Grotto Musical: The Heritance - This Wednesdsay, Friday and Next Sunday

Young people and some adults roll mini-posters for The Heritance - an original musical stage play with some 60 parishioners involved, mostly young people. These folks have been enduring 4-5 hour rehearsals, 2-3 times weekly for a few months now. Many more hours went into carpentry, sound system setup, lighting and more. Let's pack the gym!!!

Just a reminder that the Grotto musical production, The Heritance, runs this Wednesday, Friday (7:00pm), and this coming Sunday (3:00pm). Tickets were suppose to be in the gift shop after the 9:30 am Mass, but they were still at the rectory. You should be able to get your tickets at the door (click on the poster below for details).

See my previous post for an article that appeared in the local Detroit Free Press recently which included an interview with Grotto's pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone, who wrote the music for the symphony which will be in the mock "pit" for all three performances this time.

Sorry I can't show any photos from the stage rehearsals, but I can show you some of what was going on in the pre-rehearsal hours (makeup and microphones take hours to put on the many performers so they are there hours ahead of time).

When you are just a baby and your mom and dad are in the show, there is no shortage of people to watch you at Assumption Grotto - a place with lots of families and kids.

Fr. Perrone makes a last minute adjustment to the music.

Posters! Posters! And, more Posters! Some of our youngest performers worked very hard on stage and off. And, you should hear them sing in their solos!!!!

Fr. Perrone gets a little mental conducting practice down as the piano plays for the practice sessions.

Young people are involved in many facets of the production. The laptop shown will run words being sung above the stage so the audience can see the lyrics.

And, the folks had all kinds of ways to help pass the time in between action.

The Heritance......be there!!!

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

A priest blogs Michael D. O'Brien's "Fr. Elijah - An Apocalpyse" & Modernism

With Advent coming, I was already thinking about pulling back a little on the blogging so that I could spend some time to read some of the great Catholic classics and other spiritual works. But, God wanted to make sure it didn't remain just a thought....

At the 9:30 TLM today, Fr. John started his homily off by talking about the classic spiritual works that we don't seem to have time to read anymore. Father reflected for a moment about where the time might be going. As he pointed out, the day still has 24 hours and we still need a certain number of hours to sleep. Yet, we still have less time these days. Why?

Fr. John pointed to our obsession with electronics. We are engrossed with email, blackberries, iPods, Television, Computers, Internet, texting.....and, the list goes on. He enouraged us to pull back during Advent and I'm going to encourage you to do the same by not posting as frequently. Rather than post daily, I may do so a few times weekly.

I also found a post I want to pass along at the blog of Fr. Dwight Longenecker - a book review and a simple, yet indepth explanation of Modernism. I'll give you just a snippet and you can follow the link to his blog to read the rest. He is speaking of the book, "Fr. Elijah" by Michael D. O'Brien - part of a series that I see in our own Grotto giftshop.

"....What the book does best is reveal the major heresy of our time. Modernism is the blend of many other 'isms', among them scientism, rationalism, sentimentalism, idealism and utilitarianism.

Scientism believes science has all the answers, rationalism thinks the answers are all logical, sentimentalism is the dependance on emotional urgings for decision making, idealism trusts in a great ideal and utilitarianism trusts in what is efficient or what gets the job done. Relativism is the grand-daddy of them all, and says that there is no such thing as absolute truth.

In other words, modernism is the conviction that the supernatural is nothing more than silly wishful thinking of medieval-minded, superstitious old women (of every age and both genders) and that real religion is about changing the world instead of the salvation of souls.

This basic error is at the heart of a very fundamental dichotomy in our culture and our church. It doesn't take too much analysis to see how modernism soon leads to tyranny. The modernist idealist (who doesn't believe in the next world) has only one lifetime to try to make this world a better place, and to do so, he will use any means necessary. Thus all the great tyrannies have marched through the last century, shedding more blood than the world has ever seen. Each one believed in making the world a better place, and believed in killing all who held back their utopian dream.

What is most disturbing is to see how this heresy has invaded the Catholic Church. So we have bishops and priests and people who invest all their time and energy in trying to make this world a better place rather than saving souls for the next...."

Is this what Christmas is about? Man trampled to death!

This is absolutely horrifying. It was only a few years ago, before I got serious about my faith that I use to go out the day after Thanksgiving to the malls and "fight" the crowds. I regret how much I use to spend on gifts every year when I should have been giving more of that money to worthy charities.

How many people buying so-called "Christmas gifts" participated in this kind of madness all across the US?

Christmas is not about going nuts for bargains!

A 34-year-old man died and a 28-year-old woman suffered an apparent miscarriage when they were trampled in a rush of Black Friday shoppers at a Long Island mall today, police said.

Long lines of shoppers thronged outside the Wal-Mart at the Green Acres mall in Valley Stream before it opened for post-Thanksgiving business at 5 a.m.

"When the doors opened, all hell broke loose," a law enforcement source told The Post.

[snip]

An unidentified man, believed to be a store employee who tried to restrain the oncoming juggernaut, was knocked to the ground at 5:03 a.m.

He was rushed to a local hospital but declared dead at 6:03, police said.

Four other people were hospitalized, including the pregnant woman. She was knocked to the store floor a short distance from where the 34-year-old man was trampled.

The other three people taken to hospitals suffered minor injuries.

Source: New York Post, 11:16am update (Note: this is a fresh news story which may be updated several times within the provided link. What is provided above is a snapshot in time).

God help us when people have to die for the sake of a bargain.

UPDATE at 4:07pm: Fox News is reporting that woman trampled, who is 8 months pregnant has not miscarried. If someone gets a later update, feel free to drop a note in the combox.

Coming Next Week: The Heritance - An Assumption Grotto Theatrical Production (includes Detroit Free Press interview with Fr. Perrone)

I have been wanting to tell you about the latest original, theatrical production at Assumption Grotto which will take place on the following days:

Wednesday, December 3, 2008 (7:00 pm)
Friday, December 5, 2008 (7:00 pm)
Sunday, December 7, 2008 (3:00 pm)

For tickets and more information: 313 372-0762

Parking can be an issue at Assumption Grotto. There is a secure lot, but I would encourage you to get there early. Last year, the final performance had so many people, they had to delay the start of the show as people looked for a place to park.

I was also alerted to this wonderful interview in the Detroit Free Press with our pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone who wrote the music. Several members of the Detroit Symphony will be in the orchestra, as they were in Palla Eius. I'm providing a link to the article, but it may disappear offline after a few weeks so I am also adding the text and picture here that appeared in the Thanksgiving Day 2008 issue of the Detroit Free Press.

When the Assumption Grotto Catholic Church decided to put on a show to commemorate its 175th anniversary last year, organizers thought it might attract a few hundred people. Instead, nearly 1,600 folks filled folding chairs in the church's old gym auditorium over three weekend performances.

This success has led to a second, even more ambitious musical production, again composed and conducted by the church's pastor, the Rev. Eduard Perrone. It's being performed Wednesday and Dec. 5 and 7.

Set in the 1920s, "The Heritance" is the story of a man, made mean by the death of his wife, who softens when he meets an orphan girl.

The show includes 45 cast members (many of them children) and 12 musicians, including some members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Perrone, 60, has been pastor at the historic church for 14 years. As the son of Detroit big band musician Phil Perrone, he comes by his love of music naturally. A graduate of Cass Tech High School, he also studied composing and conducting at the University of Louisville and the Aspen School of Music before becoming a priest.

QUESTION: How do you describe the musical style of "The Heritance"?

ANSWER: There's a little of everything in this work: Broadway-style music, romance, jazz, fugue, etc. The music is modern but singable. ... I especially enjoy the instrumental pieces, which afford me a chance to test my writing skills.

Q: How does the parish community (or the community in general) benefit from these theatrical works?

A: Theater with music has a way of lifting people from the tedium and worry of their ordinary lives and makes them aspire to great things. Among those who greeted the last musical with particular appreciation were many beyond our own parish. I could see that there was a sincere interest in doing more of the same and offering it for the wider community.

Q: Children are a huge part of the show. What do you think they take away from this experience?

A: Children have a remarkable capacity to do things well beyond what is usually expected of them. With direction and instruction, our kids have proved their capabilities to act, sing, dance and to develop their personalities through theater. The educational value of this kind of experience for youth is inestimable.

Q: What do you want to say in "The Heritance," especially in response to what you have called (in the show's press release) "the vacuum of evil" that now defines popular music, TV, literature and film?

A: Yes, I think the message of popular music, especially rock music, has demoralized our kids, hopefully not our kids, or your kids, but then again, who's to say?

The show is a modern morality play, but very subtle. There are religious themes in it, but they are not bathed in halos or religious sentimentality. There's humor, sadness and love, as well as faith.

Theater, I think, should be uplifting, inspirational, and there should be a catharsis involved, causing the audience to go back into the light of day enthused and renewed.

Q: What has been the response from the Catholic archdiocese?

A: Priests, some nuns and a bishop attended last year and were very supporting and even surprised at the level of our achievement. It helps put a good face on the church as a supporter of the arts, a role it had historically but with which it is not so often associated today.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Of all the things we must do on this American holiday of Thanksgiving, is to give thanks to God. At the top of my list is a thanks to Him, the Author of life for creating me and giving me an opportunity to be with Him for all eternity. I thank Him for the Mother to whom he sent me, who said, "yes" to life. I thank Him for the job that enables me to have a roof over my head, food on my table, for the heat that keeps me warm, and the water I can get right out of a faucet in my home. I thank Him for my family and friends.
Among my many other thanks to God is my thanks for a great parish - Assumption Grotto, with her many faithful priests who teach the faith with great clarity and simplicity. I am grateful that they give of themselves generously with all of the sacraments, especially the Mass and Confession. I am thankful too that they pass along this great heritage of the Catholic faith in all of its fullness and richness. Without it, I wouldn't have come to appreciate the Real Presence in the Eucharist, Adoration, and how to appreciate that I can come to know Jesus even better through his own Mother, whom was given to all mankind with those famous words on the Cross, "behold your Mother!"
For these and many other things, I now head out the door to Holy Mass. Assumption Grotto always has a good turnout at their annual 9:00am Thanksgiving Day Mass. It's a new tradition for me - one that never crossed my mind until I found this parish in 2005.
Oh - and thank God for blog readers. I include you all in my intentions this morning.

Catholic Legislators and FOCA - What is a Bishop to do?

Canon Lawyer, Ed Peters, who teaches at nearby Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit has an interesting post up about Catholic pols and FOCA. He begins as follows:

Canonical options for dealing with Catholic legislative support for FOCA. The final wording of the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) has yet to be set, but there is every indication that it will be the most radical piece of pro-abortion legislation ever proposed at the federal level. The near certainty that FOCA will be re-introduced (compounded by the increased likelihood that it will pass and be signed into law) means that, ready or not, Catholic bishops will have to face squarely the problem of well-known Catholic legislators supporting a specifically and gravely evil bill. As I see it, bishops have four options for dealing with Catholic legislators who support FOCA:

Feast of Christ the King

The center of the Ghent Altarpiece (Van Eyck, c 1425)

Today is the Feast of Christ the King in the ordinary form. In the extraordinary form, The Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ, was celebrated on the last Sunday in October.

It was in 1925 that Pope Pius XI gave to the Church, Quas Primas, the Encyclical on the Feast of Christ the King. I have not had a chance to read this entire document, but something did catch my eye that I would like to share:

25. Moreover, the annual and universal celebration of the feast of the Kingship of Christ will draw attention to the evils which anticlericalism has brought upon society in drawing men away from Christ, and will also do much to remedy them. While nations insult the beloved name of our Redeemer by suppressing all mention of it in their conferences and parliaments, we must all the more loudly proclaim his kingly dignity and power, all the more universally affirm his rights.
What was written in 1925 still applies today. The kingdom is not of this world, nor should we conform ourselves to secularism and humanism which has permeated all facets of society. As members of the Church succumb to these ideologies, the Mystical Body suffers much like the human body when infection exists in one small area.

