Biden thumbing his nose at US Bishops?

Back in September when Joe Biden first misrepresented the faith, well over a dozen US bishops spoke up to publicly correct his very public errors. Tom Peters had a list as of a certain date, but I believe more spoke up after the post was made. In the same post, he links us to a list of over 25 bishops who responded to Nancy Pelosi's public misrepresentation of the faith. You can't tell me that these two politicians did not see or hear about the corrections made by the US bishops.

Apparently that is not enough because Joe Biden is at it again. If he is at all aware of what the bishops have said about his earlier statements, then he is simply thumbing his nose at them in this interview: Biden balances his faith with social responsibility .

I'm sorry to say that this is beyond ignorance. It is misrepresenting the faith in order to get votes.

Here are just a few excerpts:

This first one follows the question: How do you reconcile your Catholic faith with your position on Roe v. Wade.

We've always believed from the outset that abortion is wrong. But throughout the years, debated the degree to which it is wrong. There are always cases where it is never a first choice. It is always viewed as a dire decision. But throughout the church's history, we've argued between whether or not it is wrong in every circumstance and the degree of wrong. Catholics have this notion, it's almost a gradation.

We have mortal sins, venial sins, well, up until Pius IX, there were times when we said, 'Look, there are circumstances in which it's wrong but it is not damnation. Along came Pius IX in the 1860s and declared in fine doctrine, this was the first time that it occurred that it was absolute human life and being at the moment of conception.
It's always been a debate. I take my religion very seriously.

[snip]

This second is near the end.

I think it's going to be an issue for everybody. Anyone who's a Catholic, a practicing Catholic, this is a dilemma for. There's an expression in law school: hard cases make bad law. These are just very, very, very difficult moral, social and societal choices.

And for me, I am prepared as a senator to say that the framework of Roe v. Wade based upon this imperfect trimester notion captures the gravity of how you should approach this most serious of decisions relating to life and death. First trimester, the state should stay out of it completely because it's a matter of faith, basically, there. Second trimester, there are competing interests, but they're both legitimate to look at. Third trimester, there's an overwhelming burden to say, there isn't a good reason to abort unless it relates to the mother's health. I'm as comfortable as I can be on a really difficult moral dilemma.

To sum it up, as a Catholic, I'm a John XXIII guy, I'm not a Pope John Paul guy.

You have to read the entire article. He is all over the map. He's beyond confused.

What doesn't help is that the Joe Bidens of the world can go priest shopping for someone who will tell them that these views are ok. What aids them further is that for 40 years the bishops have been largely silent and passive on the issue of abortion, as have most priests. Ask yourself when you last heard about abortion from the pulpit. I hear it often at Assumption Grotto and the first time it was mentioned I nearly fell out of the pew. Why? Because I had NEVER heard the word uttered from the pulpit before I got to Grotto and I was born in 1962. Over those years had been in as many as 7 parishes

The greatest holocaust of modern times here in the US - the slaughter of innocence - a number which rivals only that of Mao who slaughtered 48 - 79,000,000, and there has been virtually no catechesis from most pulpits. People are getting it from the mainstream media which misrepresents the faith and uses dissidents to do the job. The bishops have their work cut out for them.

Thankfully, things are changing - rapidly. That list of bishops gives me tremendous hope for the future. I am aware of more priests discussing it from the pulpits. They are being emboldened by the bishops who speak up, as it should be.

Unfortunately, as long as the Church permits theologians to mispresent the faith in public ways - in classrooms, in the media (we all know the lib media seeks out dissident priests and theologians), and in books, the Joe Bidens of the world will be able to say that it has been a controversial issue for the Church. Sanctions are sorely needed in order to keep the larger body of faithful from continuing to be scandalized.

