Statement out of Diocese of Madison, WI on Ruth Kolpack - Q & A

The Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin is doing a good job of explaining as much as they can, about recent the recent dismissal lay pastoral associate, Ruth Kolpack, by Bishop Morlino.

In itself, the Q & A sheet, or FAQ, is catechetical, or instructional. It is lengthy, but well worth the read which will clarify some of the information that has been floating around.

Click the pick below and it will take you directly to the PDF at the diocesan webstie. It's a good read.

Canonist Ed Peters on Canons 915 & 916, and Abp's Burke & Wuerl

I just received a Canon Law update from Ed Peters, JD, JCD on Canons 915 and 916, and how two camps of bishops are looking at these, led by Archbishop Burke on one side and Archbishop Wuerl on the other. I have maintained two things:

    1) There is one Holy Spirit influencing the consciences of both men. In the end, what is important is what God wants and it's up to our bishops to discern that completely, through prayer and dialogue. We need to pray for them to properly discern and we will know it is done when there is unity.

    2) I choose to believe that inaction on Canon 915 by most bishops not acting on it, has everything to do with a fundamental problem with understanding, not with any kind of moral or virtuous lapse. This is a christian way to look at such disagreements.
I still think the men need to celebrate Mass together one day, then go lock themselves into a nice room with a coffee, Jameson, scotch, cigars and any other legitimate thing that might help them through some robust dialogue.

Ed's analysis is very charitably done and sheds light on something interesting. He looks at Canons 915 and Canon 916 together and suggests this is where differences abound.

I'll start you out here, then follow the link to Ed's blog - In Light of the Law - to read the rest of the post:

Abps. Wuerl (c. 916) & Burke (cc. 915-916) on admission to Communion I often tell my students, the answer to a canonical question is seldom found in a single canon.

Two prominent American prelates, Abp. Donald Wuerl of Washington DC and Abp. Raymond Burke of the Apostolic Signatura, are the lead figures in a significant disagreement over admitting certain pro-abortion Catholic politicians to holy Communion. Wuerl basically believes that, under Canon 916, Catholics, including pro-abortion politicians, should determine their own eligibility for reception of Communion. Burke argues that, beyond Canon 916, Canon 915 requires ministers of holy Communion to withhold the Eucharist from some pro-abortion politicians if they don't refrain from approaching on their own. Both sides can't be right, and I suspect that the more compelling case is made by reading the two canons together instead of reading one to the exclusion of the other.

Some preliminary thoughts toward sorting this out.

First, awareness of Church history helps contemporary Catholics sleep at night. This is not the first time that upright bishops have differed over important points of pastoral practice; for that matter, strong episcopal conflicts over (unsettled) matters of doctrine are not unknown in the Church. So, let's be confident in Holy Spirit's power to lead the Church through this issue as He has led us through others. Second, one must avoid "personalizing" the debate.

Both archbishops are distinguished thinkers and both have many decades of loyal service to the Church behind them, including some services rendered under very difficult circumstances. In short, each is an attractive figure. But, while it's tempting to rally behind one or the other, personalities are not what's at issue here.

Bishops applying Canon 915 to be backed by Washington and Arlington bishops?

Deal Hudson has offered some interesting thoughts on the matter of Canon 915 and traveling politicians. It sounds like Catholic politicians whose bishops have asked them not to receive Holy Communion, will be subject to that while in the Washington and Arlington dioceses. As Deal points out, this sets a precedent - one that may influence bishops in this area, if they know they will be backed.

From Lifesite News - Commentary: Closing Ranks on Canon 915: Bishops Confirm that Sebelius Should Not Receive Communion

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius received some good news last week when abortionist Dr. George Tiller was found not guilty of breaking state laws regulating late-term abortion. The relationship between Tiller and Sebelius would surely have played a role in her upcoming confirmation hearings had he been found guilty.

But Governor Sebelius got some bad news as well -- something not noticed much in Catholic media or the secular press. The bishops of Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia, confirmed publicly they would uphold the declaration of her ordinary, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, stating that Governor Sebelius should not present herself for communion.

A spokeswoman for the Washington Archdiocese, Susan Gibbs, said Archbishop Donald Wuerl would expect Sebelius to follow Bishop Naumann's request while in Washington. Joelle Santolla, spokeswoman for the Arlington Diocese, announced that Bishop Paul Loverde would expect the same while she was in Northern Virginia.

That Archbishop Wuerl and Bishop Loverde would back up Bishop Naumann in regard to the future Secretary of Health and Human Services is a significant development in the effort of some bishops to enforce Canon 915: "Those upon whom the penalty of excommunication or interdict has been imposed or declared, and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion."

This will send the message to other bishops that if they choose to pronounce members of Congress from their dioceses unfit for communion, their authority will be respected in D.C. and across the Potomac in Virginia. The ramifications are enormous: For example, if Sean Cardinal O'Malley of Boston stated publicly that Sen. John Kerry was in violation of Canon 915, he would not have been able to receive communion at Pope Benedict XVI's Mass in Washington, D.C., a year ago. Rep. Nancy Pelosi would not have been able to celebrate her elevation to speaker of the House with a special Mass at Trinity College, if Archbishop Neiderhauer had found her wanting according to the standard of Canon 915.

Some will argue that neither Archbishop Wuerl nor Bishop Loverde will attempt, through their priests, to deny Governor Sebelius communion. But this misses the point, and the significance, of how the combined statements of Bishops Naumann, Wuerl, and Loverde have created a new and more vulnerable situation for the pro-abortion Catholic members of Congress. As Archbishop Raymond Burke has explained, Bishop Naumann did not impose a "sanction" on Governor Sebelius; Bishop Naumann asked Sebelius, not the clergy, to apply Canon 915 to herself.

But if Sebelius were to receive communion in D.C. or Northern Virginia, it would likely generate a news story that would mushroom quickly, involving the priest who administered communion and his bishop. This is not news coverage that Sebelius, or the Obama administration, would want to deal with.

No doubt there are priests in both dioceses who would have little compunction about giving communion to pro-abortion Catholic politicians, but whether they want to get into a media-generated spat with their bishop over a high-profile politician is another matter.

A final point: Archbishop Wuerl and Bishop Loverde's collegial response to Bishop Naumann destabilizes the relationship between pro-abortion Catholic politicians and their bishops back home. The question will arise as to why Governor Sebelius should be the only politician in Washington who has been called to account under Canon 915. What about the dozens of others in Congress who have a 100 percent pro-abortion voting record? What about Vice-President Joe Biden himself?

Will other bishops seize this opportunity to apply Canon 915 to politicians in their dioceses, knowing that Archbishop Wuerl and Bishop Loverde will back them up? Given the determination of the Obama administration and the Congress to roll back all restrictions on abortion, I wouldn't be surprised.

Notre Dame Scandal: List of Bishops commenting as of March 30, 2009

There is an awful lot of interesting news out there, but I got home too late to cover it.

However, I would like to update the list of bishops who have spoken out on the Notre Dame Scandal:

Got more? Email me at TeDeumBlog@gmail.com, or drop them into the combox. Either way, most will likely be updated in the evenings.

I also think it is noteworthy, since we are on the topic of bishops speaking up, is the words of Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver during a workshop on debate and discourse. It is not about the Notre Dame scandal, but worthy reading I want to pass along since I don't have time to make a post on it. Go read: Archbp. Chaput’s workshop on debate and discourse at the blog of Fr. Z.

For other interesting news commentary, I recommend checking out some of the recent posts at American Papist and Father Z's blog. New Advent has also had some interesting pics from the blogosphere.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

I missed Leonardo Defilippis and ended up doing penance at a Mass with Children's Eucharistic prayers. Arghh!!!!

I had the camera bag packed last night and was looking forward to going to 9:30am EF Mass at Grotto, socializing after Mass and then hitting the one-man show by Leonardo Defilippis, on the Gospel of John. Let's just say that something unexpected derailed my plans this morning. Nuts! I was really looking forward to it too.

I ended up a local parish doing penance through a children's liturgy (I was clueless). It featured the infamous Eucharistic Prayer I in Masses for Children. Here is just a sampling of this mush which thankfully, is being dropped by the Holy See when the new Missal comes out! (emphases mine in bold).

Priest: On the night before he died, Jesus was having supper with his apostles. He took bread from the table. He gave you thanks and praise. Then he broke the bread, gave it to his friends, and said:

Take this, all of you, and eat it:
this is my body which will be given up for you.

When supper was ended, Jesus took the cup that was filled with wine. He thanked you, gave it to his friends, and said:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Then he said to them: do this in memory of me.

We do now what Jesus told us to do. We remember his death and resurrection and we offer you, Father, the bread that gives us life, and the cup that saves us. Jesus brings us to you; welcome us as you welcome him.

It's Sunday. It's not suppose to be penitential!!!

Now, in this setting it was not even appropriate to be using a children's liturgy. The USCCB states that use of this Eucharistic Prayer is only to be used in Masses where the participants are either exclusively children, or where they make up the vast majority of participants. That was hardly the case.

When may the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses with Children be used? Is it the decision of the priest celebrating the mass or are there guidelines for this?

Concerning Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children, I would refer you to number 4 of the 1974 decree of the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship, Postquam de Precibus:

"Use of a Eucharistic Prayer for Masses with Children is restricted to Masses that are celebrated with children alone or Masses at which the majority of the participants are children.

"A community of children means one so considered by the Directory for Masses with Children, that is, one consisting of children who have not yet reached the age referred to as preadolescence." [source]

Dissidents trying to make Catholicism into a "designer religion"

This past week I was interviewed by Doug Erickson of the Wisconsin State Journal on lay pastoral associate, Ruth Kolpack's firing by Bishop Morlino of Madison.

The article appeared on Friday, March 27th, and I'm just now getting around to posting on it.

I spoke for about 7-10 minutes with the reporter, who had been looking for reaction from other areas of the US when he found my post: Statement from Bishop Morlino to NCR on personnel matters after firing of pastoral associate.

I talked about dissidents in general, much along the lines of what I posted in: Commentary on Catholic dissidence and Bishop Morlino on obedience.

He excerpted one line found at the end of my post on Kolpack's firing, and used one quote from the phone interview. Let's have a look (emphases mine in bold; comments in red):

Martyr or heretic? Bishop Morlino fires church employee over her beliefs
By DOUG ERICKSON

As a girl, Ruth Kolpack said she so loved her Catholic faith she played church with her friends during recess at a parochial school.

Often, she was a member of the congregation. Occasionally, she pretended to be an altar server, a role not available to girls at the time.

Now 64, Kolpack is still grappling with the role of women in the Catholic Church, although the circumstances are much more serious than a playground game.

On March 12, Madison Catholic Bishop Robert Morlino fired Kolpack from her position as the full-time pastoral associate at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Beloit. The termination came after Kolpack said she refused the bishop’s request to renounce [recant] a 2003 college thesis in which she argued for more gender-inclusive language at Masses and harshly criticized the Catholic hierarchy’s doctrine of only ordaining males. [one thing I like to point out is that Jesus was very politically incorrect for his day (eating with tax-collectors, healing on the Sabath, etc.). He could have chose women to be among the apostles, but he did not. Since Jesus is God, and God is all-knowing, he knew that someday there would be controversy created by women who wanted to be priests and could have chosen a woman - such as his own mother! But, he did not. I believe that folks who argue for women's ordination have a vague understanding of the divinity of Christ. And, dissenting on male-only ordinations usually does not come in isolation. It is paired with things that they want changed. They think that things are the way they are in the Church because men just don't understand. As a female liberated from liberal feminists, I can tell you that this is utter nonsense]

Her firing has angered parishioners at St. Thomas and set off a national debate on Catholic blogs as to whether Kolpack is a martyr or a heretic. [If the parishioners are like the vast majority of Catholics, they are not catechized well enough to understand why it is a problem for someone who does not have the mind of the Church, teaching children and others, like people converting. Of course it looks cruel to them, but the Bishop has to be concerned more with people's salvation, including those being taught by Ms. Kolpack, moreso than their self-esteem].

The situation again casts Morlino as the heavy [?] in a controversial personnel decision. [isn't it always labeled as controversial when it involves a bishop or priest who is faithful to the mission of the Church rather than the issue du jour?] Last summer, the music director at a Verona church was fired after five parishioners brought concerns to the bishop’s office about the director being openly gay [see Fr. Z's excellent post on this issue].

Morlino declined an interview request Thursday. Diocesan spokesman Brent King said because Kolpack’s situation is a personnel issue, details cannot be discussed, including whether she was fired for her thesis or for the presentation of or denial of any specific church teaching.

But King said the bishop needs to have confidence that priests and lay people are teaching church doctrine faithfully. “It can be inferred,” King wrote in an e-mail message regarding Kolpack, “that this is no longer the case, and she was let go.”

A 35-year history [of sadly not being corrected along the way - which, in itself is not charitable]

Kolpack has been a member of St. Thomas since 1974 and an employee the last 26 years, rising to pastoral associate in 1995. In that position, she performed many of the duties of a priest for the 325 households in the congregation.

“She did everything but celebrate Mass,” said church trustee Macy Kunz, who is “shocked and angry” by Kolpack’s firing.

In 1997, Kolpack began work on a master’s of divinity degree at St. Francis Seminary, a Catholic institution in suburban Milwaukee where, at the time, lay women were able to study alongside male seminarians [that was part of the problem], although they could not be ordained. [You have to wonder just what kind of Catholic institution of learning it is that permitted such strange teachings to pass muster. What were they grading on - vocabulary or content? The thesis can be found here]

She did not think her thesis views risky at the time [times are a changin', thankfully] — Morlino had not yet arrived in Madison — although she admits now that her use of the term “religious evil” in reference to male-only ordination was “very strong.” [perhaps she should re-think that and change the "s" with a "w" in that last word]

Kolpack said she believes women can be called by God to priesthood, but she said it’s a personal belief that she has not pursued publicly other than signing one online petition. “If I’m an activist in any way, it’s for equality,” she said. “We are all created in God’s image. Nobody is less, nobody is more.” [this completely flies in the face of the dignity of women. Women are not men and men are not women. God created us to compliment one another, not compete. Women are equal with men, in a complimentary way, and vice versa. Mulieris Dignitatem by Pope John Paul II would be great reading for anyone wanting to know what the Church teaches on the dignity of women]

Kolpack had never had a conversation with Morlino prior to being called to his residence March 12. In a 10-minute meeting, she said he asked her to profess her faith, take a loyalty oath and renounce [recant] her thesis. She was willing to do only the first two. [One would think that when standing before a man with a doctorate in moral theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, she would make an act of humility and give careful attention to what she might learn from him!]

She was stunned by her firing, although storm clouds had been brewing. [I think we will be seeing more of this around the country as bishops work to bring things back under control after decades of loop-hole theology and fuzzy philosophy. These bishops blew the dust off of Thomas Aquinas, along with the other Doctors, and Fathers of the Church.]

In December, anonymous people distributed flyers outside St. Patrick Catholic Church in Madison alerting parishioners to a “scandal” at St. Thomas. Those who have seen the flyer say it mentioned Kolpack’s support of President Barack Obama and suggested that since Obama supports abortion rights, Kolpack could not be trusted around children.

Kolpack, who gave $320 to Obama’s campaign last year, said she opposes abortion. [Would it have been proper for a Catholic to give $320 to David Duke even though they oppose racism?]

Separately, a former parishioner brought concerns to the bishop, said Kolpack, who will not disclose the nature of those concerns but said they grew out of a misrepresentation of something she said in a private conversation.

In January, Kolpack said the Rev. Steven Kortendick, pastor of both St. Thomas and St. Jude parishes in Beloit, told her the bishop asked him to fire her but he would not do so. Kortendick did not respond to messages. [If this is true, how sad that a bishop had to do the pastor's job.]

Parish ‘in an uproar’

News of Kolpack’s firing stunned St. Thomas parishioners, said Tom Lang, a member of the parish council who has known Kolpack for 35 years. “Never have I heard anything unusual from her about Catholic doctrine,” he said. “She’s really the heart and soul of this parish. It’s devastating she’d be fired.” [and if she had humbly told the bishop she was prepared to learn and understand where she was out of sync with the Church, rather than stick to her guns, she might very well have still had that job.]

Member Bill Cunningham said “at least 99 percent of the congregation” wants her back. His wife, Jo, said the “entire parish is in an uproar.”

Online petitions call for Kolpack’s reinstatement, but she has taken a drubbing on Web sites of Catholics who are loyal to church teachings. Morlino is a hero to them.

“Pray for our bishops! May they take back the church in America from the grips of dissidents,” wrote Diane Korzeniewski of Detroit, who tracks the work of bishops on her Web site, Te Deum laudamus.

In an interview, Korzeniewski said she’s thrilled with Morlino’s backbone. “We have a problem in the U.S. where some people basically want to create a designer religion out of Catholicism,” she said. [By designer religion, I meant that each person gets to make Catholicism into what conforms to their liking. The world, and many poorly catechized Catholics accept the relativistic view that the Church is like Burger King where you get to have it your way. I also told Erickson, that in all charity, we need to pray for Ruth Kolpack. Truly, may God enlighten her understanding in light of authentic Church teaching. I wish she would go back to him with a willingness to learn. She might be awestruck with the beauty of our faith, as it has been handed down.]

The Web site Catholic Culture likened Kolpack’s thesis to “the first term paper attempted by a not-too-bright college freshman.” [That was Diogenes, in the post: Madison Hatter]

Closer to home, Travis Ganser, a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Monona, said he “wholly supported what (Morlino) had to do to maintain clarity” in church teaching.

“I’ve listened to the bishop a lot,” Ganser said. “He makes his case based on reason and says, ‘Show me where I’m wrong.’ A lot of times, people can’t, so they resort to name-calling and demonizing him, when actually he’s a wonderful person.” [yep, this is what happens alright, or they talk about how their feelings were hurt.]

Morlino has agreed to meet with parishioners April 3. Members hope to get Kolpack’s job back but aren’t optimistic. [Hopefully, they do what is right, which is to receive him with humility and listen to him. More likely than not, they will go with intent to tell him a thing or two. If anyone has info on this meeting when it takes place, email me at TeDeumBlog@gmail.com].

“I feel sad and without power,” said member Cecilia Ramirez. She says her 12-year-old son doesn’t want to go to church anymore because he “doesn’t understand why God is doing this to Ruth.” [Well, you might explain to your child that Ruth did this to herself.]

Kolpack continues to worship at St. Thomas and has encouraged others not to leave. The church is its people, she tells others, and the bishop is just one member like everyone else. [Well, there you have it. If you believe the local bishop is on equal footing with Bubba sitting in the pew, then that explains the root of the problem]

A new website enables supporters of the Bishop to express it: SupportBishopMorlino.com

Detroit Free Press: Catholic youth choirs get acquainted with Latin

From the Detroit Free Press:

Catholic youth choirs get acquainted with Latin

BY NIRAJ WARIKOO • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • March 28, 2009

The classical sounds of the Latin language are to echo inside a Detroit cathedral today as children from across the region gather for a special mass featuring area Catholic youth choirs.

It's a sign of the growing interest in the Latin language among Catholics who are yearning for tradition.

About 100 children from parishes in Michigan and London, Ontario, are to practice and then perform during the mass with Archbishop Allen Vigneron at Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the seat of the Archdiocese of Detroit.