Here are some related links, not necessarily from this year:

As an aside, Fr. Z has an interesting note about another event: This day in ancient history

Learning the Faith: Healing the Spirit Series with Fr. Brian Mullady, OP

If you are around me for any length of time you will learn that I hate getting up early, but love being up early. I hit the snooze a few times this morning, but managed to be up by 6:00. After finishing Lauds, I made breakfast and turned on EWTN. There was a very good, half-hour show called Healing the Spirit. It was, I believe, episode 7 which was about grace and prayer.

I have known about the Dominican priest, Fr. Mullady, as I had seen him many times on the network and he is a contributor to Homiletic and Pastoral Review - the only subscription that I have kept (it's not news based so the information is timeless and the writers are solid). Like other EWTN personalities he is very catechetically and theologically solid. He speaks with great simplicity.

He spoke about the various attitudes we can have concerning prayer from wanting to find "the right method" to enter contemplation to thinking that "if only it weren't for [fill in the blank], I could live more holy". He brought up a quote by Fr. Dubay - another well-loved spiritual master and EWTN personality that I thought was great. [post edited here for original quote taken from, The Fire Within, page 247]

Most people would not even cross the street to witness an unobtrusive act of patience being put into practice, but they will cross an ocean to visit the locale of an alleged apparition. While both Teresa and John appreciated an authentic vision, they were empathetic that a simple act of pure love is of more value.

He mentioned St. Teresa of Avila and the mansions and covered some common errors people make with regards to prayer. He really packed a lot - effectively, in just 30 minutes.

If someone has the book in which Fr. Dubay makes this statement, please write it into the combox or email me at TeDeumBlog@gmail.com. I would like to edit this post with the exact quote. It was classic Fr. Dubay: powerful, yet simple.

Anyway, I highly recommend watching this series and if you are blessed with a secure job right now, get the DVD's. You would be supporting EWTN while at the same time, having a great spiritual watering hole you will likely watch more than once. Fr. Mullady has a number of other great talks on DVD.

Samples from HPR can be found online. They publish one or two articles per month online out of the dozen or so that are in the print edition. It is one of the best monthly, Catholic reads you can get. It even has a section of homilies for the Sundays of the upcoming month so if you are in a parish where you get a lot of namby-pamby, you'll appreciate them.

I just got an email that through the HPR Online site there is a special trial offer to get HPR for one year at $9.95 (11 issues). Try this periodical - I can guarantee you will renew at the regular cost of $26 for 11 issues. I read it cover to cover when I get mine.

The Time for Catholic Complacency is Over....

Watch this video recently uploaded to YouTube. Watch it soon because stuff like this disappears for "violation of the Terms of Service" all the while total filth is permitted to run up 50 million hits.

Keep in mind that in various parts of the world Catholics - including priests and religious, and other Christians, are dying because of their faith. What this video is about, is white martyrdom - dying to self.

This means letting go of TV time to pray and getting off the computer to call a politician to tell them to vote against culture of death legislation. It means making a commitment to getting to Mass every Sunday and sometimes during the week, and praying the Rosary as a family.

It means taking the time to educate yourself - learning not just about the faith, but why certain teachings, loathed by the world, are what they are. Most people who study the leading documents of the Church on certain topics come to realize just how much thought went into them.

We can't afford to be complacent any longer because it is up to us to help others along.

Christ didn't say the road would be broad, but narrow. He didn't say it would be easy, but difficult.

Rumor: Change coming at Congregation for Divine Worship?

This is a big one.

Is this Cardinal retiring next month....

And, being replaced by this Cardinal?

There is considerable buzz on the internet that with the 76 year old Cardinal Arinze's Jubilee coming up on November 23 it is thought that his replacement will be announced.....soon. It just so happens that the Cardinal from Spain was received by the Holy Father today, in audience, as reported by the Vatican's daily Bollettino (and provided later in English at the Vatican Information Service - VIS).

Both Fr. Z and the New Liturgical Movement have more.

Many had long hoped for the candid Archbishop Ranjith, the current Secretary of the CDW would get the job. However, Cardinal Llovera is also very good. Scroll down to read the NLM post from June, entitled: "The Little Ratzinger" to head CDW?

If you want a clue about his liturgical taste, a picture is worth a thousand words:

Real Catholic TV gets a Green Rating from Catholic Culture

One particular site that has been very useful to me is Catholic Culture. I regularly consult their site reviews. Here, explained at the site:

The Catholic Culture staff assigns grades to each web site it reviews. Individual grades are given in three distinct areas: Fidelity (to the Magisterium), Resources(Quality and Quantity), and Usability.

Please continue reading to find out more! (Click here to read about the ratings system in detail).

Today, I learned in the broadcast below, that Real Catholic TV has earned a green rating at Catholic Culture which means it meets all criteria favorably.

You can watch several things free each day. I use the "full screen mode" and let it run. Here is the news for today with Vic Faust. I encourage you to watch the whole clip as there are several stories in here that I wanted to cover, but just don't have time. That is the benefit of watching the news each day at Real Catholic TV is you pick up several Catholic and culture of life stories in a matter of minutes. You can also watch Michael Voris' brief commentaries in the Vortex, as well as watch a clip about the saint of the day, and what took place on this day. There are also video clip messages coming in from Bishops that you can watch for free. Real Catholic TV has many premium options too for $10.00 monthly - unique programming.

I don't embed as many samples from Real Catholic TV as I would like because they seem to make the loading of my homepage buggy. I've reported it previously and don't know if it's unique to blogger or not. Drop me an email at TeDeumBlog@gmail.com if you experience any problems with my homepage stalling to load with this video embedded. The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

When you think things are bad here in America....

But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" (Job 2:10a)

With so much dire economic and anti-life news filling the air, it's easy to feel depressed. We need to keep some things in mind...

The thought that babies are murdered at any stage of development, is maddening to me. It's barbaric and reflective of an uncivilized people. As I continue to work and pray for an end to the silent, hidden slaughter with many of you, I try to keep something simple in mind: As much as I love those babies, God loves them more than I ever could. I don't have nearly the capacity to love the unborn as does God, the author of life. Further, God's love is unconditional. Hence, he loves the abortive mother and father, as well as the abortionist. It is in this light that we pray and make sacrifices in our lives for the God-pleasing conversion of these people.

In the history of the Church, there have been atrocities committed by rulers. The hunt for the Christ child involved the murder of the Holy Innocents. One of the greatest persecutors of the early Church was Diocletian (245-313 AD). From the online Catholic Encyclopedia:

Three further edicts (303-304) marked successive stages in the severity of the persecution: the first ordering that the bishops, presbyters, and deacons should be imprisoned; the second that they should be tortured and compelled by every means to sacrifice; the third including the laity as well as the clergy. The atrocious cruelty with which these edicts were enforced, and the vast numbers of those who suffered for the Faith are attested by Eusebius and the Acts of the Martyrs. We read even of the massacre of the whole population of a town because they declared themselves Christians (Eusebius, loc. cit., xi, xii; Lactant., "Div. Instit.", V, xi).

There is nothing that can happen to me that God does not either will, or permit. How I respond is what matters. Our Lord led by example, shows us that life is not simply made up of Christmas and Easter, but the way of the Cross, as well.

Brethren, join in imitating me, and mark those who so live as you have an example in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself. (Phil 3:17-20)

Merely accepting the pain of comprehending the evil of something like abortion is something that can be offered up as a sacrifice along with our prayers. God is "consoled" when we accept the suffering that comes to us - physical, emotional, and spiritual - when we unite it with His suffering. It is one of the many crosses we can bear because Evil has been with us since the beginning of time.

On the economic front, we see layoffs happening daily and companies collapsing left and right. People are rightfully conserving cash because they don't know if they will have a job tomorrow and it is resulting in more lost jobs. But, I go back to point one: There is nothing that can happen to me without God's willing it, or permitting it.

It could be that God will call some of us to the loss of job and home, and into deep hardship. How will we respond? We can mourn the loss of things like cable and internet, as well as new clothes and insurance-paid doctor visits and prescriptions. We can loath the thought of buying cheaper grades of food, used clothes, and passing time by reading books and playing board games. Somehow, I wonder if God doesn't have lessons for us to learn through such things. The "good life" is not a prerequisite for getting into heaven. In fact, the opposite may be true as it is easier to become lukewarm in the faith amidst material comfort.

My thoughts turn to the kind of reality lived by our suffering brothers and sisters around the world on a dialy basis for years - people struggling to survive not only the heavy cross given them, but life itself.

If things are bad enough to get you down today, please read some of these articles. They are not meant to depress you further, but to show that as bad as we have it, someone else has it far worse. It is only by the grace of God that we are not in their shoes. Spend some time thanking God for the many blessings that you do have. As you will see, suffering for the sake of Christ is still endured by Christians today. We may lose our jobs and our homes, but we can still practice our faith without the level of persecution experienced by others. Therefore, endure all for the sake of Christ. Offer up the suffering in reparation for the offenses to God happening around the world - seen, and unseen.

Pro-Choice Catholic Chosen to Run Health and Human Services

I have not been home much and got int the door not long ago. It is late and I have to get up quite early. I can only refer you to some good stuff out there on this subject. Things are going to get interesting in the Church here in America as so many pro-choice Catholics get put into positions that will put them at odds with teaching.

Former senator Tom Daschle (D-SD) has been chosen by Obama to run Health and Human Services - the administrative arm which will usher in FOCA

There is some interesting background floating around the blogosphere worth reading up on with regards to Daschle and Bishop Carlson - formerly of Sioux Falls, SD and now of Saginaw, MI. (Please Lord, we in Detroit would love to have Bishop Carlson when Cardinal Maida retires).

I'll refer you to these posts and old news articles:

ACTION ALERT! — Urge Michigan Senate to defeat so-called “hate crime” law

From the American Family Association (emphasis mine in bold)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Thurs., Nov. 13, 2008

CONTACT: Gary Glenn 989-835-7978

Family values group criticizes Michigan House passage of “hate crime” bill

“Divisive and discriminatory” bill violatesequal justice under law, group says

LANSING, Mich. — A statewide family values group late Thursday criticized the Michigan House of Representatives for approving legislation that would provide more severe prison sentences for crimes against certain individuals based on their membership in special “protected class” categories.

Gary Glenn, Midland, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, labeled the legislation “divisive and discriminatory.”

“All citizens should receive equal protection under the law,” Glenn said, “a principle this legislation clearly violates when it provides that a criminal who attacks a small child or a pregnant mom or a senior citizen should be punished less severely than someone who assaults a grown man, solely because that grown man engages in homosexual activity.”

“Because it segregates victims of crime into specially protected categories based on behavioral characteristics such as homosexual behavior or cross-dressing, then doles out more severe sentences for attacking someone in one of those special categories, it sends the discriminatory message that some individuals are worthy of greater protection by society than others,” Glenn said. “Someone who attacks your 75-year old grandmother might get six months in jail, but under this bill, would get a harsher and longer prison sentence for attacking a 25-year old man just because he engages in homosexual behavior.”

Glenn said his group will urge the state Senate to reject the bill.

“We will ask Michigan families to join us in urging the state Senate to stop this divisive and discriminatory legislation that also threatens religious free speech rights, that has already been used in other states to prosecute citizens merely for publicly expressing their religious conviction that homosexual behavior is wrong,” he said.

Glenn cited the arrest in 2005 of a multi-racial group of Christians — including a 75-year old African-American grandmother — who were arrested in Philadelphia and prosecuted under that state’s “hate crime” law merely for reading Bible verses on a public street during a “gay pride” festival. http://www.stophatecrimesnow.com/

“Consistent with their attempts to silence critics of the homosexual agenda through fear and intimidation tactics such as disrupting church services in Lansing,” he said, “homosexual activists would similarly use this new law if enacted to try to suppress the religious free speech rights of their critics here in Michigan.”

Glenn pointed to a news release earlier this year in which the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force suggested that he and Cardinal Adam Maida — because they publicly supported a Marriage Protection Amendment to the state constitution — should be held responsible as accessories to the falsely alleged beating death of a homosexual man in Detroit. “It is appalling hypocrisy for these forces to pretend that their venomous words and organizing have no connection to the plague of hate violence against gay people, including the murder of Mr. Anthos,” NGLTF said.