Pray for our bishops. They need a good dose of courage - the kind the early bishops of the Church had in the face of heresy - to the point of suffering death! Don't think for a minute that those folks in the early days responsible for heresy weren't as confused as people are today. No one wants to misunderstand the faith. But, it comes down to humility. When the bishops speak, and their words are in communion with long standing, authentic Catholic teaching, we should accept it with humility, or at least remain silent and in prayer as we seek to understand.

Understanding should never come before faith, because that is not an exercise of faith. Faith seeks understanding.

Photopost: Day of Recollection at Assumption Grotto with Fr. Basil Nortz, ORC

Benediction took place around 5:00pm following the Day of Recollection offered by Fr. Basil Nortz, ORC, who was visiting from Brazil.

This pictures does not do justice to the number of people who were present. The lounge was packed beyond capacity with a few people listening in the hallway. Father spoke on the Eucharist - an ever popular subject at Assumption Grotto.

People headed to the main church for about 45 minutes of Adoration and confessions were heard, as well. Below, I noticed as soon as I walked into the Church that the incense smoke used hours earlier at the 9:30am Mass was still lingering and accented by the sun's rays beaming through the stained glass windows.

Archbishop Chaput - again on Catholics supporting Obama

Quote of the day by Archbishop Chaput:

To suggest -- as some Catholics do -- that Senator Obama is this year’s “real” pro-life candidate requires a peculiar kind of self-hypnosis, or moral confusion, or worse. To portray the 2008 Democratic Party presidential ticket as the preferred “pro-life” option is to subvert what the word “pro-life” means. Anyone interested in Senator Obama’s record on abortion and related issues should simply read Prof. Robert George’s essay of earlier this week, “Obama’s Abortion Extremism,” at thepublicdiscourse.com. It says everything that needs to be said.

Take some time and read Archbishop Chaput's latest address in it's entirety at Zenit: "Little Murders"

Adoration Vigil at Sts Cryil & Methodius - October 29-30

Yesterday, I spoke about the upcoming Election Eve Adoration Vigil that will be held at Assumption Grotto, following the 7:00pm Mass on November 3, until the 6:30am Traditional Latin Mass. Adoration will be available throughout the day that Tuesday, as it is every day in our chapel. There was some discussion about having the daytime adoration in the parish church, but I'm not sure if this will be the case, or if it will be held in the chapel as it is daily.

I want to draw attention to other events. I will be adding this to the combox of that post I mentioned above because I would like to get a listing of parishes having such events so people may support them.

Here in metro Detroit, my attention was drawn to another parish which is having Adoration and it is being held a few days ahead of the one at Grotto, which makes it possible for people from the two parishes to engage in both.

Sts Cryil & Methodius in Sterling Heights, Michigan is holding a vigil on October 29-30.

From the bulletin October 19, 2008 bulletin

Adoration * Oct 29-30

Focus: Open Letter to Christians Voting for Obama

A couple of people have sent me emails with links to the 10-15-2008 homepage of Fr. Paul Ward, one of Assumption Grotto's associates. I believe this will move to archives when he next posts, so here is that post in it's entirety.

Fr. Paul first leads us to some great resources, some of which I've already linked to in other posts here. Secondly, he introduces us to the open letter that Fr. John Bustamante, another associate at Assumption Grotto, wrote to Christians voting for Senator Obama.

Ponder this!

Open Letter to Christians Voting for Obama

Guest Column

Today I am happy to present a letter written by Fr. John Bustamante. It was presented as a private e-mail, and I have obtained his consent to show his letter on my web site. But allow me three little comments only tangentially related, which I’d rather not wait until next week to write:

1. Before the letter, I wish to provide a link to this important video and article, documenting the ferociously violent hatred pro-abortion and pro-homosexual activists have for the Catholic Church:
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=13854.

2. Second, some of you know about the Freedom of Choice Act. With typical hypocrisy, the pro-abortionists include “freedom of choice,” but the fact is, your tax dollars would provide endless abortions, mountains of aborted babies, and you would not be free to do anything about it. Several bishops have expressed objections about it, as the elections draw near, for example, Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Mo., and Cardinal Justin Regali, Archbishop of Philadelphia (link opens .pdf).

