2013 Easter Vigil (1962 Missal)

On Saturday we celebrated the Easter vigil where those who have been studying the faith were brought into the Church through the Sacraments.  The Triduum at Assumption Grotto is celebrated using the 1962 Missal.

First I just want to show a close-up of the Dalmatics that were in use by the deacon and subdeacon.  As was pointed out to me, on this first one we have both St. Francis and St. Benedict - rather interesting given the election of Pope Francis, followed by Pope Benedict XVI.

This one, I am told, has St. Dominic and St. Bernard.

It was very difficult to photograph in near total darkness, but some came out quite well.  In the past I have used a tripod, but by the time I got the shot framed, the action was over.

Fr. John Zuhlsdorf (aka "Father Z" of the blog, What Does the Prayer Really Say?) joined us this Easter and he chanted, very beautifully, the Exsultet (see the Easter Vigil propers here).

Exsultet iam Angelica turba caelorum: exsultent divina mysteria:
et pro tanti Regis victoria, tuba insonet salutaris...

The chanting of the readings in Latin, starting with Genesis: "In the beginning, God created heaven and earth..."

I don't have pictures of what happened all along the way because I was video taping some with my iPhone.  Once again, I won't have time before next weekend to get it uploaded.

Father Z looks on.

Father Z gave a wonderful homily, speaking at one point to the converts as a convert himself.  He told them not to let up when the initial zeal wears off, and it will for many with time.  This is a point that Fr. Perrone has drilled home to the secular Carmelites.  Spiritual dryness comes.  God graces us with wonderful feelings when he is after our hearts, then he tests us to see if we will remain with him when he withdraws those gifts.  Just like in marriage, a spouse will persevere after the honeymoon is long over, to give to the other what is owed.  It's the same with the spiritual life.  We must continue to give of ourselves - to pray, to give God his due in worship, and to let our love for God flow into our interactions with others. This we must do even when we are not graced with zeal and good feelings, lest we fall into the trap of merely using God for what he can give.

I believe this is the incensing during the Solemn Lauds of Easter Day (seen in same link provided earlier), which comes after the ablutions.

2012 Christmas Season Pictures: Juventutem on Holy Innocents

My first opportunity to get some good shots of the beautiful Nativity at Assumption Grotto this year was at the Juventutem Michigan Mass on Friday, December 28th - the Feast of Holy Innocents.  Fr. Robert Slaton celebrated the Mass.

Here are a few pics, then you can follow the link to the gallery for the full set.  More pictures are coming, including those from the vigil Mass of the Solemnity of the Mother of God, and Epiphany.  You can get to other posts on this by clicking the 2012 Christmas Season label below the post.

With the table altar now removed, beautiful pictures like this are now possible.

Fr. Lee Acervo, the chaplain to Juventutem Michigan, was in attendance

Dr. Robert Moynihan on the Summorum Pontificum instruction concerns

A photo of history being made at Assumption Grotto as Mass is celebrated using the 1962 Missal
on the first day it was permitted by Summorum Pontificum on September 14, 2007.
Photo Post here; Fr. Perrone's homily here

I have not had as much time for blogging of late, but I have been following concerns about an instruction expected soon on Summorum Pontificum which permitted priests everywhere to celebrate Mass using the 1962 Missal.  The instruction has been anticipated for some time by those devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass, but it was not expected that it would contain any kind of restrictions.

I received an Inside the Vatican "News Flash" from Dr. Robert Moynihan.  In it, he does a very good job of capturing what is floating out there.  In the article and, at the bottom, are suggestions of what you can do.  I agree with Father Z who urged people to pray and fast for the Holy Father, rather than get hysteric.  There is also an online petition you can sign.  Follow the link to finish reading Dr. Moynihan's letter where you will find the necessary information and links.

As an aside, Inside the Vatican is one of very few publications to which I subscribe. You can subscribe to ITV too.  In that same link, I recommend that  you sign up for Dr. Moynihan's E-Letters/News Flashes.  You can follow them on Twitter, as well @InsideVatican.

Will a New Papal Document Curtail Use of the Old Mass?

On the internet, there are increasing worries among traditional Catholics that an upcoming Vatican Instruction on how to implement Summorum Pontificum will curtail use of the Old Mass
"Second-Class Catholics"?

Will the Vatican soon issue a document calling for some restrictions on the use of the old rite of the Mass?

The internet, especially in traditional Catholic circles, is abuzz with reports that this may be about to happen.

But for the moment, these reports are based only on rumors.

Officially, no one yet knows the content of the upcoming Vatican Instruction to give guidelines for the implementation of Summorum Pontificum -- the dramatic and controversial July 7, 2007 papal motu proprio in which Benedict XVI, after long hesitation, granted wider use of the old, pre-Vatican II liturgy, also known as the Tridentine liturgy or the Latin Mass.

