Archdiocese of Detroit: Requiescat in pace, Rev Richard Lewnau, 35

Early this afternoon, I received a press release from the Archdiocese of Detroit about a 35 year old priest, Rev. Richard Lewnau was killed in a tragic accident yesterday.  He was pastor of  Sacred Heart Parish in Yale and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Emmett, administrator of Sacred Heart Mission in Brown City.

Go to the Archdiocese of Detroit for a page on Fr. Lewnau's death, and for Archbishop Vigneron's statement.

Local news station WXYZ-TV has more info, as well.  There is also something in the Port Huron Times Herald.

EDIT 10-24-2010: The Michigan Catholic Online has a full write up.  A parishioner of Grotto parishioner who was at Father's last Mass said he spoke about the need to be prepared for death.  The Michigan Catholic article discusses this briefly.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Lewnau, for his family, parishioners, and anyone else who may have been injured in this accident.  This part is not yet clear to me.

I am told by my niece that he celebrated daily Mass at Sacred Heart Parish in Imlay City just hours prior to his death. He was filling in for Fr. Paul Ward who was out of town. His homily at that Mass .... a very impassioned plea that we all need to be ready when Jesus calls us.

I just heard this from someone else at Grotto who was just at that same Mass by Fr. Lewnau (we are a commuter parish and have many who come from various corners of the diocese on Sunday).

I did not know Father, but I have heard some very good things about him. In fact, Fr. Perrone wrote a very short note about him in this weeks Grotto News:

Last night I got the shocking news of the death of one of our diocesan priests, Fr. Richard Lewnau, who was killed in a car accident. I have no other information about this at the moment. Father was an occasional visitor to the parish’s special events. He had been a priest only a few years and was pastor of both Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Emmett and Sacred Heart Church in Yale. He was among those who would join the Grotto priests when a little fraternizing seemed to be in order. Who would have thought that this young priest would be taken away from us so soon? It did make me think about the fragility of our lives and the need to be ever ready ―since you know neither the day nor the hour.‖