After the reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, greater emphasis was placed on using English in masses so singing in Latin increasingly fell out of favor, said local Catholics.

"When I was young, we only sang in Latin," recalled Cindy Stempin, music director at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Livonia.

"Latin was the universal language of the church," she added. "They are going back to their roots."

Some of her students say they like it.

"It's pretty cool to be singing in a different language," said Alexa Orosz, a sixth-grader at St. Michael school. "When you get used to it, it's not hard at all."

Stempin helped about 25 children in third grade to eighth grade get ready for today's concert, which is organized by the American Federation Pueri Cantores, a national organization that promotes religious music among youngsters.

The children are to rehearse today under the direction of Paul French, a noted composer and conductor who directs William Ferris Chorale in Chicago.

Nancy Deacon, director of music at the cathedral, remembers hearing Latin sung as an elementary school student, and then noticed the changes after the reforms.

"It went from one extreme to the other," she said. Singing in Latin is "something that had been missing for a generation or so."

Thanks Ruth K!

Notre Dame Scandal: Al Kresta to Students - Take Obama to a New Paygrade

I'm listening right now to the March 25, 2009 segment of Kresta in the Afternoon in which he spoke on the Notre Dame scandal and asked listeners what students out to do.

Click that first link above and just listen as you go about your work. It's a great discussion.

In his opening statement, Al Kresta said the following:

Nothing would better settle the question about Notre Dame’s value as a Catholic witness to the Kingdom of God than for its graduating students to greet this year’s commencement speaker, President Obama , with a vivid sign of Christian faith, hope, love, and courage. During his address, each graduate should cover his or her face with a two foot by two foot photo of either an aborted child or a beautiful Leonard Nilsson photo of an in utero human.

The President prizes learning and a lesson of this sort should delight him. It would place him in a new “pay grade.” Think of it: an auditorium of courageous and robust young men and women, willing to set themselves apart from the apathy of bourgeois society in order to confront the culture of American violence, all gathered under the patronage of a Woman and out of respect for the office of the Presidency. Isn’t this the type of coming generation President Obama hopes to cultivate?

For these Notre Dame students, the time to choose between Christ and Caesar has come. Even if the moment has eluded Notre Dame’s president, Fr. John Jenkins, Bishop D’Arcy, in whose diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, the University of Notre Dame resides, has already decided that this is a time for choice and a time for action. For the first time in 25 years, he will not attend the graduation. “I wish no disrespect to our president. I have always revered the Office of the Presidency. But a bishop must teach the Catholic Faith ‘in season and out of season’ and he teaches by not only by his words – but by his actions.”

While this is a painful decision for the Bishop, it is not unclear. I have in mind also the statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops in 2004. “The Catholic Community and Catholic Institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors, or platforms which would suggest support for their actions. Indeed the measure of any Catholic institutions is not only what it stands for, but also what it will not stand for.”

President Obama during his campaign made it clear that he supported the Freedom of Choice Act, which, had it been passed, would have swept away all state restrictions on abortion. As Bishop D’Arcy succinctly described in referring to the President’s decision to approve Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research which destroys human embryos: “It was just a few weeks ago that President Obama has recently reaffirmed and has now placed in public policy, his long-stated unwillingness to hold human life as sacred. While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life.”

The New Testament distinguishes between two different types of time, “chronos” and “kairos”. “Chronos” refers to time as duration. Heaven knows, these graduating students have put in their time at Notre Dame. Their chronos is coming to an end. “Kairos”, however, refers to time as the pregnant moment, the time of crisis and decision, the instant when time seems to stand still and one realizes that this particular choice will determine his or her future direction and character.

Notre Dame’s graduating class of 2009 can settle for a routine college commencement ceremony sprinkled with a little glitz of American civil religion or they can turn the moment into an international testimony to the dignity of the human person. They can proclaim “The Gospel of Life” and broadcast to the watching world that when it comes to protecting the weak and vulnerable, God doesn’t grade on the curve. Presidents and janitors, football players and grad assistants, priests and prostitutes are all judged by the same unwavering standard: “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Is anyone surprised that the butcher of Kansas, late term abortionist, George Tiller, would get away with his criminal activities?

We have state-protected infanticide people. Wake up!

Continuing discussion on Catholic dissidence, Archbishop Burke and Randall Terry

In my post, Archbishop Burke was duped by Randall Terry on purpose of interivew, a comment was dropped in by Stan Williams, PhD, and we are engaged in a little friendly blog-debate about the issue. I think it's a good dialogue and worth pulling out, because it highlights that solid, loyal Catholics can disagree on some things and maintain charity. I also do this here so I can add links and because my response is too long for the combox.

Before continuing, you might want to see that original post of mine in the opening link to get context - with comments, then drop into a post Stan made at Crossing Nineveh, to get his feedback: Archbishop Burke Chastises Randall Terry

DEAR STAN:

Point well taken about St. Paul. To go along with your examples, I would say that some of the Church Fathers got into people's faces to defend the faith, as well. Honestly, this does give me pause at times, so I will continue to reflect on it.

A bishop wants to isolate the sick lamb so that the sickness does not spread to others. If he goes nuclear on the sick lamb, he scatters the flock in such a way as to lose more sheep than if he had used a less nuclear approach. I think this is often a bishop's dilemma. He wants to correct the situation, but bring along as many of the lambs as possible. I think mistakes have been made and false-charity crept in. However, as a body, I think they are learning.

There is a new generation of bishops, better formed, who have the mind of the Church. This itself will bring about interesting growth within the USCCB and I look forward to what they will bring us years down the road when their numbers increase. The focus has seemed to be on the individual dissenter and their self-esteem. That focus is now shifting in a big way towards the scandalization of other Catholics (the illness spreading from one sheep to many).

I see a boldness growing in the body of bishops that is promising, but we didn't get here overnight and it won't change overnight. One thing I learned from the writings of W. Edwards Deming years ago, was that sweeping change isn't nearly as effective as incremental change. God is a great engineer and if we look back in history, we will see that He works in decades and centuries, not days, weeks, or months.

Let's get back to that combox dialogue

First, in response to your second comment in the link at top...

I think we may agree on the following points:

1) People - including priests and bishops have been engaged in a kind of false charity, whereby admonishent, correction, discpline, etc, is avoided on the basis that it might hurt someone's feeling or their self esteem. You and I probably agree that priests and bishops need to be concerned more with the salvation of those under their care, moreso than their self esteem.

2) There are dissidents, such as the priest you mention, who will try to justify things which are foreign to our faith. When such people given a platform at a parish, diocese, Catholic university, or Catholic newspaper, many people are led into scandal, most especialy today with the uncatechized and ill-catechized. Equally damaging is when things are being advanced by these people which clearly fly in the face of clear and constant teachings of the Church, and are met only with silence by priests and bishops.

3) I agree that the more than 30,000 Protestant denominations stemmed from someone disagreeing with the Catholic Church hundreds of years ago and starting their own thing. It all started with that first "protest", and multiplied exponentially as others split away, many from the first, second and third generation protestant denominations.

4) Going back to Canon 915 as mentioned in your first comment, we both agree that Canon 915 ought to be applied. I would go a step further and would suggest that there are cases that warrant a pronouncement of excommunication, when someone rejects dogma/doctrine and is obstinately leading others into scandal despite adequate pastoral intervention by their pastor and bishop.

Second: I struggle with your argument in the following ways:

1) If I see a child stealing a loaf of bread, I can judge his actions and call it stealing. This is not being judgmental, but simply stating a fact. But, I would fall into rash judgment if I said that the child's motivation was purely due to greed. Perhaps he stole the bread because he is living on the street and has not had anything to eat. It would still be wrong, but God has the authority to mitigate such things, which is why judgment of such things is left to him.

I feel the same way when looking at the actions (or inactions) of otherwise orthodox bishops (we will suspend discussion of dissident bishops in this post), who have not been more proactive in using Canon 915, public statements and other disciplinary actions. I can certainly make an observation that a particular action has not taken place, but I cannot judge the motivation of any bishop, attributing inaction to cowardice. Could this be a factor for some? It's possible. But, I don't know that. I can't know that. I leave that to God because He knows their heart.

2) On dealing with dissidents, I have already stated where we agree and perhaps this is just an expansion of that. Dissidents ought to be dealt with and not pampered where they lead many others into scandal. If you look through the examples below, you will see that while I don't agree with certain tactics, I don't believe in bishops sitting back making like a wall-flower while the wolves carry the sheep away. It's a matter of how it is dealt with. Each of these actions taken by bishops has undoubtedly been labeled as "uncharitable" by those on the other side of the issue, and perhaps a few bystanders who don't really know any better:

I have been a proponent of the approach taken by Bishop Martino in Scranton in his handling of Misericordia Univeristy, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and with Senator Robert Casey. Some would say he is being mean and hurting people's feelings. I say, it's a bishop doing his job. I have supported Bishop Morlino's recent firing of a lay pastoral associate. I know there are people in Madison, Wisconsin who think the bishop is being uncharitable. What they don't understand is that he is showing the greatest charity to those who would be subjected to "strange teachings". And, I liked the approach taken by Bishop Allen Vigneron, while still in Oakland when faced with an unexpected survey on priestly celibacy by the dissident group, Call to Action (after the fact). Note how carefully Vigneron walks the line of charity, balanced with firm clarity on Church teaching (and made it public as promptly as he could). In one last example, I highly support the approach taken by Bishop Jamie Soto, then co-adjutor of Sacramento, who accepted an invitation to be the keynote speaker at a parish-sponsored homosexual event, only to use it for a teaching moment.

I do not consider these "in your face" or uncharitable. Rather, they are firmly, and with great charity, teaching the faith and upholding it, without blinking.

3) With regards to the 30,000+ protestant denominations stemming from bishops not standing up for the faith, I would ask how many priests and bishops were martyred during the reformation? I like history now, but for whatever reason, didn't much pay attention in my school years, unfortunately.

4) With Canon 915, let me put it this way: I won't assume cowardice on the part of any bishop for reasons stated above - it crosses the line into judging their motivation which my conscience tells me is wrong. They are, for the most part, united in that pro-choice Catholic pols should not present themselves for Communion. Where they are divided is on just how to apply Canon 915. All of the calls, emails, letters and protests will not change a bishop's mind, if in his conscience he feels he understands Canon 915 and has come to a different conclusion than another bishop. Make no mistake: There is one Holy Spirit acting on the consciences of all bishops. Hence, I believe that there cannot be varied interpretations of such a thing. Jabs, potshots, and not-talking will not get them closer to what God wants. They must pray and continue to work together. We must pray with them.

RANDALL TERRY
As for Randall Terry, I stand by my original post. I found it highly unusual for a Vatican official to authorize such a video-event in the manner presented by Mr. Terry. Something seemed "off" and my senses were right. I was suspicious of it initially and said nothing, holding my breath hoping it wouldn't implode. Not long ago - as a prelude to Terry's press conference, when we heard that Vatican officials were "entertaining the removal" of certain archbishops, the alarm bells went off. I believe damage was done by this stunt. Where rich, fraternal dialogue should be taking place, a wall has just gone up, thanks to Randall's "clever" trick on Archbishop Burke. The ends do not justify the means. I still say it was an injustice not only to Burke, but to Wuerl, Loverde and others who came under the spotlight through certain questions. I wondered if that dig went right over Abp Burke's head.

ABP BURKE, ABP WUERL and CANON 915
It is my hope that Archbishops Raymond Burke, Donald Wuerl and others would meet - privately, spend some time in prayer together, and then discuss Canon 915 over some coffee, Jameson, scotch, cigars and anything else that might help. Perhaps they could set up a chimney and puff some of that stogie smoke outside to let the rest of us know, we have unity on Canon 915.

Truly people, if you want to help the bishops, turn to prayer. Go to adoration on their behalf; pray Rosaries for them, offer up your Mass intentions and daily sacrifices. The graces will come to them. Recall that Our Lord pointed out some demons can only be taken out with prayer.

USCCB addresses Reiki: Not Compatible with Christianity

Whoa! Who knew this was coming???

I have not read this in full yet. My own ordinary, Archbishop Allen Vigneron is one of the signing members (though he is listed as the bishop of Oakland, and probably still was when this was drafted). It was released on March 25, 2009.

I am going to read the entire document when I find time and encourage you to do the same. This is LONG overdue and there are a few other new age practices that have crept into Catholic hospitals and retreat centers that we ought to pray get addressed by the USCCB or Vatican.

If you want some background and commentary, Tom McFeely has a blogpost up at the National Catholic Register: Enough with Reiki Retreats

Let's cut to the chase:

III. CONCLUSION
10. Reiki therapy finds no support either in the findings of natural science or in Christian belief. For a Catholic to believe in Reiki therapy presents insoluble problems. In terms of caring for one's physical health or the physical health of others, to employ a technique that has no scientific support (or even plausibility) is generally not prudent.

11. In terms of caring for one's spiritual health, there are important dangers. To use Reiki one would have to accept at least in an implicit way central elements of the worldview that dergirds Reiki theory, elements that belong neither to Christian faith nor to natural science. Without justification either from Christian faith or natural science, however, a Catholic who puts his or her trust in Reiki would be operating in the realm of superstition, the no-man's-land that is neither faith nor science.9 Superstition corrupts one's worship of God by turning one's religious feeling and practice in a false direction.10 While sometimes people fall into superstition through ignorance, it is the responsibility of all who teach in the name of the Church to eliminate such ignorance as much as possible.

12. Since Reiki therapy is not compatible with either Christian teaching or scientific evidence, it would be inappropriate for Catholic institutions, such as Catholic health care facilities and retreat centers, or persons representing the Church, such as Catholic chaplains, to promote or to provide support for Reiki therapy.

Archbishop Burke was duped by Randall Terry on purpose of interivew...

***Post Updated***

Oh, boy. This is interesting in many ways...

It surprised me that with all of the professional media outlets and worthy pro-life groups, Archbishop Burke would allow such an interview with Mr. Terry. Now we get the much needed clarification. It was a classic case of exploitation.

According to His Excellency, Randall Terry misled him as to how the videotape would be used. In it, the archbishop discussed Canon 915. The archbishop is dismayed with how it is being used to attack his fellow bishops.

Archbishop Burke does not criticize specific bishops in the interview, but in one question - which was somewhat awkwardly asked, Mr. Terry takes a jab at a few archbishops, naming their location and referring to their not denying Holy Communion ahead of the election. In watching the actual video of the interview (which has been added to my original post), I'm wondering if Archbishop Burke caught the jab made by Terry in the question.

Setting aside that question, if you listen to Burke's response it stands well on it's own, not as a criticism of other bishops, but as an invitation for everyone to look closer at Canon 915.

The Archbishop has released this statement:

ROME, Italy - In response to the March 25, 2009 press conference of Mr. Randall Terry in Washington, D.C., the Most Reverend Raymond L. Burke, Archbishop Emeritus of Saint Louis and Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, issued the following statement:

“Recently, Mr. Randall Terry and some of his associates visited me in Rome and asked to videotape an interview with me to share with pro-life workers for the purpose of their encouragement. The interview was conducted on March 2, 2009.

“Sadly, Mr. Terry has used the videotape for another purpose which I find most objectionable.

“First, Mr. Terry issued a media advisory which gave the impression that I would be physically present at the press conference during which he played the videotape, when, in fact, I was in Rome.

“Second, I was never informed that the videotape would become part of a press conference.

“Third, I gave the interview as a Bishop from the United States to encourage those engaged in the respect life apostolate, not as the Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.

“Fourth, I was never informed that the videotape would be used as part of a campaign of severe criticism of certain fellow bishops regarding the application of Canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law.

“If I had known what the true purpose of the interview was, I would never have agreed to participate in it.

“I am deeply sorry for the confusion and hurt which the wrong use of the videotape has caused to anyone, particularly, to my brother bishops.”

Tom Peters got it right when he suggested that folks in the Vatican start using "google" to do some quick checks.

EDIT 5:00AM March 27th: InPhiladelphia's, The Bulletin, an article, Catholic Archbishop Remorseful for misuse of his comments, points out:

Mr. Terry responded Archbishop Burke knew the goal of the campaign and the interview would be distributed [he just doesn't get it - he exploited the archbishop and the headlines in the news are a manifestation of that exploitation]

While many media outlets are attributing the archbishop with having said President Barack Obama is an “agent of death,” the following is the actual quote given by Archbishop Burke:
“But in any case, no matter who is the President of the United States, here is a world leader with a tremendous capacity to promote the common good, but at the same time sadly, who could — by promoting and implementing anti-life legislation measures — could be an agent of death.”

Here is the full Associated Press version that will be plastered all over the nation this morning - it does not show the context. Note even the title which makes it sound like the Archbishop is sorry for his comments - which were in accord with Catholic teaching - as opposed to being remorseful for the exploitation of his words.

For myself, it is pretty much confirmed, that Archbishop Burke had no clue who he was dealing with in Randall Terry. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was raising an eyebrow about the interview when it was first announced. I always saw Terry as a loose canon, but had not heard anything about him in decades, aside from the fact that he became Catholic in 2005. I thought that perhaps he had lost his militant edge, but it is clear he has not.

In my personal opinion - an opinion I have held for many years, Randall Terry has done considerable damage to the pro-life movement through "in your face" tactics. Exploiting Archbishop Burke to call for Abp Wuerl and other archbishops to be removed from their post for not denying Holy Communion is just one more example. Pray for him, and pray for Archbishop Burke, Archbishop Wuerl and others who were harmed by this stunt.

Bishop Olmsted: Notre Dame committed a public act of disobedience to US Bishops

In 2004, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a document - Catholics in Political Life, which included this line about how Catholic schools were to conduct themselves (emphasis mine in bold):

  • The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.

I predicted several days ago in passing, that when Bishop D'Arcy - the Ordinary of Fort Wayne - South Bend issued his statement, we might see a flood of statements coming out of other bishops. It's only a matter of courtesy to let the local Bishop have his say first. It took just one day for us to hear from the first bishop. I suspect we may be hearing from more in the near future as diocesan papers with bishop's columns begin to circulate.

Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix, Arizona sent a letter to Notre Dame president, Fr. Jenkins, yesterday - on the Feast of the Annunication He then authorized it's release.

Here it is in full:

Dear Fr. Jenkins,

I am saddened and heavy of heart about your decision to invite President Obama to speak at Notre Dame University and even to receive an honorary degree.

It is a public act of disobedience to the Bishops of the United States. Our USCCB June 2004 Statement "Catholics in Political Life" states: "The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions." No one could not know of the public stands and actions of the president on key issues opposed to the most vulnderable human beings.

John Paul II said, "Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights - for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture - is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with the maximum determination."

I pray that you come to see the grave mistake of your decision, and the way that it undercuts the Church's proclamation of the Gospel of Life in our day.

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted
Diocese of Phoenix

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Commentary on Catholic Dissidence and Bishop Morlino on Obedience

On the heels of the firing of a lay pastoral associate by Bishop Morlino in Madison, the Wisconsin bishop talks about the lay apostolate in this week's Catholic Herald. At the end, he speaks on the topic of obedience, often misunderstood. It is posted with yesterday's feast day - the Annunciation - in mind.

Before I give you that text and related link, I want to offer this thought...

