Call to Holiness: Treasures of the Mass - October 10, 2009 - Royal Oak, MI

Call to Holiness will hold a conference on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 8:30am to 4:15pm (with registration starting at 7:00am).

It will be held at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan which has a large seating capacity in two tiers.

There are some really great speakers lined up!

First, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC of Karaganda, Kazakhstan will speak on The Sacredness of the Holy Eucharist and the Fathers of the Church.

You may recall that His Excellency is the author of the excellent new book, Dominus Est, on reception of Holy Communion. It was published by the Vatican's own library last year. Bishop Schneider has a PhD in Patristics and his book looks closely at the reception of Communion in the Catholic Church. It was excerpted in the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano about a year ago: Historical-Liturgical Notes on the Rite of the Eucharist. He also brings a unique perspective, having made his First Holy Communion in secrecy within the former Soviet Union. Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, aka, "Fr. Z" of the well-trafficked blog, What Does the Prayer Really Say?, and column of the same name in The Wanderer, will be at the conference.

The title of his talk is: Mystery Both Fearsome and Alluring: Holy Mass and True Active Participation.

Assumption Grotto's pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone, will speak on Treasures of the Mass Explored. Father is a gifted speaker. He is diocesan priest, but also a secular Carmelite. When he speaks on any spiritual topic he goes into depths and into angles often not explored in these times. All that he offers is timeless and most applies to either form of the Mass, ordinary and extraordinary.


While there may be yet another speaker, the fourth and last one listed, is Dr. Michael P. Foley who will talk on How the Mass Shaped the Western World. Click for more about Dr. Foley.

Breaking! Cardinal Maida Retires; Bishop Allen Vigneron to take the helm in Detroit

It's Bishop Allen Vigneron!

I have to get off to work, but wanted to pass along that Cardinal Maida has officially announced his retirement and Bishop Allen Vigneron, currently of the Oakland, CA diocese will talk the helm in Detroit. He will be installed on January 28th.

Folks, this is very good. Bishop Vigneron is a native of metro Detroit, knows the diocese very well (and I do mean, very well), and was an auxiliary bishop here before being assigned in California.

This almost assures him a red hat.

Cardinal Maida is rumored to be staying in the metro Detroit area, along with Cardinal Szoka who also resides in the area.

Photopost: Fire that Shutdown Gratiot Ave this Afternoon

Many of us were detained getting to Assumption Grotto which is on Gratiot just south of 7 Mile Road. On the east side of Gratiot and just a few buildings south of the I-696 service drive, B&D Upholstery building was engulfed in flames (according to an article in the Detroit Free Press online, it was unoccupied). People had seen it on fire at 11:00 and I passed by just after Noon when I got caught these pics. Gratiot was shutdown for several hours - on the southbound side with fire trucks and on the northbound side due to heavy smoke.

Detroit's Holy Trinity Parish Robbed - Tabernacle with Blessed Sacrament Stolen

This is very sad to report. A historic parish in Detroit, ransacked by thieves and sacred items were stolen. It's not so much the gold Tabernacle, but the fact that the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity was in that Tabernacle. An ordination Chalice was stolen, as well as some other items.

Please make an act of reparation for the offenses made against the Blessed Sacrament. Pray for the conversion of those who have doen this. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do.
