Interesting Catholic reads for the weekend of March 11

Must Read | Pope Benedict XVI, in his ad limina address to U.S. Bishops of Region VII-IX discusses marriage, the family, and the Church's teaching on sexuality in the public square.   You will not be disappointed with what the Holy Father has said to the bishops, especially on the failure of catechesis in these areas.  He even talks about cohabitation - a subject I have often expressed how perplexed I was that it simply isn't mentioned from the pulpit.  God bless the Holy Father for speaking without ambiguity.  Here is just one snippet:

In our conversations, some of you have pointed with concern to the growing difficulties encountered in communicating the Church’s teaching on marriage and the family in its integrity, and to a decrease in the number of young people who approach the sacrament of matrimony. Certainly we must acknowledge deficiencies in the catechesis of recent decades, which failed at times to communicate the rich heritage of Catholic teaching on marriage as a natural institution elevated by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament, the vocation of Christian spouses in society and in the Church, and the practice of marital chastity. This teaching, stated with increasing clarity by the post-conciliar magisterium and comprehensively presented in both the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, needs to be restored to its proper place in preaching and catechetical instruction.

Hey! Even Catholic News Service (CNS)  put it front-and-center, and gave it an appropriate headline: Church must better explain teaching on sexuality, pope tells US bishops.    Catholic News Service is the reporting arm of the USCCB, but over the years the emphasis has been on social justice, often at the expense of presenting, front-and-center, serious moral issues.  Social justice is not a bad word, and it is important.  However, while there are no grey areas in certain aspects of morality in Catholic teaching, when it comes to social justice there are many ways that good Catholics can disagree on the best approach.  I think CNS will evolve in time as the bishops become more vocal on these moral issues, as well.

Trust me, people, the Angel of Darkness, who has enjoyed the silence from pulpits the most, is going to get a run for his money with this generation of bishops and priests.  Let's keep them in our prayers because many of these men will endure a white martyrdom or a red martyrdom to turn things around.  Like many, I am disappointed about the past, and I am not ignorant of how we got here.  However, I am very hopeful with what I see many bishops and priests doing today.  For that reason, I refuse to dwell in the past, and look forward to the future with genuine Christian hope out of respect for the words of Our Lord who told us the Gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church.  Hold these clerics up with your prayers and sacrifice.

At the very bottom of this post is a video that carries an audio homily. You will hear a priest who has been passionately awakened  - a member of the great sleeping giant that is the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Burke speaking in metro-Detroit this Saturday

It's not too late!  Tomorrow, Saturday, March 10, Holy Trinity Apostolate is having it's annual Lenten Symposium and Cardinal Burke will be speaking on The Christian Vocation: The Call to Martyrdom.  I understand you can still get in at the doors.  Go to HTA's website for more info.  Registration is from 7-8 am and Mass follows to kick it off.

Ripped from the Catholic Headlines - Tuesday Edition

Today is the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. One thing I noticed in looking over artwork for this apostle, is that he is often depicted with a winged-bull.  I didn't have time to look it up, so I would ask my readers to chime in.  What is the story behind this?

Here are a few topics floating around....

The Holy Father explains the need for a "Year for Faith"
+ + +

Msgr. Charles Pope is blogging: On The “Noninfallibilists” and How They Diminish Virtues of Docility and Obedience.  The blogging monsignor also has a post up, of interest: On Being Rich in What Matters to God – A Reflection on Our Often Wrongful Priorities.

+ + +

Thugs who were part of "occupy Rome" decided to take it out on a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Taylor Marshall shows a picture and offers a useful suggestion: Five First Saturdays.  Father Z talks about the many protests in Rome, as well.  Reporter Charles Gasparino decided to take a stroll through "occupiers" in New York.  Is it Marxist?  You decide.  See his story and a video at the bottom.