God does not force His will on anyone. Mary was not forced to conceive Jesus. The Angel Gabriel waited for her "fiat", her "yes" to God's will. The Annunciation is not just about the Word become flesh, but it is a lesson in obedience to God's will - to go along with God's plan as it comes through others. Specifically for us, this means the Church, headed by the Successor to Peter. The plan never included a set of keys for every individual to "bind and lose" on their own, or through opinion polls, or with the flow of a given age. Remember, it was by popular opinion that Our Lord was nailed to a Cross!

Because we have a free will, obedience is a choice - one that can only be made by those who are free to choose it. But some are held captive by the world - a world which is always there to feed our human fallen nature, or the effects of Original Sin. It is why the story of Adam and Eve is distorted by dissenting theologians and their followers. If they were merely ficticious figures, then Original Sin could not exist. Without Original Sin, we would have no cause to gravitate to that which is disordered, sinful, and displeasing to God. And, it is why the Sacrament of Confession has fallen out of fashion because if there is no human fallen nature, then there is no sin and no need for reconciliation. These things are foreign to our Catholic faith!

Dissidents are trying to create a "designer religion" out of Catholicism in wanting to make it conform to their individual desires. It is a world from which Our Lord wants to set us free. It's a world whose ways are in conflict with God's ways. At it's core is often sexual promiscuity under the guise of sexual "freedom". Think about the teachings that dissidents would like changed and it will often lead right back to this so-called right which is nothing more than a right to sin and offend God, by choice.

They often want the Church to accept homosexual behavior. The Church embraces those with SSA, but cannot condone homosexual acts any more than it can condone heterosexual acts outside of Sacramental marriage. Others want to change the Church's teaching on abortion, or euthanasia, contraception and other "life" issues. Dissidents know where the Church stands on all of these issues, but they don't agree and feel that Holy Mother Church ought to bend with every wind of doctrine that comes with each new generation. As scripture tells us, Jesus is Truth. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever - do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. (Hebrews 13:8-9). Hence, there cannot be several versions truth any more than there can be several versions of Jesus.

The Cross exemplifies sacrifice and when we accept Church teachings - willfully, sacrificing our own desires, it becomes a white martyrdom. Next to death, there is nothing greater we can give to God than our own will. Mary said, "Your will Lord, not mine". The words and actions of Catholic dissidents is "Your will Lord, as long as it conforms to mine".

There is no such thing as right or left in the Church. There is loyal or disloyal; orthodox or dissenting. Or, there are those struggling quietly to understand Church teaching. These latter are not dissidents until they cross the line into challenging that which has been taught clearly and consistently. Such people are further distinguished from dissidents in that they actually read the catechism, read Church documents and when they don't understand something, they seek answers with humility. One doesn't need to understand to accept teachings. Faith seeks understanding and it does so with prayer, reflection, reading and inquiry of sources loyal to the Church.

On to something in Bishop Morlino's column this week, which appears at the end of Responding, like Mary, to God's will for us. In part, he says:

Calling to the lay apostolate
For the most part, you who are reading this have a particular calling to the lay apostolate. What a great group of men and women we have, who are coming forward to “assist and complement”my ministry and that of our great priests.

Clearly, there are a great many direct ways that lay people can serve the Church and their individual parishes, but your key role is simply and authentically living the Gospels in the midst of your day-to-day lives. The laity are called “by their very vocation, to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God (Lumen Gentium, 31).”

As the Council points out, you live in the world, in your various professions and occupations, and you encounter, in the various ordinary circumstances of family and social life, the work and presence of the Creator. And in the midst of all of that, you, yourselves, are called to be a anctifying presence, a “leaven” from within. You are called to reach out to evangelize and sanctify your fellow men and women, through the spirit of the Gospel, in accordance with the mind of the Church (Apostolicam Actuositatem, 2,6).And you are called to build a just society and a just state through politics, as Pope Benedict XVI has said.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it should be clear that it all comes back to obedience: obedience to the will of God the Father — for Mary, for Jesus Himself, for the Saints (because it is only in their obedience to the Father that they are Saints), and for us as well. It is not blind obedience to anyone’s will. Rather, it is obedience in faith, just like the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our obedience is not blind whatsoever, for we are walking in the light of God — by faith! Mary’s obedience to the will of God, her free consent to give life to the Redeemer, to share His life, to suffer with Him under the cross, and to sacrifice Him for the sake of the redemption of humankind, is the model we should follow as the Church, and individually.
I come back to the statement at the bottom of my posts - something I had to ponder when I was accused of "blind obedience" to the Church, and was told I should use my own brain.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Well, I have used my own brain and have made a free choice to accept all of the Church's teachings. At first I struggled with some of them. But, I chose a path of serious, quiet study and prayerful reflection. I dug into the Catechism, and then into church documents on those topics to understand why the Church has the position that she does. I went to competent, loyal and orthodox sources to see what they could offer, not to people who would enable me in my confusion, and ultimately lead to dissidence. It's a path I encourage for any Catholic who struggles with a teaching of the Church.

When Pope Paul VI made his prophetic encyclical, Humanae Vitae, he could not have known what science later revealed....that "the Pill" is sometimes an abortifacient. How would the Church have looked if she had went along with what the world desired, rather than follow truth? If the Church had said it was ok to use the pill back in 1968, she would have had to reverse herself or be in conflict with her own teachings when science learned that some eggs get fertilized, then flushed because the drug won't allow them to implant. That embryo had a soul - a soul that would never be baptized because it's life was snuffed out not by God, but by man. Natural Family Planning has come a long way today, from where it was years ago.

I believe this explains why we see priests and bishops becoming more vocal on contraception and faithful Catholics are starting to look closer themselves at the issue. We understand now that an ensouled human being in development is aborted through the actions of certain contraceptives.

WHAT SAY YOU?
I've had my say, now what say you? I'll allow any comments that are made in a charitable tone. Please allow some time for comment moderation since I try to do these in the evenings when I am home, or very early before heading out to work.

Archbishop Raymond L. Burke discusses Canon 915 in interview

EDIT: Actual video has been uploaded to YouTube and embedded here. Before watching, please read the statement released by Archbishop Burke in which he says he was misled as to the purpose of the interview, among other things.

Here is the interview we learned about earlier in the week....

(Pewsitter.com)March 25, 2009 - Washington, DC - Following is the transcript of Randall Terry’s interview with His Excellency, Archbishop Burke, Prefect, Apostolic Signatura on March 2, regarding Canon 915 and the withholding of communion from Catholic politicians that support abortion. The actual video footage of this interview was shown earlier today at a press conference at the National Press Club, in Washington DC. More information can be found at www.humbleplea.com

Mr. Terry: Your Excellency, it’s a delight to be with you. Thank you so much.

Archbishop Raymond Burke: Pleased to have you come, and to visit with you.

Mr. Terry: For the umpteenth time, I and the others are asking, under Canon 915 what should or should not be done?

Archbishop Burke: The Canon is completely clear, it is not subject in my judgment to any other interpretations. When someone is publicly and obstinately in grave sin we may not administer Holy Communion to the person. And that, basically, for two reasons: number one, to prevent the person himself or herself from committing a sacrilege, and secondly, to protect the sanctity of the Holy Eucharist. In other words, to approach, to receive our Lord in Holy Communion, when one insists on remaining in grave sin, is such a violation of the sanctity of the Holy Eucharist, so that Communion must not be given to people who are publicly, obstinately, in grave sin.

Mr. Terry: And so does that apply to politicians of any party that are saying: "Yes, it’s okay to abort children" –to kill children?

Archbishop Burke: Yes, for someone who in any way contributes in an active way to the murder of innocent defenseless infants in the womb—children in the womb—from the very inception of human life, this is the greatest of sins. And such a person, until he or she has reformed his or her life, should not approach to receive Holy Communion.

Mr. Terry: And if they do approach, the person who is administering Holy Communion should say, “No.”?

Archbishop Burke: Right. In fact, the Canon puts the burden upon the minister of Holy Communion whether it’s the ordinary minister which would be a bishop, a priest, a deacon—or an extraordinary minister—it doesn’t make any difference. It says they’re not to be admitted to receive Holy Communion. Normally speaking, in my experience, when I have spoken with, for instance, Catholic politicians who have insisted on supporting pro-abortion legislation and told them they should not approach any more to receive Holy Communion, in my experience they don’t. Now, where Bishops have not applied the Canon, often times it’s said that this will cause some kind of disorder at the time of distribution of Holy Communion. That’s not verified. It’s not using Holy Communion to make a statement at all, it’s simply respecting this most sacred gift we have - namely, the Body and Blood of Christ—which can only be received when one has repented of his sins. And I would also make the point—and I believe that it is true that on the contrary - those public figures—Catholics—who are consistently promoting pro-abortion legislation and policies—use reception of Holy Communion to try to justify what they are doing; in other words, to present themselves as devout Catholics, when in fact they are sinning against the most fundamental teaching of the moral law. [Thou shall not murder.]

Mr. Terry: When the election was approaching, Bishop Martino said he would not serve Communion to Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden. There were a handful of other bishops who made similar statements, for which the laity and the faithful were rejoicing.

But the deafening silence from so many other Bishops—and also the bishops who stepped up such as in Washington D.C., Virginia, others …Massachusetts…[and] said that we will serve communion—was so painful for us. What word of encouragement would you give, first to the laity on our struggle to bring orthodoxy back, and then to your brother bishops and priests?

Archbishop Burke: I think simply to say: reflect upon this norm of the Church’s discipline—Canon 915—which is one of the most important canons to safeguard the greatest treasure that we have in this life, namely, the communion that we have with our Lord Jesus Christ, and His true body and His true blood; and to, in every way work so that also public witness is given to the sacredness of the Holy Eucharist. And so I would encourage the faithful when they are scandalized by the giving of Holy Communion to persons are publicly and obstinately in sin, that they go to their pastors, whether it’s their parish priest or to their bishop, to insist that this scandal stop. Because, it is weakening the faith of everyone. It’s giving the impression that it must be morally correct to support procured abortion, in at least in some circumstances, if not also generally. So they need to insist that their parish priest and the bishops, and for the rest…to my brother bishops and brother priests…simply to say: the service of the Church in the world today has to begin first and foremost with the protection of the life of those who are the most defenseless and the most innocent, namely the unborn, and certainly has to extend also to those who are gravely ill, or burdened with serious illness, who have special needs; and also now more and more their lives are being threatened by a culture of death which sadly has infected our nation. So I would just urge my brother bishops and my brother priests to see as the most fundamental witness and service which they can give in leading also the faithful in their pastoral care is the apostolate of the respect for human life.

Mr. Terry: The election of Obama sent shock waves around the world concerning the right to life of babies because of his commitment to pursue FOCA, to try to force hospitals - Catholic hospitals - into giving the morning after pill, other things – [the repeal of the] Mexico City policy. From your vantage point here in the Vatican, what kind of fruit around the world is this poison that’s percolating in America producing?

Archbishop Burke: There is no question, and I certainly see it here, living now here in Europe, and Italy, and also with the kind of communication within all of Europe that Barack Obama—President Obama—is a charismatic figure. And there was a great deal of—especially through the media—a great deal of publicity and so forth regarding the “hope,” the word that he used so much, that he offered—not only for the United States— and for the world. And so you can be certain that the whole world, and especially the English speaking world—which let us recall, is a great part of the world—is following very carefully and attentively what this man is doing—this world leader—which he is. And therefore, it becomes more incumbent upon us then ever, also in our responsibility for the scandal and the harm being done, not only in our own nation which is in itself— which we think about 50 million since the Roe v. Wade decision, 50 million unborn infants murdered—but also to consider the effect that our nation is having on the whole world in this culture of death.

America has the call to lead—to use its influence in the way that will give glory to God and will serve the common good in its most essential element: and that is by turning around this culture of death, and especially protecting the right to life of the unborn. So our responsibility is even greater than just for our own nation - which is in itself such a weighty matter. But we have to see how this is also having, adding a tremendous influence in the English speaking world, but also in the whole world, because of the charismatic nature of our present President. But in any case, no matter who is the President of the United States, here is a world leader with a tremendous capacity to promote the common good, but at the same time sadly, who could—by promoting and implementing anti-life legislation measures—could be an agent of death.

Mr. Terry: If I was a Catholic in another country, I would be watching the news unfold in America hearing the silence of so many Catholics, the debate over communion, and it might have the effect of me just saying, “Well, we have abortion here, they’ve got it there, let’s just all learn to live with it and go on about our business.”

Archbishop Burke: Well, I think this is precisely the effect that it has had. The communications today are instantaneous. The whole world knows that a very high percentage of Catholics in fact voted for this very anti-life candidate and so they watch this very carefully, and what the world needs to see now is a strong witness on the part of all Catholics and we can’t be content with the fact that some 55% - or whatever it is - who for whatever reason, supported this anti-life program. They have to see now that Catholics in the United States are alive and faithful and that they are going to work to protect human life, and above all, to let the President of the United States know that this is the number one issue.

Mr. Terry: There are many Catholics who believed that to vote for Obama - knowing his promises to extend child-killing even further - that to knowingly vote for him under those circumstances was a type of cooperation with moral evil. It was cooperating with evil. Do you concur with that and if so, why?

Archbishop Burke: Well, the fact of the matter is, it is a form of cooperation, because by voting we put a person in office. And people say, “What does my vote matter?” Well, your vote is either a vote to put someone in office who will do what is right and just, or someone who won’t. And so if you, knowing that abortion is a grave crime against human life – is the killing of an innocent, defenseless human life - and you vote for the candidate who says that he intends to make that more available – that practice of infanticide - you bear a responsibility. That is, you have cooperated in the election of this person into office, there’s no question about it.

Mr. Terry: Archbishop, thank you for your time. Do you have any closing comments or exhortations?

Archbishop Burke: President Obama uses this word “hope” in a way that for us is very disturbing. We need to have hope, the hope that is founded in Jesus Christ, alive for us in the Church; Jesus Christ who gave His life for everyone without exception, and with a particular love for the suffering and for those who are the most defenseless. And so we have to be filled with hope and give ourselves more than ever to His work, to His mission of protecting human life, and so I ask God to bless you very much in what you are doing to advance the cause of life.

Mr. Terry: Thank you, Your Excellency; long life to you.

Notre Dame Scandal: Canon Lawyer explains what is NOT an option for Bishop D'Arcy

Edward N. Peters, JD, JCD, has offered some useful notes for those who are looking for specific things out of Bishop D'Arcy over the Notre Dame scandal - things he cannot do.

I was hoping we would hear from him on this precise set of issues because people often think that a bishop has more control over a university than he does.

Let's have a look at what he says in his blog at, In Light of the Law:
Breviter: Two things Bp. D'Arcy couldn't do re Notre Dame

I read all my email and try, within the limits imposed by work, other consults, and family, to respond to the many good questions sent my way. The most common question sent to me this week has been about possible canonical responses to Notre Dame's unbelievable honoring of a major pro-abortion politician, namely, President Obama.

This matter is not simple and my analysis of it would not lend itself to blog-style discussion anyway. But, for the benefit of readers who have asked, I can at least take two options off the table. Briefly:

1. The local bishop cannot put Notre Dame under a local interdict, even for a brief period, if for no other reason (and there would be other reasons) than that local interdict is not a penal option under the 1983 Code. While local interdict (and community interdict, its cousin) were possible under the Pio-Benedictine Code (see 1917 CIC 2268-2277), today, interdict is a purely personal penalty, meaning that only specific individuals, convicted of a canonical crime, can be interdicted (1983 CIC 1332).

2. The local bishop cannot forbid the celebration of Mass in campus oratories and chapels by a precept under 1983 CIC 1225. While the argument here rests more on scholarly opinion than does that above, I think the weight of that opinion would not support a bishop's using a precept to forbid Mass on campus during graduation weekend.

Mind, nothing in Bp. D'Arcy's statement today suggested that he was considering either option, but my advice to folks who have been considering suggesting them would be to save your time: neither action would be supportable under 1983 Code.

Salvo sapientiorum iudicio.
Ed Peters offered opinion ahead of that post, as well in a post entitled: Whither Notre Dame

March 25: Feast of the Annunciation

"The Annunciation" by Peter Paul Rubens (c 1609/1610)

Luke 1:46-55
My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Candid video interview with Abp Raymond L. Burke tomorrow - March 25th

This is rather interesting...tomorrow is the day. From Reuters:

Archbishop Burke, a Top Official in Vatican, Gives Candid Interview Dealing with President Obama, VP Joe Biden, Communion, U.S. Bishops, and the Guilt of American Catholics in the Last Election

WASHINGTON, March 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue.

On March 2, 2009, His Excellency, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, granted an unprecedented interview to Randall Terry.

Mr. Terry will show the entire interview (approx 12 minutes) at the Press Club
on Wednesday, March 25, at 10:00 A.M.

The questions ranged from how the Church should deal with pro-abortion politicians like Vice President Biden receiving Communion, the failure of certain U.S. bishops to obey and enforce Canon Law, what faithful laity should say to errant bishops, the guilt of Catholics who voted for Obama, and what we must do to bring reform to America and the Church.

In light of the recent invitation of Notre Dame to have President Obama speak at commencement, this interview is very timely.

Randall Terry states:

"Everyone who has seen this interview is stunned at Archbishop Burke's candor
and clarity. His words thunder, and are without equivocation.

"As one of the Pope's most powerful Prefects, we believe his words signal the Vatican's intention to deal more directly with American bishops, priests, and laity, who are betraying the lives of the innocent unborn, and Catholic Truth by their actions or by their silence.

"Since Archbishop Burke is the head of the papal courts, his words carry enormous weight concerning Church law. If cases are brought against individuals on these various matters, he is the 'chief justice' in the Vatican.

"The faithful will be strengthened by his words; the errant and rebellious will be warned."

What: Press Conference showing complete television interview with Archbishop Raymond Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura. (Vatican Courts.)

When: Wednesday, March 25, 2009, 10:00 A.M.

Where: National Press Club, 14th Street and F Street, Washington DC, Murrow Room.

What: All press will be given a DVD copy and a printed transcript of the interview.

Who: Randall Terry, Founder, Operation Rescue.

Mr. Terry will also take questions on upcoming protests at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Scandal: Reactions on March 24th

Click the pic to sign the online petition. There is very high traffic which may slow or hinder reaching the site. Try back at non-peak hours. Sign only once - a third party will be validating the online petition which is reaching 100,000 signatures as of this posting (just about 3 days since it's initiation)

EDIT 10:47pm......From NotreDameScandal.com:

The Cardinal Newman Society, CatholicVote.org & more than
101,384 signers!!!! (as of 10:37 p.m.)

I have just posted on, and made comments on Bishop D'Arcy's statement, released this afternoon, about the "Notre Dame Scandal".

The first thing I want to share are some interesting stats I saw appearing on http://notredamescandal.com/. They were providing updates several times daily with the number of people signing the online petition. In fact, it has gotten so big, servers were being overwhelmed (you may not be able to get to the site during peak hours so keep trying). The owners have decided to turn it over to a professional outfit which will ensure there are no duplicates (sign just once please).

  • Within 24 hours of the debut of this new website, initiated by the Cardinal Newman Society, over 10,000 signatures had been collected.
  • Within 48 hours, it had over 20,000.
  • Here we are some three days later and I saw it was over 50,000 by mid-morning, 60k by lunchtime and the last posting they made within the last hour was topping 93k! I'm sure it will top 100,000 before midnight, and then some (keep in mind that when you see reports of these stats in the articles below, they were only a snapshot in time).