Detroit police and the Wayne County Coroner’s office later announced there was no evidence of any assault and that the man died of a head injury resulting from a fall caused by arthritic paralysis of his neck.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Nov 17, 2008

Coming soon...

Fr. Perrone has kindly sent me his homilies from this past Sunday (Noon), the previous Sunday (9:30am), and from the 40 Hours Devotion closing ceremony.

I don't have time right now, but will soon upload them one at a time, sequentially.

They are very..... Perronesque!

Skewered in North Carolina: A Pastor Speaking to His Flock about Voting for Pro-Abortion Obama

I have not had time to get the news to you, which you have undoubtedly already heard about from other sources, about Fr. Jay Scott Newman in Greenville, SC.

Fr. Newman is well known among internet Catholics of a traditional bent. It wasn't that long ago that he catechized his parish on the ad orientem celebrated liturgy, and then did it. That is, he started to face the wall altar, leading his parishioners into prayer. Scroll down here to see his explanation.

Unfortunately, and not unexpected, the mainstream media (MSM) has skewed the story which ultimately led to the skewering of the pastor by the diocesan administrator (Greenville is without a bishop at the moment).

Barbara Karalis has some very good, well referenced, in depth analysis of this entire situation. I lead you to her posts.

Photopost: Helpers of God's Precious Infants Prayer Vigil - Nov 15, 2008 with Msgr. Jeffrey Montforton

The Very Rev. Monsignor Jeffrey M. Montforton leads the Rosary outside of two abortion clinics where about 200 people braved pouring rain. As you will see, the rain adversely affected the quality of most outdoor pictures, including this one.

The current rector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Monsignor Jeffrey Montforton led the November 15, 2008 Helpers of God's Precious Infants (HGPI) Prayer Vigil. The day began at Assumption Grotto Parish in Detroit with 7:30am Mass, celebrated by the monsignor. Mass was in the ordinary form, using the low, table altar.

It was concelebrated by a priest of the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross, and order with offices on the grounds of the parish. The theme of the homily, delivered by Monsignor, was to stand up for life at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end.

People then made their way to nearby St. Veronica parish at 8:30 where they prepared for the next phase of the quarterly vigil: A Rosary procession. About 200 people processed in pouring, icey rain, about 4 blocks to 8 Mile where they prayed on the boulevard across from two abortion clinics.

You will see that the procession was done under the banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life, another pro-life apostolate, explains the connection between this image of Mary and the pro-life movement.

At around 10:30am, about half the people returned to Assumption Grotto where the pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone offered Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament. The lounge was packed with standing room only, along with a few stragglers in the hallway as people had refreshments and listened to HGPI-Michigan president Dan Goodnow, and Mary, one of the apostolates sidewalk counselors. Before the meeting began, Fr. Perrone stopped in and offered a few words of encouragement and another blessing.

Gotta watch TV - EWTN's World Over Live - tonight!

It sounds like Raymond Arroyo will be talking about the USCCB meeting on World Over Live tonight. This will be a great episode. I've been hearing his commentaries in Ave Maria Radio archives with Teresa Tomeo and this ought to be very interesting. I wouldn't be suprised to see his periodic sidekick, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus there.

I won't say anymore than that. Just tune in or record it.

EDIT: Ok - I'll say this much....I believe in addition to the whole abortion discussion, there will be talk about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and ACORN.

You can catch it online by going to EWTN.com and clicking the Television tab, then choosing one of the live options. It starts 8:00pm EST.

Go to the World Over Live homepage at EWTN to see other times that it will rebroadcast if you should see this too late. I think your last chance is 4:00pm EST Sunday.

UPDATE: Fr. Neuhaus was not a guest. However, Raymond did a taping with two bishops during the week that he played: Bishop Martino of Scranton and Bishop Naumann of Kansas City. Bishop Martino will be remembered for his own prophetic statement (as pointed out by Rocco Palmo):

In the public session, this past campaign cycle's most-forthright hierarchical voice said that his confreres would one day have to deal with their collective "reticence" on the question of Catholic politicians who support abortion rights in defiance of church teaching.

In the World Over Live segment, Raymond that comment was seen in replay along with those of other bishops. Since the show focused on personal finance and the economy in the first half, the discussion about pro-abort politicos and the CHD/ACORN matter came about half way through the program.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Saturday: Helpers of God's Precious Infants - Prayer Vigil

Just a reminder that Sacred Heart Major Seminary Rector, Msgr. Jeffrey Montforton will be at Assumption Grotto for the 7:30am Mass to kick off and lead the November 15, 2008 Helpers of God's Precious Infants prayer vigil.

We will then drive to St. Veronica's just off of Gratiot near 8 Mile and process to two nearby abortion clinics praying all decades of the Holy Rosary. This is not a protest nor is it confrontational. Rather, four times yearly, bewteen 150-300 people pray on the 8 Mile islands between traffic, led by a bishop or other prominent member of the diocese as Helper's sidewalk counselors provide alternative solutions to women seeking abortions. Most months we are blessed with "turns" as young women, some of them being forced, take advantage of the help offered to bring their babies into the world.

As was announced at the 7:30am Mass, we will be holding an Ordinary Form Mass in English, instead of the pastor's daily Traditional Latin Mass this Saturday only.

I don't know how successful I will be at getting photos of the event, given weather predictions, but I will try to get some of the Mass.

Keep in mind, that babies are aborted regardless of whether it is nice out or not. Rain, snow, and sleet do not deter abortions. Nor should it deter our being there. Dress warm, bring an umbrella or wear rain gear.

All are invited to return to Grotto following the procession, which typically ends around 10:00, where one of the priests will offer Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament, followed by refreshments and a followup meeting.

You can hear an interview of Msgr. Montforton with Teresa Tomeo of Catholic Connection online in the November 12, 2008 local segment. It may be a little later in the broadcast so just let it run.

Select Photoposts of Past Vigils:

I regret that I do not have photos from Bishop Boyea when he led the vigils. All of the Detroit bishops have been very supportive of HGPI-Michigan events and the number of people involved is growing. Helpers is always looking for people to join in the day-to-day effort of praying and sidewalk counseling. For contact info, visit the HGPI-Michigan blog.

Inoperable Brain Tumor Heighten's Faith of Young Naval Officer

I spotted this over at the New Liturgical Movement blog. Initially, I was going to make a post and ask you all to include this man in your prayers. However, upon visiting a new blog he set up in which he is logging his spiritual thoughts, I believe we should spend some time there learning from him. He is obviously acting on some solid graces.

His name is Philip Johnson. He is a 24 year old Catholic with a deep appreciation for good liturgy. The header on his blog, In Caritate Non Ficta, reads:

On October 15, 2008, after two years as an officer in the Navy, my life changed when I was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Putting my concerns in the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary and my trust in Our Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that I may be faithful to the Holy Catholic Faith and serve the Church for the rest of my life.

In this post, and in this post, he explains deeper his medical predicament.

As a Carmelite, what strikes me is his spirituality. In his November 13th post, Deriving Strength from the Eucharist, he starts out with the following (click the title link to read his entire post, which I recommend).

I have received many emails asking how I can be so "joyful" and content after learning that I have a brain tumor. There are many factors involved, including the fact that a severe illness forces one to focus on eternal life with God rather than "worldly kingdoms." For those who focus on this short earthly life, it is very difficult to deal with an illness over which one has little control. For those who focus on eternity, it is possible to see this life as a "stepping stone" to eternal happiness with Our Lord. After coming to this realization, suffering and death are not only easier to accept, but are welcomed with a deep desire to be united to Our Lord's cross and to spend eternity with Him in heaven.

To give us strength to live out our daily lives, Our Lord Jesus Christ has given us a great gift - the gift of Himself in the Blessed Sacrament. In the Most Holy Eucharist, Christ gives Himself to us - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity - and I must credit this great gift as my source of strength in this difficult time in my life. As Catholic faithful, we can reap the spiritual benefits of this great gift by receiving frequent Holy Communion, and by adoring Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar....[snip].
I will be praying for Philip Johnson and ask you all to do the same. However, use this opportunity to learn about the faith through this words. They feed the soul like a watering hole after a night in the desert.

He has entrusted himself to Jesus and Mary. May he find comfort in their Sacred and Immaculate Hearts, and lead many more to them.

The Church is Not Burger King - You can't "have it your way!"

Canon Lawyer Ed Peters has a new post up about 69 year old Maryknoll priest, Father Roy Bourgeois, who has been given an ultimatum: Recant support for women's ordination in 30 days or face excommunication.

In his reply to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, made public here, Father Bourgeois, wrote, in part:

I was very saddened by your letter dated October 21, 2008, giving me 30 days to recant my belief and public statements that support the ordination of women in our Church, or I will be excommunicated.

I have been a Catholic priest for 36 years and have a deep love for my Church and ministry.

When I was a young man in the military, I felt God was calling me to the priesthood. I entered Maryknoll and was ordained in 1972.

Over the years I have met a number of women in our Church who, like me, feel called by God to the priesthood. You, our Church leaders at the Vatican, tell us that women cannot be ordained.

With all due respect, I believe our Catholic Church’s teaching on this issue is wrong and does not stand up to scrutiny. A 1976 report by the Pontifical Biblical Commission supports the research of Scripture scholars, canon lawyers and many faithful Catholics who have studied and pondered the Scriptures and have concluded that there is no justification in the Bible for excluding women from the priesthood.

Setting aside many problematic things in his letter, there is one underlying thing here that goes terribly wrong: All those Scripture scholars, canon lawyers and many "faithful" Catholics are not the teaching authority of the Catholic Church. They do not make up the Magisterium.

Pray for this priest and all of the people being scandalized by his refusal to humbly submit to the teachings of the Church.

In that link I provided above that contains his letter are comments from many who encourage Father to press on. One suggests:

If he is excommunicated he will join a large band of angels. I am sure that God pays no attention to the vituperation of the earthly band of overly-fed, overly-pampered, overly-cautions synchophants called church hierarchy.

Stick to your guns, Roy ... fidelity to conscience is more important than that dog collar around your neck.

DuhThe Church is not Burger King!

He may very well join a large band of angels, but they won't be heavenly. The root of all sin is pride. There is a false humility that runs large among those who treat Church teachings with open defiance. Rather than exhibit true humility as Mary did when the Angel Gabriel appeared to her: "Let it be done unto me...", their mantra is "Your way Lord.....as long as it agrees with mine".

Is it any wonder why this group is often indifferent toward's the Blessed Mother or holds her in disdain? She is the new Eve who rejected pride in humble obedience to the will of God for her.

The defiant attitude we see belongs to the "either/or" crowd - the one that tries to pit peace and justice against humility and obedience; and the Iraq war against abortion. Mother Teresa proved that peace and justice worked right along side humility and obedience (and perhaps that is why she is held in disdain by some in this group). And, you can't compare nearly 50,000,000 lives of the unborn lost to several thousand in the Iraq war. All lives are valuable and the 50 million can't be ignored.

I have also found the propensity running high among them for using the priest scandal as an excuse to set aside authentic dialogue and reason. At the very least, the priest scandal is used to divert attention away from the subject at hand. Judas was a priest called by Jesus, yet God gave him, as he gives all, a free will. We will always have "Judas" among the priests because God does not force them to choose good over evil, virtue over vice, or holy boldness over nonfeasance.

Folks, there can only be one true North, where the compass points. One cannot go south and proclaim that it is north because he wants it to be so. Catholics need to understand that we rely on a compass to tell us where North is and that compass is the Catholic Church. Otherwise, we would have some people going East and want to proclaim it as North, while others are going West or South and want those to be proclaimed as North.

Jesus Christ is Truth. There can't be different versions of the truth any more than there could be different types of Jesus to pick and choose from. But, that is what some are trying to do - to treat the Church like Burger King where you can, "have it your way".

ILL-FORMED AND MALFORMED PRIESTS
The fact that Father Bourgeois was ordained in 1972 says alot. Seminaries were malforming priests heavily by that time. Not only were things lacking in their formation and education, but there were perversions of Church teaching given to them. High on that list of missing or perverted teachings was Magisterial authority. For this, I have pity on them.

