Pope Benedict XVI in Lisbon: Our faith is well-founded, but this faith needs to come alive in each one of us

Here is an excerpt from today's homiliy by Pope Benedict XVI in Lisbon, taken from Vatican Radio.  There are some things here to really reflect on.

Pope Benedict XVI is not only the "Pope of Christian unity" for his work on many fronts where there are divisions from the Church, but also within.   He is redirecting us towards what has been tested and true in the past:  Growth in personal holiness.  When holiness increases at the individual level, it raises collective holiness.  This is why all sin affects the mystical body of Christ.

In the reading that has just been proclaimed, taken from the First Letter of Saint Peter, we heard: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame”. And the Apostle explains: Draw near to the Lord, “that living stone, rejected by men but in God’s sight chosen and precious” (1 Pet 2:6,4). Brothers and sisters, those who believe in Jesus will not be put to shame: he is the Word of God, who can neither deceive nor be deceived, and this Word is attested by a “great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues,” a multitude pictured by the author of the Apocalypse “clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands” (Rev 7:9). This countless multitude includes not only Saints Verissimus, Maxima and Julia, martyred here during the persecution of Diocletian, Saint Vincent, deacon and martyr, the principal patron of the Patriarchate, Saint Anthony and Saint John of Brito who set off from here to sow God’s good seed in other lands and among other peoples, and Saint Nuno of Santa Maria, whom I added to the ranks of the Saints just over a year ago. It is formed of the “servants of our God” from all times and places, on whose forehead the sign of the cross has been inscribed with “the seal of the living God” (Rev 7:2), that is to say, with the Holy Spirit. I am referring to the initial rite administered to each one of us in the sacrament of Baptism, through which the Church gives birth to the “saints”.
We know that she also has quarrelsome and even rebellious sons and daughters, but it is in the saints that the Church recognizes her most characteristic features, it is in them that she tastes her deepest joy. They all share the desire to incarnate the Gospel in their own lives, under the inspiration of the eternal animator of God’s People – the Holy Spirit. Focusing her attention upon her own saints, this local Church has rightly concluded that today’s pastoral priority is to make each Christian man and woman a radiant presence of the Gospel perspective in the midst of the world, in the family, in culture, in the economy, in politics. Often we are anxiously preoccupied with the social, cultural and political consequences of the faith, taking for granted that faith is present, which unfortunately is less and less realistic. Perhaps we have placed an excessive trust in ecclesial structures and programmes, in the distribution of powers and functions; but what will happen if salt loses its flavour?

In order for this not to happen, it is necessary to proclaim anew with vigour and joy the event of the death and resurrection of Christ, the heart of Christianity, the fulcrum and mainstay of our faith, the firm lever of our certainties, the strong wind that sweeps away all fear and indecision, all doubt and human calculation. The resurrection of Christ assures us that no adverse power will ever be able to destroy the Church. Therefore our faith is well-founded, but this faith needs to come alive in each one of us. A vast effort at every level is required if every Christian is to be transformed into a witness capable of rendering account to all and at all times of the hope that inspires him (cf. 1 Pet 3:15): only Christ can fully satisfy the profound longings of every human heart and give answers to its most pressing questions concerning suffering, injustice and evil, concerning death and the life hereafter.
Dear brothers and sisters, dear young friends, Christ is always with us and always walks with his Church, accompanies her and guards her, as he has told us: “I am with you always, to the close of the age” (Mt 28:20). Never doubt his presence! Always seek the Lord Jesus, grow in friendship with him, receive him in communion. Learn to listen to his word and also to recognize him in the poor. Live your lives with joy and enthusiasm, sure of his presence and of his unconditional, generous friendship, faithful even to death on the cross. Bear witness to all of the joy that his strong yet gentle presence evokes, starting with your contemporaries. Tell them that it is beautiful to be a friend of Jesus and that it is well worth following him. With your enthusiasm, demonstrate that, among all the different ways of life that the world today seems to offer us – apparently all on the same level – the only way in which we find the true meaning of life and hence true and lasting joy, is by following Jesus.
Seek daily the protection of Mary, Mother of the Lord and mirror of all holiness. She, the all-holy one, will help you to be faithful disciples of her Son Jesus Christ.

