River at 15 Mile Rd. near Schoenherr had been partially submerged overnight. Looking closer (click the pic), you can see a "grassy-line" where the water had topped out. The windows were steamed, the headlights had water in them, and water was dripping from every seam. I was in this same parking lot last night and the water looked as it did when I stopped by this morning around 11:00am when I took my mother back to her home which had lost power the night before.

Below, you see the river in the background. The water backed off after it flooded this parking lot and that of a funeral home next door. The mud line was visible. But, more rain has been falling for hours, sometimes very heavy. I am hoping to see a break in the action so I can go up the road and get a few more pics of the swollen river.

You can plainly see a line that the Clinton River crossed, but that isn't the river's edge. It's much further to the right (and deeper). The spot from which I took this picture was about waist deep during the night.

I took my mother a few more miles away from her apartment before taking her home to see the flooding at the Fernhill Country Club. The Clinton River winds right through the golf course and floods it periodically. The river is actually quite narrow normally in this area. In the photos below, you can see a few of the "greens" peaking above the water line.

Photopost: Helpers of God's Precious Infants Fall 2008 Prayer Vigil

Msgr. William Easton, pastor of Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak lifts the monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament during Benediction of the faithful immediately after people returned to Church after standing out in the rain, praying Holy Rosary outside of an abortion clinic in Lathrup Village.

The Helpers of God's Precious Infants held their fall prayer vigil outside of an abortion clinic on Southfield Road in Lathrup Village this time. Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Flores celebrated the Mass and led the 4 block procession with Rosary. Mass began at 7:30am at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak and all are grateful to Msgr. Easton for hosting this time. We begin with the Mass. I am told that Msgr. Easton approximated 500 people at the Liturgy. Then, you will see procession pictures (in the pouring rain), followed by a few shots outside the clinic. Not everyone was able to make it to the outdoor vigil and it is good when they come to the Mass. Most who were at the vigil came back for Benediction, followed by refreshements in a parish conference room.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

On this day last year, September 14, 2007, Fr. Eduard Perrone, the celebrant elevates the Chalice in the first public Mass - a Solemn High Mass - using the 1962 Missal at Grotto in about 40 years. It was the fruit of Summorum Pontificum - the motu proprio by Pope Benedict XVI which allowed for broader use of the Mass.

I deeply regret that I could not make it to Assumption Grotto today for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The last I had heard, Fr. Perrone was not going to be able to celebrate a Solemn High because there were not enough priests available who celebrate according to the 1962 Missal. We have a number of priests who celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form, including two associates, but circumstances just didn't allow for a Solemn High. That is, unless something changed since last week (feel free to explain in the combox how it went today and who had the Mass).

Reminder: Helpers of God's Precious Infants Vigil Tomorrow

Tomorrow, the Helper's of God's Precious Infants fall prayer vigil is taking place in front of the notorious Hodari clinic, with Mass beginning at 7:30am at the Shrine of the Little Flower on Woodward. See details further down.

Rain is predicted for tomorrow, with a high in the low 70's. Consider that the murder of the innocents continues whether it rains, snows, or sleets. Standing in the rain is yet one more thing we can offer up. Pack some warm rain-gear. In fact, I'm going to see if I can find a raincoat tonight. I've been needing one for years. Or, get one of those clear plastic rain covers to go over a light jacket.

Do come to the Mass which will be celebrated by Bishop Flores, Detroit's newest Auxiliary Bishop.

Msgr. Philip J. Reilly, the priest who founded Helpers of God's Precious Infants, which began in New York, was praying out side of a clinic on that fateful morning of September 11, 2001. Here, he recounts his experience:

"On that morning the wind was blowing from lower Manhattan across New York Harbor to Brooklyn, namely in the direction where we were counseling. As a result all the soot and debris and dust from the fallen towers came over our heads to the point that it became midnight, at midday... Outside as things kept falling out of the heavens on our heads, inside abortion mill at 43rd and 3rd, they kept killing the unborn babies throughout the morning...I was unable to go to the (bombing) sight during that day because the killing at the clinic continued...

I eventually got to ‘ Ground Zero’. I arrived at Midnight..And then something happened to me at ‘Ground Zero’. (while praying the rosary) With my eyes still closed, I saw something different. What I saw was this:

I didn’t see a building. I saw a womb and in the womb I saw an unborn child, so safe, so secure, so contended and at peace. And suddenly I saw in that womb an object coming in and invading the privacy of the womb, the instrument of the Terrorist, of the abortionist, and the child being frightened with no place to go, no where to hide was being destroyed. And it was then I realized ‘Ground Zero’ is ‘On Going’. ‘On Going Ground Zero’, modern day Golgotha is anywhere peoples lives are being unjustly taken; where innocent lives are being taken and they need rescuers to come and help them.