It's why you don't hear about it in many parishes today. It's why you don't hear much about sacrifice, or mortification, or taming the will. Those things all require humility and hard work. And, they go against the "doctrine" of challenging authority. They require us to set aside our own feelings about a matter and to make a leap of faith, especially where we do not fully understand something. Faith doesn't follow understanding. Rather, faith seeks understanding. If we had to understand everything before we humbly accepted it, there would be no purpose for faith. You can't pit 2000 years of experience against hippy-era, loophole theology. Christ didn't say the defiant hippy-era ideals would survive the gates of hell, but the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Is it any wonder why the Creed is inconspicuously missing in some parishes today?

Seminarians are now blessed with the internet where they can read important documents like Dei Verbum (Word of God), Veritatis Splendor (Splendor of Truth), and letters issued like those below pertaining to women's ordination. No matter how the loophole theologians stuff the seminary shelves with dissenting material while purging it of time-tested classics, these young men are venturing out and reading what the Church really teaches.

No longer can seminary rectors and professors filter and sanitize what seminarians are learning because the internet brings them documents in seconds. They can, and do, try to pass along loophole tacticts, but I would remind people that Christ taught with simplicity. When someone tries to introduce fancy complexities, you can be assured the Father of Lies is providing the fuel.

Seminaries are also turning as a new generation of priests and bishops emerge and take over - the JPII generation. Don't be surprised when a new, young priest comes to your parish and doesn't embrace the Burger King theology of the previous generation. Parishes are also beginning to experience the change as this generation's influence moves in.

We must always turn anger and disdain for dissidents into prayer. It is best to have pity for them in our hearts, to pray for their salvation, and for the salvation of those being led astray by them.

Read the two documents below on the Male only priesthood. In the original 1994 document, Pope John Paul II explains why the Church does not have the authority to ordain women. It's not a preferential issue. It is theologically deep and all arguments were considered. Some simply cannot accept the final decision of Rome. The subsequent letter by then Cardinal Ratzinger, makes it clear that it belongs to the deposit of faith. The door has been closed for over 10 years now. It's now a matter of humble acceptance of what has been handed down.

Francis Cardinal George Issues Statement on Behalf of all Bishops - Of Unity and Obstacles

Fresh from the USCCB website:

Cardinal George Voices Hope for Obama Administration, Points to Possible Obstacles to Our Desired Unity

BALTIMORE—Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), voiced hope for the Obama Administration but pointed to possible obstacles to our desired unity, in a Nov. 12 statement at the end of the annual fall assembly of the USCCB.

"The bishops of the Catholic Church in the United States welcome this moment of historic transition and look forward to working with President-elect Obama and the members of the new Congress for the common good of all," he said.

He said that "the unity desired by President-elect Obama and all Americans at this moment of crisis will be impossible to achieve," if the administration's policies increase abortions.

"Aggressive pro-abortion policies, legislation and executive orders will permanently alienate tens of millions of Americans, and would be seen by many as an attack on the free exercise of their religion."

"We express again our great desire to work with all those who cherish the common good of our nation," he added. "The common good is not the sum total of individual interests: it is achieved in the working out of a common life based upon good reason and good will for all."

Cardinal George's remarks follow.

STATEMENT of the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

"If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor; if the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil." (Psalm 127, vs. 1)

The Bishops of the Catholic Church in the United States welcome this moment of historic transition and look forward to working with President-elect Obama and the members of the new Congress for the common good of all. Because of the Church's history and the scope of her ministries in this country, we want to continue our work for economic justice and opportunity for all; our efforts to reform laws around immigration and the situation of the undocumented; our provision of better education and adequate health care for all, especially for women and children; our desire to safeguard religious freedom and foster peace at home and abroad. The Church is intent on doing good and will continue to cooperate gladly with the government and all others working for these goods.

The fundamental good is life itself, a gift from God and our parents. A good state protects the lives of all. Legal protection for those members of the human family waiting to be born in this country was removed when the Supreme Court decided Roe vs. Wade in 1973. This was bad law. The danger the Bishops see at this moment is that a bad court decision will be enshrined in bad legislation that is more radical than the 1973 Supreme Court decision itself.

In the last Congress, a Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) was introduced that would, if brought forward in the same form today, outlaw any "interference" in providing abortion at will. It would deprive the American people in all fifty states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry. FOCA would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars. It would counteract any and all sincere efforts by government and others of good will to reduce the number of abortions in our country.

Parental notification and informed consent precautions would be outlawed, as would be laws banning procedures such as partial-birth abortion and protecting infants born alive after a failed abortion. Abortion clinics would be deregulated. The Hyde Amendment restricting the federal funding of abortions would be abrogated. FOCA would have lethal consequences for prenatal human life.

FOCA would have an equally destructive effect on the freedom of conscience of doctors, nurses and health care workers whose personal convictions do not permit them to cooperate in the private killing of unborn children. It would threaten Catholic health care institutions and Catholic Charities. It would be an evil law that would further divide our country, and the Church should be intent on opposing evil.

On this issue, the legal protection of the unborn, the bishops are of one mind with Catholics and others of good will. They are also pastors who have listened to women whose lives have been diminished because they believed they had no choice but to abort a baby. Abortion is a medical procedure that kills, and the psychological and spiritual consequences are written in the sorrow and depression of many women and men. The bishops are single-minded because they are, first of all, single-hearted.

The recent election was principally decided out of concern for the economy, for the loss of jobs and homes and financial security for families, here and around the world. If the election is misinterpreted ideologically as a referendum on abortion, the unity desired by President-elect Obama and all Americans at this moment of crisis will be impossible to achieve. Abortion kills not only unborn children; it destroys constitutional order and the common good, which is assured only when the life of every human being is legally protected. Aggressively pro-abortion policies, legislation and executive orders will permanently alienate tens of millions of Americans, and would be seen by many as an attack on the free exercise of their religion.

This statement is written at the request and direction of all the Bishops, who also want to thank all those in politics who work with good will to protect the lives of the most vulnerable among us. Those in public life do so, sometimes, at the cost of great sacrifice to themselves and their families; and we are grateful. We express again our great desire to work with all those who cherish the common good of our nation. The common good is not the sum total of individual desires and interests; it is achieved in the working out of a common life based upon good reason and good will for all.

Our prayers accompany President-elect Obama and his family and those who are cooperating with him to assure a smooth transition in government. Many issues demand immediate attention on the part of our elected "watchman." (Psalm 127) May God bless him and our country.

Video of Francis Cardinal George of Chicago at opening of Bishops General Assembly

The other day, I provided an excerpt from the address given in this YouTube video of Cardinal George speaking to fellow bishops at the opening of the General Assembly in Baltimore. Reading it is one thing, but watching and listening is quite another. About 5 minutes in, he draws a hearty round of applause from the bishops. Watch it and you will understand just how perfectly he formed his argument for life.

Plenary Session Address by Cardinal George (text)

I have more coming, but have been dealing with computer problems all evening. I still have not been able to find video of the afternoon discussion on abortion that the bishops had. I have found reports of them, but I would like to see the video. If someone finds one on YouTube or the USCCB website, please let me know.

Here is a link to another Q&A session with reporters which took place around 6:00pm

Recent Posts on Te Deum....

A cotillion with music from the 1700's (and some dressed for the period) was held as a fund raiser for Grotto's upcoming musical, The Heritance which will show in December. Once again, Father has the symphony being primed, along with the Assumption Grotto Choir. When auditions were held for last year's hit musical, Palla Eius, it was like pulling teeth to get people involved, especially the boys. This year, they couldn't get in the audition line fast enough. It's great fun and I pray everyone will duly support this with their presence and donations as they are solicited. I have more photos from the cotillion forthcoming.
I've been posting like mad and will probably continue for at least through the end of the USCCB General Assembly, which is over tomorrow. Here are some recent posts:

People ask: Is Obama the Anti-Christ?

I have been hearing for months, "Obama is the Anti-Christ". His home state lottery of Illinois yielded the mark of the beast, 6-6-6, on November 5, 2008. I have never believed he is THE Anti-Christ. I see that lottery number more as a stamp of approval by Satan on the culture of death and it's number one candidate.

I'm very glad that Fr. Philip Powell, OP offers some catechesis on the subject, lest people go wild with open-shut conclusions. He discusses the subject of Anti-Christ using the Catechism of the Catholic Church and makes some interesting points. In part, he says:

Now, without going into the 2,000 year-old history of how Christians have conceived the Anti-Christ from scripture, it is vital that we understand one Big Truth about the idea of the Anti-Christ: his appearance is NOT some future event; that is, the Anti-Christ is not coming "some day." He has come and gone many times and will likely come and go many more.

So, is he THE Anti-Christ?

Go read: Is Obama the Anti-Christ? at Father's blog to read his thoughts.

Were vocal pro-life bishops heard before the election?

Some recent polling statistics would suggest that Catholics in Missouri and Pennsylvania were less likely to vote for Barack Obama than they were for John Kerry in 2004. Recall that several bishops, especially Bishop Finn of Kansas City, MO and Bishop Martino of Scranton, PA actually made headlines in local papers.

In the link is audio of Bishop Finn just before the election. He just picked up the phone and called in to a local radio show. The Host, Chris Stigall, gave His Excellency a good opportunity to be heard with this unscheduled interview. In it, Bishop Finn told his flock to consider their eternal salvation explaining in detail how it could be affected.

Who can forget Bishop Martino crashing a forum in which some members of the faithful were attempting to persuade other Catholics that they could vote for Obama with a clear conscience. Martino made it clear it wasn't happening on his property. That alone made headlines across the US. As a great followup, Bishop Martino spoke up loud and clear at the USCCB's General Assembly on the matter, as Rocco reports:

In the public session, this past campaign cycle's most-forthright hierarchical voice said that his confreres would one day have to deal with their collective "reticence" on the question of Catholic politicians who support abortion rights in defiance of church teaching.
Go read more from the National Catholic Register in, "Did US Bishops Sway Catholic Voters?"

As of this morning, I'm still waiting for the "on demand" video from the USCCB's lively afternoon session, in which Bishop Martino made his point, to be uploaded. I'll look again tonight.

More on USCCB General Assembly tomorrow....

I was at work when EWTN was providing live coverage of the USCCB's General Assembly where some interesting public dialogue bewteen our bishops took place on "Catholic Teaching in Political Life". By the sounds of what I've been reading, it was ...... lively.

The video will be archived hopefully overnight and I'll get to look at it tomorrow and pull out some gems as I did with the discussion the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and ACORN.

For now, I will leave you with this entry from Rocco at Whispers in the Loggia, who is there covering the event. It's so refreshing to see a bishop acting, well ..... like a bishop!

Martino Speaks

In the public session, this past campaign cycle's most-forthright hierarchical voice said that his confreres would one day have to deal with their collective "reticence" on the question of Catholic politicians who support abortion rights in defiance of church teaching.

The history of the church's response to racism, Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton noted in a debate intervention (his second so far), would not be seen in the light it were today had Archbishops Joseph Rummel of New Orleans and Joseph Ritter of St Louis (later a cardinal) not imposed ecclesiastical sanctions on defiant public officials during the civil rights movement.

In this meeting's first public reference to Joe Biden, Martino said that he "cannot have a Vice President-elect coming to Scranton, saying he learned his values there, when those values are utterly opposed to the teaching of the church."

At the outset, Martino acknowledged that his comments might not be the most desired in the room... but even so, they came in his usual fluid, quick, forceful cadence.

Asked after the debate how the morning's executive session went, one prelate from the big center said "You just heard it." Several others later confirmed the impression.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development and ACORN discussed at USCCB General Assembly

In the last few months of the national election, the group ACORN came under fire for voter registration fraud and partisanship. The group, which is suppose to be non-profit and non-partisan, yet publicly backed the Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama.

As the dust-storm churned up sand, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) wound up in the vortex. Soon after it was revealed that funds have been funneled from the CCHD to ACORN for decades, it was learned that no funds were given to ACORN in 2008 after an embezzlement case surfaced from 8 years prior.

This topic was addressed at the USCCB's General Assembly currently taking place in Baltimore by Bishop Robert Morin. I taped the public discussion which EWTN aired live this afternoon and watched it a few minutes ago.