3. Third, recently I mused so: if you give power to men who abort babies, then why will they stop the killing once it comes to you? Voters can be amazingly superficial.

These introductory comments bring abortion to mind, but now let us consider Fr. Bustamante’s Open Letter, (emphases in original.), as I sign off to you, Gentle Reader,

- Fr. Paul Ward

Now for the words of Fr. John Bustamante:

Open Letter to Christians Voting for Obama

By Fr. John Bustamante

I would like to ask you a question: if you were a Supreme Court Justice sitting on the bench in 1973 and your vote was one of the nine votes for or against abortion-on-demand, how would you have voted? Would you have voted for abortion-on-demand or against it? Since we are speaking hypothetically, you needn’t concern yourself with any other issues of the interpretation of the Constitution. Or the right to privacy—an argument that was acknowledged to be false in the personal diaries of the very Supreme Court Chief Justice who had handed the abortion-on-demand decision down just months before. Just base your answer on the one thing that isn’t hypothetical—your Catholic or Christian faith. Your belief in Jesus Christ. Your full knowledge that you will one day stand before him and render an accounting for what you did in the body—whether good or evil (2 Cor 5:10). How would you have voted?

The answer to that question will tell you whether you are Catholic or not. It will tell you whether you are Christian or not. It will tell you whether you believe in God—the Giver of life—or not. It will tell you whether you believe in the Fifth Commandment or not. Are you—hypothetically—going to condemn millions of unborn children to a horrific death in their mothers wombs? But more importantly—and more certainly—are you willing to stand before God as one who supported such an intrinsically evil act?

Six months ago, I was convinced that the Republican Party and Democratic Party had colluded to eliminate abortion from the November ballot. I was certain that we would have to choose between two pro-abortion presidential candidates on the November ballot. I was wrong. In fact, I was so wrong that the November ballot is exactly the opposite. The November election is nothing short of a national referendum on abortion.

In 1973, the Supreme Court short-circuited the democratic process and took the abortion issue out of the hands of voters and put it into the hands of abortionists, Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and others who have, time and time again, shown that they treat human life like any other political issue. This year, for the first time since 1973, the American people will have the opportunity to vote on whether they agree with Roe vs. Wade or not.

John McCain has thrown down the gauntlet to America. His pro-life voting record and his naming of Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential candidate has completely eliminated any doubt about where he stands on abortion and even what he is willing to do as President of the United States to back up his stance. Conversely, the same can be said of Barak Obama and Joe Biden. Their stand on expanding and extending abortion goes beyond what even the most virulent pro-abortion organizations like NARAL and Planned Parenthood require to give a candidate a 100% voting record.

You need not pretend you are one of the nine Justices handing down a decision in 1973. If you vote—and even if you don’t—you will be, more importantly, casting your vote before God. By voting for the Political Party of Death, you are voting for the continuation and expansion of abortion, euthanasia, the destruction of human embryos, the undermining of marriage and all the consequences that entails, the stripping of the rights of parents to educate and protect their children, and countless other immoral and even unlawful consequences. These aren’t possibilities. They are simply the track record of Democrats over the past 30 years and, moreover, they are the campaign promises made by Barak Obama and Joseph Biden.

The mortal sin of voting for the two pro-abortion candidates and further empowering their Political Party is not hypothetical. It is something for which you will answer to God.