+ + +

In Oklahoma, a cancer patient trades her life so her baby could survive

+ + +

Yesterday was the feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch.  Fr. Ryan Erlenbush discusses the authority of bishops in the writings of St. Ignatius.  There is an interesting dialogue taking place in the combox.

+ + +

At the National Catholic Register, Joan Frawley Desmond is talking about:  HHS Ends Contract With Church Program for Trafficking Victims, Stressing Need for Contraception

+ + +

Dr. Gerard Nadal continues his Novena for Jon Scharfenberger and others injured in a head-on collision that claimed the lives Kortney Blythe Gordon and her unborn baby, Sophy, as well as the other driver.  Kortney was the National Field Director for Students for Life.  They were returning from a pro-life conference in Georgia just over a week ago when the accident happened.   For more on Jon who is fighting for his life, read this initial post on him by Gerry.  Please keep all concerned in your prayers.

+ + +

Below is a snapshot of another petulant "tweet" and facebook entry offered by Fr. Pavone (the latter of which has 42 comments revealing that it was taken as a veiled snipe at his own bishop).  It was made on the feast of St. Teresa of Avila.

Fr. Pavone was a "no show" at a meeting set up by Bishop Zurek for October 13th.  It was learned the next day that it was on the advice of his canon lawyer that he not go the meeting without mediation.  Blogging canonist Ed Peters explores the use of mediation in such cases.  The question is, what kind of mediation is he looking for?  It seems that the very pro-life Bishop Gracida agrees with Dr. Peters .... at least the exclamation points he put up when copying the text over to his blog usually signals agreement and he gave Ed's post four of them.  In the title of his post, Bishop Gracida asks, "What is there to mediate?"

Catholic News Roundup | Thursday, September 22

Pope Benedict XVI arrived in his native Germany today. He tells the people he has not come to discuss politics or economics, but to talk to them about God.    If you want to follow the Holy Father throughout his day, and look back at his homilies, addresses, and even live or archived video feeds, you can do so at the webpage set up by the Vatican for his Germany 2011 visit.

The Diocese of Phoenix, Arizona is going to limit Communion under both kinds and specify under which conditions it may be distributed.  See the news report at Catholic Culture: Diocese limits Communion under both kinds, laments excessive extraordinary ministers.  At the bottom of that news report are links to the Diocese of Phoenix, one of which is a Q & A I recommend reading.

USCCB President, Archbishop Timothy Dolan, urges President Obama to end his campaign against marriage and religious freedom.

Medjugorje researcher, Louis Belanger, has a combox discussion in his blog with Andrea Tornielli after first dissecting an article written by the Italian journalist, in which he seems to be advancing the myth that the Bishops of Mostar were somehow in kahoots with the communists.

At the National Catholic Register blogs, Jennifer Fulwiler explains, Why Virgiinity Matters.

Father Z fields a question: Why bother going to Mass when in the state of mortal sin?  Then, he unloads with hellfire and brimstone.

Msgr. Charles Pope reflects on the sin of gossip, with a little help from St. Thomas Aquinas.

Dr. Gerard Nadal explains, in a very simple way, the relationship a priest and his bishop are suppose to have in a must-read post, Fr. Pavone and Authentic Freedom.   If you missed it yesterday, you might want to read Phil Lawler's commetnary: Fr. Pavone's last stand?

Patrick Archbold at Creative Minority Report says that Alberto Cutie (aka, "Father Oprah"), is a jerk (with good reason).

The Michigan Catholic Conference applauds the passage of the partial-birth abortion ban: Senate Bill 160 passed the Senate 29-8 and House Bill 4109 passed the House 75-33.