They need ordinary people doing ordinary things with extraordinary results. ‘On going Ground Zero’ is not far from where most of us live. It is where Golgotha is. It is the place where Christ would go today. It is the place where John and Mary are at the foot of cross with the suffering Christ and it is where we must be.

Today I say to you: “Be not afraid to be rescuers for life at “On Going Ground Zero’. We are called to be rescuers of Christ to the unborn children and their mothers. We are called to Golgotha, to Calvary. Be not afraid to go to Golgotha. If not you, then who? If not now, than when? Go with Mary and John and be the presence of Christ to the people in darkness and despair.

They have been waiting too long. Let us not keep them waiting any longer. God bless you."

- Monsignor Philip J. Reilly
DETAILS AND MICHIGAN CATHOLIC COVERAGE

Michigan Catholic journalist, Bob Delaney, talks about the upcoming prayer vigil in the August 29 issue.

Detroit — Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Flores will join Helpers of God's Precious Infants for a Saturday, Sept. 13, Prayer Vigil for Life outside the Lathrup Village abortion clinic run by abortionist Dr. Alberto Hodari.

Hodari has been one of America's most high-profile abortionists ever since pro-life student activists posted a video of a talk he gave at the Wayne State University medical School in 2007 on the Internet site www.youtube.com.

In the video, Hodari suggests doctors have a right to lie to patients, dismisses ethical concerns about abortion, and tells the students he no longer bothers to wear surgical gloves during abortions or scrub between procedures.

He achieved even greater notoriety after aborted babies were found in his trash in February.

The local Helpers of God's Precious Infants usually draws several hundred participants to its vigils outside abortion clinics in Eastpointe and northeast Detroit. Sidewalk counseling is also a part of the vigils, and then some of the group's members provide counseling outside the clinics on a daily basis.

The vigil outside Hodari's clinic "will be a huge witness to the whole community," said Dan Goodnow, founder and president of the local Helpers group and a member of St. Paul on the Lake Parish in Grosse Pointe Farms.'

"We are really in warfare with the 'culture of death.' It's a battle between good and evil, and we are trying to bring God's love to the community at large," he said.

Besides urging women approaching or leaving a clinic to reconsider having an abortion, sidewalk counselors also offer to put them in contact with crisis pregnancy centers where they can obtain various forms of assistance.

Goodnow said it is very seldom that the initial approach by a sidewalk counselor will deter a woman from even entering an abortion clinic, but some will come back out after sitting for a while in the waiting room: "We've had turnarounds on the table in the back, at the last second before the abortion."

Over the years, he said, their turnaround rate has hovered around one in five women, sometimes approaching one in four. Lately, however, he said it has been more like one in six.

Mary Beckhold, who works with Goodnow, said one of the most gratifying things is when a woman will return to the abortion clinic site – not to go into the clinic, but to show the sidewalk counselors the baby she had after their intervention.

"It's great when they come back with the babies," said Beckhold, a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin (Grotto) Parish in northeast Detroit.

This is some great action we see on the part of individual US Bishops. In this case Bishop Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, and Bishop Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri, have issued a joint pastoral letter on voting and moral responsibility.

KC Bishops on Moral Responsibility, Voting

"Could a Catholic in good conscience vote for a candidate who supports legalized abortion when there is a choice of another candidate who does not support abortion or any other intrinsically evil policy?"

Kansas City, Kansas Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann and Kansas City - St. Joseph Bishop Robert W. Finn address that question and more in their Joint Pastoral dedicated on the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and released today:

Our Moral Responsibility as Catholic Citizens
Joint Pastoral Letter – September 8, 2008
Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann, Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas
Most Reverend Robert W. Finn, Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph

Dear Friends in Christ,

With the approaching general election this November, we believe this to be an important moment for us to address together the responsibility of Catholics to be well informed and well formed voters.

Except for the election of our next President, the people of Northwestern Missouri and Northeastern Kansas will be choosing different candidates for different offices in our two dioceses. Yet the fundamental moral principles that should guide our choices as Catholic voters are the same.