Voting for pro-abortion candidates and further empowering their Political Party means that you will have exercised the fullest expression of participation in government that our political system gives its citizens to contribute to the deaths of even more unborn children. There is little more that you can do politically to be accountable for continuing and expanding abortion—except support the campaigns of pro-abortion candidates with lawn signs and bumper stickers and campaign contributions. Think about it: you are going to stand before God and tell Him that your conscience told you that gas prices were more important than life? That higher taxes to fund bigger government was more important than life? That the class warfare that is being incessantly waged is more important than life? I don’t think that a single pro-abortion legislator has ever performed an abortion, but they have directly enabled tens of thousands of abortionists to commit tens of millions of abortions.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta said it is a poverty that a child must die that you may live as you wish. It is a poverty that so many Christians are voting as if there is no God. If we daily entrust the souls of the infants who were murdered by abortion to God’s Mercy, then to whom do we entrust those who took their lives? Jesus said, “Blessed are those who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs” (Matthew 5:7). May your vote in November be a vote of mercy for the unborn.

Election Eve Adoration Vigil at Grotto - What's your parish doing?

As the culture of life battles the culture of death in this year's national election, many parishes and dioceses are using the best weapon in their arsenal: Prayer.

Assumption Grotto is holding all night Adoration into Election Day morning. It ends with the 6:30am daily Traditional Latin Mass (typically a low Mass). Security will be provided and we have gotten permission to have coffee and donuts in the back vestibule for those who will be staying long hours overnight (and some have vowed to stay all night!)

The USCCB has asked all Catholics to pray the Election Novena.

Fr. Corapi has encouraged a Rosary Novena:

No other issue, not all other issues taken together, can constitute a proportionate reason for voting for candidates that intend to preserve and defend this holocaust of innocent human life that is abortion.I strongly urge every one of you to make a Novena and pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election Day, November 4th. Pray that God’s will be done and the most innocent and utterly vulnerable of our brothers and sisters will be protected from this barbaric and grossly sinful blight on society that is abortion. No woman, and no man, has the right to choose to murder an innocent human being.

Any of you who are moved by the subject matter in this article, you may want to check out this week's "Weekly Wisdom" Click here to see the schedule.

WHAT IS YOUR PARISH DOING?

Is there something special going on in your parish such as all night Adoration, special prayers leading up to the election, or other? Please list them in the combox. Let's get a list going so that others can see where they can catch something, or get ideas for things they can initiate in their own parish.

IS IT MORALLY ACCEPTABLE TO VOTE FOR McCAIN?

There is a very good blogpost out there on the blog of Jimmy Akin by one of his co-writers on morality and voting. It addresses the seldomly discussed topic on Catholics who don't feel they can vote for McCain on the basis of his support of Embryonic Stem Cell Research. I had a lead-in commentary about the stakes in this election for the US Supreme Court and Federal Court system ast large. All comments on this topic need to be directed to the blogpost below to keep this combox open for a list of devotions and prayers for th election.

Go read: Pro-life Voters: Is it wrong to Vote for McCain because he is not 100% Pro-life?

EDIT: One sidenote - please keep in mind that tomorrow, Fr. Basil Nortz, ORC will be holding a Day of Recollection at Assumption Grotto.

Pro-life Voters: Is it wrong to Vote for McCain because he is not 100% Pro-life?

There is a very good blogpost series which discusses whether it is morally acceptable for a Catholic to vote for someone like McCain who is not 100% pro-life as Catholics would define it. That link will come in a moment. First....

I have been surprised by the pro-life people I encounter who feel they cannot vote for McCain because he supports embryonic stem cell research, which is intrinsically evil. A human embryo cannot develop into anything else, but a human. It has a soul and it's life was initiated by God who is the author of life. This makes it as intrinsically evil as abortion itself.

It's understandable how some might think that it is morally wrong to vote for McCain because of this and it is not a light matter. However, what does the Catholic Church teach? Hold that thought for a moment.

THE PRESIDENT, THE FEDERAL COURTS, AND ABORTION

One thing I want to point out is that I have my sights on the US Supreme Courts with my choice of president, whicih is McCain. Many do not realize that when we elect presidents, we are impacting the Supreme Court AND all lower federal court appointments. The US Supreme Court justices get their life-long appointments to the bench through the President after being confirmed by the Senate. You may recall what Judge Robert Bork had to go through as Democrats applied their litmus test on abortion. Clarence Thomas survived being " borked" when he went through the process, as did Roberts.