Quote of the Day
I quoted this recently, and in the past.  There is a lot packed in here.  It is from Fr. Hardon's thoughts on "childlikeness"

[Docility] means therefore to be willing to learn from God and here’s the hard one: the willingness to learn from God not of course as though God will, though of course He might, send us His own divine angelic messenger, normally not. Normally God teaches us through the circumstances of our daily lives. Especially those most painful circumstances called other people. That’s where we tend to be less than docile. Openness then to God’s teaching us especially through all whom He places into our lives. It is great, great wisdom to be so disposed as to be ready to learn from and I mean it, everyone from the youngest child to the oldest speaking to religious golden or diamond jubilarian . - Fr. John A. Hardon

Assumption 2011 Photos are coming...

Assumption Grotto's men of the altar, singing the Lourdes Hymn as people continue to process back to the Grotto area

I'm in edit mode, folks.  Bear with me.  I have a lot of work ahead of me and it has already been started.   Soon, you will get to see pictures from Assumption Day 2011 at Assumption Grotto.  It was a most blessed day.

In the meanwhile, here are some interesting reads around the Catholic digital continent:
  • The Pope Benedict XVI says that the Feast of Mary's Assumption gives us hope for the future (via CNA).

    .

      .

    .
    • Kevin Symonds has been hard at work for some years on a controversial figure, Ann the Lay Apostle. There are some interesting developments in recent weeks on her case, with two key backers - Fr. Kevin Scallon and Sr. Briege McKenna - publicly distancing themselves.  See the lastest article by Kevin at Catholic Lane:  Deception for Our Times? Questioning Ann a Lay Apostle.

Interesting Catholic Reads for January 17, 2010

From the Te Deum Laudamus Photo Archive:
The baldacchino (canopy) of the Altar at Assumption Grotto

I regret that I have not had time to blog as much as I would like of late.  I have some items of a more spiritual nature I would like to blog on and will try to bring them to you soon.  There are so many websites and blogs which cover current events in Catholicism and I would like to try to shift more into indepth writings which will offer an alternative to some of the repetitive things found in other places.

Please do take note of what is in my Twitter Feed by clicking the link at the bottom of these posts, or by viewing the feed in my sidebar.  Check it especially when I am not blogging.  If there is anything "breaking" you will find it there.  I update it several times daily on some days.  It is a mix of news and blogposts.

I hopet to find time to update my blog design to reflect the changing of seasons, but if the Christmas theme remains up until February 2nd, it won't bust my bubble.

    Interesting Catholic Reads

New Ordinariate in England and Wales

Married Permanent Deacons - can they or can't they....?
There is a bit of a dust-up out there surrounding what is in canon law regarding permanent deacons and continued marital relations after ordination.  Can they, or can't they? Tom Peters has a good summary of the debate out there with a load of links.

    National Catholic Register changing ownership
Patrick Madrid blogs on the change in ownership coming to the National Catholic Register (not to be confused with the National Catholic Reporter - often referred to as "fishwrap" because of it's dissidency). The Register was picked up by the Legionaries of Christ which are undergoing changes in the wake of the scandal brought on by the disgraced founder, Maciel.

    Fatima and Third Secret Controversy
Fr. Andrew Apostolis blogs about The Controversy Over the Third Secret of Fatima: 4 Objections and Responses....  Father has written a book: Fatima For Today: The Urgent Marian Message of Hope . If you find that interesting, I would encourage you to read Some Friendly Reflections for the Clarification of a Debate by "Fatimologist" Antonio Borelli.  It addresses some claims made in the book, "The Fourth Secret of Fatima" by Antonio Socci.

Skimming the Catholic Headlines on December 3, 2010

     About Twitter for those unfamiliar

The above story is my top link below. Before we get to some good reads today, I want to explain Twitter and how I use it.  Twitter is a microblogger.  It use to be that many of us would make news lists like the one I had below in our blogs. But, this is time consuming.  When Twitter came out, we began to use it to pass along daily Catholic news items. Bloggers, including myself have embedded the feed to make it easy on readers to scroll and click the links to the news or blog sources.

Each morning, and often on my lunch hour, and in the evening, I will go to Twitter and see what news items others are tweeting.  So, when you come to my blog, don't just look at what I am posting, go to the Twitter feed in my sidebar and scroll to see what's hot.  It's impossible to blog on everything.