For generations it has been the determination of Catholic Bishops not to endorse political candidates or parties. This approach was initiated by Archbishop John Carroll – the very first Catholic Bishop serving in the United States. It was long before there was an Internal Revenue Service Code, and had nothing to do with a desire to preserve tax-exempt status. Rather the Church in the United States realized early on that it must not tether the credibility of the Church to the uncertain future actions or statements of a particular politician or party. This understanding of the Church’s proper role in society was affirmed in the Second Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern Word: “The Church, by reason of her role and competence, is not identified with any political community nor bound by its ties to any political system. It is at once the sign and the safeguard of the transcendental dimension of the human person.”(Gaudium et Spes n.76)

A Right to Speak Out on Issues

At the same time, it is important to note that the Catholic Church in the United States has always cherished its right to speak to the moral issues confronting our nation. The Church has understood its responsibility in a democratic society to do its best to form properly the consciences of her members. In continuity with the long history of the efforts of American Bishops to assist Catholics with the proper formation of their consciences, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) this past November issued a statement: Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. In that document our brother bishops took care to note: “This statement is intended to reflect and complement, not substitute for, the ongoing teachings of bishops in our own dioceses and states.”

It is in this context that we offer the following reflections to assist the Catholic people of Northwestern Missouri and Northeastern Kansas in forming their consciences in preparation for casting their votes this November........

More ridiculous attacks on Sarah Palin...

It just keeps getting more disgusting....both from LifeNews

I also read a pretty good article today about how Palin has smashed the model for feminists (but I don't think it was a model that represented the vast majority of women from all walks of life, race, creed, religion ). Frankly, I'm sick and tired of these so-called "National Organization of Women" type feminists defining how I'm suppose to think and be. They don't speak for me and I know they don't speak for many women, but the NOW feminists in the media and political circles have had the upper hand. Not any more.

Hmmmm...... I wonder what the average age is of the NOW feminists. Perhaps it's not so much a matter of age, but hair color - gray.

We ain't gonna take it.....anymore.

Archbishop Chaput Speaks Out on Biden's "Meet the Press" segment

From the Archbishop of Denver.....again, and his auxiliary (my emphases in bold).

To Catholics of the Archdiocese of Denver:

When Catholics serve on the national stage, their actions and words impact the faith of Catholics around the country. As a result, they open themselves to legitimate scrutiny by local Catholics and local bishops on matters of Catholic belief. In 2008, although NBC probably didn’t intend it, Meet the Press has become a national window on the flawed moral reasoning of some Catholic public servants.

On August 24, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, describing herself as an ardent, practicing Catholic, misrepresented the overwhelming body of Catholic teaching against abortion to the show’s nationwide audience, while defending her “pro-choice” abortion views. On September 7, Sen. Joseph Biden compounded the problem to the same Meet the Press audience.

Sen. Biden is a man of distinguished public service. That doesn’t excuse poor logic or bad facts. Asked when life begins, Sen. Biden said that, “it’s a personal and private issue.” But in reality, modern biology knows exactly when human life begins: at the moment of conception. Religion has nothing to do with it. People might argue when human “personhood” begins – though that leads public policy in very dangerous directions – but no one can any longer claim that the beginning of life is a matter of religious opinion.

Sen. Biden also confused the nature of
pluralism. Real pluralism thrives on healthy, non-violent disagreement; it requires an environment where people of conviction will struggle respectfully but vigorously to advance their beliefs. In his interview, the senator ob served that other people with strong religious views disagree with the Catholic approach to abortion. It’s certainly true that we need to acknowledge the views of other people and compromise whenever possible – but not at the expense of a developing child’s right to life. Abortion is a foundational issue; it is not an issue like housing policy or the price of foreign oil. It always involves the intentional killing of an innocent life, and it is always, grievously wrong. If, as Sen. Biden said, “I’m prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception,” then he is not merely wrong about the science of new life; he also fails to defend the innocent life he already knows is there.

As the senator said in his interview, he has opposed public funding for abortions. To his great credit, he also backed a successful ban on partial-birth abortions. But his strong support for the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade and the false “right” to abortion it enshrines, can’t be excused by any serious Catholic. Support for Roe and the “right to choose” an abortion simply masks what abortion is, and what abortion does. Roe is bad law. As long as it stands, it prevents returning the abortion issue to the states where it belongs, so that the American people can decide its future through fair debate and legislation.

In his Meet the Press interview, Sen. Biden used a morally exhausted argument that American Catholics have been hearing for 40 years: i.e., that Catholics can’t “impose” their religiously based views on the rest of the country. But resistance to abortion is a matter of human rights, not religious opinion. And the senator knows very well as a lawmaker that all law involves the imposition of some people’s convictions on everyone else. That is the nature of the law. American Catholics have allowed themselves to be bullied into accepting the destruction of more than a million developing unborn children a year. Other people have imposed their “pro-choice” beliefs on American society without any remorse for decades.