From a constitutional standpoing, Roe v Wade never should have received a favorable ruling. It was activist judges legislating from the bench - something that is increasingly threatening the very fundamentals upon which our country was founded.

Only two men have the possibility of making it into the White House: McCain or Obama. McCain does not believe judges should be legislating from the bench and would look at judges voting records - not necessarily on how they feel about abortion, but on how courts should be deciding issues based on the Constitution. Abortion rights cloaked by "privacy rights" is cooked-up and many believe will fall with time. However, it all depends on who makes it into the White House as to how long it will take - 5 years, 10 years, or 40-50.

If Obama makes it into the White House, he will undoubtedly stack the bench with judges who support Roe v Wade. He has said as much. Justice Stevens is 92, Ginsburg is 75 and experiencing health problems, Scalia and Kennedy are both 72. You see where this is headed. We have at least 2-4 judges who may head off into retirement within the next 4-8 years. Once the court is replaced with liberal judges, they will be there for decades. (Biographies on each judge)

This says nothing of the multitude of federal judges also appointed by the US President. If you thought the Florida Supremes caused a debacle in 2000, just wait.

Furthermore, Obama has vowed to make the notorious Freedom Of Choice Act the first thing he would sign into law. Those pro-lifers who sit on the sidelines this election or vote for a third party will reel the most when this happens.

It's true that we don't know with 100% certainty whether McCain would get it right with his Federal judge picks. It's a tricky process. President Reagan got it wrong with Kennedy in 1988 and is undoubtedly rolling in his grave. George H.W. Bush got it wrong with Souter. What makes me confident about McCain is not whether he is pro-life enough. I don't fear his picks because of his desire to "reach across the aisle". My confidence comes from his understanding that judges should not legislate from the bench and a judge cut from this cloth would not uphold Roe v. Wade. At the debate, he spoke of not using a litmus test, but of looking at judges records. What records? Whether they have a propensity to bend the US Constitution like some bend Catholic teaching or uphold it.

The stakes are very high here people. Think hard before you rule out voting for McCain if you are pro-life.

On the blog of Jimmy Akin, blogwriter "SDG" (not Jimmy), has a very good series up on this very topic of whether it is morally wrong or acceptable to vote for the candidate that will do the least amount of damage. Do read it, especially if you are thinking of voting for a third party candidate or sitting out the election.

Go read SDG's post series at Jimmy Akin's blog: Elections, Voting and Morality

EDIT: For a limited time, you can also listen to the great show Raymond Arroyo had on EWTN's World Over Live last night. He interviewed Wendy Long at the Judicial Confirmation Network who talked indepth about Supreme Court Justices. She is seen here in this video:

Detroit Aux Bishop Quinn....Detroit's Loss is Winona's Gain

Bishop Quinn is flanked by several priests and deacons, including Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life. Bishop Quinn was the celebrant at a Mass preceding the burial of aborted babies, found in an abortion clinic dumpster.
Well, we have lost Bishop Quinn. Detroit's loss is Winona, Minnesota's gain. He has been appointed as Coadjutor Bishop for the diocese of Winona and will take the helm in that diocese when Bishop Bernard Harrington goes into retirement. He turned 75 in September.
Tom Peters, the American Papist, has more. Detroit is now down to two auxiliary bishops - Reese and Flores, and Cardinal Maida has been coasting into retirement, awaiting the appointment of his successor.

