Card. Canizares recommends Catholics receive Communion on the tongue, kneeling

From CNA:

Lima, Peru, Jul 28, 2011 / 01:56 pm (CNA).- Spanish Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera recently recommended that Catholics receive Communion on the tongue, while kneeling.

“It is to simply know that we are before God himself and that He came to us and that we are undeserving,” the prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments said in an interview with CNA during his visit to Lima, Peru.

The cardinal’s remarks came in response to a question on whether Catholics should receive Communion in the hand or on the tongue.

He recommended that Catholics “receive Communion on the tongue and while kneeling.”

Receiving Communion in this way, the cardinal continued, “is the sign of adoration that needs to be recovered. I think the entire Church needs to receive Communion while kneeling.”

“In fact,” he added, “if one receives while standing, a genuflection or profound bow should be made, and this is not happening.”

The act of kneeling while receiving (on the tongue) Our Lord Himself should have never been abandoned at all. I know there are arguments abounding about the early church and such like, but we are not the early church anymore. Those early errors have been repaired and then creep up again for whatever reasons, all rather invalid and very suspicious to a thinking Catholic today.

The bottom line seems to be an issue of modern ignorance. It has not become such a big problem, as it only has been going on for about 40 years or so. The widespread return of the Extraordinary form of the Holy SACRIFICE of the Mass may very well be our greatest tool in order to get tradition back, and innovation out once and for all. Predominately those who feel they are alright in handling the host often have a lack of understanding of the Eucharist itself--if this were not the case, they would not be doing it.

The Catholic who truly knows what the Eucharist is would never handle it in such a willy-nilly manner as some do today.

The overall reason is both usually due to bad catechists and modernism mixed with liberalism promoted by priests who want to be more protestant than Catholic. We are coming down to a period in the Church where very important decisions will have to be made by all of us.

I have always found the best way to break a bad habit once and for all is to eradicate it completely. My parish only receives kneeling and on the tongue. Those who put their hands out are quickly corrected. It all starts (and can also end) in your local parish.