Word has not only been getting around in Catholic circles. The noise has been so great that it has been heard by the mainstream media or "MSM". Here are a few headlines:

Let's look at some of the Catholic commentary out there. There is a clear dividing line, not between right and left, or liberal and progressive. Rather, the division is one of loyalty to the most basic, fundamental teachings of the Catholic Church, or disloyalty. Or, put another way - orthodox or dissident. There is a third category and that is those souls who struggle with a Church teaching, but are working to resolve that struggle, and not in some public way through challenges. Dissidence is all about challenging Church teachings because they DO understand them and want to change them.

I'm going to offer a few excerpts from a few of the many things I have found and let you follow the links to read them in their entirety.

Probably the most worthwhile thing to read thus far, is a piece by Ralph McInerny, PhD, who has taught for 54 years at Notre Dame. It appeared in The Catholic Thing. Here is the beginning of: Is Obama Worth a Mass? (do read this entire piece):

Now that the abortion president will be honored and feted and listened to at Notre Dame’s commencement, the question becomes, who will say the commencement
Mass?

The University of Notre Dame has officially and with much self-satisfaction invite President Barack Obama to address its 2009 graduates and to receive an honorary law degree. Not to put too fine a point on it, this is a deliberate thumbing of the collective nose at the Roman Catholic Church to which Notre Dame purports to be faithful. Faithful? Tell it to Julian the Apostate.

That someone who procures or advocates abortion thereby excludes himself from communion with the Church has been clear doctrine all along, and increasingly bishops have found the courage to tell those Catholic politicians who are the great enablers of abortion legislation that they cannot receive Holy Communion. Is it any worse to celebrate such a politician as Barack Obama?....."

Let's look at some other commentary.

In a large collection of comments entitled, A Moral Exemplar? at NRO from some solid and well known Catholics (it goes on for pages and these are just snippets from each), Fr. James V. Schall points out:

"....Clearly, some things are incompatible with honor, others are incompatible with truth, the purpose of a university. Aristotle says that the highest reward of the politician is honor, something more coveted than power or wealth. Honor is something the politician seeks, even covets. The academic, for his part, longs for recognition. He wants his often obscure work to be “appreciated.” The polity has its own rewards, its own honors. The accepting of the honor to the president evidently meets his purposes. The awarding it seems to meet the purposes of the university. Some say that it is a perfect fit. Others suspect that both parties, in accepting and giving such honors, manage to demean each other in what each is, in truth, expected to stand for."
That goes back to what Bishop D'Arcy said in the statement he released this afternoon:

"....as a Catholic University, Notre Dame must ask itself, if by this decision
it has chosen prestige over truth."

In the same composite of commentaries cited above, George Weigel comments:

Notre Dame’s decision to make President Obama its 2009 commencement speaker is a very bad thing. It’s bad for Notre Dame, bad for Catholic moral witness in America, and bad for the bishops who are trying to mount a defense against the Obama administration’s assault on the conscience rights of Catholic health-care professionals.

The invitation to deliver a commencement address, especially when coupled with the award of an honorary degree, is not a neutral act. It’s an act by which a Catholic institution of higher learning says, “This is a life worth emulating according to our understanding of the true, the good, and the beautiful.” It is frankly beyond my imagining how Notre Dame can say that of a president who has put the United States back into the business of funding abortion abroad; a president who made a mockery of the very idea of moral argument in his speech announcing federal funding for embryo-destructive stem cell research; a president whose administration and its congressional allies are snatching tuition vouchers out of the hands of desperately poor Washington, D.C., children who just as desperately want to attend Catholic schools.

And, again we hear from Ralph McInerny, much more candid than his piece in the Catholic Thing:

Bernie Madoff has declined an honorary doctorate in economics from the University of Notre Dame, but all is not lost. Barack Hussein Obama, enabler in chief of abortion, has agreed to speak at the 2009 commencement and to receive an honorary doctorate of law. That abortion and its advocacy violate a primary precept of natural law reinforced by the Catholic Church’s explicit doctrine is a mere bagatelle. Wackos of all kinds will kick up a fuss, of course, but their protest will go unnoticed in South Bend. The pell-mell pursuit of warm and fuzzy Catholicism will continue. How better to defend the faith than to celebrate a man who advocates polishing off babies even after they are born? The newly created Herod Award will be added to the university’s recognition of the chief magistrate. Administrators are hugging themselves with delight at this massive publicity coup. The national championship in football has eluded Notre Dame for many years, but when the president dribbles onto the stage at the great event, the hall will erupt in ecstatic applause; the president, Father Jenkins, will wring his hand; and a final nail will be driven into the coffin of a once-great Catholic university. No one will note nor long remember what Barack Obama says on the occasion. Who listens to commencement addresses? But the Lady atop the golden dome, recalling the flight into Egypt, will exhibit one of her many titles: She who weeps.
Of course, there are plenty of dissident Catholic sources out there. Some of the titles reveal the dissidence right at the outset.

David Gibson at Commonweal, quipped (emphases mine in bold and italics):

"...Bishop D’Arcy says ND president Father John Jenkins, CSC did not inform him of the invitation until shortly before Obama’s acceptance was announced, and that he will not attend the commencement, the first time he will boycott it in his 25 years as bishop. [snip]”

He concludes with a jab at Notre Dame, saying it must ask itself “if by this decision it has chosen prestige over truth....”

Michael Sean Winters, in Three Cheers for Notre Dame, at America magazine oline said (my comments bracketed in red.....sorry, I couldn't help myself and truth be told, I wasn't sure where to begin):

".....This latest contretemps is disturbing not only because some of us are more than tired with the right wing [he is referring to loyalists here since there is no right or left in the Church.] insisting that only they can lay claim to the mantle of Catholicism [common dissident argument, but where it falls flat is that you can't have several versions of the truth any more than you can have more than one Jesus. He is Truth, and there are absolutes. You can't bend a compass needle in an attempt to proclaim that south is actually north. It does not change the objective reality that north is north], that those of us who see the demands of the world, or the challenge of the Gospels, differently are bad Catholics [those demands and challenges must be dealt with in light of the Gospels, and in light of the fullness of truth, not in the absence of it Our Lord didn't get everyone their own set of keys to bind and lose in ways suitable to each person; they were given to Peter]. Last week, before the latest mess, I ran into a priest whom I have known for more than twenty years but whom I had not seen recently. He did not discuss President Obama, he ranted. He did not offer a conversation or even an argument, he threw out slogans, and vulgar slogans at that, despite the fact that he is one of the least vulgar men I have ever known.

What is it about President Obama that makes the right wing so crazy, so uncharitable, so frothing-at-the-mouth unreasonable?...." [Answer: Murder! Murder of the innocence - state sanctioned and funded with our tax dollars! Explain to me how charitable it is to dismember the body of a baby? How charitable is it when young girls are forced into murdering their babies. The choice is often not theirs, but the choice of a parent or boyfriend. Is that charitable?]

Joe Feuerherd's devotes an entire article to attacking Patrick Reilly of the Cardinal Newman Society which initiated the online petition. His article, "Catholic academic ayatollah shows true colors" is at the National Catholic Reporter online. This is the same dissenting weekly that brought to the web, it's "Young Voices", one of which was discussed in my open letter to US Catholic Bishops.

Here's just a sample of the attack against Mr. Reilly:

Here’s what is really going on. Ayatollah Reilly searches for hot button issues on Catholic campuses -- anything that has to do with gays gets them excited, as do performances of “The Vagina Monologues” and, of course, pro-choice speakers (few of whom actually even discuss abortion in their presentations) – that will energize their base of donors and activists. Then they highlight these offenses on the Web and through direct mail to generate revenue.

Yeah - it is a problem when a Catholic university advances things which are in direct conflict with clear and consistent teachings of the Catholic Church.

With that, I leave you with a video commentary from loyal Catholic, Michael Voris of Real Catholic TV.

Bishop D'Arcy speaks on Notre Dame's plans to honor Obama at 2009 commencements

Bishop John M. D'Arcy, the ordinary for the Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend, issued a statement today on the invitation extended to President Obama by the University of Notre Dame. The statement, which had been anticipated this morning, appeared on the diocesan website early in the afternoon.

Before I get into the statement, note that I plan on another, more extensive post with reactions from various sources.

Emphasis mine in bold; comments bracketed in red. Links have been added for your convenience.

Concerning President Barack Obama speaking at Notre Dame graduation, receiving honorary law degree

March 24, 2009

On Friday, March 21 [!?!?!], Father John Jenkins, CSC, phoned to inform me that President Obama had accepted his invitation to speak to the graduating class at Notre Dame and receive an honorary degree. We spoke shortly before the announcement was made public at the White House press briefing. It was the first time that I had been informed that Notre Dame had issued this invitation. [Wasn't it respectful of Father to notify the bishop of the diocese AFTER the invitation was extended? It's the old "forgiveness vs. permission" thing, but in this case, Fr. Jenkins isn't seeking forgiveness].

President Obama has recently reaffirmed, and has now placed in public policy, his long-stated unwillingness to hold human life as sacred. While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life.

This will be the 25th Notre Dame graduation during my time as bishop. After much prayer, I have decided not to attend the graduation. I wish no disrespect to our president, I pray for him and wish him well. I have always revered the Office of the Presidency. But a bishop must teach the Catholic faith “in season and out of season,” and he teaches not only by his words — but by his actions. [Bravo!]

My decision is not an attack on anyone, but is in defense of the truth about human life. [It's not a negative action, but a positive action, but the dissident Catholic journalists and secularists will spin it negative and call it "political", "right-wing", or "conservative".]

I have in mind also the statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops in 2004. “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” Indeed, the measure of any Catholic institution is not only what it stands for, but also what it will not stand for.

I have spoken with Professor Mary Ann Glendon, who is to receive the Laetare Medal. I have known her for many years and hold her in high esteem. We are both teachers, but in different ways. I have encouraged her to accept this award and take the opportunity such an award gives her to teach. [It will be interesting to watch what she does. Will she go and use the opportunity to teach? Or, will she too feel the need to boycott?]

Even as I continue to ponder in prayer these events, which many have found shocking, so must Notre Dame. Indeed, as a Catholic University, Notre Dame must ask itself, if by this decision it has chosen prestige over truth. [Excellent! However, it takes a properly formed conscience - one formed in light of Magisterial teachings for the university to even begin a collective examination of conscience.]

Tomorrow, we celebrate as Catholics the moment when our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, became a child in the womb of his most holy mother [thank God she said "yes" to life!]. Let us ask Our Lady to intercede for the university named in her honor, that it may recommit itself to the primacy of truth over prestige.

Bishop Salvatore Joseph Cordileone named Bishop of Oakland. Next up: St. Louis

The Pope has named San Diego auxiliary bishop, Salvatore Joseph Cordileone to the Oakland, California diocese which recently became vacant when Archbishop Allen Vigneron was installed in Detroit a few months back.

The 52 year old has been an auxiliary bishop since 2002 for San Diego.

A few other brief notes I can mention on my lunch hour here:

  • He is a canonist who worked in the curia at the Apostolic Signatura which is friend, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke now heads.
  • He is vocally pro-life, pro-family, and pro-marriage (in the Catholic sense)
  • He is strongly supportive of the traditional Latin Mass, celebrating the Requiem in EF for a priest who died in the diocese.

More US Appointments?

According to Rocco's report at "Whispers" above, we should be seeing a replacement for Abp Raymond Burke who left St. Louis vacant when he was appointed to the Signatura. Stay tuned!

Of course, we are also keeping a close eye on Westminster in the UK - a very critical appointment. However long it takes for the Vatican to get it right is the most important, but let's pray it is sooner than later.

More later, perhaps tonight!

EDIT: I've added sharing to Twitter and Facebook from Plurk. So, when I Plurk, it will show up in both of those places.

I'm still getting use to this "hyper-media". I've finally convinced myself that I need a Twitter account. I kind of like the layout of Plurk better though.

Statement from Bishop Morlino to NCR on personnel matters after firing of pastoral associate

Bishop Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin took administrative action against a pastoral associate, Ruth Kolpack, firing her from the position she held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Beloit, WI since 1995. Her dismissal followed a meeting that lasted all of about 10 minutes.

The dissident weekly, the National Catholic Reporter, defended Ms. Kolpack in an article parsed well by Fr. Z, in his blogpost: NCR defends a fired parish worker. I highly recommend you read his comments woven throughout the article. It's a good way to see how dissidents spin things when someone sheds a spotlight on them.

Complaints being lodged against the pastoral associate over the last few years had been the focus of some meetings between the diocese, the pastor - Fr. Steve Kortendick, and Ms. Kolpack. They were unable to come to a resolution satisfactory to the diocese. An investigation led to a closer look at a Master's thesis she wrote in 2003. The bishop said he did not need to read the entire thesis, which focused mainly in "inclusivness" and attacked the "patriarchal tone of the liturgy".

From Ms. Kolpack's own account of the meeting, according to NCR, we learn the following:

  • The bishop said her views on the teachings of Jesus were "off base".
  • The bishop "asked her to denounce the thesis, make a profession of faith, and take an oath of loyalty in order to remain as a pastoral associate at the parish".
  • Ms. Kolpack, "could not refute the thesis in good conscience, that to dos [sic] so would risk her reputation as a scholar and academician".
  • She was fired 10 minutes into the meeting.
There you have it. Bishop Morlino didn't take her job from her, he gave Ms. Kolpack an opportunity to keep the job and she blew it.

It's a little hard for a bishop to respond to allegations of verbal heresy not recorded in audio, video, or on paper. However, if the accusations made against Ms. Kolpack could find their basis in the 2003 thesis, then it gives credibility to the accusations. The fact that the bishop didn't need to read the entire thesis says enough. If, for example, someone challenges the Divinity of Christ, there is no way to explain your way out of it later in the paper. It is what it is.

The bishop offered to come to the parish to explain the firing, but said he could not get into specific personnel matters. This is common folks. Whenever displinary administrative action is taken, there is a fine line that ought not be crossed, lest they risk engaging in detraction.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin speaks :

(emphases mine in bold)

Full statement offered to the National Catholic Reporter, regarding personnel issues.

It is out of respect for the dignity and good reputation of every person involved, in this and all personnel matters, that specifics cannot and will not be discussed. You can be assured that the canonical and civil rights of each individual have been upheld absolutely. The Church takes this very seriously. I cannot make statements regarding Ms. Kolpack, as they could injure her good reputation. If a person or group chooses to make public information or conversations that put someone’s reputation into question, that is their decision, but the Church, and individuals associated with it, cannot play party to the serious sins of detraction and calumny.

That said, in general, it is an absolute fact that through our Baptism in Christ, there is a genuine equality of dignity and action among all of Christ's faithful. Because of this equality, we all contribute, each according to our own condition and office, to the building up of the Body of Christ. Likewise, conscious of our own responsibility, we are bound to show christian obedience to what the sacred Pastors, who represent Christ, declare as teachers of the faith. The bishops and priests must teach the truth, without compromise.

This unadulterated truth, as taught by Christ’s bride, the Church, cannot ever be forsaken. Church personnel, likewise, must uphold the faith and morals of the Church, according to our their condition and office, through what they publicly teach and claim to believe, what they associate themselves with, and by their actions. Public actions, associations and teachings contrary to Church doctrine are at worst seriously scandalous, and at best very inappropriate for someone working for the Church, be it a bishop or a lay person. This must be corrected in every situation, as unpopular or as difficult as it may be.

This is not to say that if someone is let go, that they have not done some truly great things. However, bishops and priests have an obligation to stand up for the truth; the truth of the Catholic faith; the universal doctrine of the Church.

Folks, I think we are going to be hearing about more things like this. The bishops are getting their voice. Don't grumble about it being late. Just be grateful that they are acting on the graces falling upon them to clean up the mess spoken about by Archbishop Chaput at a conference in Detroit this past Saturday.

EDIT: My deepest sense is that we are going to see an increase in this kind of thing. In the past, valid complaints were merely dealt with behind closed doors and if the person didn't change their ways, the poor people of the parish were left to suffer. This doesn't mean the diocese didn't continue to talk to the priest or personnel involved, but at some point, talk needs to end and action needs to be taken for the good of the people, and ultimately for the Church. This newer generation of bishops is just getting warmed up and their zeal is rubbing off on other bishops.

Pray for our bishops! May they take back the Church in America from the grips of dissidents!

Archbishop Chaput on "40 Years of American Catholic Complacency and Poor Formation"

I really wanted to attend this conference, but had a conflict with the date. It was held at nearby Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit where the Archbishop of Denver, Charles Chaput, was the keynote speaker. Here is coverage from Catholic News Agency... (emphases mine in bold; comments in red)

Detroit, Mich., Mar 21, 2009 / 12:32 pm (CNA).- Archbishop of Denver Charles J. Chaput delivered a speech on Saturday reflecting on the significance of the November 2008 election. Warning that media “narratives” should not obscure truth, he blamed the indifference and complacency of many U.S. Catholics for the country’s failures on abortion, poverty and immigration issues.

He also advised Catholics to “master the language of popular culture” and to refuse to be afraid, saying “fear is the disease of our age.” [Sometimes the only thing we need to fear is the reaction or rejection of others, often close friends or family members. Compare that to the early Christians who DIED for the truth's of the faith. Also, there is another kind of "fear" involved. It is a false fear, guided by a false sense of charity. That is, not wanting to offend or hurt someone else's feelings by standing up for objective truth. What is lacking is the concern for God's "feelings".]

The archbishop’s comments were delivered in his keynote address at the Hands-On Conference Celebrating the Year of St. Paul, which was hosted at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit.

Having been asked to examine what November 2008 and its aftermath can teach Catholics about American culture, the state of American Catholicism and the kind of Pauline discipleship necessary today, Archbishop Chaput said:

“November showed us that 40 years of American Catholic complacency and poor formation are bearing exactly the fruit we should have expected. Or to put it more discreetly, the November elections confirmed a trend, rather than created a new moment, in American culture.” [This is not just poor formation of Catholics - we know catechesis has been watered down, lousy, and at times, downright heretical. There is the formation of priests and religious which was even worse. Many things were missing or outright perverted in order to support some other agenda. The Divinity of Christ is challenged (i.e., they claim the miracle of the loaves was not a miracle, but simply good people working hard to share what they had). Another example: If Adam and Eve were fictional as some alleged, then Original Sin could not be real. If Original Sin were not real, then there could be no concupiscence (fallen human nature which makes us gravitate toward's sinful choices, rather than virtuous). What comes next is that sin is not considered sin. And, there is no need for sacramental confession. This is often seen among dissidents who advance "strange teachings" contrary to basic, consistent Church teachings on things like abortion, embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, homosexuality, women's ordination, etc].

Noting that there was no question about President Barack Obama’s views on abortion “rights,” embryonic stem cell research and other “problematic issues,” he commented:

“Some Catholics in both political parties are deeply troubled by these issues. But too many Catholics just don’t really care. That’s the truth of it. If they cared, our political environment would be different. If 65 million Catholics really cared about their faith and cared about what it teaches, neither political party could ignore what we believe about justice for the poor, or the homeless, or immigrants, or the unborn child. If 65 million American Catholics really understood their faith, we wouldn’t need to waste each other’s time arguing about whether the legalized killing of an unborn child is somehow ‘balanced out’ or excused by three other good social policies.”