The Holy Father in Fatima - some good "pre-game" material

Many of us who grew up in the midst of Vatican II or thereafter, were not immersed into a culture of Marian devotion in our parishes.  In fact, in my childhood parish, the "We are Church" felt banners exemplified the kind of "devotion" practiced.  In the 70's, especially, Mary was considered passé, and Rosaries were something that old people did to get into heaven.  The old Hollywood movie, The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima, was something we watched yearly, but putting it into practice was another story.

How things are changing - Deo gratias!

HOLY FATHER IN FATIMA - MAY 11-14TH
The Holy Father will be in Fatima this week.  I already have my DVR set to capture it from May 11-14th (go to this page at EWTN and scroll down for coverage).

I wish I had time for a more extensive post, but I do not. If you are not familiar with Fatima, and even if you are, there some things you will want to read, preferrably ahead of this visit.

There is a book that some are reading called the "Fourth Secret of Fatima" by Antonio Socci.  I do not recommend reading this book at this time.  I am hoping to get a review which analyzes this book more thoroughly so that if you do read it, you can compare notes on this critical review, to the book.  More on this some time in the future.

I really think what we need to be doing right now, is not discussing whether the Third Secret was fully revealed or whether the consecration was done correctly, etc.  These things distract from the heart of the Fatima message: Prayer, penance, and conversion.

EDIT: Twitter Feed is updated.  This is the most efficient way to get news to you on my lunch hour, in the mornings and evenings, so check it out: @TeDeumBlog

Here is one example of something I just re-Tweeted, from Catholic News Service: Flying to Portugal, pope says abuse crisis “terrifying”.  It is a must-read!

Thanks, Mom.... For the Gift of Life!

May all of the mothers reading this blog, have a blessed Mother's Day!

While many will honor their living mothers, many others will remember theirs, as I do today.  I am grateful to have had her for as long as I did.  But, I do really miss her.

This is our first year without my mother, Rose, who passed away last June.  The last few years that she was alive, I had  made the habit of picking up a dozen Roses for her on my birthday with a note that simply said, "Thank you, Mom, for the gift of life!".

Please say a prayer today for the many mothers out there who are thinking about abortion, or who have had abortions, regret them, and are now dealing with the scars.  So many have been convinced that it is nothing more than a blob of tissue.

Of course, I couldn't pass up this parting shot on Mother's Day:

Canon Law Update: Abortion and Confession

From Dr. Ed Peters:

Any confessor can absolve penitents of abortion

From time to time I am asked whether priests need special faculties to absolve penitents in abortion cases. Although the 1983 Code, in contrast to the 1917 Code, requires no special confessional faculties in abortion cases -- and therefore any priest authorized to hear confessions can absolve from the sin of abortion and from the automatic censure attached to it -- confusion on this point apparently persists. So let's address it.

Go to his blog, In Light of the Law, to read about abortion and confession

Archbishop Vigneron on First Friday Devotions

Te Deum archive photo:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on August 15, 2009
- Assumption 2009 collection -

It's First Friday and that means there will be Exposition in the parish church all day today.  Please take some time out today and get to an adoration chapel or a church to sit before the Blessed Sacrament.  If you can't do that, set some time aside today for prayer at home.  Back in February of this year, Archbishop Vigneron made it know he wants to renew the practice of First Friday devotions in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
First Friday devotions developed out of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the 17th century, Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, promising to those people who practiced the First Fridays Devotions that “they will not die in my displeasure,” among other promises, as approved by the Church. A person honoring the devotion goes to Mass each first Friday for nine months and receives Communion.

And, here is Archbishop Vigneron speaking about the subject:

"I have in mind that we should consider working together for a renewal of our practice of devoting the First Fridays especially to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with a particular emphasis on joining together – priests and people – to ask the Lord to give our archdiocese priests 'after his own heart,'" the archbishop said in a Feb. 12 letter to priests, in which he cited language from Jeremiah 3:15.