A primary beef some bishops and priests have with the CCHD is summed up perfectly by Fr. Richard John Neuhaus of First Things Magazine:

Which brings me, finally, to another and related matter that will surely be discussed in Baltimore and deserves to be on the agenda. The Campaign for Human Development (CHD) is an annual collection in parishes, usually on one of the last two Sundays in November. It used to be called the Catholic Campaign for Human Development but the Catholic was dropped, which is just as well since it has nothing to do with Catholicism, except that Catholics are asked to pay for it. Some bishops no longer allow the CHD collection in their dioceses, and more should not allow it. In fact, CHD, misbegotten in concept and corrupt in practice, should, at long last, be terminated.

Ten years ago, CHD was exposed as using the Catholic Church as a milk cow to fund organizations that frequently were actively working against the Church’s mission, especially in their support of pro-abortion activities and politicians. Now it turns out that CHD has long been a major funder of ACORN, a national community agitation organization in support of leftist causes, including the abortion license. ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) is under criminal investigation in several states. In the last decade CHD gave ACORN well over seven million dollars, including more than a million in the past year. It is acknowledged that ACORN, with which Sen. Obama had a close connection over the years, was a major player in his presidential campaign. The bishops say they are investigating the connection between CHD and ACORN. They say they are worried that it might jeopardize the Church’s tax-exemption. No mention is made of abusing the trust of the Catholic faithful.

What most Catholics don’t know, and what would likely astonish them, is that CHD very explicitly does not fund Catholic institutions and apostolates that work with the poor. Part of the thinking when it was established in the ideological climate of the 1960s is that Catholic concern for the poor would not be perceived as credible if CHD funded Catholic organizations. Yes, that’s bizarre, but the history of CHD is bizarre. The bishops could really help poor people by promptly shutting down CHD and giving any remaining funds to, for instance, Catholic inner-city schools. In any event, if there is a collection at your parish this month, I suggest that you can return the envelope empty—and perhaps with a note of explanation—without the slightest moral hesitation.
Some of that, and then some, was echoed by three bishops who raised questions or offered comments at the end of the address by Bishop Morin.

Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz asked pointedly whether funds are given to Catholic organizations or not. The answer was that they don't necessarily have to be Catholic.

It would be interesting to see some percentages and to get an understanding of what kinds of organizations are on the receiving end of funds. Do those organizations support the Catholic mission it's entirety, or just certain convenient parts?

Next up was Bishop Naumann, currently the administrator of the Diocese of St. Louis now that Abp Raymond L. Burke has moved on to the Vatican to head up the Church's equivalent of the Supreme Court. Bishop Naumann pointed out that in his diocese ACORN's partisanship was well known for at least 10 years. He called for an indepth evaluation of CCHD.

Consider that when we say that ACORN is involved with partisan politics we are talking about their backing of Democratic candidates, most of whom support legislation that counters Church teaching, such as with abortion, embyronic stem cell research and more. The Democratic Party has been dubbed the "Abortion Party" and the "Party of Death". Is it any wonder why some priests and bishops would not want to send funds to CCHD, given it's support for such organizations?

Last up was Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing, Michigan. He raised an interesting question that for lack of memory, I have to put in my own words. He wanted to know why the CCHD wouldn't provide support for married couples and families. [edit: bad wording because I believe the bishop was trying to understand if funds were going to activities that we would consider anti-family and anti-marriage). In other words, what His Excellency was trying to get at is whether we are simply aiding people in living lifestyles that are not conducive to marriage and family.

I suspect CCHD's funds are going to be drastically lower this year in light of what has come out and this will force a closer look at how the organization is structured, how it functions, and to whom those funds are going.

EDIT Nov 14: I heard Raymond Arroyo on Ave Maria Radio in an interview with Teresa Tomeo say that some people are stuffing paper acorns into the envelopes and submitting them. Raymond said he couldn't tell people what to do, but that he personally was not going to give any money (or acorns) to CCHD, but instead add it into his Peter's Pence envelope.

Reflecting a little more on Bishop Boyea's point, it started to come clear. You have to wonder whether some of the organizations supported by CCHD are involved in things like handing out condoms or contraceptives, encouraging or supporting abortions, or homosexual lifestyles.

Bishop Morin was clear on tape that the forensic accounting taking place now will be looking at the money trail itself, not what kinds of activities within each individual organization are being funded. This to me is a big problem. The activities should be aligned with the mission of the Church and no money should be going to organizations that engage in activities contrary to it.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

It's "Ineffable"!

This afternoon, thanks to EWTN, I got to watch the discussion of Bishops discussing the section of missal translation rejected in June. Earlier in the day, there were some interesting discussions and comments surrounding "Catholic Teaching in Political Life". I plan on heading over to Grotto and will try to put something together after I return.

Back to the liturgical issue at hand - the Proper of Seasons for the new rendering of the Roman Missal, there was a bit of interesting discussion surround the word "ineffable". Bishop Trautman of Erie, PA suggested that the word "divine" or "eternal" be used as a substitution for "ineffable". His argument was that the ordinary person will not understand it.

Bishop Allen Vigneron of Oakland asked whether it should be "divine" or "eternal" to which Bishop Trautman said, "Divine". Well, let's look at the definition of "ineffable".

  1. Incapable of being expressed; indescribable or unutterable. See synonyms at unspeakable.
  2. Not to be uttered; taboo: the ineffable name of God.
I believe it was Divine Worship Chair Bishop Serratelli who explained that neither "divine" or "eternal" fit as translations for "ineffable".

Former Auxiliary, Bishop Earl Boyea, now the Bishop of Lansing, won the day with applause when he suggested to his brother bishops: Let's just teach the people what "ineffable" means.

The bishops voted overwhelmingly for, "ineffable". But, not before Bishop Serratelli pointed out that "ineffable" was not an unspeakable matter (ok, so he made a funny).

I'm sure there will be video on these discussions available later. I consider WDTPRS - What Does the Prayer Really Say - the blog of Fr. Z, to be the best place to go for further commentary on all things liturgical. I also recommend visiting The New Liturgical Movement. The well stuffed comboxes alone are great to read, as well at these two sites.

Fr. Trigilio's Catechetical Crash Course: Pro-Abort Catholic Pols

Fr. John Trigilio of EWTN's Crash Course in Catholicism and author of many great books offers yet another clear catechetical lesson in yesterday's post: Thirty Pieces of Silver.

Give this man a violet biretta. "Bishop" Trigilio has a great ring to it, don't you think?

Read the entire entry. Here are some snippets (emphasis mine in bold):

IF some Catholics voted for Obama merely to save their 401K, then what is the difference had they been given thirty pieces of silver? Both are blood money and innocent blood at that.

The only time a Catholic can morally vote for a pro-choice candidate is when there is no viable pro-life opponent running against him/her. But we had a pro-life alternative, albeit not perfect, but more anti-abortion than Obama.

The courageous Bishops who enunciated this moral teaching preached to deaf ears, sad to say. While we are not one issue voters, there is a hierarchy of goods, values and principles, which must be respected. The RIGHT TO LIFE outweighs all other issues, no matter how serious or important.

Now that there is a PRO-ABORTION Catholic Vice President, the US Bishops have a once in a lifetime opportunity. Senator Joe Biden has stated unequivocally he knows abortion is wrong as life begins at conception BUT he also vehemently supports Roe v. Wade and will always support legal abortions. He and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and all Congressmen and Senators who refuse to repent and abandon their support for abortion must be denied Holy Communion AND face the real possibility of EXCOMMUNICATION. If the Vice President and the Speaker flagrantly show contempt for the Moral Law and Magisterial teaching which condemn abortion, they cause great scandal when they approach Holy Comunion.

Amen, Padre!

LOOPHOLE THEOLOGIANS UNDERMINING OUR BISHOPS
Now, I'm going to take it a step further and suggest we need to start writing our bishops, and to Rome, in order to pull the rug out from under loophole theologians who are given a paid platform at Catholic institutions to undermine our bishops. It is total madness that people like Doug Kmiec are permitted to say anything at all on any Catholic campus. That applies to other dissidents like Fr. Richard McBrien and others who have been permitted to act like wolves in the sheep pen for too long. I'll be posting more on this when I get the time to sit down and put something together. How many souls have to be lost before these people lose their good standing?

Check in periodically with Fr. Trigilio at his blog, The Black Biretta.

Don't just thank a veteran today; pray for them!

Whether they were drafted or joined the military voluntarily, we owe a great amount of gratitude to all who served. Some came home with wounded bodies, while others returned with wounded spirits and souls. As they saying goes, they sacrificed their tomorrow for our today.

Thank a Veteran today and while you are at it, say a prayer for them.

Bishops Meet in Baltimore in Annual General Assembly

Some 300 bishops are in Baltimore meeting as they do each year at this time, and there is much to pass along. Unfortunately, I finally sat down to write this post and it is already 9:43pm.

So, I have no choice but to leave you with coverage from others.

Rocco Palmo is an American Catholic reporter for The Tablet - an international Catholic weekly published in London. On his blog, Whispers in the Loggia, Rocco gives us a play-by-play, so if you want to know what is going on throughout the day, check his blog.

The first thing I want to draw your attention to is a paragraph from plenary session address by USCCB chief, Cardinal Francis George, OMI, of Chicago, who took the helm last year (emphasis mine in bold). I recommend reading the entire address to give this paragraph context and to read a few other gems I don't have time to sift through.

In working for the common good of our society, racial justice is one pillar of our social doctrine. Economic justice, especially for the poor both here and abroad, is another. But the Church comes also and always and everywhere with the memory, the conviction, that the Eternal Word of God became man, took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, nine months before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. This truth is celebrated in our liturgy because it is branded into our spirit. The common good can never be adequately incarnated in any society when those waiting to be born can be legally killed at choice. If the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision that African Americans were other people’s property and somehow less than persons were still settled constitutional law, Mr. Obama would not be president of the United States. Today, as was the case a hundred and fifty years ago, common ground cannot be found by destroying the common good.
Rocco noted earlier that Bishop Martino of Scranton was in the building. What is the significance of this? Well, Bishop Martino was not present at last years assembly. Just before the presidential election this year, he crashed a forum held on diocesan property in which some members of the faith were explaining how Catholics could vote for Obama. Calling it "madness", he admonished those present, duly catechizing them and said the USCCB doesn't speak for him and that his statement, clarifying Catholic teaching on voting was the authoritative document. A collective gasp and cheer could be heard from sea-to-shining-sea, that a bishop would act like.....well, a bishop.

There was a press conference that followed at 12:30pm, which Rocco also summarized. In a 30 minute video (click here and pick your speed), the bishops fielded only one liturgical question near the end. The other questions were on the campaign. If you have heard or read other accounts of what was said, I urge you to watch the video and judge for yourself.

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH OUR BISHOPS?
It's important to note that when the bishops were trying to prevent the situation we are in - dealing with a highly pro-abort presidential candidate, their language was much more forceful. Some are puzzled at the soft, and seemingly back-pedaling language now that Barack Obama is president-elect.

A couple of things to keep in mind: 1) The bishops have not had time to get their arms around the matter collectively. Some will feel strong about taking firm actions while others will still want to play [to] nice and, 2) Barack Obama IS the next US President and he doesn't have to listen to any group. He can make it look like he's listening, but he doesn't have to hear a thing.

The bishops have entered a new stage now - a diplomatic stage - and that is what they are setting up with the words and tone that you hear. When you read Cardinal George's statement in full that I provided, you will see that he gets it and is not going to compromise (read it a few times if you must). But, he doesn't want to have the door slammed in his face either. If you read the Holy Father's words, he is doing the same. They must keep the door open for diplomacy and their speech will now reflect that. There is a fine line they must walk now in getting Barack Obama to not only listen, but to hear. It won't happen with the verbal equivalent of a baseball bat.

ACORN AND CCHD
Something also noteworthy is that the bishops will discuss the matter of ACORN. The USCCB hired a forensic accountant to review contributions from Catholic Campaign for Human Development to the whacky community organizing group that endorsed Obama (even though it is supposedly non-partisan). Rocco reports:

The plenary's final public agenda-item late tomorrow afternoon will be a discussion of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development's relation to ACORN, the recently under-fire community organization. Due to the packed schedule -- which also includes reports on the recent Synod of Bishops and post-Hurricane Ike relief efforts in the Gulf Coast -- a later-than-usual end of session is expected.
In his Day One, Evening Wrap, Rocco provides a few excerpts from the day found in various publications who have representatives there covering the event. It's interesting to watch the video link I provided earlier, to read the statement by Cardinal George, and then to see the spin in some of those publications.