Something else that is interesting is what happens on Fridays.  We have a "follow friday" or "ff" in which we drop a bunch of other Twitter names we want to recommend.  There are Catholic journalists, news organizations, Archdioceses, priests, religious, and many laypeople using Twitter.  You can see whom I have recommended today in two #ff tweets in this snapshot (it's just a picture, so go to the feed in my sidebar and scroll to find if necessary, then click on their names).

This is just a snapshot :D
If you hit the actual twitter name at the bottom or "Join the conversation" it will take you right to my profile and feed on Twitter.
You don't need a Twitter account to read feeds.  However, if you do open up a free account, you can follow others with one click. You not only get their tweets, but what they are retweeting from others.

Here is a sampling of interesting topics I have tweeted or retweeted last night and this morning...

On that last one, Jimmy Akin observes the impeccable timing in which the Holy Father is offering catechesis on authentic mystics and signs of their authenticity, as we await word on Medjugorje.

    FIRST FRIDAY AT GROTTO

Today is First Friday and Adoration at Grotto moves from the small chapel to the main parish Church.  The "light" hours when people are needed are mid-morning and from 3-5.

Good reads in the Catholic blogosphere for Sunday, August 30, 2009

    STORIES OF LIFE
I just read an excellent article by The Anchoress:
Two terrific “must read” stories, one at the start of a life, and the other at life’s culmination, bring to mind verse 2 of Psalm 131:
Truly I have set my soul
    in silence and peace.
A weaned child on its mother’s breast,
    even so is my soul.

Go read those two "must read" stories in her blogpost: As a child rests in his mother's arms

ANDREA TORNIELLI REAFFIRMS "REFORM OF THE REFORM" STORY
In other news, hotly circulating, is one in which Vaticanista, Andrea Tornielli reaffirms what he penned, after the Holy See has put out a denial. The Vatican watcher carefully points out that the denial is a non-denial because it denies things he did not write in his original article. If you are dizzy, you are not alone. Since the Holy See got caught with it's cassock unbuttoned in the Bp Williamson affair, among others, it has been closely monitoring the blogosphere. Hmmmmm........Perhaps that is what some of those hits are from Vatican City and Lazio, Rome. This is a positive development, as is the careful clarification by Andrea Tornielli about what he did and did not say.

There are a few blogposts to read on this topic:

CHANGING OF THE GUARD IN SCRANTON, PA
Those of you who have followed this blog have seen the many posts I have made on Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, PA. He has been hailed as a pro-life, pro-family champion, and the bane of those who think Church teaching is something that changes with popular opinion. Who can forget him standing up last November at the annual bishop's conference and telling his brothers that they would be held accountable for their collective reticence (referring to how matters concerning Catholic politicians were being handled).

Rumor was circulating locally for some weeks that His Excellency was stepping down, most likely due to health reasons. He was in Rome in June for a meeting with officials at the Congregation for Bishops. What is interesting to note is that his auxiliary bishop, John Dougherty, 77, is retiring at the same time. There is a presser in some undisclosed location, closed to the public, in Scranton, being held by the diocese at 10:00am Monday. Stay tuned.

Today is Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. Assumption Grotto's 7:00pm Mass will feature the choir, which normally rehearses on Wednesday night. As is typical in penitential seasons though, any and all music will be greatly subdued, with less organ.

Interesting headlines and....Assumption Day photo update

I haven't been posting much because I haven't been home. It's been a very busy time since the Assumption, with two birthdays, and two doctor appointments this week as followup to my mother's recent hospitalization (she is doing very well). I still have not even touched the vast majority of photos from throughout that beautiful day. Stay tuned, those are coming and there is some devotional and liturgical eye-candy among them.