October 15: Feast of St. Teresa of Jesus (of Avila)

This is a special day for all Carmelites, including secular Carmelites. Secular Carmelites are mostly lay people, but diocesan priests may belong to the secular order, as well. Two examples are Fr. Perrone of Assumption Grotto and Fr. Robert Altier, formerly of St. Agnes in Minnesota. Fr. Perrone is the spiritual director to our community at Assumption Grotto.
The special occassion is the feast day of St. Teresa of Jesus, also known more commonly as St. Teresa of Avila. She is a doctor of the Church and author of several popular spiritual books. The Way of Perfection and the Interior Castle are among them. You can find these time-tested classics to read entirely online places like the secular Carmelite site. The virtues described in these writings apply to most everyone, which is probably why they are popular.....they hit home.
The Catholic Information Center also carries some of the text online: Here is Chapter 13 from The Way of Perfection:

Continues to treat of mortification and explains how one must renounce the world's standards of wisdom in order to attain to true wisdom.

I often tell you, sisters, and now I want it to be set down in writing, not to forget that we in this house, and for that matter anyone who would be perfect, must flee a thousand leagues from such phrases as: "I had right on my side"; "They had no right to do this to me"; "The person who treated me like this was not right". God deliver us from such a false idea of right as that! Do you think that it was right for our good Jesus to have to suffer so many insults, and that those who heaped them on Him[5] were right, and that they had any right to do Him those wrongs? I do not know why anyone is in a convent who is willing to bear only the crosses that she has a perfect right to expect: such a person should return to the world, though even there such rights will not be safeguarded. Do you think you can ever possibly have to bear so much that you ought not to have to bear any more? How does right enter into the matter at all? I really do not know.

Before we begin talking about not having our rights, let us wait until we receive some honour or gratification, or are treated kindly, for it is certainly not right that we should have anything in this life like that. When, on the other hand, some offence is done to us (and we do not feel it an offence to us that it should be so described), I do not see what we can find to complain of. Either we are the brides of this great King or we are not. If we are, what wife is there with a sense of honour who does not accept her share in any dishonour done to her spouse, even though she may do so against her will? Each partner, in fact, shares in the honour and dishonour of the other. To desire to share in the kingdom [of our Spouse Jesus Christ], and to enjoy it, and yet not to be willing to have any part in His dishonours and trials, is ridiculous.

God keep us from being like that! Let the sister who thinks that she is accounted the least among all consider herself the [happiest and] most fortunate, as indeed she really is, if she lives her life as she should, for in that case she will, as a rule, have no lack of honour either in this life or in the next. Believe me when I say this -- what an absurdity, though, it is for me to say "Believe me" when the words come from Him Who is true Wisdom, Who is Truth Itself, and from the Queen of the angels! Let us, my daughters, in some small degree, imitate the great humility of the most sacred Virgin, whose habit we wear and whose nuns we are ashamed to call ourselves. Let us at least imitate this humility of hers in some degree -- I say "in some degree" because, however much we may seem to humble ourselves, we fall far short of being the daughters of such a Mother, and the brides of such a Spouse. If, then, the habits I have described are not sternly checked, what seems nothing to-day will perhaps be a venial sin to-morrow, and that is so infectious a tendency that, if you leave it alone, the sin will not be the only one for long; and that is a very bad thing for communities.

We who live in a community should consider this very carefully, so as not to harm those who labour to benefit us and to set us a good example. If we realize what great harm is done by the formation of a bad habit of over-punctiliousness about our honour, we should rather die a thousand deaths than be the cause of such a thing. For only the body would die, whereas the loss of a soul is a great loss which is apparently without end; some of us will die, but others will take our places and perhaps they may all be harmed more by the one bad habit which we started than they are benefited by many virtues. For the devil does not allow a single bad habit to disappear and the very weakness of our mortal nature destroys the virtues in us.

Oh, what a real charity it would be, and what a service would be rendered to God, if any nun who sees that she cannot [endure and] conform to the customs of this house would recognize the fact and go away [before being professed, as I have said elsewhere], and leave the other sisters in peace! And no convent (at least, if it follows my advice) will take her or allow her to make her profession until they have given her many years' probation to see if she improves. I am not referring to shortcomings affecting penances and fasts, for, although these are wrong, they are not things which do so much harm. I am thinking of nuns who are of such a temperament that they like to be esteemed and made much of; who see the faults of others but never recognize their own; and who are deficient in other ways like these, the true source of which is want of humility. If God does not help such a person by bestowing great spirituality upon her, until after many years she becomes greatly improved, may God preserve you from keeping her in your community. For you must realize that she will neither have peace there herself nor allow you to have any.