"I see this approach as a particularly effective way to pray for holy priests: for those of us already ordained; and for those whom God is calling to join us, both the men in our seminary and the men who are being invited to enter formation," he continued.

The archbishop said he would be consulting with the Presbyteral Council about how to advance the idea.

Archbishop Vigneron made known his intention regarding the First Friday devotions in addition to announcing his plan for an afternoon of recollection for all priests on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 11.

The Friday afternoon event will include "a Eucharistic Holy Hour, during which we can renew the consecration of our priesthood – our lives and our ministry – to Christ, our High Priest, according to whose Priestly Heart the Holy Spirit shapes our hearts," he said in his letter.

"I look forward to this opportunity for shared prayer and a time for fraternity," the archbishop added regarding what he said would become an annual event.

Archbishop Vigneron shared his thinking that led up to the proposals, reminiscing about his days at Sacred Heart Seminary High School in Detroit, and how the priests who taught their strove to instill concepts of priestly life and ministry into himself and his fellow students.

"In the years since First High, I have found myself returning again and again – sometimes more quickly and sometimes less; sometimes more deeply and sometimes not as profoundly as I would like – but, nonetheless, returning again and again to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus as the model for my heart, for me to be the priest I have for all these years aspired to be," he said.

"In looking back on my life, I see that this high ideal of priestliness which the priests at the seminary high school taught us was inextricably bound up with saying, at the end of night prayer every evening, the aspiration: 'Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, model of the priestly heart, have mercy on us,'" the archbishop continued.

While acknowledging there were aspects of life at the high school seminary of which he none too fond, he said he loved the prayer life there. "I was introduced into new ways of communicating with God that were rich and bright with grace. It was like discovering new territory, just the sort of thing a high-schooler wants. This aspiration was part of that 'new territory.'

"I entered the seminary knowing about the Sacred Heart; I knew about making the First Fridays; but I learned there about the Priestly Heart of Jesus, about that being a Eucharistic Heart, and about His Heart being the model for my heart. And the blessing was that the seminary taught me this at the time when my heart was growing from being a child's heart into being the heart of a man," Archbishop Vigneron added.

Want to criticize the pastor, bishop, pope, or Church? Read this first....

Rev. John Trigilio, PhD. ThD. - EWTN personality, author, speaker and President of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy has an excellent catechetical post up: May the Laity be Critical of it's Pastor, Bishop, Pope, Church?   Here is one small excerpt:

On matters of faith and morals, the official teaching of the Church as elucidated by the Magisterium requires that we ACCEPT. We are to give an ASSENT of Faith to all defined dogmas. Rejecting any dogma is DISSENT and it is a serious offense and grave sin. Revelation is the disclosure of supernatural truths by God to man and which are necessary for our salvation. Unlike Science which learns empirical truth by observation and philosophy which discovers rational truth by deductive and inductive reasoning, theology on the other hand, knows religious truth by divine revelation. "From God's lips to our ears" so to speak.

Consequently, no scientist can DISSENT from the equation 2+2=4 or that water is H2O. Likewise, no theologian and no believer can deny the divinity of Christ, the Real Presence, the Virgin Birth, the Immaculate Conception, et al. It is not academic freedom for Catholic colleges to pay professors who deny Magisterial teachings.

I've used similar examples myself.  There are objective truths, not just in mathematics and chemistry, but in matters of faith and morals.  Christ sacrificed Himself in the ultimate act of love for us.  How do we love God back? Choose obedience (Luke 10:16)

Cardinal Pell - New Prefect for the Congregation for Bishops?

Cardinal George Pell of Australia - in the cappa magna

EDIT @6:24 - It is not on today's Bollettino .... yet.  Sometimes it is updated later, but I've seen that happen infrequently.  In any event, the rumor has been heating up.

Rumor has been floating for some months, and intensifying in recent days, that Cardinal George Pell of Australia will take the helm at the Congregation for Bishops as Cardinal Giovani Batista Re heads into retirement, having reached the age of 75.  The congregation is responsible for making recommendations to the Holy Father on the appointment of bishops.  Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, now Prefect of the Signatura (Vatican equivalent of the Supreme Court), was also named last fall to the congregation.