    In the News
In my quick scans early this morning and at lunch time, there are some very interesting titles to pass along to you. Of all places, a secular news source, The Detroit News featured an article on Catholics and Natural Family Planning. It was fine in the early going until for some odd reason, the author felt the need to ask dissident Catholics from "Elephants in the Living Room" for an opinion. It's like asking a vegetarian to what "doneness" he likes his prime rib. Moving right along..... The article does quote Dr. Janet Smith of Sacred Heart Major Seminary, who has a Conference on Humanae Vitae coming up on September 20th.

Next up, is a great article Fr. Z has on his blog (with his own commentary). It's about Archbishop Raymond L. Burke and anti-life politicians and those Catholics who support abortion. There is something in that article for every Catholic worth pondering. Go read: Archbp. Burke on a global problem: marginalizing faith in the “private” sphere (WDTPRS).

Along similar lines: Archbishop Chaput speaks on Catholics' political duties.

And, the USCCB is asking Catholics to pray an Election Day Novena.

In other news, there are interesting developments on people to be beatified soon: The parents of St. Therese and the Confessor of St. Faustina.

On a final note, I have been following some very sad developments in the Diocese of Leeds (UK). Here are some headlines from Damian Thompson of the UK Telegraph.

    In the news....

I need to turn my attention to my home which looks like a hurrican blew right through. I was out of town on business yesterday and came straight back to Assumption Grotto for adoration and Mass knowing I was too tired to do anything else when I returned. The meeting was in the Grand Rapids area. I was feeling a bit grimey as my coffee slipped out of my hands and into my lap as I was driving. Needless to say, my car seat looks like I had an accident! Why didn't I buy seat covers?!?!?

There is a very important event coming up at Assumption Grotto and I have more details forthcoming, but because readership is much lower on the weekends, I am waiting to post on Sunday and will likely step back from posting as much as possible to give it the greatest visibility to those visiting my site (and to catch up on some other things).

Friday, June 27th at Grotto - Save the Date!!!
There has not been much publicity at Grotto yet, but it has been mentioned on Ave Maria Radio and in some other places. This weekend, I'm sure it will be announced, and perhaps

Next Friday, June 27th, at 10:00am, Bishop Flores will celebrate Mass for aborted babies found in a local dumpster. He will be joined in our cemetery by Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life who will eulogize these infants. And, they will be buried in our cemetery behind the Church. Please set the date aside and come back to read a more detailed post Monday morning.

I am starting my weeklong vacation a day early on account of this. I know another person who is doing the same. By whatever means possible, please try to come if you are able, and give these infants the love they deserve during their Mass and burial.

    Recent News...

This first article highlights why God chose to give Peter - that is, Peter here on earth, the keys to the kingdom - to bind and lose. The Anglican situation reveals what happens when each person (in this case various church leaders), choose to let their own [malformed] conscience guide them. Please pray for the conservative Anglicans - may they find that all they desire in unity can be found in the Catholic faith, where the Magisterium is unwavering in it's teachings. Man has tried to loosen those teachings through relativism, but the Holy Spirit has kept His promise enabling the Church to prevail against those kinds of assaults seen now amongs Anglicans and other denominations. There can't be two or more truths and some would like us to believe we can have it all ways.

On the political front is an interesting collection on Obama and Infanticide at the Catholic League. It doesn't get any worse than this.

Also noteworthy at the blog of the American Papist for those in metro Detroit:

    Te Deum Laudamus! Home

Only the free can choose obedience to Magisterial teachings. The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; rather, it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!.

May 31, 2008: Headlines of Interest....

I have been running very short on time of late. In fact, yesterday I had a choice to blog on the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of the Priesthood on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, or go to Mass. I had to go to a funeral home after work for a co-workers mother who passed away over Memorial Day weekend, making the 7:00pm at Grotto a stretch. I knew if I didn't make the early-bird Mass at a parish near work at 6:15am, I wouldn't get to go at all.