If we claim to be Catholic, then American Catholics, including public officials who describe themselves as Catholic, need to act accordingly. We need to put an end to Roe and the industry of permissive abortion it enables. Otherwise all of us – from senators and members of Congress, to Catholic laypeople in the pews – fail not only as believers and disciples, but also as citizens.

We are working to raise $500,000 for crucial renovations to the monastery and also to establish an endowment fund of $1,000,000 for the daily upkeep of the monastery. Our dream is also to raise enough to build a new wing, housing infirmary, library, guest rooms, parlors, and gift shop, although architects estimate that such a wing would cost a whopping 7 million dollars.

The renovations are necessary in order to make our hallways, refectory and kitchen fully accessible to all the nuns and to bring them up to safety codes.

The endowment is direly needed because, in spite of the constant generosity of so many of you, our good benefactors, we are having to dip into our savings every month in order to make ends meet.

The addition of a new wing would allow us to bring our infirmary and guest area up to safety codes, as well as allowing us precious space for the adequate care of the sick which we have never had. There would also be room for private guest visiting areas and for a new library, so intimately related to the life of contemplative nuns.

We are counting on the support of you, our good friends and loyal blog readers, for the success of this capital campaign. For more information, click on the picture or go to http://www.futurefullofhope.com/

I should add that you may occassionally see a comment from "Moniales". Now you know that the comment is coming out of a cloister. I have had many friendly discussions with them.

Hurrican Ike - Hundreds Dead in Cuba, Haiti, as it heads to US

Please pray for the victims of Hurrican Ike. Much suffering is taking place in Haiti, Cuba and surrounding islands.

I just saw this same video on Fox News. The footage shows you the power of a hurricane as waves hitting the coast splash as high as buildings, with residents looking on. If you want to see what can happen with storm surge, here you go.

Please pray for these people and for anyone else in the path of Ike.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Now Joe Biden cites Aquinas on Abortion Issue

Oy vey! Get ready for more public instruction from the bishops. Watch and you'll see what I mean.

This is relativism at it's best folks. That is, different "truths" for different people, when in reality there is one objective truth here. If life begins at conception, you can't sanction the killing of that life because someone else believes otherwise.

It's clear that Mr. Biden is passionate about his position that he accepts the teachings of the Church for himself, but can't impose them on others.

This is a position many people I know take and they are equally passionate. Truly, as distressing as this all seems, that Catholics would protect the killing of other people because others don't believe life begins at conception, this public debate is good. People will have an opportunity to be catechized.

Using his rationale, if a bunch of people standing at a red light see it as green, does it mean they can "go"? The objective truth is that the light is red and can't be green no matter how many people want it to be green. We would defend the need for everyone, for the good of society, to stand at that red light until it truly turns green. Truth is unaffected by what people feel and popular opinion. Truth....is.

BISHOP MORLINO OF MADISON REACTS

There is an audio of a 15 minute homily by Bishop Morlino of Madison who had just saw the interview of Joe Biden before his Mass. He set aside his prepared homily to speak on this topic. I have not yet listened to it, but will later.

In all seriousness, pray for Mr. Biden and others like him who just don't get it.

If anyone is aware of bishops talking out, please drop me a comment here. We'll get a list going.

Abp Chaput's Book, "Render unto Caesar" in NYT best seller list...

Not long ago I told you how excerpts from Archbishop Chaput's book, "Render unto Caesar" made it into the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano as told by Italian Journalist Sandro Magister. In the book he talks about the role of Catholic politicians. Well, it made the NY Times top seller list in slot 27 this week, one notch ahead of Joe Biden's book, Promises to Keep.

Go buy this book - NOW!!! Push it up the list (only "New" purchases affect the Best Seller List).

More bishops speak out on Abortion and Nancy Pelosi's Words

I had a running list of bishops and cardinals who had publicly denounced the misrepresentation of Catholic teaching on abortion by Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). As I suspected, many bishops spoke clearly on this subject in their diocesan papers and elsewhere. Among those notable is Cardinal George of Chicago who issued a letter.

I may eventually update my list, but don't have time now. Instead, I will refer you to Thomas Peters - the American Papist who has a much larger list of bishops and cardinals who spoke out.

INVITATION TO MEET WITH HER BISHOP
Included is also the archbishop of San Francisco, Nierdauer, who publicly invited her for a conversation. Pelosi is said to have accepted the invitation for the private meeting. I won't comment here, but I ask everyone to pray, and pray hard, that the Archbishop receive the grace of courage in the face of defiance, should he encounter it. Further reading and analysis:

Misleading Title at Spirit Daily puts Bishop of Medjugorje in Negative Light

EDIT: Spirit Daily has changed the misleading title sometime on September 4. I applaud the change. The original title is found below in a snapshot.