Hopefully, more tomorrow.

Now, GO PRAY FOR THE BISHOPS!!!

Thoughts on Forty Hours and Eucharistic Devotion

Closing ceremony from 2007
(click for more pics from last year - I did not photograph this year's ceremony)

The closing ceremony for the 2008 Forty Hours Devotion was held this afternoon at 3:00pm. Considering that there have been so many activities of late at the parish, I think the turn out was good.
The closing ceremony, which comes at the end of the three day vigil, involves readings, homily, the Litany of Saints (chanted in Latin), and a procession, followed by Divine Praises and Benediction. It lasted about 45 minutes and we had a good pot-luck dinner afterward.
Fr. Perrone had the honors this year of leading this ceremony, and delivered a beautiful homily. I am glad to report that Father has agreed to email me the text of that homily. He is also providing me with his homily from the 9:30am Mass which I missed, but had heard was very good. Stay tuned.
I went up the choir loft to assist - something that felt refreshing having been away from choir now for about half a year. While I was up there looking down at Fr. Perrone cradling Our Lord in the monstrance I got overwhelmed with a sense of joy and gratitude to God for the gift of such a pastor. It hit me all at once, that it is because of his devotion to the Eucharist that, through the grace of God, I was able to develop a devotion to the Eucharist. I momentarily pondered my spiritual life without all of this beautiful fanfare that has done so much to give me an appreciation for this great gift.
All of those thoughts flashing through my head as I watched the procession were such a contrast to the flashbacks of my days in "St. Suburbia" as we sometimes call it, where these things like Forty Hours Devotion, and even adoration for that matter, were absent. My life was not the same.
I recall my first trip to Assumption Grotto on Pentecost of 2005. I went back on Corpus Christi after having assisted at some weekday Masses. I had never seen a Eucharistic Procession until that day and I was amazed with the devotion of the people. I could see pure love for Our Lord in the Eucharist, in a way that was totally foreign to me.
What impresses me most about Grotto, is that for many, family life revolves around parish life, not the other way around. In fact, it's more: Family life is integral to parish life. This is visible in people's willingness to come with their families to such events. It's not possible for every family to participate in every event, but there are always many involved - together. These families understand that the faith is passed on by example. When children witness Mom and Dad spending time in adoration, they learn. Grotto children, in my humble opinion, are among the most patient and well-behaved kids I've ever been exposed to at any church (though parents always feel it could be better).
I feel so fortunate to be in a parish like Assumption Grotto, among priests who pass along the faith without ambiguity, and in it's entirety. I pray that Our Lady will keep Grotto under her Mantle for generations to come.

I was going through the the Ave Maria Radio archive of Teresa Tomeo's, Catholic Connection and stopped to listen to the November 7th, 2008 show There are multiple segments. The first part is Janet Morana. Following her is Fr. Joseph Fessio, SJ, originally brought on to talk about a new book, the The Book of All Saints by Adrienne von Speyr at Ignatius Press.

Prior to getting into the discussion of the book, they entered a pretty good talk about the Election results.

Fr. Fessio's comes on probably half way through this hour, but the whole thing is worth listening to.

Bishop Finn's Election Eve Sermon

I have much to post on, but haven't had time. In the last five days, my mother has been in and out of doctor's offices, the outpatient center where she received a blood transfusion (which went quite well), and is now in the hospital. I had to take her in late last night when her blood pressure would not come down and she remains there now. She is expected to be released today and I'm sure will bounce back as she has so many times before. Your prayers are appreciated.

Before I head back to the hospital, I wanted to pass along a link to something Fr. Z has on his site. He has obtained the text of a homily by Bishop Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph which was delivered on the eve of the election. Even though the election has come and gone, there is much to digest in what he says.

Forty Hours Devotion at Grotto this Weekend

One of the most beautiful events at Assumption Grotto is it's annual Forty Hours Devotion. A flyer in the bulletin this past weekend explained:

The 40 Hours Devotion remembers that traditional "forty-hour period" from our Lord's burial until the resurrection. The Forty Hours Devotion nurtures the love of the faithful for our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, three special dimensions have also surrounded this devotion: the protection from evil and temptation; reparation for our own sins and for the Poor Souls in Purgatory; and deliverance from political, material, or spiritual calamities. Here the faithful implore our Lord to pour forth His abundant graces not only for themselves, but also their neighbors, not only for their own personal needs, but for those of the world
Please come to Assumption Grotto for this beautiful devotion, rarely seen today.

There is a potluck as well at the closing ceremony, which is at 3:00pm Sunday. You may want to come to the Noon Mass and do some afternoon adoration, then stay for the potluck.

Blessed are They Who Mourn.....Obama's Win

A nation disregarded the gravest threat against the unborn and voted their pocketbooks, to make history, for their own sense of health and economic security, and for change. That all came at the expense of the unborn who remain a class of people who aren't considered people at all.
Barack Obama vowed to fight for all Americans. That is, all Americans except the unborn. The silent slaughter will now be exacerbated with President-elect Obama's promise to sign FoCA into law within the first 100 days. All of the individual state bans on partial-birth abortion and parental notification laws will be struck down if he succeeds in fulfilling his promise to Planned Parenthood. Given Obama's doctrine on abortion, it will probably work against the Born Alive Infant Protections Act, in which babies who survive botched abortions are currently required by federal law to receive life-saving treatment.
Even if I thought Obama had the best economic plan, the best approach to health care, for jobs, for national security, voting for him would have been like selling my soul for some temporal short-lived comfort.
What is most disappointing, is the Catholic Vote. It would appear that as a nation the Catholic vote went to Obama. What's more, is that it should be of little comfort to anyone, especially the bishops, that in those states where the Catholic vote supported McCain, it was only marginal. That 46% or 48% of Catholics voted for McCain, in contrast to some 74% of white, born again evangelicals is also disturbing news. They've got it right and a good many Catholics didn't.
Holy Mother Church and her bishops have much work to do. We must pray fervently for them, that they take all necessary actions to turn this around in the next four years. Unfortunately for millions of babies, it will be too late. It will take decades to undo the damage about to be done.
Forgive me for not believing that Obama's rise is not the will of God. Rather, I believe God is permitting this nation to suffer consequences of man's own sinfulness and greed. God can turn every evil into good. I'm not talking about health care or the economy. The good I'm talking about is the effect it will have on our bishops and priests as they must now reconcile with overwhelming evidence that Catholics have much to learn and they have much to teach.

Forty years I endured that generation.
I said, “They are a people
whose hearts go astray
and they do not know my ways.”
So I swore in my anger,
“They shall not enter into my rest.”

Our bishops made one of the most valiant efforts in recent weeks, with over 120 bishops making strong statements that life itself has priority. The intrinsic evil of abortion is so great, and the magnitude of unborn being murdered far outnumbers deaths in any other category. It is the moral issue of our day. You can't compare the number of people suffering from the Iraq War to the nearly 50 million already aborted. Over 4000 babies are aborted each day here in the US, and it's very possible that the number of late-term abortions are about to increase.

None of this minimizes the suffering of living, breathing people caught up in war. Rather, it underscores that the unborn aren't considered people at all, otherwise they would be a protected class with all of the rights provided for by our founding fathers, chiefly, the right to life.

Unfortunately, ignorance, confusion, and outright disregard for Catholic teaching could not be remedied by the good bishops no matter how valiant the effort. The bottom line is that it is a problem with a 35-40 year head start and it got deeply ingrained. Such things couldn't be resolved in weeks or months. God has been patient, enduring a deafening silence for decades from the pulpits of priest and bishop alike on abortion, contraception, extra-marital and pre-marital sex, homosexuality and more. But, the zeal and courage shown by certain bishops have given me real hope for the future of our Church, especially with the manner in which they witnessed the faith for a new generation of seminarians and priests.
Let's face it, most abortions are not taking place in the context of marriage. Rather, it is often the result of promiscuous sex outside of marriage - the primary product sold by Hollywood these days. One only has to look at the pregnancy rate of teenage girls who watch racier programs in contrast to those who don't watch those programs. Do the bishops have any idea just how many adult and teen Catholics regularly snack on programs like Desperate Housewives?
Remember your leaders
who spoke the word of God to you;
consider how their lives ended,
and imitate their faith.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday,
today, and forever.
Do not be led astray
by all kinds of strange teaching
(Hebrews 13:7-9a)
The silence and ambiguity on the part of most bishops over decades with regards to these things gave rise to dissident theologians who have participated in protecting free sex, and ultimately abortion. Their specialty is loop-hole theology, by which they give Catholics various ways to justify their anti-Catholic positions.
While bishops, cardinals, most theologians and Catholic apologists make strong and consistent cases in Catholic media, the dissident Catholic theologians like Richard McBrien have proven to be the darlings of secular media sources like the New York Times and CNN. Far more average Catholics - practicing and not - are probably getting their catechesis from the New York Times than from diocesan papers. Even some of those diocesan papers carry articles riddled with namby-pambyism on the part of waffling writers who don't seem to understand or communicate the faith with clarity.

What has further complicated all of this, is that dissident theologians and professors continue to enjoy "good standing" with the Catholic Church, and with their respective Catholic insitutions. This gives them a forum. Average, unsuspecting Catholics, as well as groups bent on distorting Catholic teachings are led into great scandal by them. They are the chief architects of dissent found throughout Catholic culture and the Church should stop paying them to do it and providing a platform for their anti-Catholic rhetoric. Think about that the next time you go to send your alma mater a check and send it to a college that is actually employing faithful professors.
No matter how much the bishops speak up, as long as dissidents have good standing at Catholic institutions, and remain a "representative" of the Catholic faith for the secular, loop-hole mentality media, things are not going to change in any appreciable way.
Today while others celebrate their victory with President-elect Obama, many will be silently mourning with Our Lord. Now, we need our bishops to teach us something else: How to make acts of reparation for offenses committed by the other 50%+ of Catholics who didn't vote pro-life, especially those in leadership positions who led large numbers of Catholics astray. The outcome of the election would have been quite different had far fewer Catholic votes gone to Obama.
Pray for President-elect Obama, his supporters, and for our bishops who have a most difficult task ahead of them. Given their recent zeal, I am hopeful that in their annual bishop's conference taking place in about a week from now we will see signs that they have learned some things from this election cycle. However, the first sign I will be looking for as a member of this Church, is for the scandalizing of Catholics by dissident theologians, professors, and politicians to be brought to a clear end. These people should no longer be permitted to represent the face of Catholicism. The only way they are accessible to the sources who regularly use them, is if they remain in good standing.

Now, we get on with mourning and with reparation.
Note: Edited at 4:48pm for clarity.

Photopost: 2008 Election Eve Adoration Vigil

The 2008 Election Eve Adoration Vigil at Assumption Grotto in Detroit had greater turnout than I expected. For the 7:00pm Mass which was concelebrated, I would estimate that there were roughly 200-250 people. Normally, the weekday evening Mass will net about 40-50 people. It was great to see so many people and I'm sure God appreciated the diffiulties some had in getting there on a work/school night. This is especially true considering that we are a commuter parish. And, there were so many kids and young people there for that Mass. People travel great distances for the Grotto experience. I know many wanted to be with us and couldn't be. There's no doubt in my mind that their prayers were joined with ours wherever they were.

I fully expected that by 11:00 or Midnight, we would see numbers taper off down to about one handful of people. Boy, was I wrong about that. The low of the night was about 25 at 3:00am, with up to 40+ in attendance through 11:30pm.

Quite a few people remained with Our Lord all night - perhaps 10-12, with only a few short coffee breaks (I think I made 4 or 5 pots in the vestibule).

I never did take any more pics after the Mass.

I felt somewhat sad after Benediction was done around 6:25am, watching Our Lord being reposed back into the Tabernacle. At the same time, I was glad that we would soon be able to receive Holy Communion at the 6:30am Mass.