The upcoming document is indeed being prepared; that much is certain.

It is said to bear the date of February 22 -- just four days from now.

But it is not likely to be made public on February 22, but some days or weeks later, as often happens with Roman documents, and the document can even be rewritten during that time, after the date it is signed.

So we may be in for a considerable period of uncertainty on this question. And that will naturally allow room for fears based on uncertain or partial information to grow.
According to unconfirmed "leaks" of portions of the document's contents, the Instruction will, somewhat unexpectedly, contain two clauses which will restrict the celebration of the old rite.

I say "somewhat unexpectedly" because the expectation for this document was that it would concretize what Benedict said in 2007 was his desire for a "generous" granting of permission to celebrate the old liturgy "widely."

It therefore seems strange to many that, if the reports are true, it may contain new restrictions, as if this would be out of keeping with Benedict's own expressed will.

Photos: First Mass of Rev. Charles White IV - Solemn High Mass - Pentecost 2009

Fr. Charles White IV of Assumption Grotto was ordained with five other men by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron on Saturday May 30th. Fr. White celebrated his First Mass on Pentecost at the parish. He celebrated a Mass in the Extraordinary Form (1962 Missal) and it was a Solemn High Mass. Newly ordained transitional deacon, John Dumas - also of Assumption Grotto - was the deacon of the Mass, and Fr. John Bustamante was sub-deacon. Fr. Paul Ward is seen in the photos in cope, as Assistant Priest. From Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described(Fortescue, O'Connell, Reid)(1):

....When a priest says or sings his first Mass, or first three Masses, he may be assisted by another priest. If it is a solemn Mass, the assistant priest may wear a cope. In this case many of the ceremonies performed by the ministers are modified.

A seat, a stool without a back, is prepared for the assistant priest (AP) near the sedilia, to the right of the deacon's place, facing down the church; or it may be to the lef of the subdeacon, so that the AP faces the altar....

Fr. Francis Dobrzenski, pastor of St. Joseph parish in Lake Linden, MI (Diocese of Marquette) delivered the sermon. Father was an instructor of theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary and served as spiritual director of college seminarians from 1999 - 2002. Fr. Dobrzenski has agreed to send me his excellent sermon for publishing after he gets back up north.

Fr. Eduard Perrone, Grotto's pastor, was conducting the orchestra and choir (music will be repeated for Corpus Christi on June 14th at Noon).

For those wondering, the Assumption Grotto altar boys are wearing their festive white cassocks, with red shoulder capes. These are worn mainly during Christmas season, but also come out on Pentecost. Throughout Easter Season, and on Corpus Christi, the white cassock and gold shoulder capes are worn. Ordinarily, they were black cassock with white surplice. The liturgical season changes in dress is a long-standing tradition at Assumption Grotto parish.

Photopost: 2009 Good Friday Service in Extraordinary Form

Like with my Holy Thursday 2009 pics, I will be editing this post with some info. It's late and I just want to get the pics out there for now. Some explanations will come, so be sure to check back in a few days.

There are some key moments missing in here. Notably, the veneration of the Cross in the sanctuary by the priests and altar boys. This is because I focused on capturing that part in video and could not take still shots. However, I will likley add pictures from last year because what I captured then, was very good. The altar boys are different, but the pics themselves are good stock.

If the embedded slideshow does not work fo you, see link below.

Archbishop Burke says "yes" to Latin Mass Society; Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor says "no"

News broke the other day about how Archbishop Burke had accepted the invitation of the Latin Mass Society to celebrate the usus antiquior at Westminster Cathedral, but Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, a staunch opponent of the TLM said, "no".

It is always customary for a bishop to have permission of the Ordinary of a diocese to celebrate Mass in his diocese. In an excellent commentary on this situation, Fr. Z explains protocol and how the Traditional Latin Mass community should carry on from here in that diocese. It is a good lesson for all to observe.

As an aside, I'm of the opinion that this bad thing will turn into a good thing for Westminster. Cardinal Murphy O'Connor is on his way out and the Holy See will be replacing him. Hopefully, it will be with someone who will, without hesitatation, exercise charity and pastoral sensitivity in taking down the proverbial brick wall in Westminster.

March 18: Extraordinary Form to be celebrated at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak

An interesting thing to note....

The Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak will be celebrating the usus antiquior on Wednesday, March 18, 2009. The celebrant will be Msgr. George Browne who regularly celebrates at St. Josaphat, among other places.

See more information in this PDF file.

Ok - so it is not a regular Sunday event. Just a reminder.....brick-by-brick. First a little exposure and let the demand grow. This won't be the last TLM at Shrine.