I don't like to knock spiritual news outlets, and ordinarily, I just ignore those that have a sensationalist focus or spend too much time and effort promoting apparitions not yet approved. Some of these sites will get people all charged up because someone claims to see the Blessed Virgin Mary in their $4.00 cup of capuccino.

Don't get me wrong. I have a deep devotion to Mary as you will find in my many blogposts and photos.

People I know, including my own father now deceased, have cautioned me to never put much stock into any private revelation before the bishop allows a cult following - the first step in the approval process. It basically means that a bishop has not found any reason to prevent a cult following, such as conflicts with doctrine, or behaviors inconsistent with the level of grace that would guide such souls. The cult following was never authorized at Medjugorje. In fact, the bishop actually informed the parish priest - Fr. Tomislav Pervan - otherwise in 1985 after finding conflicts which did not sit well with him.

Fr. Eduard Perrone of Assumption Grotto takes the same approach as my father. You will not find any material from apparitions or other private revelations in church vestibules or the giftshop which have not gone through a certain level of approval. In fact, there are notes hanging on the racks in the back of Church instructing people to clear material with the pastor before putting it out.

Yesterday, I posted the news release out of the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno, the home diocese of Medjugorje, that Fr. Tomislav Vlasic, OFM incurred canonical penalities from the CDF the for ongoing disobedience and some rather odd behavior for a priest, cited in the CDF document (and found throughout the 1990 document by Bishop Pavao Zanic, the previous bishop, now deceased).

The Bishop of Mostar-Duvno has known about this status since the beginning of the year, but did not publicize it. Bishop Peric was recently asked by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Vatican to share the canonical status of Fr. Vlasic with the community, which he did on his website. Why? People have a right to know that if this priest is availing himself for confession, Mass or other sacraments, that he is not authorized (and faces excommunication if he defies the penalties). Penalties handed down by the Vatican.

I was really disappointed to see the title which was used on a very popular website, Spirit Daily. There is no exclusive article....yet, but it leads directly to an article on Catholic Culture. Incidently, Catholic Culture, which reviews Catholic websites on a set of criteria has given Spirit Daily a yellow status for a number of good reasons, with examples cited.

I took a snapshot to show how ridulous this title is. Look carefully at the red title in the left column that I highlighted with a blue rectangle (click to enlarge). It reads: Bishop at Odds with Franciscans says ex-Medjugorje priest disciplined.

Let's look closer at this title:

  1. The Bishop at Odds with Franciscans;
  2. [says] ex-Medjugorje priest disciplined.

1) It's not the bishop who is at odds with the Franciscans!

It has been a number of Franciscans from the Hercegovina Province that are at odds with not only the Bishop, but the Church (in all fairness, there are many good and loyal friars in that province caught in the middle who are humble and obedient to the bishop and the Father General in Rome). This began long before the alleged apparitions of Medjugorje started and resulted in Vatican involvment, as well as the Order of Friars Minor in Rome (see "The decree 'Romanis Pontificibus' definitively implemented" at the website of the General Curia of the Friars Minor in Rome).

You will find some writings on promoter websites for Medjugorje about this decree, typically under headings that make the bishop seem like some kind of villian. This is a great time to re-evaluate how badly you need to frequent such sites as people are regularly scandalized into having harsh, and even sinful feelings, towards an eccesiastical leader who is in full communion with Rome.

If you really think the Vatican is against this bishop as they claim, please write the CDF and ask for his status (keep in mind Rome had no problem asking HIM to let the community know about the status of Fr. Vlasic). These folks are real good at subjective speculation and presenting them as fact, especially when it comes to the Bishop of Mostar-Duvno. They will even attempt to use the Blessed Virgin Mary herself to get you turn on the bishop with contempt, even if only in the silence of your heart (a great time to look for a Marian confessor who is devoted to approved apparitions). These same sources will elevate disobedient Franciscans, some of them disciplined by Rome, in ways that lead you to believe they are headed for canonization and that Rome was somehow duped. In the next breath, they call the bishop disobedient. Once again, write the CDF and ask them if they agree with such accusations and be sure to include the name and url of the website, the owner, and author of the article.