Offering a sober evaluation of the state of American Catholicism, he added:

“We need to stop over-counting our numbers, our influence, our institutions and our resources, because they’re not real. We can’t talk about following St. Paul and converting our culture until we sober up and get honest about what we’ve allowed ourselves to become. We need to stop lying to each other, to ourselves and to God by claiming to ‘personally oppose’ some homicidal evil -- but then allowing it to be legal at the same time.” [Well said!]

Commenting on society’s attitude towards Catholic beliefs, Archbishop Chaput said, “we have to make ourselves stupid to believe some of the things American Catholics are now expected to accept.” [Yeah! Like the argument that "reducing abortions" is somehow helpful when it is actually a fallacy].

“There’s nothing more empty-headed in a pluralist democracy than telling citizens to keep quiet about their beliefs. A healthy democracy requires exactly the opposite.”

Noting the 2008 presidential campaign’s “revealing” focus upon the candidates’ “narratives,” he said the campaign seemed not to involve facts, but rather “story-telling.”

“Of course, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with story-telling -- unless the press and other news media themselves become part of the story-telling syndicate; in other words, peddlers of narratives in which facts are not told because they’re true, but rather become ‘true’ because they’re told by those who have the power to create an absorbing narrative,” the archbishop explained. [great explanation of what is happening with the media]

In such a state, he warned, real power does not rest with the people but with those who “shape the structure of our information.” [Precisely! It is also why things like Catholic blogging, Catholic Radio, TV and Internet TV are so important]. He linked this situation with Pope Benedict’s critique of the “dictatorship of relativism.”

The archbishop also connected this relativistic spirit to St. Paul’s appearance at the Aeropagus, recounted in the Book of Acts. At the Areopagus, a prestigious place of debate for Greek philosophers, “Nearly anything was tolerated, so long as no one claimed to have an exclusive and binding claim on the truth,” the archbishop explained.

He then quoted Acts 17’s description of the Areopagite mindset: “All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.”

“It’s worth paying attention to that description. There’s no mention of truth,” he commented, noting that when St. Paul preaches the truth “he’s mocked and despised and his preaching is a failure, at least in the short term.” [And, so it will be with bishops, priests, consecrated, and lay people who also speak the truth. Don't expect everyone to like you when you speak the truth, but it should always be done with great love and charity]

“Paul’s failure at the Areopagus is a good lesson for the times we face now in America,” the archbishop said. “When Catholics start leading their daily lives without a hunger for something higher than their own ambitions or appetites, or with the idea that they can create their own truth and then baptize it with an appeal to personal conscience, they become, in practice, agnostics in their personal lives, and Sophists in their public lives. In fact, people who openly reject God or dismiss Christianity as obsolete are sometimes far more honest and far less discouraging than Catholics who claim to be faithful to the Church but directly reject her guidance by their words and actions.” [leading this group are dissident Catholic politicians, educators and journalists]

Noting that Paul mastered the language of the popular urban culture of his time and used “every technical resource, tool and environment at his disposal,” Archbishop Chaput extensively quoted Pope John Paul II’s 1990 encyclical Redemptoris Missio, which also discussed St. Paul at the Areopagus.

“If Paul felt so fiercely compelled to preach the Gospel -- whether ‘timely [or] untimely’ -- to a pagan world, then how should we feel today, preaching the Gospel to an apostate world?” he asked, answering that the love of Christ must “impel” Catholics forward.

[This is important....]“Catholics in America, at least the many good Catholics who yearn to live their faith honestly and deeply, can easily feel tempted to hopelessness,” he concluded. “It becomes very burdensome to watch so many persons who call themselves Catholic compromise their faith and submit their hearts and consciences to the Caesars of our day.”

But Archbishop Chaput closed by encouraging Christians to remember the words of Jesus:

“In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is one bishop who his using his talents very well. May God grace all of our bishops with talents that can be multiplied in the Mystical Body of Christ.

The Gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church. We are headed in to hard times and must come out of our own personal complacency. Learn the faith! Live the faith!

As a reminder, we learned yesterday that Archbishop Chaput encouraged people at the seminar to write to Notre Dame President, John Jenkins to express disapproval at the university's decision to invite President Obama to speak at commencements. It is understood that he will be given an honorary degree, as well.

Africa: Pope Decries Clouds of Evil

From Yahoo News:

LUANDA, Angola – Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass Sunday with hundreds of thousands of Angolans and decried the "clouds of evil" over Africa that have spawned war, tribalism and ethnic rivalry that he said condemned poor people to virtual slavery.

The biggest crowd of Benedict's first pilgrimage to Africa turned up in sweltering heat for the open-air service on the outskirts of Angola's seaside capital, Luanda. It was the last major event of his seven-day trip, which ends Monday.

The Fourth Sunday in Lent: Laetare Sunday

From Intermerifica.org:

The fourth Sunday in Lent (Mid-Lent) derives its Latin name from the first word of the Mass text, "Laetare Jerusalem" (Rejoice, O Jerusalem). It is a day of joy within the mourning season. The altars may be decorated with flowers, organ playing is permitted, and the priests may wear rose-colored vestments instead of purple. The reason for such display of joy is explained in a sermon by Pope Innocent III (1216):

"On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling
relaxation is provided, so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart."[31]

As a symbol of this joy the popes used to carry a golden rose in their right hand when returning from the celebration of Mass. Pope Leo IX (1051) calls this custom an "ancient institution." Originally it was a single rose of natural size, but since the fifteenth century it has consisted of a cluster or branch of roses wrought of pure gold and set with precious stones in brilliant workmanship by famous artists. The popes bless it every year, and often they confer it upon churches, shrines, cities, or distinguished persons as a token of esteem and paternal affection. In case of such a bestowal, a new rose is made during the subsequent year. The meaning and symbolism of the golden rose is expressed in the prayer of blessing. It represents Christ in the shining splendor of His majesty, the "flower sprung from the root of Jesse." From this ecclesiastical custom Laetare Sunday acquired its German name, Rosensonntag (Sunday of the Rose).

In this country Laetare Sunday receives much publicity in the papers because of Notre Dame's bestowal each year (since 1883) of the Laetare Medal on an American lay Catholic distinguished in literature, art, science, philanthropy, sociology, or other field of achievement. It is an adaptation of the papal custom of the golden rose, and the medal is made of heavy gold and black enamel tracings bearing the inscription "Magna est veritas et praevalebit" (Truth is mighty and shall prevail). It is suspended from a bar on which is lettered "Laetare Medal."

Since I had to go to 6:30 am Mass today (and was glad to hear another great sermon by Fr. Perrone which I will try to get for the blog), I have no fresh pics of Laetare Sunday. Those shown here are from 2008. If you would like to see more, click the link below:

Archbishop Chaput encourages people to write to Notre Dame president over Obama commencement invitation

EDIT MARCH 24, 2009 AT 10:25PM:

Thanks to the Catholic News Agency, I am correcting this post to clarify what I have posted below for the benefit of those reaching this through other bloggers.

I got the information second-hand. In fact, it could be classified as "third-hand" for that matter. I am going to refer to you the account provided by the Catholic News Agency which obtained it's info from a recording at the event. Let this account of Archbishop Chaput's words, and the context in which it was said, stand.

CNA was able to acquire an audio recording of the event in question and found that rather than calling for a letter writing campaign, the archbishop suggested it as a response to the situation.

Responding to a question about how “faithful Catholics should respond to [general] situations like [Notre Dame’s invitation to Obama], Chaput suggested, “Protest, write letters, express your concern, do it charitably.” He further reminded the audience that “Jesus said we need to be like sheep among wolves” and to “act like Christians when we disagree: to be bold, courageous, and clear, but charitable.”

Folks, hang on.....this is going to be one interesting ride.

Notre Dame, which has historically invited US Presidents to give commencement speeches and to give them honorary degrees, has done so with President Obama. Apparently, that invitation was accepted. I blogged on this yesterday and provided some links.

I was alerted to Tom Peter's post on Twitter, that Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, who was in Detroit today for a seminar on St. Paul at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, encouraged people to write to Notre Dame President, John Jenkins, SJ. Tom writes:

I just heard that Archbishop Chaput, who is at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in
Detroit
for their St. Paul conference, has encouraged people to write charitably to the President of ND to protest the Obama invite.

Tom has a lot more background in this post made yesterday. The combox there is quite active, as well with 104 comments as of this posting.

There are a few ways to reach the President of Notre Dame - see this page.

I would go a step further. I think letters should also go to Bishop John D'Arcy of Fort Wayne - South Bend, Indiana, and to the Papal Nuncio, Pietro Sambi.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

It's Saturday, in Lent ....Go to Confession!

It's Saturday - the time when most parishes (if they are worth their salt) offer regular confessions.

At Assumption Grotto in Detroit, you can count on a good confessor who won't belittle you if you want to confess venial sins and imperfections, if you don't have any serious sin. They will help walk you through a general confession if you haven't been in a long time, or forgot how to go to confession.

While there is confession on Sunday's at Assumption Grotto, the lines prompt priests and pentitents to be brief. Saturdays can sometimes be slow, presenting opportunities when slightly longer confession time is needed. I've seen some confessionals open for long periods of time on Saturday afternoons bewteen 2:30 and 3:30. Whenever there are lines, it is wise to keep it very short and brief.

With that, read up on what St. Francis DeSales has to say about Confession.

Outrageous: Notre Dame University to honor President Obama

Ok - so a university has President Obama in the queue for the commencement speech.

There is only one problem: It is Notre Dame - a Catholic institution and Obama has gone out of his way to advance a culture of death agenda which is contrary to the Mission of the Church. Just having this President at any official function at a Catholic institution is completely scandalous (meaning, it leads others into error).

See the scoop at LSN: Catholic Notre Dame University to Give Obama Honorary Degree on May 17, Against USCCB Policy

You can make your voice heard on this matter. Find out more at NotreDameScandal.com. Also worth reading is the combox in this post at Fr. Z's blog. EDIT 21-Mr-09: Tom Peters has good coverage as well at American Papist.

We can only hope that Bishop D'Arcy follows Bishop Martino's lead in handling a similar problem at Misericordia, which is ongoing, starting with a statement of "absolute disapproval". It doesn't matter if he is the President of the United States or not.

If you still don't see the problem, this may help you. This is just a sampling. It's like he is going out of his way to select pro-abortion Catholics and other Catholics who have advanced things contrary to Catholic teaching.

Must see Real Catholic TV

I got this in my inbox from Michael Voris over at Real Catholic TV. Please take a moment to read this in it's entirety.....very carefully.

We need a solid Catholic web-presence and the folks at Real Catholic TV have been doing a good job of bringing free news and commentary, as well as a modest subscription for premium programs ($10 per month for many hours of programming every week).

The economy is tough on all apostolates. I hope you will consider supporting one that has done a great job of making Catholic teachings available in some very creative ways.

Here is that message from Michael Voris of Real Catholic TV:

Hello and a Holy Lent to you,

The world is changing dramatically and the Catholic world seems to be slow to recognize this.

In the arena of technology, it seems the Church is just arriving when everyone else is already leaving.

This poses enormous dangers for teaching the Faith and Evangelizing. Each day that passes, the internet becomes a greater threat to souls, with its unending stream of pornography, immorality and sheer banality passing for entertainment.

There needs to be a solid Catholic presence on the 'net that is video based.

That's why we'd like to you click on this link and spend a few moments watching. It pretty much says it all.

http://www.RealCatholicTV.net/vortex.php

Please support our mission. Catholics must get established on the internet just like the enemies of the Church are doing (with video) or our cultural fate will be sealed.

Time is running out.

Call to Holiness: Treasures of the Mass - October 10, 2009 - Royal Oak, MI

Click the pic for a PDF to see the registration form more clearly and to print it out.

Call to Holiness will hold a conference on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 8:30am to 4:15pm (with registration starting at 7:00am).

It will be held at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan which has a large seating capacity in two tiers.

There are some really great speakers lined up!

First, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC of Karaganda, Kazakhstan will speak on The Sacredness of the Holy Eucharist and the Fathers of the Church.

You may recall that His Excellency is the author of the excellent new book, Dominus Est, on reception of Holy Communion. It was published by the Vatican's own library last year. Bishop Schneider has a PhD in Patristics and his book looks closely at the reception of Communion in the Catholic Church. It was excerpted in the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano about a year ago: Historical-Liturgical Notes on the Rite of the Eucharist. He also brings a unique perspective, having made his First Holy Communion in secrecy within the former Soviet Union. See more posts at Te Deum Laudamus on Bishop Schneider, including photo-coverage of his visit to the US in July 2008 (scroll).

Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, aka, "Fr. Z" of the well-trafficked blog, What Does the Prayer Really Say?, and column of the same name in The Wanderer, will be at the conference.

The title of his talk is: Mystery Both Fearsome and Alluring: Holy Mass and True Active Participation.

Assumption Grotto's pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone, will speak on Treasures of the Mass Explored. Father is a gifted speaker. He is diocesan priest, but also a secular Carmelite. When he speaks on any spiritual topic he goes into depths and into angles often not explored in these times. All that he offers is timeless and most applies to either form of the Mass, ordinary and extraordinary.

While there may be yet another speaker, the fourth and last one listed, is Dr. Michael P. Foley who will talk on How the Mass Shaped the Western World. Click for more about Dr. Foley.

Bishop Martino to Misericordia: No Meeting Until his Request for Specific Info is Fulfilled

I have GOT to send this bishop a Mass Card with a thank you note. Perhaps you might follow my lead.

I suspected we would hear from His Excellency, Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton today because it coincides with the release of the diocesan newspaper which happens around every three weeks on a Wednesday/Thursday afternoon.

In this latest press release, Bishop Martino has responded to a March 3rd statement found on the website of Misericordia Univeristy in which they said, in part [my comments bracketed in red]:

Misericordia University is working diligently to schedule a meeting with the Bishop and his delegates so dialogue can be established among representatives of our founders and sponsors, the Religious Sisters of Mercy, university administrators, members of the Board of Trustees and the Diocese. [Makes you wonder if a few sponsors were getting uncomfortable with the negative publicity. One parent interviewed locally said she had no idea such things were happening at the local Catholic university and was glad the bishop had brought it out in the open]

Misericordia University respects the Bishop’s position. [note the lack of a "but" here versus previous statements found in the paper which escalated the matter].
The University looks forward to resolving these concerns directly with Bishop Martino. [and if they want to resolve it they should start by respecting the office he holds and give him that for which he is asking]

Here is that statement in full [emphases mine in bold in the first portion - the rest is background info]:

Bishop Announces Position on Meeting with Misericordia University

Bishop Joseph F. Martino announced today that he will not meet with officials from Misericordia University until they comply with his request for a public release of specific information on how the institution teaches Catholic morality regarding sexuality and homosexuality, and how it is adhering to the four essential characteristics of a Catholic institution of higher learning.

The Bishop, in two previous statements, has asked that this information be provided to Misericordia’s alumni and the public. He has requested that the school speak precisely, naming courses, content and even catalog numbers.

The university has thus far refused to do so, instead requesting a private meeting with the Bishop.

However, the scandal that led to the Bishop’s request was a public matter. Therefore, no meeting will be held unless Misericordia complies with the request for a public release of information.

The issue arose when Misericordia’s Diversity Institute hosted two public presentations by Keith Boykin. In at least one of his talks, he discussed advocacy for issues such as same sex marriage, and he addressed the intersection of religion and sexuality. The Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexual behavior was not presented at the event.

Bishop Martino stated his “absolute disapproval” of these events because the university was providing a public platform for a proponent of morality that is “disturbingly opposed to Catholic teaching.” The Bishop subsequently called on Misericordia to seriously consider dissolving the Diversity Institute.

Since Misericordia has asserted that it “is committed deeply to its Catholic mission,” Bishop Martino said it is puzzling that the school would not want to assure the public that it is teaching Catholic morality and adhering to the four essential characteristics of a Catholic institution of higher learning. As stated in Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities, these are:

1. A Christian inspiration not only of individuals but of the university community
as such;

2. A continuing reflection in the light of the Catholic faith upon the growing
treasury of human knowledge, to which it seeks to contribute by its own
research;

3. Fidelity to the Christian message as it comes to us through the Church;

4. An institutional commitment to the service of the people of God and of the
human family in their pilgrimage to the transcendent goal which gives meaning
to life.

Bishop Martino believes the kind of information he is seeking should be easy to compile and readily available.

Bishop Martino also explained his obligation to address these matters. A local bishop does not merely have a “personal position” (i.e., one which is no more valid than anyone else’s position) about the “Catholic identity” of a local Catholic college. Under the Church’s Code of Canon Law, the Bishop has a “responsibility” to evaluate and judge how all Catholic institutions in his diocese are upholding the principles of authentic Catholic identity.

In particular, it is his responsibility to ensure that institutions of higher learning which desire to call themselves Catholic are zealous in teaching Catholic faith and morals.

USCCB Head, Cardinal George meets with Obama; releases video

A meeting took place quietly between President Obama and Cardinal George. It was so private, that it never showed up on the President's schedule. It ran about 30 minutes. On the same day, Cardinal George released this video on the USCCB's website, urging people to contact the government over the conscience protection clause.

From LSN: Head of USCCB Meets with Obama: Also Releases Video Saying Decision on Conscience Protection a Move Towards "Despotism"

    By John Jalsevac

March 17, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - On the same day that Cardinal Francis George released a video expressing, on the behalf of all American bishops, his deep concern about the Obama administration's decision to rescind conscience protection regulations put in place by the Bush administration, he has met with President Obama at the White House.

News of the private, half-hour meeting between the two was only released late this afternoon. The meeting was not included in President Obama's daily schedule.

The statements from the White House and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) give few details about what the Cardinal and the President spoke about, although the timing of the release of the Cardinal's video may indicate that the conscience protection regulations were at the top of the agenda.

"The president and Cardinal George discussed a wide range of issues," stated the White House release, "including important opportunities for the government and the Catholic Church to continue their long-standing partnership to tackle some of the nation's most pressing challenges."

The statement from the USCCB said: "The meeting was private. Cardinal George and President Obama discussed the Catholic Church in the United States and its relation to the new administration."

Cardinal George, the president of the USCCB, taped the video released today after the Obama Administration announced in early March that it was rescinding the regulations which guarantee that health workers cannot be forced to provide services that violate their consciences, including abortions.

"As Catholic bishops and American citizens, we are deeply concerned that such an action on the government's part would be the first step in moving our country from democracy to despotism," says the Cardinal in the video.

"Respect for personal conscience and freedom of religion as such ensures our basic freedom from government oppression. No government should come between an individual person and God - that's what America is supposed to be about. This is the true common ground for us as Americans. We therefore need legal protection for freedom of conscience and of religion-including freedom for religious health care institutions to be true to themselves."

The Cardinal observed that the country respects conscientious objection in the case of those who object to war, "even though it's good to defend your country," and for physicians who do not want to participate in the death penalty.

"Why shouldn't our government and our legal system permit conscientious objection to a morally bad action, the killing of babies in their mother's womb?" he asks. "People understand what really happens in an abortion and in related procedures - a living member of the human family is killed - that's what it's all about - and no one should be forced by the government to act as though he or she were blind to this reality."