Sancta Missa Workshops on Extraordinary Form

I received these pictures and a link from Fr. Scott Haynes, SJC, who runs the Sancta Missa website for the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago. Assumption Grotto has one seminarian, Br. Matthew, with this religious community (seen in many of the slides and pics on the site), which is dedicated to a restoration of the sacred. They celebrate both forms of the Mass: Ordinary and Extraordinary. And, they have beautiful music in their liturgies, with several choirs, symphony, chant, etc (a must for Mass if you happen to be in Chicago!).

These pictures are from a recent workshop on the Extraordinary Form (aka, "Tridentine") held for the laity in the Chicago area. Father writes in his post:

VOLO, ILLINOIS - On Saturday, January 10, 2009, during the midst of a blizzard, the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius hosted a workshop for laity in the Extraordinary Form at Saint Peter's Church in Volo, Illinois. The parishioners of St. Peter's Church in Volo, Illinois, braved the snowstorm and thoroughly enjoyed the day of Solemn Liturgies and classes.

Here is a link to all of the pics from the January 10th workshop for laity, and explanations.

Below is a pic from the Mass

Teaching a class on the beauty of Mass in the Extraordinary Form is Fr. Frank Phillips, SJC - the founder of the order.

Here is the link again to all of the pictures, which has a list of forthcoming workshops and retreats (which are not limited to Chicago or Illinois). There is also information on how you can get them scheduled in your parish.

EDIT: Clicking around the site, I have found pictures of Br. Matthew receiving his habit.

Christmas 2008 - Midnight Mass in Extraordinary Form at Grotto: Photopost 3

After the altar is incensed, the priest, and other members in the sanctuary are incensed, followed by the faithful. In the photo above, the humeral veil is now draped over the shoulders of the subdeacon who uses it to hold the paten from the close of Offertory until after the Pater Noster.

The priest prays the words of Consecration....

The Elevation of the Host permits all to briefly adore Our Lord in the Eucharist.

The priest consumes the Body of Christ with Deacon and Subdeacon off to either corner, bowed in reverence.

Christmas 2008 - Midnight Mass in Extraordinary Form at Grotto: Photopost 1

A photo taken at Midnight Mass as the Gloria was well underway in the orchestra Mass. Alexandre Guilmant's 3rd Solemn Mass was conducted by Grotto's pastor, Rev. Eduard Perrone. During longer versions of the Gloria or Credo, the priests will sit - a signal the faithful follow, as well. As you will see below, in the Extraordinary Form, or Traditional Latin Mass, those wearing biretta's will tip them at the name of Jesus.

If you want to catch an orchestra or symphony Mass, there are still two opportunities: The 9:30am Mass on December 28th (Extraordinary Form), and the Noon Mass on Epiphany (Ordinary Form). These Masses will run between 1.5 and 2 hours, so plan accordingly. However, the time flies by very fast. Also, you will want to get there about 30-45 minutes ahead of the Mass (the sooner the better with regards to parking and seating).

This Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form was celebrated by Rev. Wolfgang Seitz, ORC. Rev. Paul Ward and Rev. John Bustamante, both Grotto associates, were Deacon and Subdeacon respectively.

You may wonder why there are no pictures of the orchestra. This has much to do with contractual issues so you won't see many, if at all.

Clicking on any pic will enlarge it, but I have recently discovered some kind of camera problem that is causing a haze or lack of clarity upon enlarging. More on this later.

A closeup of the above pic reveals a beautiful, detailed reflection, only hindered somewhat by the camera problem I am currently having.

Grotto altar boys will be dressed in the celebratory white cassocks with red shoulder capes throughout the Christmas season.

The Infant Jesus is draped, awaiting the blessing of the Creche which takes place before the Mass begins.

After the blessing took place, all left the Sanctuary and re-emerged moments later in the aisle, ready to process in for the beginning of Mass.

Several of these photos below may look alike. However, if you look carefully, you will notice that the formation of the three priests is different, as well as their position relative to the altar. Each of these things happen at specific points in the liturgy. I hope to come back to it in a future post which is why I am collecting photographs of these things. For example, the first two pics take place during the Confiteor - the first one of the celebrant, and the second part normally done by altar servers. There are times they bow straight forward, and other times they bow toward's each other. Understanding when these things happen during the respective prayers can signal a casual observer to know exactly where we are in the Mass. This is true throughout the Traditional Latin Mass when things like elbow movements can give you a clue as to which prayers are being recited silently.

These last two shots were taken during the Gloria, in wihch the celebrant chose to sit after he recited it from start to finish at the altar and awaited the orchestra to finish. It is a good time to sit in quiet meditation. At the name of Jesus, not only do the priests and deacons remove their birettas, but all should bow their heads in reverence for the name of Our Lord. This is exemplified by the altar boys who can often teach us subtle cues with regards to reverence.

More photos to come, but I need more time to process them.