Sometimes that is how blogging goes. It is also why I don't want you to depend on me for regular news. To be honest, there are several quick stops I make each morning before I do anything else. They include and are not limited to:

Posting everything they post is redundant. If they already have a post on something I wanted to post on, I try to draw your attention to it.

If you don't want to follow other blogs and news sources on a regular basis, at least visit them when you see I am not posting. I keep saying that I want to get out of the "news" end of blogging and focus more on fewer, more original, and well thought out postings. After you visit some Catholic blogs you begin to see they all cover some of the same things.

With that, I want to draw your attention to a few news items and blogposts out there that I have wanted to post on, but haven't had the time (the clutter in my house is closing in on me!!!).

If you don't follow Fr. Z on a daily basis at WDTPRS, here is some of what you've been missing...

News and Blogpost Roundup for May 8, 2008

I'm still quite short on time. In the meanwhile, here are some posts and news of interest today:

    Blog Spotlights:

This blog is about stuff Catholics like. Some of the stuff, like felt banners, Catholics shouldn’t like but do for reasons they will have to explain to God.

The purpose of this blog is to take a light-hearted look at Catholic things in a way that can be educational to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. If you tend to be easily “hurt” or “offended”, this is a good place to get over it.

If you have something that you think is good enough to be posted here,
fill out our form. If we like it, we’ll publish it and give you credit.

March 14, 2008: Te Deum Blogpost Roundup

A scene from Holy Thursday 2006. Don't miss the spectacular Holy Week events starting this coming Thursday. Good Friday is always a packed house at Assumption Grotto, and the Easter Vigil is absolutely stunning!

    CANON LAW UPDATE
I've been quite busy with work and time has been tight for other reasons, limiting some of my blogging capabilities. I would, however, like to pass on a few items:

Canonist, Ed Peters, gives us an interesting look into details of Archbishop Burke's treatment of the "womenpriests". Ed explains that Abp Burke's application of Canon Law is....well, one for the books.

Go read: Abp Burke's excommunication of "women priests"

    POPE BENEDICT'S VISIT
If you are interested in the upcoming Papal visit, I highly recommend you frquently visit the blog of Tom Peters - the American Papist. It looks like Tom won't be just an ordinary arm-chair Papist at this event.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CYBER-PRIEST
Life in the internet domain name era can get interesting as Fr. Z recently learned. A snafu transformed his site into something that had him praying all the way back home where he finally tracked down the problem. If you want a chuckle this morning, go read his post: WDTPRS: blog or … dating service?

Before Fr. Z's site went down, he provided excellent coverage of the Pope's Penance service, in which he heard private confessions and provided a talk, for which Fr. Z provided a quick translation (scroll down).

    CARDINAL MEDINA ESTEVEZ INTERVIEW
The New Liturgical Movement has a great interview of the former Prefect of the CDW Cardinal Medina Estevez by Petrus. You would recognize him if you recall the face of the Cardinal who introduced to the new Pope Benedict XVI saying, Habemus Papam!

UPDATE: O.L. OF GUADALUPE SHRINE IN LACROSSE
NLM has been showing some awesome details in photos coming out of LaCrosse, Wisconsin of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine.

In this photo post of Archbishop Burke at Assumption Grotto, I discussed how he was soliciting funds for this most worthy project.

    CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS
Want to help some cloistered Dominicans? Buy soap! It comes from the Dominican Nuns of Summit, NJ. You may be interested in a good article on the Moniales OP blog: Good habits leave yong nuns wiser.

    MYSTICAL COFFEE
Want to help some monastic Carmelites? Buy Mystic Monk Coffee!

You may want to take a close look at the website for the newer, but quite traditional, Carmelite Monks of Wyoming. Click through their website to see how vocations are changing. This is one rugged bunch of monks where ora et labora are not just lipservice. Monastic Life: It's not for wimps. Only a true calling this form of life, and the graces that come with that calling, enable a young man to persevere for the rest of his life.