The Cardinal concluded by urging concerned citizens to contact the government and tell them to retain the conscience protection regulations: "I ask you please to let the government know that you want conscience protections to remain strongly in place. In particular, let the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington know that you stand for the protection of conscience, especially now for those who provide the health care services so necessary for a good society. "

A 30 day public comment period on the administration's decision to rescind the conscience protection regulations is currently underway. Comments may be submitted by email at proposedrescission@hhs.gov.

Pope Benedict to Congregation for Clergy: Priesthood without Discontinuity

Fr. Z has done a quick translation of an address given at the Congregation for the Clergy by Pope Benedict.

Some of this is almost jaw-dropping - not just because of what is acknowledged, but becaue of who is acknowledging it. These are things people have openly discussed in various circles in the Church (and in not a few quiet corners), but hearing it from the Pope is.....well....refreshing. He gets it. Now he's trying to help others to get it.

I'm using Fr. Z's original emphases in bold:

A grasp of the radical social changes of the last decades must move our better ecclesial energies to take care for the formation of candidates for ministry. In particular, it must stimulate constant solicitude of Pastors toward their first collaborators, either cultivating truly paternal human relations, or concerning themselves with their continuing formation, above all in the matter of doctrine. The mission has its roots in a special way in a good formation, developed in communion with the uninterrupted ecclesial Tradition, without breaks or temptations to discontinuity. In such a sense, it is important to foster in priests, above all in younger generations, a correct reception of the texts of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, interpreted in the light of the whole doctrinal train of of the Church. There appears to be an urgent need for the recovery of that awareness which drives priests to be present, identifiable and recognizable both for their judgment of faith, and for their personal virtue, and also for their dress (abito), in ambients of culture and of charity, which have ever been at the heart of the mission of the Church.

As a Church and as priests we proclaim Jesus of Nazareth is Lord and Christ, crucifed and risen, King of time and history, in the happy certainty that such a truth coincides with the deepest desires of man’s heart. In the ministry of the incarnation of the Word, in that fact that God became man like us, there is situated both the content and the method of the Christian message. The mission has here its true driving core: namely, in Jesus Christ. The centrality of Christ brings with itself the proper evaluation of the priestly ministry, without which there would be no Eucharist, nor, much less, the mission of the same Church. In this sense it is necessary to be vigilant that "new structures" or pastoral organizations are not considered for a time which one must "do without" ordained ministry, starting from the erroneous interpretation of a right promotion of the laity, for in such a case presuppositions would be advanced for the further dilution of the priestly ministry and the eventual presumed "solutions" would come dramatically to coincide with the real causes of the present challenges bound up with ministry.

Eucharistic Adoration for the Sanctification of Priests and Spiritual Maternity

I just attended, this past Saturday, the Holy Trinity Apostolate's 12th Annual Lenten Symposium.

I had a chance to speak very briefly with Fr. Christopher Nalty following his talk. He gave to me the booklet that he held up during his talk entitled, "Eucharistic Adoration for the Sanctification of Priests and Spiritual Maternity". He explained that the book is not being produced in the US in English by the Paulines, who have the rights, for whatever reason.

He provided an url where the material and stories he shared would be available online. I suggested I would offer the link here.

Go to clerus.org and choose your language. If you want English, click here.

In the meanwhile, you may want to contact the Paulines and let them know you are interested in purchasing a copy of the book. Perhaps sales were flat when they discontinued publication of it.

There are fascinating accounts in there on how prayer affected priests and bishops. Do read the online version for now.

EDIT: After you click Clerus.org, and then choose your language, simply click the pic in the lower left hand corner and it will take you to some downloadable PDF's.

Here is the page for the English version.

Archbishop Raymond L. Burke on Gov. Sebelius for HHS

Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, who now heads the Apostolic Signatura - the Church's highest court, has discussed the nomination of Missouri Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to lead the HHS. From Catholic News Agency:

San Diego, Calif., Mar 14, 2009 / 06:08 am (CNA).- Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ nomination as Secretary of Health and Human Services is "sad" and "the source of greatest embarrassment" because she has repeatedly betrayed her Catholic faith through her "well known" support for legal abortion, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke has commented.

The archbishop, formerly of St. Louis, Missouri, is now Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. His duties in that office include ensuring that the Church operates correctly under canon law.

In a written interview with Thomas J. McKenna of Catholic Action for Faith and Family, Archbishop Burke remarked that the governor’s nomination to President Barack Obama’s Cabinet "saddens me on several scores."

"First of all, it is sad for our nation to have a person who favors the right to kill the unborn in the womb placed in charge of the federal office with responsibility for health and human services. No matter how good Governor Sebelius’ record regarding other human life concerns may be, if she is not committed to the safeguarding of human life from its very inception, she should not be entrusted with the questions of health and human services for our nation."

As a Roman Catholic, Gov. Sebelius’ appointment is "the source of the greatest embarrassment because she has publicly and repeatedly betrayed her Catholic faith, in the most fundamental tenet in the most fundamental tenet of the moral law, that is, the law to safeguard and foster human life from the moment of its inception to the moment of natural death."

"Her position on the question of procured abortion is the source of the greatest scandal to Catholics and to all who uphold the natural moral law," he continued.

Additionally, Archbishop Burke said, the governor "obstinately remained in her moral error" despite being admonished by at least three of her bishops, including Archbishop of Kansas City Joseph Naumann.

He added that Archbishop Naumann had proceeded "in perfect accord" with canon law by trying to help Gov. Sebelius recognize and correct her "grave error."

"When she refused to do so, he had no choice but to remind her that the Church’s discipline requires that persons who publicly and obstinately remain in serious sin must be denied Holy Communion," he added.

"Archbishop Naumann acted with exemplary pastoral charity in the matter, protecting the Body and Blood of Christ from unworthy reception, preventing the governor from the commission of the most serious sin of sacrilege, and ending the great scandal caused by the governor’s unworthy reception of the Body and Blood of Christ," Archbishop Burke told Catholic Action for Faith and Family.

He said Archbishop Naumann was justified in his action, which also fulfilled "one of his most solemn duties as a pastor," that is, ensuring care of the Blessed Sacrament and the worthy reception of Holy Communion.

"He has spoken the truth with love. More than that cannot be asked of any shepherd of the flock," Archbishop Burke wrote.

Asked if other bishops in or near Washington, D.C. would be obliged to enforce Archbishop Naumann’s "sanction," Archbishop Burke explained that the Kansas City prelate did not impose a sanction but "simply made clear her canonical status in regards to the reception of Holy Communion anywhere."

"No Catholic who publicly and obstinately remains in serious sin can receive Holy Communion," he added.

Archbishop Naumann "only did what was his duty as Bishop" under canon law, Archbishop Burke remarked to Catholic Action for Faith and Family.

"Whether Governor Sebelius is in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, or in any other diocese, she should not present herself for Holy Communion because, after pastoral admonition, she obstinately persists in serious sin."

The Funeral of Fr. Val Rykowski

Fr. Val left Sts Cyril & Methodius in an old Packard Henney (I believe it is a 1948, but someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I didn't think I would get to attend the funeral of Fr. Val because I needed to get some things done at work with a deadline. I managed to get it all done Tuesday morning and decided to go to the Mass on Wednesday.

What follows are pictures I took, with Fr. Ben's permission, during the funeral Mass for our beloved Fr. Val Rykowski.

The main celebrant for the funeral Mass, was Fr. Jerry Rykowski, the brother of Fr. Val. There were about 25 priests and some 80 altar boys for the Mass. Fr. Ben Kosnac delivered the homily.

You have permission to copy/save photos to your computer in order to make prints, or for later viewing, etc. However, DO NOT copy them from this blogpost as they are low-resolution and will not look good when printed or made into photographs. Rather, go to my Smugmug gallery for the funeral and save from there. Sales of of my photos are prohibited.

Want to see many more photos from the funeral? Go to my Smugmug gallery. I believe prints can be ordered through Smugmug, which you are free to use. I get nothing from these purchases. Sales of my photos are prohibited. However, you may print them, save them to your computer, burn the to disk, make photographs, etc., for personal use.

Instructions for saving pics from Smugmug: Simply follow the link below. When you see a pic you want to copy to your computer, single-click it first. When it is isolated in a window on the right, place your cursor over to the far side and a pop-up menu with sizes will appear. I recommend choosing "Original", then do a right-click, "save as". You will get print resolution.

Go to my gallery for Fr. Val Rykowski's funeral to view all of the photos shown in this post, and many more.

Want to just see an online slideshow? Follow this link to a slideshow of Fr. Val's funeral with all pictures taken by me Wednesday. I recommend setting the speed to fast.

To read testimonials on Fr. Val's holiness, please see my original post: And, God loves you too Fr. Val. Feel free to contribute any time to the testimonials already there.

The Sts Cyril & Methodius webmaster, Rick, has made many updates to the parish website with everything from audio and video, to more photos and various links. Go visit Sts Cyril & Methodius homepage.

    Timeout needed...

UPDATE: My mother was released late yesterday and is home resting. I am burning a second vacation day to get some much needed rest. I fell asleep around 3:30am the night before and went back to the hospital at 7:00am after about a 3 hour nap, hoping to catch the doctor (sometimes the doctors do things with good intentions and cause more harm by taking away certain medicines, etc., so I work to head those things off). She was actually admitted for part of the day and the doctor came late and released her with her hemoglobin up at around 9.1 from a low of 6.1 when she first got in to ER.

My posting has slowed and will stop for a couple of days as I try to get my bearings. Much has been happening.

I went to Fr. Val's funeral today and when I got out had to take my mother in for bloodwork since she was not doing well. She suffers from anemia, caused by a variety of things (not uncommon for seniors) and needs period transfusions. Normally, we try to head things off at the pass and get it done outpatient. But, there is a fine line between taking her in when it is low enough, but not so low that she can't wait (at which time she ends up in ER, which is more complicated).

The doctor put a stat order on the bloodwork and he wanted me to go home and sit with her until he called me some hours later. I got the call just after 8:00pm to take her into ER. Her blood count slipped to 6.1 (normal is around 15, but for the conditions she has, doctors are happey when she is at 10.5 or so).

It's now approaching 3:00am and I just got in the door (my day started at work at around 5:45am). I'm heading back to the hospital at 7:00 so I can catch the doctor to speak with him.

I pray that after the two units she gets, she will be stable enough to come home. She may get a third unit if it does not get above 8.

Mom was looking so forward to going to the St. Joseph Day dinner to hear the Italian band and singers that always come. She is of Croatian descent, but grew up in an Italian neighborhood and is very much at home among them.

If her blood does not drop (indicating she has something else going on), then she will be released tomorrow. Typically after she is transfused, I can't keep up with her. The last time she had this done was on Election Day.

Your prayers for my mother, Rose, are appreciated. I'll be back blogging soon. I'm still keeping one eye on the news - often through my Sprint Centro, but simply cannot take time to blog on it.

    Fr. Val's viewing

    UPDATED:

The table at the entrance of the church, with personal items and other things to represent his priestly ministry. It was taken at around 5:45am, hours before priest would be brought back into the church to lay in state

The wake for Fr. Val Rykowski began yesterday. Fr. Ben Kosnac, the pastor, had been out of the country which is why there was roughly a one week delay.

I went to Mass in the morning and, after hearing about a beautiful display with Father's personal items, I took my camera and got some photos of it before the 6:00am Mass. Draped over the table at the entrance of the church was his trademark, Holy Trinity, stole. The table also had a crown of thorns, a bible, a chalice, paten and some other things.

Someone had encouraged me to come back and take pictures after Father was laying in state. I was uncomfortable with this, but knew from my time in Europe, that what is off-putting in one culture, is common in another. I spoke with Fr. Libor, the associate in the morning and he said it would be good to ask Fr. Ben who was expected back in the afternoon. He suggested I come back.

I left my camera equipment in the car when I went at 6:00pm and was going to let it go when I got a tap on the shoulder as I sat in the pew. It was Fr. Ben. He whispered to me that it was perfectly fine to take photos and that I should go up after the Rosary is done and let the ushers know I had his permission.

Among the pictures taken included a photo of Fr. Val's sister and brother - also a priest. They will get a set of photos before departing on the 25th.

Those photos taken with Fr. Val in state, will not be published on the internet. If there is a broad shot, I may run it past Fr. Ben. My intent was to simply put the photos on disk and to give them to a few key people at the parish to put away.

    Why?

Many people considered Fr. Val a living saint. He was a highly virtuous man, one with such a devotion to the Holy Trinity. He gave witness to the Eucharist by the tears which flowed down his face during consecration. He is responsible for many young men of the parish, and probably elsewhere, becoming priests. Even at 92, he was spiritual advisor to many right up until the end, and confessor to many more. Ordained on March 20, 1943, he died just 19 days short of his anniversary.

Further testimony to Father's sanctity is that the rectory was being inundated with requests for personal items of Fr. Val, including just a lock of hair. Upon entering the doors of the church after going through the vestibule, were baskets with Miraculous Medals. People were taking these, and other items they brought with them, to touch the hand of Fr. Val with. I myself had never witnessed this, but it is driven by the belief that the priest is already in heaven.

Fr. Val himself would tell us to pray for him. Our Catholic faith tells us we must do this out of charity, no matter how saintly we think someone is. However, prayers not needed by Fr. Val, are prayers he can give to the poor souls in purgatory he begged us all to pray for.

Fr. Val's Funeral - this Wednesday

Fr. Val (left) concelebrates a Novus Ordo Mass with Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC (center) and Fr. Matthew Hincks, ORC (right) in July 2008.

Visitation at SS Cyril and Methodius Church

    Monday March 9, and Tuesday, March 10 from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

    • Rosary at 7 PM both evenings

Visitation will also be on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 starting at 10:00 AM Until Funeral Mass at 12:00 Noon

    YOU REPORT ON THE FUNERAL

I will be making a post following the funeral - later that evening. I will open the combox for people to share their own experience at the funeral Mass, and if there are any photos of the crowds or other things, please email me at TeDeumBlog@gmail.com (please do not take pictures during Mass without permission from Fr. Ben. Most especially flash should not be used lest it draw attention away from God who should always be at the center of Mass. I myself do not take pictures in any parish without permission from the pastor).

I think it would be a good testimonial to show just how vast the crowd is. I understand that a nearby non-Catholic parish has offered it's parking lot to handle what is expected to be at least 1100 people for the funeral. Get pictures of people walking to Sts Cyril & Methodius, crowds in the Church, crowds at the luncheon (broadshots), the large number of priests expected, things like Fr. Val's beautiful Holy Trinity stole, etc.

I myself cannot make it and there are many people out of state with an interest in reading what you have to say about the funeral and see in pictures.

    Friday Fish Fry at Grotto

EDIT: There is NO FISH FRY on March 13th. It will resume the following Friday.

Support the parish fish fry which is open from 3:00pm until 7:00pm. Prices were dropped from last year, but I don't have the details with me at the moment. It is $5.00 for adults (two pieces of fish, cole slaw, fries, dinner roll and drink), $3.00 for children (one piece of fish, with sides), and for a family up to eight, $20.00 (2 adult meals and 6 kids meals).

Many people show up around 5:30 or so, eat, then head off to Mass at 7:00, followed by the Stations of the Cross. The nightly Mass can run as little as 30 minutes so keep that in mind when eating with regards to the Communion fast.

Saturday, March 7th: St. Monica Sodality Mass at 4:00pm.

Join the St. Monica Sodality at the 4:00pm Mass each first Saturday of the month. What is the St. Monica Sodality? From the St. Monica Sodality of Michigan website:

The Saint Monica Sodality of Michigan is an organization of Roman Catholics; clergy, religious and laity who, in imitation of St. Monica, persevere in hopeful prayer for the return of loved ones to the full practice of the Catholic Faith. We offer support, by prayer and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to those who have experienced the departure of loved ones from the faith. Through our practice of the faith that includes frequent reception of the Sacraments, and with all humility, we hope and trust in God that our words and actions will also inspire others to embrace Catholicism.

Get there early - perhaps 45 minutes before Mass and ask where you can add the names of your loved ones and friends to the list for the liturgy. There are also prayers before Mass and it is the best time for confession (Grotto is the confession capital of Metro Detroit)

Sunday, March 8: Baby Shower to Benefit Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Right to Life - Lifespan is having it's 20th annual Baby Shower to assist local pregnancy centers. New or used (but useable) baby or maternity items. Drop your gift off in the school inside the door. Or, checks can be made out for monetary donations, to Imago Dei (take in to the gift shop). Imago Dei - a local crisis pregnancy center is always looking for volunteers. Call tom or Faye at 313-372-8803.

Sunday, March 8: $1.00 Spaghetti Benefit Dinner and Talk by Michael Voris
Following the Noon Mass, Michael Voris of Real Catholic TV and the One True Faith will be giving a talk during a $1.00 spaghetti dinner. (Yeah - you read right - on dollar!). Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this Sunday.

March 14th, Lenten Symposium by Holy Trinity Apostolate

Ontario Bishop Says 'Early Induction' Policy at Catholic Hospital Under Vatican Review

Bishop says he may act before Rome review complete

    By John-Henry Westen

LONDON, ON, March 5, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) exposé on the practice of 'early inductions' on babies with lethal fetal anomaly at a Catholic hospital has resulted in the matter being reviewed by the Vatican. Today LifeSiteNews.com spoke with London Bishop Ronald Fabbro regarding the protocol at St. Joseph's Health Centre, which permits early inductions for such babies.

Bishop Fabbro informed LSN that he has launched an investigation into the practice at the hospital, in order to discover whether the guidelines are in synch with Catholic teaching. The matter has also been referred to the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith.

In addition, the Bishop said that while the review process might take quite some time, he "wasn't necessarily going to wait until all of this work had been done before I would be in a position to make changes to the guidelines the hospital is following now."

The procedure - "early induction" of unborn babies with "lethal fetal anomalies" - refers to artificially causing the child to be born prematurely at 21-24 weeks - earlier than any child could survive without extreme medical intervention. LSN previously established with the ethical overseer of the procedure, Fr. Michael Prieur, that the hospital does not provide such care for children with lethal fetal anomalies once induced. Therefore, the Catholic hospital was, according to the theologians and medical experts LSN consulted, directly causing the death of these children via "early induction."

Stupid MSM interview about Bishop Martino vs. Misericordia University

EDIT: Title correction (MSM was MSNBC - it appears to be originating from a mainstream CBS affiliate and MSNBC carried the story and a link to the video at the bottom).

I don't rant often, but this one got under my skin because it was utterly ridiculous.

Ask yourself this as you read my post and watch the video:

Should the mainstream media ask a panel of vegetarians to come in and comment on the best ways to cook different cuts of beef?

That is precisely what the secular media is doing in this video and in others I've seen on Catholic matters.

If you have been following my posts on all that is going on in Scranton, perhaps you might find it fitting to send His Excellency a Mass card. He needs the graces and would probably find such support comforting.

I suspect Bishop Martino does not concern himself with what the media thinks. It's a good thing because it doesn't make sense to cater to folks who not only do not understand the Catholic faith, but want to attack it. For 2000 years the Catholic Church has stood the test of time and has been clear and consistent. She has not given in to every wind of doctrine, nor has she changed with the times. Why? Because, "Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday, and forever" and the Church will not yield to all sorts of strange teachings promoted by the world.