A few notes about Cardinal Pell:

Here are some sources to watch for commentary this morning and later today.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Rosary for the Bishop: Archbishop Vigneron

Please consider participating in the Rosary for the Bishop project.  I'm using my own archbishop's page as an example.  All US bishops have been added to the database, so if you want to find your bishop click here and type in the diocese or  his name.  The auxiliary bishops are loaded in there too, let's not forget them.

To see the statistics on those offering to pray the Rosary for Archbishop Vigneron, and/or to sign up, click here.  Here is the page for Bishop Francis Reiss, the lone auxiliary left in Detroit.

If you are already praying the Rosary daily, ask the  Blessed Virgin Mary to automatically apply the intentions for the day(s) of the month that you choose to that particular bishop. If you can do an extra Rosary on that day, that's wonderful, but if you cannot pray two Rosaries in one day, just ask that graces on the day you choose go to your chosen bishop(s).

Rosary for the Bishop is now expanding globally.  In a recent post at the blog of Rosary for the Bishop, it was announced: Now Available for Bishops in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.  The blog also has a list in the sidebar of ..... blogging bishops!

What some bishops are saying about Rosary for the Bishop:

We bishops rely each and every blessed day on the prayers of the good and holy people of our diocese and of all those who have gone before us. We have no better intercessor than our Blessed Mother, the Mother of all the Apostles, the Mother of the Church. It gives me great serenity to know that so many women and men are turning to Mary, asking her special care and intercession for the bishops. As the Lord blesses the bishops through the intercession of Mary, may every person who takes part in the Rosary for the Bishop project also be blessed.

- Bishop Robert C. Morlino, Diocese of Madison
And...
As a Bishop, I am humbled and privileged to be prayed for by name each time Mass is celebrated in my Diocese. Knowing that many others are also praying for me every day by participating in the program Rosary for the Bishop, is a special blessing and source of encouragement for me. The intercession of our Blessed Mother through the praying of the rosary is a powerful tool to help me in my mission as a Shepherd of the Church. Thank you to all who participate in the program and for all who make it possible. It means more to me than you will ever know and I do indeed feel the grace of your prayers for me.

- Bishop R. Walker Nickless, Diocese of Sioux City

At Notre Dame, the pot is calling the kettle black...

Fr. Z fisks a statement by Fr. Jenkins of Notre Dame University in which he discusses the case of those arrested amidst the great Notre Dame scandal.   I couldn't believe the hypocrisy of what Fr. Jenkins says here:

“In the weeks leading up to Notre Dame’s Commencement on May 17, 2009, a number of people violated University policies on campus demonstrations.

The pot is calling the kettle black. I don't see how you can compare people violating university policies, with the "in your face" defiance by Notre Dame University of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.  The local bishop, Msgr. John D'Arcy called it a "terrible breach" between Notre Dame and the Catholic church.

Jenkins continues...

They were given repeated warnings by law enforcement officials, and then, when they persisted, they were arrested and charged with Criminal Trespass.
Repeated warning?  How about the 83 public "warnings" voiced by Catholic bishops across the US? and, the more the 360,000 signed objections from others?
Utter hypocrisy.

Holy See on the completion of the apostolic visition of the Legionaries of Christ

The Vatican has released a statement on the Apostolic Visitation of the Legionaries of Christ.  Here is the coverage by Vatican Radio.  Below is a video news report from Rome Reports.

(01 May 10 – RV) Below we publish a Vatican Radio translation of the Press Office Statement released Saturday May 1, at the conclusion of a two day meeting in the Vatican on the outcome of the Apostolic Visitation of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ:

1. On the days April 30 and May 1, the Cardinal Secretary of State chaired a meeting in the Vatican with five bishops in charge of the Apostolic Visitation of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ (Bishop Ricardo Blazquez, archbishop of Valladolid, Msgr. Charles J. Chaput OFM Cap., Archbishop of Denver, Mgr. Andrella Ricardo Ezzati SDB, Archbishop of Concepción, Mgr. Giuseppe Versaldi, Bishop of Alexandria; Mgr. Ricardo Watty Urquidi, M.Sp.S., Bishop of Tepic). It was attended by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and the Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.
One of the sessions took place in the presence of the Holy Father, to whom the Visitors presented a summary of their report, which had been previously submitted.