Back to the decree: Those arguments you may find against it may seem compelling in isolation and some were written with good intentions by very smart people. However, the Holy See had context of those arguments, along with other things. We have to trust that the Church acted appropriately because if you argue against this decree which went into effect in 1999, then your beef is not with the bishop, but with Holy Mother Church who issued it. We may all struggle with Church decisions and speculate as to whether those responsible had all of the information they needed. I always tell people, it's a matter of trusting God - that all things needed for that decision were present.

One day, I will go deeper into this decree and the history of the Franciscan order in that territory with some hard to find books that I have on this topic.

2) Is it Bishop Peric who says the priest was disciplined?

No. it was the Vatican. Also, why is he called an "ex-Medjugorje priest". Sure, he's distanced himself from Medjugorje. But, he is well known as a promoter of Medjugorje and considered the "spiritual father" of the Medjugorje apparitions. His writings can be found all over pro-Medjugorje sites where he is deeply, spiritually connected to Medjugorje. Why else would the Vatican ask Bishop Peric - the Bishop of Mostar-Duvno, home diocese of Medjugorje - to share his unfortunate canonical status with the community? He can't be separated from Medjugorje any more than Bugs Bunny can be separated from Warner Bros.

You have to wonder about motives here - that is, why not just say it as it is, rather than use it as an opportunity to slam the apostolic successor of a diocese who is doing what the CDF asked him to do? We'll leave judgment for God. However, I will call out a lack of objectivity. Some will go to great lengths to protect Medjugorje, even to the point of attacking the local Bishop. You see something wrong with this picture? Would Mary approve?

Even if a bishop is wrong about his judgment on an authentic private revelation, the Blessed Mother - a model of humility and obedience, would expect nothing but respect for his office and for his person.

I would think twice before spending time at sites that attack the Church in this fashion because it simply encourages these people in their ways. Please don't kid yourself. It is an attack against the Church, no matter how nicely it's dressed. And, there is often money (advertisements, speaking engagements, tours, etc) at stake in protecting at all costs, the very thing being promoted.

Please pray for Fr. Tomislav Vlasic. The Church is not punishing him, but using tough love to try to bring him home. May God grace him with humility and obedience through Our Lady.

NOTE: I have turned comments off for this post. Typically these posts draw voluminous responses out of promoters and supporters who use cookie-cutter responses from promoter sites. Their views are out there in abundance.

UK Bishop Releases 92-page statement....listing problems in the Church

Scanning the news at Catholic Culture, which just merged with CWNews, this caught my eye (emphasis mine). I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure much of it applies to the Church in the west in general (if that second paragraph is any indication). God bless this bishop. Before things can be first, they must be acknowledged. May other bishops study this document.

English bishop lists Church troubles in blunt, sweeping statement

Parish priests in the Lancaster diocese describe the 92-page statement by Bishop Patrick O'Donoghue as "dynamite," the Catholic Herald reports. Pulling no punches, the bishop speaks about declining attendance, a shortage of priestly and religious vocations, and the failure of Catholics to counteract the corrosive influence of a secularized culture.

The bishop decries the "lack of ongoing formation and trained lay catechists," and laments the fact that "our of ongoing formation and trained lay catechists and prayer... our Church often seems inward looking, self-involved and detached from everyday life of our wider communities." Probing further, he finds that many weaknesses in the Catholic community can be traced to liberal teaching, "dismissing apostolic traditions and the doctrines of the Fathers and giving the place of honour to the fashionable opinions of society."

Bill Bennett takes on Wolf Blitzer on Abstinence Eduation

The left is unfortunately exploiting the pregnancy of Sarah Palin's 17 year-old daughter to denounce abstinence-only education. Despite Barack Obama, and Joe Biden's calls to leave children out of the attacks, many on the left have no qualms using her to promote their agenda. Bennett rightly tells them to go ahead and discuss the issue, but separate the girl from the discussion.

Watch the video....

More discussion:

EDIT: If you really want to see just how deeply the media supports the left, check in at the Media Research Center, which tracks bias. Just click on the link and look at the headlines they are calling out. I'm hoping they will have something about the cover of "US Magazine". It's disgusting. They show a wonderful pic of Palin and her new baby under a headline: Babies, Lies & Scandal. For Obama, they showed a pic of husband and wife hugging under a title of, "Why I love her". There is big double standard here.

Andrea Mitchell: Just some of the uneducated, blue collar females will switch to Palin

The other day I stated that there are two types of feminists, one of which thinks that if you don't agree with their leftist, pro-abort views, then you are just plain stupid, unsophisticated, not professional...uneducated.