There are many ways to distort news in order to sway public opinion. One of those ways is to have a forum with guests who all have the same mindset. Get it?

Watch this hack job of an interview about the corrections the Scranton bishop is trying to make at Misericordia University - a Catholic institution in his diocese. It is an unfortunately common occurrence in Catholic colleges that goes unchallenged in many dioceses - having speakers who promote that which is contrary to our faith under the guise of diversity. For the discussion they obviously sought out people who would be against the Catholic Church and Bishop Martino. Is it any wonder why he won't grant interviews?

Let's see....they had on an Episcopalian minister and the PSU Chancellor. They are qualified to speak with authority on internal Catholic matters how? What a joke! This is tabloid journalism at it's best.

Before we get to the video clip let me highlight a key point made by Bishop Martino in his press release that the secular press is either diluting or ignoring. You certainly don't hear them having reasonable dialogue on these points.

As Catholics, we must distinguish between authentic tolerance and an “anything goes” mindset. For example, would the Diversity Institute be justified in hosting a speaker who believes the Holocaust is a myth? Or one who believes slavery is okay because certain people are inferior? Or one who believes women can be exploited because they are the “weaker sex”? There are people out there who actually believe this nonsense, and they would be perfectly willing to come to the campus to tell you why.

Their views are certainly “diverse,” but does that qualify them to be given a platform in the name of tolerance? Or should they be allowed to make a presentation without any retort from the Catholic perspective?

Now, the video - if you can hold in your last meal through it....

Pope Benedict's Youth Day Message for 2009: A Must-Read for Everyone

While the Holy Father released this message for youth, it applies to us all. This is the year dedicated to St. Paul, the Apostle, and Pope Benedict weaves his writings throughout this address.

I have added some links, mainly for our Protestant brothers and sisters who may be reading, with explanations of commonly misunderstood Catholic practices and Sacraments.

    My dear friends,

Next Palm Sunday we shall celebrate the twenty-fourth World Youth Day at the diocesan level. As we prepare for this annual event, I recall with deep gratitude to the Lord the meeting held in Sydney in July last year. It was a most memorable encounter, during which the Holy Spirit renewed the lives of countless young people who had come together from all over the world. The joy of celebration and spiritual enthusiasm experienced during those few days was an eloquent sign of the presence of the Spirit of Christ. Now we are journeying towards the international gathering due to take place in Madrid in 2011, which will have as its theme the words of the Apostle Paul: "Rooted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith" (cf. Col 2:7). As we look forward to that global youth meeting, let us undertake a path of preparation together. We take as our text for the year 2009 a saying of Saint Paul: "We have set our hope on the living God" (1 Tim 4:10), while in 2010 we will reflect on the question put to Jesus by the rich young man: "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" (Mk 10:17)

    Youth, a time of hope

In Sydney, our attention was focussed upon what the Holy Spirit is saying to believers today, and in particular to you, my dear young people. During the closing Mass, I urged you to let yourselves be shaped by him in order to be messengers of divine love, capable of building a future of hope for all humanity. The question of hope is truly central to our lives as human beings and our mission as Christians, especially in these times. We are all aware of the need for hope, not just any kind of hope, but a firm and reliable hope, as I wanted to emphasize in the Encyclical Spe Salvi. Youth is a special time of hope because it looks to the future with a whole range of expectations. When we are young we cherish ideals, dreams and plans. Youth is the time when decisive choices concerning the rest of our lives come to fruition. Perhaps this is why it is the time of life when fundamental questions assert themselves strongly: Why am I here on earth? What is the meaning of life? What will my life be like? And again: How can I attain happiness? Why is there suffering, illness and death? What lies beyond death? These are questions that become insistent when we are faced with obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable: difficulties with studies, unemployment, family arguments, crises in friendships or in building good loving relationships, illness or disability, lack of adequate resources as a result of the present widespread economic and social crisis. We then ask ourselves: where can I obtain and how can I keep alive the flame of hope burning in my heart?

In search of "the great hope"

Experience shows that personal qualities and material goods are not enough to guarantee the hope which the human spirit is constantly seeking. As I wrote in the Encyclical Spe Salvi, politics, science, technology, economics and all other material resources are not of themselves sufficient to provide the great hope to which we all aspire. This hope "can only be God, who encompasses the whole of reality and who can bestow upon us what we, by ourselves, cannot attain" (no. 31). This is why one of the main consequences of ignoring God is the evident loss of direction that marks our societies, resulting in loneliness and violence, discontent and loss of confidence that can often lead to despair. The word of God issues a warning that is loud and clear: "Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes" (Jer 17:5-6).

The crisis of hope is more likely to affect the younger generations. In socio-cultural environments with few certainties, values or firm points of reference, they find themselves facing difficulties that seem beyond their strength. My dear young friends, I have in mind so many of your contemporaries who have been wounded by life. They often suffer from personal immaturity caused by dysfunctional family situations, by permissive and libertarian elements in their education, and by difficult and traumatic experience. For some – unfortunately a significant number – the almost unavoidable way out involves an alienating escape into dangerous and violent behaviour, dependence on drugs and alcohol, and many other such traps for the unwary. Yet, even for those who find themselves in difficult situations, having been led astray by bad role models, the desire for true love and authentic happiness is not extinguished. But how can we speak of this hope to those young people? We know that it is in God alone that a human person finds true fulfilment. The main task for us all is that of a new evangelization aimed at helping younger generations to rediscover the true face of God, who is Love. To you young people, who are in search of a firm hope, I address the very words that Saint Paul wrote to the persecuted Christians in Rome at that time: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Rom 15:13). During this Jubilee Year dedicated to the Apostle of the Gentiles on the occasion of the two thousandth anniversary of his birth, let us learn from him how to become credible witnesses of Christian hope.

    Saint Paul, witness of hope

When Paul found himself immersed in difficulties and trials of various kinds, he wrote to his faithful disciple Timothy: "We have set our hope on the living God" (1 Tim 4:10). How did this hope take root in him? In order to answer that question we must go back to his encounter with the Risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. At that time, Saul was a young person like you in his early twenties, a follower of the Law of Moses and determined to fight with every means, and even to kill those he regarded as God’s enemies (cf. Acts 9:1). While on his way to Damascus to arrest the followers of Christ, he was blinded by a mysterious light and he heard himself called by name: "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" He fell to the ground, and asked: "Who are you, Lord?" The reply came: "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting" (Acts 9:3-5). After that encounter, Paul’s life changed radically. He received Baptism and became an Apostle of the Gospel. On the road to Damascus, he was inwardly transformed by the Divine Love he had met in the person of Jesus Christ. He would later write: "The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Gal 2:20). From being a persecutor, he became a witness and a missionary. He founded Christian communities in Asia Minor and Greece, and travelled thousands of miles amid all kinds of perils, culminating in his martyrdom in Rome. All this for love of Christ.

The great hope is in Christ

For Paul, hope is not simply an ideal or sentiment, but a living person: Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Profoundly imbued with this certainty, he could write to Timothy: "We have set our hope on the living God" (1 Tim 4:10). The "living God" is the Risen Christ present in our world. He is the true hope: the Christ who lives with us and in us and who calls us to share in his eternal life. If we are not alone, if he is with us, even more, if he is our present and our future, why be afraid? A Christian’s hope is therefore to desire "the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1817).

The way towards the great hope

Just as he once encountered the young Paul, Jesus also wants to encounter each one of you, my dear young people. Indeed, even before we desire it, such an encounter is ardently desired by Jesus Christ. But perhaps some of you might ask me: How can I meet him today? Or rather, in what way does he approach me? The Church teaches us that the desire to encounter the Lord is already a fruit of his grace. When we express our faith in prayer, we find him even in times of darkness because he offers himself to us. Persevering prayer opens the heart to receive him, as Saint Augustine explains: "Our Lord and God … wants our desire to be exercised in prayer, thus enabling us to grasp what he is preparing to give" (Letter 130:8,17). Prayer is the gift of the Spirit that makes us men and women of hope, and our prayer keeps the world open to God (cf. Spe Salvi, 34).

Make space for prayer in your lives! To pray alone is good, although it is even more beautiful and fruitful to pray together, because the Lord assured us he would be present wherever two or three are gathered in his name (cf. Mt 18:20). There are many ways to become acquainted with him. There are experiences, groups and movements, encounters and courses in which to learn to pray and thus grow in the experience of faith. Take part in your parish liturgies and be abundantly nourished by the word of God and your active participation in the Sacraments. As you know, the summit and centre of the life and mission of every believer and every Christian community is the Eucharist, the sacrament of salvation in which Christ becomes present and gives his Body and Blood as spiritual food for eternal life. A truly ineffable mystery! It is around the Eucharist that the Church comes to birth and grows – that great family of Christians which we enter through Baptism, and in which we are constantly renewed through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The baptised, through Confirmation, are then confirmed in the Holy Spirit so as to live as authentic friends and witnesses of Christ. The Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony enable them to accomplish their apostolic duties in the Church and in the world. Finally, the Sacrament of the Sick grants us an experience of divine consolation in illness and suffering.

Acting in accordance with Christian hope

If you find your sustenance in Christ, my dear young people, and if you live profoundly in him as did the Apostle Paul, you will not be able to resist speaking about him and making him known and loved by many of your friends and contemporaries. Be his faithful disciples, and in that way you will be able to help form Christian communities that are filled with love, like those described in the Acts of the Apostles. The Church depends on you for this demanding mission. Do not be discouraged by the difficulties and trials you encounter. Be patient and persevering so as to overcome the natural youthful tendency to rush ahead and to want everything immediately.

My dear friends, follow the example of Paul and be witnesses to the Risen Christ! Make Christ known, among your own age group and beyond, to those who are in search of "the great hope" that would give meaning to their lives. If Jesus has become your hope, communicate this to others with your joy and your spiritual, apostolic and social engagement. Let Christ dwell within you, and having placed all your faith and trust in him, spread this hope around you. Make choices that demonstrate your faith. Show that you understand the risks of idolizing money, material goods, career and success, and do not allow yourselves to be attracted by these false illusions. Do not yield to the rationale of selfish interests. Cultivate love of neighbour and try to put yourselves and your human talents and professional abilities at the service of the common good and of truth, always prepared to "make your defence to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that in you" (1 Pet 3:15). True Christians are never sad, even if they have to face trials of various kinds, because the presence of Jesus is the secret of their joy and peace.

    Mary, Mother of hope

May Saint Paul be your example on this path of apostolic life. He nourished his life of constant faith and hope by looking to Abraham, of whom he wrote in the Letter to the Romans: "Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become the father of many nations" (Rom 4:18). Following in the footsteps of the people of hope – composed of prophets and saints of every age – we continue to advance towards the fulfilment of the Kingdom, and on this spiritual path we are accompanied by the Virgin Mary, Mother of Hope. She who incarnated the hope of Israel, who gave the world its Saviour, and who remained at the foot of the Cross with steadfast hope, is our model and our support. Most of all, Mary intercedes for us and leads us through the darkness of our trials to the radiant dawn of an encounter with the Risen Christ. I would like to conclude this message, my dear young friends, with a beautiful and well-known prayer by Saint Bernard that was inspired by one of Mary’s titles, Stella Maris, Star of the Sea: "You who amid the constant upheavals of this life find yourself more often tossed about by storms than standing on firm ground, do not turn your eyes from the brightness of this Star, if you would not be overwhelmed by boisterous waves. If the winds of temptations rise, if you fall among the rocks of tribulations, look up at the Star, call on Mary … In dangers, in distress, in perplexities, think on Mary, call on Mary … Following her, you will never go astray; when you implore her aid, you will never yield to despair; thinking on her, you will not err; under her patronage you will never wander; beneath her protection you will not fear; she being your guide, you will not weary; with her assistance, you will arrive safely in the port" (Homilies in Praise of the Virgin Mother, 2:17).

Mary, Star of the Sea, we ask you to guide the young people of the whole world to an encounter with your Divine Son Jesus. Be the celestial guardian of their fidelity to the Gospel and of their hope.

Dear young friends, be assured that I remember all of you every day in my prayers. I give my heartfelt blessing to you and to all who are dear to you.

Pope Benedict: Parish life can't be just fun and games

Pope Benedict with an interesting comment to pastors on parish life:

He asserted, "A parish in which only games are played and drinks are shared would be absolutely superfluous."

"The meaning of a parish," he emphasized, should be "the cultural, human and Christian formation" of each personality, helping each person achieve maturity.

    [snip]

Faith must be at the heart of all cultural formation, he affirmed, "to know the face of God, which has been shown to us in Christ and thus to have the orientation point for the rest of culture, which otherwise is disoriented and becomes disorienting."

He added: "A culture without personal knowledge of God, and without knowledge of the face of God in Christ, is a culture that could even be destructive, because it does not know the necessary ethical guidelines.

"In this sense, I believe, we really have a mission of profound cultural and human formation, which opens to all the riches of the culture of our time, but which gives the criterion, the discernment to test what is true culture and what could become anti-cultural."

LifeNews: Senate Defeats Pro-Life Amdt to Stop Funding UNFPA-ForcedAbortions

Washington, DC -- The Senate on Thursday rejected an amendmentthat would have stopped the sending of taxpayer funds to theUnited Nations Population Fund. That's the UN agency that hasbeen found to have supported the Chinese population control program that relies on forced abortions and sterilizations.

The Senate voted 55-39 against the amendment, with a handful ofDemocrats joining most Republicans in voting pro-life for it.

Full story, voting record, and action alert at LifeNews

I'm sure someone is working on a list of Catholic politicians who voted against this. What is so sickening about this to me is the problem highlighted in China. Abortions are being forced, often violently and our tax dollars will be funding it.

    WHERE ARE THE FEMINISTS????

Oh, I forgot....they were busy voting the for the oppression and abuse of women and babies in other countries.

    Archbishop Naumann's Column on Sebelius

Soon after entering a post with a link to an OSV interview of Archbishop Naumann over Gov. Sebelius as Obama's HHS pick, I found the archbishop's column at the Catholic Key on the same topic: Sebelius (H/T Curt Jester)

OSV Interview: Archbishop Naumann speaks on Sebelius

There is a good interview at Our Sunday Visitor online. It was conducted by Valerie Schmalz with Archbishop Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas - the home state of Obama's new HHS pick.

Here is the lead-in to the interview, which you can pick up in full at OSV.

Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City counts among his flock Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Catholic and a strong supporter of abortion rights, who was just tapped by President Obama to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

The archbishop last year publicly asked her to not receive Communion until she changed her views and made a sincere sacramental confession.

In an interview with OSV this morning, he disclosed some of the back story to his decision, said that claims by a Catholic group that she is actually pro-life are "very, very dishonest," described the process — on a case-by-case basis — bishops need to take with a pro-choice politician in their jurisdiction, and reacted to pro-life Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback's warm reception of Sebelius' nomination.

Scranton's Bishop Martino Speaks Out on Misericordia University - Again!

I also offer this postscript to those who criticize me for taking public stances that may not be popular or “politically correct,” or may not agree with their own personal notions of what “progressive” Catholic doctrine should be. My job as a Bishop is to promulgate the authentic teaching of the Catholic Church to all the faithful. I will continue to do so. - Bishop Joseph Martino, March 3, 2009
[UPDATED AT 9:34PM, March 4, with statement from Misericordia University, found below the bishop's statement]

The chief shepherd of the Scranton Diocese, Bishop Joseph Martino, has again fired a shot across the bow of Misericordia University where a gay marriage activist, Keith Boykin, spoke at the invitation of the school's "Diversity Institute".

It's interesting to review the actual press release, uploaded sometime late yesterday, and what the secular press is sharing with it's readers. I'll highlight an example below Bishop Martino's statement.

As always: Empahses in bold mine; comments bracketed in red, I call extra attention to one paragraph in blue.

Bishop Issues Reflection on Teaching of Diversity and Tolerance

Bishop Joseph F. Martino has issued a reflection on how the teaching of diversity and tolerance relates to the teaching of the Catholic Church. The reflection follows:

A substantial amount of media coverage and public commentary ensued after I asked Misericordia University to seriously consider discontinuing its Diversity Institute. Students and others in the community related how this Institute has furthered the advancement of tolerance, understanding and harmony between people of different races and cultures.

These are all worthy goals. All people of good will should work toward these ends.

Misericordia University, as a Catholic institution, has a responsibility for helping the community achieve these goals. However, precisely because it is a Catholic institution, it also has a responsibility to transmit Catholic teaching to its students in ways that are not ambiguous or confusing.

As I said in my previous statement, students should learn respect for all races and cultures, but viewpoints that are in direct opposition to Catholic teaching should not be presented under the guise of “diversity.” [great way to explain it]. Doing so within a formal structure sanctioned by the institution gives the impression that these viewpoints are acceptable, or that all morality is relative. [Bingo! And, it is scandal when otherwise ignorant or uncatechized people accept it as good and true since it is coming from an institute of higher learning with the name "Catholic" attached to it!]

As Catholics, we believe there is an objective, moral Truth – given to us by Jesus Christ. This Truth is timeless, and it cannot be altered by the shifting tides of popular culture [Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever]. If our faith and our actions are not rooted in this Truth, we risk contributing to the “dictatorship of relativism” cited by then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in a homily given just prior to his election as Pope Benedict XVI. He said:
“To have a clear faith, according to the creed of the Church, is often labeled as fundamentalism. While relativism, that is, allowing oneself to be carried about with every wind of ‘doctrine,’ seems to be the attitude that is fashionable. A dictatorship of relativism is being constituted that recognizes nothing as absolute and which only leaves the ‘I’ and its whims as the ultimate measure.”

As the Bishop, it is not only my right, but my obligation to ensure that authentic Catholic teaching is being provided in all Catholic institutions in this Diocese, and that viewpoints in opposition to this teaching are not being presented as acceptable alternatives.

I voiced my “absolute disapproval” of Misericordia’s hosting of Keith Boykin not because of his sexual orientation, but because he is a well known proponent of morality that is disturbingly opposed to Catholic teaching, such as homosexual relations and same sex marriage. Furthermore, no presentation was made to balance Mr. Boykin’s viewpoints with the teaching of the Catholic Church.

That is why I asked Misericordia, which asserted that it “is committed deeply to its Catholic mission,” to convey how it teaches Catholic morality regarding sexuality and homosexuality, and to produce concrete evidence. It is regrettable that the University chose to respond with a brief statement without any such evidence.

Nevertheless, I continue to urge Misericordia University to fulfill the four essential characteristics of a Catholic institution of higher learning. As I pointed out in briefer form in my initial statement on this matter, these are:

    1. A Christian inspiration not only of individuals but of the university community as such;

    2. A continuing reflection in the light of the Catholic faith upon the growing treasury of human knowledge, to which it seeks to contribute by its own research;

    3. Fidelity to the Christian message as it comes to us through the Church;

    4. An institutional commitment to the service of the people of God and of the human family in their pilgrimage to the transcendent goal which gives meaning to life.

(Pope John Paul II, Apostolic Constitution on Catholic
    Universities
    )

Ok, now re-highlighting that paragraph in blue, that was so compelling and clear, lets pull it out again so we can compare it to an article that appeared in the Northern, Pennsylvania Times-Leader today. Here is Bishop Martino again...