During the visitation over 1,000 Legionnaires were met in person and hundreds of written documents were examined. The Visitors have visited almost all the religious houses and many of the works of the apostolate directed by the Congregation. They heard, orally or in writing, the opinion of many diocesan bishops of the countries where the congregation operates. The Visitors also met several members of the "Regnum Christi" Movement, although it was not the subject of the visit, especially men and women religious. They have also received considerable correspondence from laity and family members of the Movement.

The five Visitors testified to a sincere reception and a constructive spirit of cooperation shown them by the congregation and individual religious. While acting independently, they have reached a widely convergent evaluation and a shared opinion. They testified that to having met a large number of honest and talented religious individuals, many of them young, who seek Christ with genuine zeal and offer their entire lives to spread the Kingdom of God

2. The Apostolic Visitation was able to ascertain that the behaviour of Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado has caused serious consequences in the life and structure of the Legion, so much so, to require a journey of profound re-evaluation.

The serious and objectively immoral behaviour of Fr. Maciel, supported by incontrovertible evidence, at times constitutes real crimes, and manifests a life devoid of scruples and of genuine religious feeling. The large majority of Legionaries were unaware of that life, particularly because of the system of relations created by Fr. Maciel, who had skilfully managed to build up an alibi, to gain the trust, confidence and surrounding silence and strengthen his role as a charismatic founder.
Not infrequently the lamentable disgracing and expulsion of those who doubted his upright conduct, and the misconception of not wanting to harm the good that the Legion was doing, had created around him a defence mechanism which made him untouchable for a long time , thus rendering knowledge of his real life difficult.

3. The sincere zeal of the majority of the Legionaries - which also emerged from the Visitation of the congregation houses and their many works, and which is appreciated by many - led many in the past to believe that the charges, which gradually became more insistent and widespread, could only be slander.
Therefore the discovery and knowledge of the truth about the founder resulted in surprise, dismay and deep sorrow among members of the Legion, as clearly evidenced by the Visitors.

4. From the results of the Apostolic Visitation it has emerged clearly, among other elements:
a) the need to redefine the charism of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ, preserving the core truth, that of "Militia Christi", which characterizes the apostolic and missionary action of the Church and which is not identifiable with efficacy at any cost;
b) the need to review the exercise of authority, which must be conjoined to the truth, in respect of conscience and to develop in light of the Gospel as an authentic ecclesial service;
c) the need to preserve young people's enthusiasm of faith, the missionary zeal, the apostolic dynamism, through appropriate formation. Indeed, disappointment about the founder could call into question the core of this vocation and charism that belongs and is specific to the Legionaries of Christ.

5. The Holy Father would like to assure all Legionnaires and members of the "Regnum Christi" Movement that they will not be left alone: the Church has a strong desire to accompany them and help them in the path of purification that awaits them. It will also mean sincere confrontation with all those who, inside and outside the Legion, were victims of sexual abuse and of the power system devised by the founder. It is to them, at this time, that the thoughts and prayers of the Holy Father go, along with his gratitude to the many who, even in the midst of great hardships, had the courage and perseverance to demand the truth.

6. The Holy Father, in thanking the Visitors for the delicate work which they competently carried out with generosity and deep pastoral sensitivity, assured them that he will soon indicate the modalities of this process of accompaniment, starting with the appointment of a Delegate and a Study Commission on the Constitution.
The Holy Father will send a Visitor to the Regnum Christi Movement, in response to insistent requests from consecrated members thereof.

7. Finally, to all Legionaries of Christ, their families, committed lay people in the Regnum Christi movement, the Holy Father renewes his encouragement during this difficult time for the Congregation and each one of them. He urges them not to lose sight that their vocation, which originated from Christ’s call and is animated by the ideal to witness his love to the world, is a true gift from God, a treasure for the Church, the indestructible foundation on which to build their personal future and that of the Legion.
