Vatican Approves New English Translation for the Order of the Mass

From the USCCB website:

WASHINGTON— The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has receivedapproval (recognitio) from the Holy See’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments for the new English-language translation of the Order of Mass (Ordo Missae).

This is the first section of the translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal. It includes most of the texts used in every celebration of the Mass, including the responses that will be said by the people.

In its letter, the Congregation pointed out that while the texts are binding, the approval “does not intend that these texts are to be put into use immediately.”

Cardinal Francis Arinze, Prefect of the Congregation, explained the reasons for providing the text at this time. The purpose is to provide “time for the pastoral preparation of priests, deacons and for appropriate catechesis of the lay faithful. It will likewise facilitate the devising of musical settings for parts of the Mass.”

The text is covered by copyright law and the Statutes of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy.

The more significant changes of the people’s parts are:

• et cum spiritu tuo is rendered as “And with your spirit”
  
  
• In the Confiteor, the text “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault” has been added
  
  
• The Gloria has been translated differently and the structure is different from the present text
  
  
• In the Preface dialogue the translation of “Dignum et justum est” is “It is right and just”
  
  
• The first line of the Sanctus now reads “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts”
  
  
• The response of the people at the Ecce Agnus Dei is “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

At this time, no date is available as to when the entire translation of the Roman Missal will be released

Some really good news on the ICEL translation front. There is a draft floating around out there, with some excellent changes. Fr. Z writes on several of them in these posts.


NICENE CREED - CONSUBSTANTIAL

"Consubstantial" is now in the latest draft, and rightly so.

You may recall a rather interesting and enlightening debate between bishops on the matter. I provided a link to this dialogue, found on the Adoremus website, last year. On one side were several members of the USCCB asking that the literal translation for "consubstantialem" be used. On the other side, were Bishops Donald Trautman and Sklystad, pushing through the "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" version - one we are more familiar with from memory, "...one in being with the Father"

To my mind, the word consubstantial is far better as it provides an opportunity to discuss this from the pulpit to catechize people on the meaning. While the words "one in being", each in isolation, may be easy to understand, it is a concept which must be grasped.

I have been very busy with work and family so I have not had a chance to continue reading Sacramentum Caritatis. However, skimming a few internet posts, consider reading those below.

Anything linking to Fr. Z's website may or may not be working when you go to click on it. If you get an error, or a single page talking about high traffic, just try his site a little later - in off peak hours. The only problem is that you need to consider there is no single clock on the internet. Peak hours here in the US are in the evenings from 7-9 for my site. But, Fr. Z is in Rome, and there are people viewing from Down Under, and many other continents. Just keep trying back. And, if you frequent his site, consider hitting that donation button and give him something to upgrade. While this site is free, the level of content he had was not. The more hits he gets, the more bandwidth he needs and the more it costs. I sent my donation in because I pretty much read his articles daily. It's one of the first stops I make in the blogosphere.