I know a lot of stuff happened out there. Tell me about the prayer vigils and events at your parish for the election. Drop a note in the combox. But, it may take a while for me to post it. I just voted a short time ago and I'm heading into bed for a couple hours before take my Mom in for bloodwork.

EDIT: Who needs sleep? I will continue to update this as I find a few minutes.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

It's in God's Hands Now....

The election is now in the hands of voters, and ultimately in God's hands. If the culture of death candidate - Barack Obama - wins this election, I don't believe it will necessarily be God's will. Rather, it is a matter of permitting him to win in spite of the significant evil he represents with regards to life issues for the unborn.

It wasn't that long ago that some were personally opposed to slavery, yet did nothing because they didn't want to impose their views on others. Never mind that the views of a major stakeholder were not considered. That stakeholder, a human himself who was held captive wasn't considered human enough to be eligible for life and liberty.

Then there those who were personally oppossed to segregation, but again, certain stakeholders were left out of the equation - the affected students (or shall we say, disaffected).

We don't need a PhD to know today that these things were terribly wrong. In fact, when we look at them today, we ask how people could be so stupid!

It doesn't take a PhD to know that pulling a baby at 8 months, 3 weeks and 3 days through the birth canal by his feet, leaving his head undelivered where it can be punctured by an abortionists sheers, and it's brains sucked out, followed by further indignity of being dismembered is.......WRONG. There is NO possible health issue that would make partial birth abortion necessary. Yet, Barack Obama supports partial-birth abortion.

He has also vowed to sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act (FoCA) which will strike down parental notification laws and partial birth abortion bans in many states, giving abortion federal protection. It says nothing of Obama's unwillingness to sign on to legislation that require medical attention be given to babies who survived botched abortions (yes, it happens - they are burned in saline abortion solutions and come out alive, then are left on a shelf, or in the trash to die).

It is for these reasons that I can't believe that God, the author of life, would will such a man to become president as opposed to permit the consequence of man's sinfulness to get him elected. People are prideful and not wanting to do their homework to learn about the faith. As a result, they themselves want to define it. Yet, they don't consider that if we left it up to each person to define truth, it would be like permitting North to be any direction one points. Truth is absolute. It doesn't shift. Truth transcends time.

We may have had silence out of the vast majority of our bishops on abortion for the last 30+ years, and perhaps have never heard the word from most pulpits over the same time. I am full of much hope to see that over 115 bishops have spoken up to clarify Catholic teaching upon discovering distortions and they have been doing so with vigilance and zeal.

I'm willing to bet that this is going to change. No one will feel the pain more than our bishops who are responsible for teaching. The lack of catechesis couldn't be clearer.

We have to pray for our bishops and priests, as well as those who have gone astray, and those who don't get it - like, Barack Obama.

All Night Adoration Tonight - at Assumption Grotto

I have much to do today before I head over to Grotto. I am going to leave you with this, probably my last post before the vote. I may update with some edits so scroll down and look.

Please join us for the 7:00pm Mass tonight if you are unable to come during the night and watch with Our Lord for one hour. You are welcome to help us to watch with Our Lord anytime during the night. Please park between the school building and church so that the scope of ground to be covered by Grotto security is limited. Refreshments to help some long-watchers through the night will be available after 10:00pm in the back vestibule. Fr. Perrone has asked that we keep all refreshments out of the main church.

The overnight vigil will conclude just before the 6:30am Mass, which at Grotto is the Extraordinary Form. If you have never been to a "Tridentine" low Mass, here is your chance. It is largely silent. Booklets are usually available on the railing before Mass and if you look inside the back cover, there are notes for posture. Most likely you will need to follow posture for the low Mass.

Adoration will continue throughout the day until 6:30pm in the convent chapel, ending with Benediction. If you have never been to the convent chapel, please go to the convent, which is in the yard adjacent to the school. Ring the bell and tell the sisters you would like to gain entry to the chapel and they will guide you in the first time.

Keep in mind, that the Assumption Grotto Cemetery is the final resting place of many aborted babies, including those buried this past summer by Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.

Map for Assumption Grotto in Detroit

In her local and national hour on Ave Maria Radio, Teresa Tomeo was naming some places locally here in metro Detroit where you can catch Adoration, including Assumption Grotto. I had made the request that they list such events because people are undoubtedly looking for some place to pray for a miracle, this election. Go to the archives page for Teresa Tomeo, here for November 3 and you can listen to it. I hope to later - she had some really good guests on both hours.

Michigan Pro-Life Endorsements

The Michigan Right to Life has made it easy for voters to print out a list of endorsements for your area in Michigan. Simply click this link and put your street name (not the numbers, just the name) and other info and it will show you which district you are in and who you can vote for to support life. If a candidate isn't listed or if it says, "no endorsement", it means they are not pro-life.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Real Catholic TV featured in the Detroit Free Press

Ferndale-based, Real Catholic TV - a new Catholic internet "station" is seen globally. It has daily items that are free, such as the weekday Catholic news segment hosted by Vic Faust, and the daily commentary by Michael Voris. There is also a video short of the "Saint o the Day" and a brief historical note about the date.

It doesn't stop there, Real Catholic TV has unique programming for just $10 monthly. Real TV has, "The View". Real Catholic TV has, "The Other View".

Balling his right hand into a fist, producer Michael Voris leans into a TV camera inside a Ferndale studio to slam home his point:

Why do young adults stay from mass in droves?" Voris asked while delivering a taped commentary. "What's missing is bold preaching that challenges young adults. ... The beauty and truth of the Catholic faith has been denied this generation by an older generation ... of hedonistic, immoral egomaniacs with no moral compass."

Strong words, but ones that the producers of a new Catholic TV station -- billed as the first one to air solely online -- hope will connect with an audience they say is starved for fresh religious programming with an edge. Called Real Catholic TV, the new station is based in Ferndale and aims to reach a global audience with news, features and commentary that pushes a decidedly traditional viewpoint.

There already are religious media outlets aimed at southeastern Michigan's 1.5 million Catholics -- a couple of radio stations and a TV station produced with the cooperation of the Archdiocese of Detroit -- but Real Catholic TV says it will fill a void because of its independence.

Launched last month, the station comes at a time of intense debate within the Catholic church about how to stem the growing numbers leaving the faith. A major survey by the Pew Forum released earlier this year found that one of every three Americans who were raised Catholic have left the church.

That has concerned many Catholics, but there are disagreements about how to best stem that loss and attract newcomers to the faith. To some, the problem is that the church may be too rigid on certain issues: contraception, divorce, abortion, male-only priests.

But Voris -- a veteran TV reporter who's the main producer behind Real Catholic TV -- believes the opposite is true. To conservatives like him, the church has been watered down over the past 40 years by liberal reforms that started with Vatican II. And it lacks, he says, dynamic teachers who preach the faith with passion.

"People respond to the truth, not pablum," Voris said, banging his pencil on the desk. "And for decades, that's all young adults have been given.

"They've been fed gallons of innocuous, ethereal, kumbaya, arts-and-craft making, God is a rainbow, let's-hold-hands spiritually vacuous nonsense. "Don't believe me? Start counting young adults at mass the next time you're there."

Another point of contention is presentation: compared to the showmanship of some Protestant TV preachers and megachurches -- which have soared in popularity in recent years -- Catholic services and clerics can come off to some as too dowdy or reserved. In a media-saturated world of video games and YouTube clips, Sunday mass just doesn't cut it anymore.

"Why on earth are they going to listen to Father-Bore-You-to-Death prattle on?" Voris said.

And so the 47-year-old Ferndale man is trying to attract those looking for vigor in their message.

But some local Catholics view Voris as a renegade unwilling to work within the system: The archdiocese has not endorsed his new station, nor a TV program Voris started in 2006, "The One True Faith."

Usually, there's a protocol that media outlets calling themselves Catholic go through to make sure their teachings are accurate, said Ned McGrath, a spokesman for the diocese. Voris and Real Catholic TV have not done that.

Still, Real Catholic TV has its fans.

"Finally, something that excites me," said Kevin Karwowicz, 38, of Macomb Township. "People want that firmness. ... It's good to hear positive people talking with leadership qualities."

Karwowicz grew up in the Catholic church and went to a Catholic high school, "but I felt like the archdiocese just kind of lost touch."

A couple of years ago, Karwowicz attended Kensington Community Church, an evangelical nondenominational megachurch in Troy known for its multimedia presentations on large video screens, coffee bar and athletic swagger that has drawn ethnic Catholics from across the region looking for a change.

He said he was bored by the routine of the Catholic liturgy.

"It's come in, stand up, sit down, receive communion, put money in the basket and come home," Karwowicz said. In the end, he came back to the Catholic Church, bouncing between parishes to hear priests he feels "get it."

Career change for Voris
A graduate of Notre Dame, Voris was a TV reporter for two decades, working as a national political correspondent during the 1984 presidential race.

He moved in 1990 to Detroit, where he worked for the local CBS and Fox affiliates, earning a few Emmys for his work. But over the years, Voris says he became increasingly disenchanted with what he saw as the mainstream media's immoral values.

The breaking point came when he was once asked to do a story about Madonna's bra.

"To do a meaningful story that spoke to the soul became more and more difficult," he said.

And Voris was fed up with his own un-Catholic behavior.

"I had essentially led an empty life," said the never-married man.

A couple of deaths in the family -- his brother suddenly of heart failure in 2003 and his mother of stomach cancer in 2004 -- added to his spiritual turmoil.

And so in 2006, he established St. Michael's Media and established the Ferndale studio, where a sword of St. Michael sits in a holder as a prop.

He produced some TV programs for cable stations, but seeing the future was on the Internet, started work on Real Catholic TV earlier this year. Financial help came from Marc Brammer of South Bend, Ind., a director at Moody's Corp.

Daily devotional
Every morning, the producers and editors at Real Catholic TV gather for Catholic prayers in a makeshift chapel tucked in a corner of the studio.

Putting in long hours, they shoot and produce several programs, including a daily Catholic news report by WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) sports reporter Vic Faust, a short daily clip dubbed "Today's Saint," and a women's show called "The Other View" that's loosely based on the morning talk show, "The View."

"I never hear my Catholic viewpoint coming across, especially in the area of abortion," said the women show's producer, Susan Vance. "All I ever hear is pro-choice this, pro-choice that, especially with the stars and the TV show people, and the gay agenda.

"We want to show our Catholic view."

On the first show, the five women railed against Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, liberals and media bias.

Voris has his share of critics -- he said he's been called a "Catholic jihadist" -- but argues his show is needed more than ever.

"There's some timeless, ageless truths" in Catholicism, Voris says. "But the church has done a pretty poor job ... of making people understand why religion is relevant to them."

The archdiocese disagrees, saying that it and other parts of the church have long understood "the influence and power of television, radio and Internet-based media outlets in spreading the gospel," spokesman McGrath said.

Tom Peters is moving into video work now. This format is going to increase in popularity and it is a really great opportunity to see the bishops up close and personal in these kinds of interviews. It puts a face on those black and white words we see in their documents and books. Good job, Tom!

Obama vs Jobs

I can't set aside "life" issues. The old, "I'm personally opposed, but" argument doesn't wash. Think about it. I'm sure there were people personally opposed to all kinds of things, but turned a blind eye to them, like slavery, segregation and the "extermination" of disabled people, and people of certain ethnicities, or religions during the Holocaust years. People could use the "personally opposed, but" argument to absolve themselves of protesting most anything, including pedophilia, sex between minors, stealing, and.....you name it.

However, above and beyond that, I want to explain why else I could not vote for Obama. But wait, someone has already done it for me, quite well. It's jobs!

Video: Catholic Election News and Commentary from Real Catholic TV

This is from Friday, but it is very good. Watch these two videos out of Real Catholic TV, which is based in metro Detroit. Vic Faust has a great newscast (as always), and in the second video, Michael Voris talks about the need for prayer for this election, using the Battle of Lepanto as an example. Michael explains the similarities of 1571 and how the Christians who were outnumbered, won in the end.