As you do not take dowries, God is very gracious to you in this respect. It grieves me that religious houses should often harbour one who is a thief and robs them of their treasure, either because they are unwilling to return a dowry or out of regard for the relatives. In this house you have risked losing worldly honour and forgone it (for no such honour is paid to those who are poor); do not desire, then, that others should be honoured at such a cost to yourselves. Our honour, sisters, must lie in the service of God, and, if anyone thinks to hinder you in this, she had better keep her honour and stay at home. It was with this in mind that our Fathers ordered a year's probation (which in our Order we are free to extend to four years): personally, I should like it to be prolonged to ten years. A humble nun will mind very little if she is not professed: for she knows that if she is good she will not be sent away, and if she is not, why should she wish to do harm to one of Christ's communities?[6]

By not being good, I do not mean being fond of vanities, which, I believe, with the help of God, will be a fault far removed from the nuns in this house. I am referring to a want of mortification and an attachment to worldly things and to self-interest in the matter which I have described. Let anyone who knows that she is not greatly mortified take my advice and not make her profession if she does not wish to suffer a hell on earth, and God grant there may not be another hell awaiting such a nun in the world to come! There are many reasons why she should fear there may belt and possibly neither she nor her sisters may realize this as well as I do.

Believe what I say here; if you will not, I must leave it to time to prove the truth of my words. For the whole manner of life we are trying to live is making us, not only nuns, but hermits [like the holy Fathers our predecessors] and leading us to detachment from all things created. I have observed that anyone whom the Lord has specially chosen for this life is granted that favour. She may not have it in full perfection, but that she has it will be evident from the great joy and gladness that such detachment gives her, and she will never have any more to do with worldly things, for her delight will be in all the practices of the religious life. I say once more that anyone who is inclined to things of the world should leave the convent[7] if she sees she is not making progress. If she still wishes to be a nun she should go to another convent; if she does not, she will see what happens to her. She must not complain of me as the foundress of this convent and say I have not warned her.

This house is another Heaven, if it be possible to have Heaven upon earth. Anyone whose sole pleasure lies in pleasing God and who cares nothing for her own pleasure will find our life a very good one; if she wants anything more, she will lose everything, for there is nothing more that she can have. A discontented soul is like a person suffering from severe nausea, who rejects all food, however nice it may be; things which persons in good health delight in eating only cause her the greater loathing. Such a person will save her soul better elsewhere than here; she may even gradually reach a degree of perfection which she could not have attained here because we expected too much of her all at once. For although we allow time for the attainment of complete detachment and mortification in interior matters, in externals this has to be practised immediately, because of the harm which may otherwise befall the rest; and anyone who sees this being done, and spends all her time in such good company, and yet, at the end of six months or a year, has made no progress, will, I fear, make none over a great many years, and will even go backward. I do not say that such a nun must be as perfect as the rest, but she must be sure that her soul is gradually growing healthier -- and it will soon become clear if her disease is mortal

The Bishop's backbones are getting stronger!

It is a true pleasure to continue reading stories of Bishops who are speaking up in their dioceses to clarify Catholic teaching on voting. There have been many misrepresentations in the popular press by politicians trying to gain votes for themselves or others.

I don't have time to put the whole thing up and Fr. Z has it formatted well, with comments. This one is a realy dandy!

Go read: Joint Statement of the Bishops of Dallas and Forth Worth, USA

There are more to come. I encourage you to check in on Fr. Z's blog daily. There are some other great news items there too, but I must get off to bed. 4:30 comes early.

I am also behind on making some other posts and hope I will get to them. Time has been tight.