Ok, now what did the Times-Leader convey to people? (don't blink)

Martino offered hypothetical situations in which the institute brings in speakers who say the Holocaust is myth or slavery is OK, then asked, “Their views are certainly ‘diverse,’ but does that qualify them to be given a platform in the name of tolerance?

Yeah, thanks. That really explains it. Sorry if I don't see the same impact. Hopefully, those in the area will consult the diocesan website for the bishop's full statement.

    MISERICORDIA RESPONDS:

    Misericordia University statement
    03-3-09

Misericordia University releases the following statement in response to Bishop Martino's comments on Tuesday, March 3:

Misericordia University is working diligently to schedule a meeting with the Bishop and his delegates so dialogue can be established among representatives of our founders and sponsors, the Religious Sisters of Mercy, university administrators, members of the Board of Trustees and the Diocese. [wouldn't you love to be a fly on that wall. Hey - I could handle being a dust mite for a few hours]

Misericordia University respects the Bishop’s position. [Notice the lack of a "but" here. It ends with a period]. The University looks forward to resolving these concerns directly with Bishop Martino. [In other words, they have learned reasonably well that it is not a good idea to answer him through a local newspaper]

[Here comes the damage control] Founded and Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy in 1924, Misericordia University is Luzerne County’s first four-year college and offers 31 academic majors on the graduate and undergraduate levels in full and part-time formats.

In all seriousness, pray for the archbishop in his efforts to correct the situation there. Let's hope other bishops follow his lead. If the head honchos at Misericordia have an ounce of smarts, they will tell the press, "no comment" and take it offline with him.

Judie Brown on Senator Brownback: I"ll never use "pro-life" to describe him again

The pro-life movement waited and wondered on which side of the fence Senator Sam Brownback would land....well, it was the wrong side.

By Kathleen Gilbert and Steve Jalsevac

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 3, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Kansas' U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, who has long identified with the pro-life movement, has shocked pro-life leaders by supporting the nomination of extreme pro-abortion Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Brownback issued a joint statement with fellow senator from Kansas, Pat Roberts, congratulating the Governor.

"It's an honor for the State of Kansas to have an elected official appointed to the president's cabinet," stated the senators. "We are hopeful Governor Sebelius will be a voice for Kansas and rural America at the Department. We look forward to working with her on issues important to the state including a National Cancer Institute Designation at the University of Kansas Cancer Center."

The pro-life community across America has almost unanimously spoken out against the nomination of Sebelius, whom Planned Parenthood once called a "champion" of their cause. Sebelius has fought consistently against legal protection for the unborn, so much so that her bishop, Catholic Archbishop Joseph Naumann, publicly admonished the governor to refrain from Holy Communion.

Pro-life activists widely consider Sebelius a particularly inflammatory candidate because of her association with Kansas' infamous late-term abortionist George Tiller. Sebelius has frequently pursued abortion policy in accord with ProKanDo, the political action committee headed by Tiller. Tiller himself has reportedly also contributed tens of thousands of dollars to Sebelius campaigns.

American Life League President Judie Brown told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) that she was greatly disappointed in Sen. Brownback, whose presidential nomination campaign last year she had avidly supported.

"I think we've just lost pro-life leadership in the U.S. Senate, and it's a tragedy," said Brown.

"I'll never use 'pro-life' to describe him again. People have just lost their moral compass - which means Obama's winning."

Popular pro-life blogger Jill Stanek lamented the damage sustained to pro-life efforts by the senator's welcome.

"Their [the KS Senators'] support will give squishy Republicans cover to vote for her appointment and make it difficult for pro-life Republicans to oppose it," wrote Stanek. She pointed to news sources and liberal blogs that agreed Brownback's support cleared the way for the Senate to welcome Sebelius, and gave the pick a "bi-partisan" stamp.

Bishop Martino of Scranton and the Media

    video

Above is an interesting video to watch from a local news station there in Scranton, PA. Note the slant making it look like Bishop Martino is "attacking". At the end, the reporter indicates that Bishop Martino did not return their calls or declined to be interviewed.

Bishop Martino does not grant many interviews, even with reputable Catholic media sources. He did grant one to Raymond Arroyo of EWTN during the Bishops conference in November, but that's the last that I recall. He seems to communicate exclusively through press releases.

I think this is actually prudent given the secular media's propensity for selectively picking out a good sounbite in such a way as to throw something out of context. Think about it.....by just making statements through his website in the form of press releases, it is there for all to see. However, if he grants an interview to a loyal Catholic media outlet, the secular press will pick and choose from that as well. No matter how you slice it, by just offering press releases while he is in the midst of a very tough series of battles in Scranton, it's that much more difficult to distort his words.

I also think there is reluctance to speak about an individual on the receiving end of ecclesiastical discipline as it is ongoing. This goes to the dignity of the person even if you don't think he is entitled to it.

Senator Casey's Spokesman: Vote against Martinez Amendment did not conflict with pro-life views

This is the first response we are seeing out of Senator Robert Casey Jr.'s office since Bishop Martino published his second open letter to the politician on February 26th.

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Robert Casey Jr.’s office told CNSNews.com on Monday that the Pennsylvania Democrat’s vote against an amendment that would have revived the Mexico City Policy did not conflict with his pro-life views.

    [snip]

Casey campaigned in 2006 as a pro-life Democrat. His father, Gov. Robert Casey, was well known for breaking with the party over the
abortion issue and was publicly shunned by the national Democratic Party.

Casey’s vote against extending the Mexico City policy is not in contradiction to his Catholic or pro-life principles, said Smar [Larry Smar is Casey's spokesman].

“In accordance with his pro-life views, Senator Casey voted recently to rescind Mexico City Policy, thus allowing U.S. funding of family planning services to international aid organizations,” Smar told CNSNews.com.

    [snip]

Smar said the vote was for family planning services abroad, not abortion.

But the diocese letter to Casey last week charged that Casey’s office “continually misrepresented” the vote. “The Mexico City Policy is, first and foremost, about abortion, not about family planning,” Bishop Martino wrote.

Stay tuned....and don't forget to pray for the conversion of Catholic politicians.

While you are at it, pray for our bishops. As interesting as it all is to read, this is a very heavy cross for any bishop to carry.

Guest Homily by Fr. William Kuchinsky: What should I say? What would you like me to say?

This homily was delivered on January 25 by Fr. William Kuchinsky, pastor of Our Lady of Grace in Romney, WV. It is reprinted here with Father's permission.

Hang on, dear readers! This homily contains language that some would like you to believe was banned by Vatican II. If you don't have time to read this now, bookmark it and come back to it.

I like Judie Brown's idea. When you are done reading it, consider sending a copy of it to Pope Benedict XVI with a little note that we would like men like Fr. Kuchinsky considered for bishop. Follow the link and scroll to the bottom for a "print-icon" and the Holy Father's address when done.
Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed . . .”

What should I say? What would you like me to say?

Would you like me to say that God is unaware and unconcerned that a president would sign an executive order so that, with the stroke of a pen, taxpayer money now will be used to kill babies in the womb; and your money and mine is now to be used to promote the evil of abortion throughout the world? Do you want me to tell you that the Word of God does not say the shedding of innocent blood cries out to Heaven for vengeance? It does. I cannot change that. I cannot withhold His warning.

The president promised to do this and yet many voted for him. Would you be more comfortable if I said such people are not at all complicit in the evil that has already been advanced?

When the good Lord was leading me into the priesthood, I understood something that struck me with fear. The more I immersed myself in God’s Holy Word the more knowledge I gained: His word was demanding. The closer I drew to Him, the more responsible I had to be: Because in coming to know more fully His just commands, His loving teaching, the more responsible I was to conform myself to Him. Each step forward meant I could not turn back. I felt the demands, I knew I was a sinner, I knew well the discipleship was a challenge and a burden—although a sweet one.

Archbishop Chaput said, “Most of us treat the Church the same way we treat our flesh-and-blood mothers . . . we don’t want her advice, especially when it interferes with our comfort.” I knew that if I were called to be a priest, I would have to preach the Word that had “convicted” me and in its loving challenge engaged me in the struggle to do God’s will: it was at times “uncomfortable.” It was a fearful thing to struggle with the realization that I was now called to proclaim a message to others, which would make them “uncomfortable.” I knew very early on, almost as if by instinct, that to be a priest would mean to be crucified with Christ.

In reality, all of us, by virtue of our baptism, share in the “common priesthood of believers.” Each of us are to be “crucified to ourselves” and to the world. Each of us, as proper to our common priesthood, offers prayers and sacrifices. Many of us have perhaps come to realize that Our Blessed Lord was telling the truth when He said we would be persecuted. ["The servant is not greater than his Master. If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you also"]

I long ago decided, in view of struggles I had in accepting what the Lord seemed to be calling me to, that if I became a religious priest (I’m a secular priest, not a part of a religious order) I would take the name of “Israel” – “one who wrestles with God.” But, standing here, I am glad to say that in my wrestling matches with the Almighty that it is good He always wins.

So now, after resisting the Lord, I have been “spit out” here in Romney as Jonah was from the belly of the whale. Don’t get me wrong: I like it here, I love you, you are good people.

But, what would you like me to say to those young men and women (maybe even older men and women) who exercise particular actions that are only proper to marriage? That it is okay? Should I comfort them by saying “God understands?” Yes, He understands. He understands our weakness.

He knows the power of that drive within us and how emotions can come to cloud reason; and that after the fall of man we now are faced with disordered passions which can cause us to act in a manner not in keeping with our dignity as human beings: and all the more so in our dignity as Christians.

Last week we heard from the Letter to the Corinthians: “But the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord: and the Lord for the body. Now God hath raised up the Lord and will raise us up also by his power. Know you not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid! Or know you not that he who is joined to a harlot is made one body? For they shall be, saith he, two in one flesh. But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doth is without the body: but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.”

Would you like to hear from me that God’s Holy and inerrant Word no longer applies? Should I tell you that St. Paul was just an old fuddy-duddy who didn’t really understand human nature? Would you like to hear me argue that we’ve come a long way since then and that the Church is just locked into an outmoded and archaic morality?

    I cannot do so.

And then there are those who, contrary to the teaching of Christ, decide to move in with each other and “play house.” When they come to know the heartbreak and tears that will likely arrive: am I to console them that there is nothing to learn from the pain of a broken heart and that the tears are just some strange thing that happens and are not because of the wound of their sins? Sin equals tears.

I cannot judge (so as to condemn) those who fornicate: but we can judge the behavior to be sinful. Only God knows the heart: but there is a Heaven and there is a hell. The Good Lord wants us to go to Heaven: that is why He teaches us what we in our passions might not see: It is not “okay” to have sex outside of marriage.

Now the homosexual agenda is being advanced from the highest office in our land. Even before the day of the presidential inauguration ended, the White House’s policies were posted on their web site showing it will continued to be advanced, even accelerated. Just as was promised us in the campaign.

We can love the homosexual. We can hug a daughter or son afflicted with this disorder, we can walk hand and hand with them along the way. We can comfort them as they lay dying from AIDS when family, “lovers,” and friends have deserted them . . . I worked with such dying, and I know that pretty much the only love shown them was by the strangers attending them in their hour of need.

But we cannot approve of their behavior. We cannot as a nation, condone so-called “homosexual marriage” or “unions.” We cannot call “blessed” what God has pronounced an abomination. What is the fruit of such so-called “love”? Where is the natural “complementarity” that exists between a woman and a man? We cannot allow them to visit our homes to spend the night under our roof as we would a husband and wife. We cannot do so any more than a mother and father would allow a daughter’s boyfriend to spend the night with her at home in the same room. It is not love to encourage or lead others to believe that sinful acts are permissible or acceptable.

Would you like me to say that unnatural sex acts do not “cry to Heaven for vengeance?” They do. The Bible clearly states this, the catechetical tradition of the Church retains the teaching . . . I cannot suspend the natural law or change God’s Word anymore than I can change the laws of gravity.

When I was growing up, it was a general rule that when my brother and I heard Mrs. Deal whistle down the street for her sons to come home in the evening we were to go home also, or that certainly when the street lamps came on we were to be in the house under threat of spending the night on the front porch. My folks would ask where I was going, who I was playing with. Would you like me to say that it is okay for you as a mother and father to allow your young sons and daughters unfettered access to the internet, with all the dangers and smut that lurks there?

Should I tell you it is a good thing that you have cable television to “baby sit” the kids while they sit hour after hour taking in the slim oozing out of the screen? Or, that it is okay they remain in front of that “tabernacle” of glass and plastic devoted to viewing as if in worship – while they are never encouraged to sit before Lord of love who remains unvisited, un-thought of, unloved, in the tabernacles of Catholic Churches throughout the world?

I know some parents might not know what their children are exposed to. It is hard to believe how bad things have gotten, so please take an objective look (you may well be horrified). Please check it out, just like my mom and dad would ask where I was going and would “keep tabs” on whom I hung out with. Don’t let your children hang out with an evil gang: with a media which seeks to “own” them.

Would you like me not to remind you of the words of Our Lord Jesus who said: “Whoever leads one of these little ones astray, it would be better if he had a millstone tied around his neck and be cast into the sea?” These children have been entrusted to you by God. He desires that you help Him bring them to that true home in Heaven He has prepared for us.

“I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out.” [1 Corinthians 7:29]

Would you be more comfortable if I mentioned nothing of married couples using artificial contraception? Should I proclaim it “wise” for any of us mere mortals to tinker with a force that lies at the heart of the marital relationship? One that contains within it the same power that has called whole universes into existence. Would you be at ease if it weren’t pointed out, among other things, that the use of such things can more deeply wound the fallen tendency in the man in such a way that he comes to view his wife as little more than an object of gratification? Should I point out that by rejecting natural family planning, a husband can lose that discipline that could help him to more and more view his wife as an equal partner and one who possesses an inherent dignity, which is to be always honored and reverenced? Would it be a welcomed message that you are reminded that the good Lord is not indifferent to the tears and utter brokenness of the children who find themselves victims of a marriage that lies tattered because the spouses failed to listen to their good mother, the Church?

Jesus proclaimed, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Am I to tell you “don’t worry, be happy?” Would it be helpful to you if I were to say “not to worry” – it might be another 2,000 years until we are all called to account for what we have done and what we have failed to do? I cannot do that. We need to change, we need to repent. “The Kingdom of God is at hand.”

I am a sinner. I continue to struggle to conform my mind and my heart to Jesus, and to the teaching of His Church. I have enough to be concerned about in facing the judgment of the Lord. I might fail in many things, but I cannot fail in my duty to proclaim the fullness of the Gospel from this pulpit.

Would you be more at ease if I were to say that it is all right for a person who is conscious of committing a serious sin to dare come to this altar to receive the Lord in Holy Communion? Here, at this altar the Lord comes to us, the Lord before whom the angels and saints bow down with awe in worship singing, “Holy, Holy, Holy!” While the devil and the demons shudder and flee in horror…

Would you like me to tell you that it is acceptable for even good Catholics who are not in serious sin and are free to receive the body and blood of Christ to not try to summon with all the powers of their minds and hearts the reality that it is Jesus we approach here. We are weak, the good Lord knows this, but I cannot tell you that it is a good thing that we allow ourselves to receive Him mindlessly without even trying to muster within our hearts at least a “thank you” for the bread from Heaven that has been given to us.

Are we to give up the fight for our souls even as it seems we may have already surrendered our beloved land? I don’t think so. Please God, that will never happen!

Need confession? Good. It's lent. Repent and sin no more. God loves you, but love Him back by following His laws. Vatican II didn't ban the 10 Commandments either.

The USCCB's Perfect Storm: So-called Catholic politicians, educators, and journalists

If you were out in boat as three storms were about to converge over you, would you not drop to your knees and pray?

There are many attacks on the Catholic Church today. Groups of so-called Catholics are working in concert to generate a perfect storm for our bishops.

The consciences of these so-called Catholics are either uninformed or malformed, or their intellect has been clouded through their own sinful desires and actions.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. But, this group would have us believe that Jesus is ever changing with the world over time. They advance "all sorts of strange teachings" (Heb 13:9) working to convince us that truth is something which can be designed by our own desires. They are undermining our bishops, feeding the media "doctrines" that are completely foreign to clear and consistent teachings. They take what is simple and make it complex so as to confuse the flock.

It amounts to "designer-morality" yet these people do not realize that the Church is not like Burger King where you get to "have it your way". They hold virtue as a vice, and value the ways of the world. Being politically correct is of great importance, even if it means being morally incorrect.

Is it any wonder why certain segments of the Church have been indifferent or even hostile toward's the Blessed Virgin Mary? She was a model of humility and obedience. Christ was obedient unto death, death on a cross? Perhaps that is why some so-called Catholics have made every effort to eliminate the cross not only from our parishes, but from or consciences.

The bishops have their work cut out for them. Pray for them. Pray that they:
"...proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. " (2 Timothy 4:2-4)
Do we need any further evidence that the time is here?

R.I.P.: Fr. Val Rykowski 1916-2009....And, God loves you too, Fr. Val

Fr. Val concelebrating Holy Mass with Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC when the auxiliary bishop of Karaganda, Kazakhstan and author of Dominus Est, visited St. Cyril & Methodius in July 2008

UPDATE - March 5, 2009: Consider bookmarking this post and revisiting it daily. Comments are dropping in with some amazing "Fr. Val" stories. Perhaps you have one to contribute. Moderation most often happens in the evening, so don't be discouraged if you don't see your comment right away.

I learned at Grotto's 6:30am Mass this morning of the passing of Fr. Val Rykowski, once called the Archdiocese of Detroit's version of the Energizer Bunny. Anyone who came into contact with the holy, elderly priest could see his great love for God and his holiness. But, Fr. Val himself would admonish us all to pray for the repose of his soul, no matter how saintly we considered him.

This holy priest, who exemplified the love of Christ, died with his boots on. He pushed himself at times to help in whatever way he could right up until the end. He continuously reminded us just how much God loved us.

Well done, faithful servant, well done. And, God loves you too!

I must get off to work, but would like to share one thing that I remember most about Fr. Val: His love for the Holy Eucharist. I use to go to the 6:00am Mass at Sts Cyril & Methodius, before Grotto began the 6:30am daily weekday liturgy. Fr. Val spent his final years at Sts C & M and whenever he said Mass, I could not keep myself from crying as I saw tears streaming down Father's face during the Consecration. I don't think I have ever seen him not get all choked up during the Consecration. It was a testimony to the Real Presence for me and he witnessed this fact well. A powerful, gentle lesson from a holy priest.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and stories of Fr. Val in the combox here. I will moderate comments before and after work, so it may take some time before you see you comment.

Also keep in your prayers, the priests and people who were so close to Fr. Val at Sts Cyril & Methodius in Sterling Heights and in the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Check the Sts Cyril & Methodius homepage for details and arrangements.

EDIT: The viewing and funeral have been delayed because the pastor, Fr. Ben, is out of the country. Viewing will be Monday the 9th, and Tuesday, with the funeral at Noon Wednesday. See more details in the link directly above.

Fr. Val speaking at the August 13, 2007 Fatima Devotion at Assumption Grotto

Fr. Val was known to plead with people to pray the Fatima Angel's Prayer:

MOST HOLY TRINITY, I adore you! My God, My God, I love You in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

MY GOD, I believe, I adore, I trust, and I love Thee! I ask pardon for for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not trust and do not love Thee.

Requiescat in pace, faithful son of the Church!