A Must Read for Catholics: A Bishop's Humble Admission about Fear and Courage

More than 115 US bishops issued statements or written articles clarifying Catholic teaching since it was so grossly misrepresented by Catholic Democrats, Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden on national television. The bishops have gotten fired up in this election cycle and as I have said before, they are not playing partisan politics. Rather, they have been dragged into the frey when Catholic pols and other Catholic public figures like Doug Kmiec have so distorted Catholic teaching so as to lead others into scandal. Several Catholic Democratic politicians and other Catholic public figures who support Obama have continued to use these perversions of the faith to get votes.

One of the most humbling and profound things I've read out of the many US bishops who have spoken up has been this recent article by Bishop Robert Vasa of Oregon. Keep in mind that euthanasia is legal in Oregon. His words should have us all thinking about the kinds of fears that motivate us - fears of speaking up for the common good, and for truth. What kinds of fears motivate us to vote our pocket book ahead of life or make us indifferent to the plight of a class of people?

First he calls to our attention some things from the Old Testament. Then he shifts to a reflection that is well worth pondering. Emphasis is mine in bold with added emphasis in blue-bold; comments in red.

BEND — Note that Eleazar has no illusion about the practical value of his fidelity. It would not cause the king to change the law, it would not cause his friends to convert, it would not result in a miraculous intervention by God. In worldly terms, his death is useless, his resistance futile. Yet, Eleazar states the hope implicit in his willingness to die: “I will prove myself worthy of my old age and I will leave to the young a noble example of how to die willingly and generously for the revered and holy laws.” This is what it means to be a witness, a martyr. It means leaving a noble example for the encouragement, the emboldening of one’s successors.

Another example is found in the chapter immediately following the story of Eleazar. It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king to force them to eat pork in violation of God’s law. One of the brothers speaking for the others said, “What do you expect to achieve by questioning us we are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors.” Then follows a description of a whole series of the most horrendous tortures which these brothers endured. All the while the mother watched and encouraged her sons. The Scriptures then rightfully recognize the dignity of the mother: Most admirable and worthy of everlasting remembrance was the mother who saw her seven sons perish in a single day yet bore it courageously because of her hope in the Lord. Filled with a noble spirit that stirred her womanly heart with manly courage she exhorted each of them in the language of their forefathers. The mother was the last to die after all her sons. None of these family members was given a name. In purely secular terms we could come up with all kinds of reasons why the mother and her sons should have feigned eating pork in order to spare their lives. These seven sons could have been valuable resistance fighters. They could have raised up faithful sons and daughters to assure the survival of Israel. It could be argued that their faithfulness, which led to the destruction of the entire family, was an exercise in complete futility and even foolhardiness. Was their witness foolhardiness or was it courage?

These Old Testament examples manifested wonderful and exemplary courage. Saint Thomas positions the Cardinal Virtue of fortitude or courage between fear and daring. Courage, he says, curbs fear and moderates daring. We would be more inclined to say that courage stands between cowardice and foolhardiness. A secularist looking at martyrdom would, almost of necessity, conclude that the death is the result of foolhardiness. Such bold actions, in our current, “can’t we all just get along” mentality, will always be viewed as imprudent, politically incorrect, and misguided. Such a disdain for martyrdom and for holy boldness is nothing other than a disdain for faith; a disdain for a hope in the Lord. It is perhaps, also a symptom of the hopelessness of which Pope Benedict XVI speaks in, Spe Salvi. In the case of these Old Testament examples it is clear that each was confronted with a very definitive choice. None of us have ever been confronted with such a dramatic choice but for these Old Testament heroes it came down to this, “Your faith or your life.” In a positive sense, using Pope Benedict’s words, the question would be: “In what do you hope?” We are edified, in the best sense of that word, by the witness, the martyrdom, the courage of Eleazar and companions. We could cite many such examples from the early years of Christianity. Even in our own day, the numerous saints canonized by Pope John Paul II, many of them martyrs, is a testimony to the fact that faith-filled courage is not dead. It is a testimony that hope is not dead.

[Watch where this goes now and reflect inward on it] When I consider the courage of these Old Testament figures and the firm witness of other saints and martyrs I would honestly have to say of myself, “I am a coward!” There are many times when fear impedes me from acting with what could be called holy boldness. The nature of that fear which impedes is perhaps different for each of us but I hope that each of us acknowledges such fear, grapples with it and even occasionally overcomes it, at least for a time.

Unfortunately, for me, the nature of the perceived threat is so paltry that allowing it to impede correct acting can only be the result of profound cowardice. The most serious threat to my well being for acting with greater boldness has been an intimation that I will be rejected, hated, ridiculed, rendered ineffective, deprived of financial support, judged to be insensitive, misunderstood, or verbally vilified. [Wow!] In other words the threats, all things considered, are quite innocuous and yet these things generate within me a variety of fears and doubts and misgivings. At times they even paralyze me into a state of cowardly inaction. [While there are things here for any priest or bishop to reflect on, ponder for a moment those times that we didn't want to leave our comfort zone to talk to our friends and family about what was right and just. Such things don't have to be confrontational. How many times were we silent in the face of distortions or misunderstandings about the faith to avoid discomfort? False charity can sometimes lead us in this direction]

It might be the perception of some that the issuance of my 2004 document, Giving Testimony to the Truth was a courageous act. [This was a bold document in which he told lay people involved in various "ministries" that they should be of high moral character. As you can imagine, it drew some serious flack, as well as support]. Others would classify it as foolhardiness. [ahh....here we go....]This is the document which required that individuals serving in a variety of Diocesan Ministries must affirm some basic tenets of the Church in order to continue to serve. [God bless this bishop. Consider how people are led into scandal by people who are openly pro-abortion handing out Communion as EMHC's]. It is, however, very difficult for me to see how the simple fulfillment of the episcopal duty which I have to teach could be considered an act of courage. In that I would turn to the Gospel of Saint Luke, 17:10: “When you have done all you have been commanded to do, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” It is a rather sad commentary for our age that a simple fulfillment of duty is mistaken for a courageous act.

It might be a perception that my boldness regarding pro-abortion politicians is courageous but in truth I only follow the lead of those who exemplify a boldness far greater than my own. The bold speaking out on the part of Archbishop Raymond Burke regarding the contentious issue of Catholic pro-abortion politicians and Holy communion emboldens cowards like me to follow his example [Jesus chose more than one apostle and there are examples of where they embolden each other]. The firm and measured response of Cardinal Egan and a variety of other Archbishops and Bishops to misleading statements of the Speaker of the House emboldens others, like myself, to shake off the shackles of fear and to stand with them.

This is a point I have made about the bishops speaking up - it is catchy. Things really began to steamroll in this election when Archbishop Chaput of Denver didn't waste any time addressing the gross distortions of Catholic teaching presented on Meet the Press by Nancy Pelosi at the time of the Democratic National Convention. Several other bishops followed suit, and more joined in when Joe Biden went and did the same thing. Both of these politicians thumbed their noses at the bishops when they continued, after the public corrections, to distort Catholic teaching to crowds in an effort to get votes.

IT'S ALL ABOUT DYING TO SELF
We have to get out of our comfort zones if we are to follow Christ. We have to imitate His life. The Cross is something we should spend some time meditating upon. What does it teach us? We must die with Christ. Martyrdom is still seen in some places today, but the vast majority of us will need to work on dying to self. That is, chipping away at all that is displeasing to God. More often than not, there is great suffering in letting go of our sinful and unvirtuous attachments. Some of those attachments are subtle, such as being more concerned with what others think, than what God "thinks". We need to constantly evaluate whether we are following Christ by going with the flow, or going against the grain. As was pointed out to us today, the gate is narrow. This means, we cannot be liked by everyone and we should expect ridicule and misunderstandings.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Photopost: Feast of All Souls 2008 - Latin Novus Ordo - Black Vestments

Today, Assumption Grotto celebrated the Feast of All Souls. Normally, the 9:30am Mass is in the Extraordinary Form (Tridentine), but Fr. Perrone opted for the Ordinary Form in Latin. It was concelebrated by three priests of the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross.

Fr. Perrone gives the following explanation:

There are currently two calendars in use for the Roman rite: one for the new ("ordinary") form and one for the old ("extraordinary form" or Tridentine). Accoringly, today's celebration of All Souls Day must be observed on Sunday in the new rite, but in the Tridentine form All Souls Day is transferred to Monday. We are not celebrating the Tridentine form of the Latin Mass today only, so as to allow all our parishioners the opportunity to assist at a Mass for the Dead, an opportunity which they might not have if the designated Tridentine observance for today - the 4th Resumed Sunday after Ephiphany - were celebrated. Tomorrow, the Tridentine Masses wil be for All Souls Day. Next Sunday we will resume the Tridentine Sunday Mass, where the feast of The Dedication of the Archbasilica of Our Savior will be observed. We are sorry for the confusion that prevails when there are two calendars simultaneously in use, a circumstance that will be addressed and remedied by the Holy See in the future.

As you can see, black vestments were in use. If you are not accustomed to this, it may take you aback. However, suspend judgment for a moment and read the column of Bishop R. Walter Nickless of Sioux City, Iowa. He talks about black vestments and the connection to the dead. You might be surprised by what you learn about our Catholic faith. He provided the explanation because he chose this year to wear black himself. I'll send you to the blogpost by Fr. Z, who includes some comments of his own, where you can read what Bishop Nickless has to say.

The Grotto Knights of Columbus provided color guard.

Our pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone conducted a 37-piece orchestra. The Assumption Grotto Choir and Orchestra performed the Requiem by Maurice Durufle which was absolutely beautiful. Pre-Mass music was by Joseph-Ermend Bonnal, "Priere et Choral" for organ and orchestra (which he notes is the first performance in the USA). Below is a towards the back of the Church where the choir and orchestra is situated. You can see the organist, Matthew Simpson on the balcony, where he uses a mirror to see Fr. Perrone.

Photopost: Wine-tasting Fundraiser at Assumption Grotto

Assumption Grotto is a happening place. It seems there is hardly a week that goes by without something to go to. This was a worthy cause - a parish fundraiser.

Below is Giuseppe Pracilio of the California Wine Grapes Company with Fr. Eduard Perrone.

Those who purchased tickets were treated to an Italian dinner of pasta, sausage, and more. Music was provided by I.A.C.S. Coro Italiano - a Strolling - Dance Band founded by Luigi and Angela La Marra.

A demonstration on making wine the old-fashioned way was participated in by several of the children in attendance.

And....there were a few big kids getting into the action....

Fr. Perrone hit the "ivories" near the end and one man decided to tip the player. Within the minutes, greenbacks were hitting the cup en masse.

It took Fr. Perrone a few minutes to notice what was going on, but by the time he had, some bigger bills started to drop into the cup. At the end, he declared that all money donated into the cup, including the dimes, nickels and pennies, would go towards the parish fundraiser. Now we know how to get our pastor to play the keys.

Even the pastor's mother did some tipping of her own.

It was a very fun night. I'm sure it won't be Assumption Grotto's last wine-tasting fundraiser.

Upcoming.....awe-inspiring words from a few bishops

The bishops have been on fire!

People with decades of covering Church matters have made this admission: They've never seen bishops speak up the way they are ahead of this election. The web can't keep up with the statements flooding out of dioceses.

I have to head out for my monthly Carmelite meeting and may not get to post them until tomorrow afternoon, at which time there will probably be more. But, there are some that deserve careful attention.

Stay tuned and in the meanwhile, look at this impressive list:

Obama's Musical Middle Class

You may recall John McCain pressing Obama earlier in the campaign asking Obama to define what he meant by the middle class - with numbers. Well, Obama has, and it has been changing.

Is it 250,000, 200,000, 150,000, 120,000 or.......45,000? Watch this...

There is another video that goes all the way back to the Hilary-Obama debates that discusses the same tax issues raised in that race, now. I don't know if it is in this video, but in one of these debates with Hilary, he gave said that those making over 97,000 would see an increase. This video has some interesting info about what happens when you raise capital gains taxes which affects anyone with a 401k, or a pension. He wants to raise that from 15% to 28%. The stock market will not grow when people stop investing in it because they will have to pay more taxes. They will look for alternatives.

Hmmmmmm.....I wonder why the stock market has been swinging widely ahead of the election.