Here is proof in an August 31 transcript of Andrea Mitchell being interviewed by Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press. Does anyone else see a pattern over at NBC? Emphasis mine:

Brokaw: ...There are other Republicans who are saying, listen we'll be able to pull those Hillary Clinton voters who are not happy the way Obama treated her across the line. What are the chances of that Andrea?

Mitchel: Well, they think now that they have a story. They have a story of a working mom, she is a colorful character, an Annie Oakley... you know, Annie get your gun. They love her story, but when she tried to talk about Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania, in western Pennsylvania, yesterday at a rally with conservative Republican voters, Hillary Clinton was booed. So, she can use the Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro analogy if she wants to in interviews, she cannot use that at Republican rallies.

She is not appealing to the same women who were really voting or supporting Hillary Clinton on ideological issues but they think that they can peel off some of these working class women, not college educated, who, the blue collar women who were voting for Hillary Clinton and may be more conservative on social causes.
Interesting, eh? Look for lots of this kind of sexism coming right out of the mouths of not a few high-profile women, mostly so-called journalists.

Bishop Martino of Scranton: No Communion for Pro-Abort Politicians

Bishop of Scranton Martino refuses communion for politicians who campaign in favor of abortion rights

BY CHARLES SCHILLINGER
TIMES-SHAMROCK WRITER
Published: Monday, September 1, 2008 4:09 AM EDT

Scranton native Sen. Joe Biden would likely feel at home any day of the week in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Well, any day except possibly Sunday.

The Most Rev. Joseph F. Martino, bishop of Scranton, has strongly supported refusal of Holy Communion for politicians who campaign for or vote in favor of abortion rights.

When asked whether the Democratic vice presidential candidate would be refused Communion should he tour the region, the diocese held firm to its past statements.

“I will not tolerate any politician who claims to be a faithful Catholic who is not genuinely pro-life,” Bishop Martino said in a pastoral letter Sept. 15, 2005, and reiterated this week.

“No Catholic politician who supports the culture of death should approach Holy Communion,” Bishop Martino said. “I will be truly vigilant on this point.”

Bishop Martino has also pointed to the need to privately meet with Catholic politicians and instruct them on the church’s teachings, prior to refusing them Communion.

While willing to reiterate these points, the bishop declined to comment specifically on Biden or any other politician.

Medjugorje: Canonical Status of Fr. Tomislav Vlašić, OFM

EDIT Sept 3, 2008: Some clarification is needed on this about Fr. Tomislav Vlasic. It was some years ago that he distanced himself from Medjugorje physically after running into trouble with the diocese. He moved to Parma, Italy where he set up a new, unauthorized community of men and women named directly below. Bishop Pavao Zanic, the preceding bishop of Mostar, now deceased, discusses the activities of Fr. Tomislav Vlasic throughout the 1990 document, The Truth About Medjugorje.

More trouble on the Medjugorje front, this time out of the CDF which asked the Bishop of Mostar Duvno to notify the people.

The CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH with its letter prot. 144/1985-27164 of 30 May 2008, has authorized me as the local Bishop of the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno to inform the diocesan community of the canonical status of Fr. Tomislav VlaÅ¡ić, the founder of the association “Kraljice mira potpuno Tvoji – po Mariji k Isusu” – (Queen of Peace, totally Yours – Through Mary to Jesus).

The letter signed by the Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Angelo Amato, states the following:

“Within the context of the phenomenon Medjugorje, this Dicastery is studying the case of Father Tomislav VLASIC OFM, originally from that region and the founder of the association ‘Kraljice mira potpuno Tvoji – po Mariji k Isusu’.

On 25 January 2008, through a properly issued Decree, this Dicastery imposed severe cautionary and disciplinary measures on Fr. Vlasic.

The non-groundless news that reached this Congregation reveals that the religious priest in question did not respond, even partially, to the demands of ecclesiastical obedience required by the very delicate situation he finds himself in, justifying himself by citing his zealous activity in the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno and surrounding territories, in initiating religious activities, buildings, etc.

Since Fr. Vlasic has fallen into a censure of interdict latae sententiae reserved to this Dicastery, I kindly ask Your Excellency, for the good of the faithful, to inform the community of the canonical status of Fr. Vlasic and at the same time to report on the situation in question…”.

*****
This regards the fact that the same Congregation of the Holy See applied ecclesiastical sanctions against Rev. Father Tomislav VlaÅ¡ić, through a Decree of the Congregation (prot. 144/1985) of 25 January 2008, signed by Cardinal William Levada, Prefect, and by Archbishop Angelo Amato, Secretary of the Congregation along with the “Concordat cum originali” of 30 January 2008, verified by Msgr. John Kennedy, Official of the Congregation.

The Decree was handed over to Rev. Fr. Tomislav Vlašić in the General Curia of the OFM in Rome on 16 February 2008 and the notification was co-signed by the Minister General of the Franciscan Minor Order, Father José R. Carballo, the Ordinary of Fr. Vlašić.

The Decree of the Congregation mentions that Rev. Fr. Tomislav VlaÅ¡ić, a cleric of the Franciscan Minor Order – the founder of the association ‘Kraljice mira potpuno Tvoji – po Mariji k Isusu’ and who is involved in the “phenomenon Medjugorje” – has been reported to the Congregation “for the diffusion of dubious doctrine, manipulation of consciences, suspected mysticism, disobedience towards legitimately issued orders and charges contra sextum.

Having studied the case, the Congregation during its special Congress decreed the following sanctions against Rev. Fr. Tomislav Vlasic:

“1. Mandatory residence in one of the houses of the Order in the region of Lombardy (Italy) to be determined by the Minister General of the Order and to be realized within thirty days from the time of the legitimate notification of this decree;

2. All contacts with the “Kraljice Mira…” community and with its members are prohibited;

3. Any actions involving juridical contracts and administrative organizations, whether canonical or civil, effected without the written permission ad actum of the Minister General of the Order and under his responsibility are prohibited;

4. A mandatory course of theological-spiritual formation, with a final evaluation along with a prior recognitio of this Congregation, and a solemn professio fidei;

5. The following are also prohibited: activities involving the ‘care of souls’, preaching, public appearances, while the faculty to hear confessions is also revoked up until the conclusion of the terms described in the previous number, barring an evaluation of the case.

An additional sanction of a latae sententiae interdict (can. 1332) reserved to the Apostolic See is adjoined in the case of the violation of the mandatory residence (n. 1) and the other prohibited acts mentioned in n. 3 and n. 5.

Fr. Vlasic is forewarned that in the case of stubbornness a juridical penal process will begin with the aim of still harsher sanctions, not excluding dismissal, having in mind the suspicion of heresy and schism, as well as scandalous acts contra sextum, aggravated by mystical motivations.

Fr. Vlasic remains under the direct jurisdiction of the Minister General of the Order of Minor Franciscans, who shall see to his vigilance through the local Superior or another Delegate”.
*****

All the priests, religious and faithful in the Dioceses of Mostar-Duvno and Trebnje-Mrkan, as well as all those concerned “in the pertinent territories”, are hereby informed on the current canonical status of Rev. Father Tomislav VlaÅ¡ić.

With the sentiments of my highest consideration,

+ Ratko Perić, Bishop
Fr. Ante Luburić, Chancellor

    Sarah Palin: Feminist Hat-Trick?

She came out of nowwhere - a new kind of feminist. Will she score? First - a mayor, then she won the governor's spot. Will she now make VP?

Typically, a feminist is envisioned as someone who is liberal on social issues, and especially defensive of abortion.

There is another kind of feminist emerging - one who is smart enough to know that what grows in a woman's womb is not a blob of tissue, but a human being - one with it's own distinct DNA who should have rights, especially the right to be born. Like the first group of feminists, she often works full or part time, but includes others who are domestic engineers, managing their homes and raising children. Also like the first group, she can be single, or married.

I believe that the first set of feminists is largely graying. Many young people aren't buying the snake oil they've been selling. Others are turned off by their pushiness. It's not that these radical feminists are outspoken, but what they are outspoken about. They are a vocal minority which attempts to represent a silent majority that does not share the same views. In fact, these feminists protect free speech, while treating other women who don't agree with their views like they are not sophisticated enough to even have a view or a voice (EDIT: Need proof? Read this ). The media aids them in "domination" over all other females - especially secular news sources - while the majority isn't even heard.

Sarah Palin is energizing that majority and giving hope to ordinary women who never thought they would see the day that one of their own has a real possibility to make it first to the White House.

Who is Sarah Palin? Someone whom I believe the radical feminists, and the secular media that promotes them, will grossly underestimate. Why? Because the silent majority, along with others, will be motivated to vote. And, the more she is attacked, the more it will invigorate supporters. It's not Sarah Palin they are afraid of, but all that she represents.

Watch this short clip. There are pictures of her newest baby, the one with Down's Syndrome that she chose to treasure as a precious gift from God. She's a pro-life feminist.

I'm sure organizations like Peta are besides themselves (she hunts and fishes.....don't worry, there's nothing gross in the clip). While the only thing I can personally aim at an animal is my camera, I have no problems with legitimate hunting, provided the meat is eaten by someone and not wasted.
