It's now Cardinal Dolan and Cardinal O'Brien

Cardinal Dolan receiving his red hat (Photo: Reuters)

This morning I was up early - very early, and saw Cardinals Dolan and O'Brien get their red hats.  I'm going to leave you with some news-links and blog-posts from yesterday and today.  This list will get updated as a few other sources cover it.

First, you can watch the On-Demand video, online at the Vatican website: http://www.vatican.va/video/

"One of the Most Energized Meetings at the Vatican"

That quote comes from the video below and when it comes to Timothy Cardinal Dolan, it is no surprise that he would liven up the Vatican. Here is a Rome Reports video about Cardinal Dolan's address (see full text of address here)

Magister: More Cardinals to be appointed in early 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI

Cardinal Raymond Burke being elevated at the
November 2010 consistory (Photo by Teak Phillips)

Veteran Vatican journalist, Sandro Magister says a consistory will be held on February 19, 2012 in which more Cardinals will be elevated by Pope Benedict XVI (possibly named as early as January 18th). As Magister points out, this means Cardinal-Electors named by Pope Benedict XVI will be in the majority.

The number of Cardinal-Electors is set at 120. A Cardinal may vote until he reaches the age of 80.   You can see in this Cardinal-Elector list at Catholic-Hierarchy who is about to turn 80 (hint: click on the birth date header to organize by age if it is jumbled)

The Vatican journalist explains the current situation:

There are currently 192 cardinals. Those under the age of eighty amount to 109, dropping to 107 on February 19 (in addition to Zen, in fact, the Portuguese José Saraiva Martins will turn 80 on January 6. This means that at the next consistory, there will be at least 13 new cardinals, but more likely 15 or more, considering that in the following months of 2012 another 11 cardinals will turn eighty.

Sandro Magister explains likely candidates and you can bet that speculation will turn into a whirlwind leading up to the notification expected in mid-January.

Magister believes Archbishop Dolan of New York will make this cut even though Cardinal Egan is not yet 80.  He turns 80 in late spring, not long after the consistory.

What about Detroit?

Archbishop Vigneron
elevates the Host at
Assumption Grotto on
August 15, 2009
There is no mention in his column about the Archdiocese of Detroit.  Some have speculated in the past that Detroit's red hat will be lost due to the decline in number of Catholics.   There can only be so many Cardinals in the US (though there is nothing written in stone).   Other cities, like Houston, have seen increasing numbers and it became a cardinalatial see in 2004 with the elevation of Cardinal DiNardo.

While Archbishop Vigneron may not make this cut, even though Cardinal Maida is now over 80, I'm not convinced that Detroit has lost it's red hat.  Detroit is ranked 7th in Diocese of the United States based on 2004 statistics (which is all I can find at the moment).  Then, 33.4% of the 1.48 million people in it's boundaries were Catholics.  The diocesan page shows a figure for 2006 of 32.5% for 1.47 million.   Without later data from Detroit, and the other "red-hat" sees, it is hard to get a good picture of where Detroit truly stands.  If anyone knows of data which shows a later ranking of these sees, including Detroit, please drop some links or info into my combox.

The Catholic Hierarchy website is a very interesting place to sift through data.  Along with the list of Cardinal Electors shown above, you can find a listing of all past consistories

Here again, is  a link to Sandro Magister's article: Vatican Diary / The next cardinals, name by name

Cardinal Burke receives his red-hat (Photo: Teak Phillips/St. Louis Review)

We can now leave behind the "Cardinal-designate" preceding the names of the men named by Pope Benedict to receive the red hat today.

It is now, Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Weurl, Cardinal Ranjith, Cardinal Bartolucci.... etc.

If you go to EWTN now, you can watch the replay on what was live at 4:00am our time here in Detroit today.   There are mobile options too.  Go to this page at EWTN to get the audio or video stream.

Archbishops Burke, Wuerl among 24 to become Cardinals

Cardinal-designate Raymond L. Burke

This post has been updated to include official statements by Cardinals-delegate Burke and Wuerl.

Along with American, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, the archbishop of Washington D.C. was also named in the consistory of cardinals.  Today's Bollettino shows them being elevated on November 20.

24 men were named Cardinals in the consistory which came at the end of today's general audience, four of them over 80, thus not eligible to vote in a papal conclave.  10 are Italian (eight of them under 80).  There are two Germans, a Pole, a Swede, a Spaniard (non-voting), four African (including the Patriarch of Egypt), two Americans, a Brazlilian, one from Equador, and one who was expected from Sri-Lanka....Archbishop Ranjith.

It would seem that the Italians have once again increased their voting power in the conclave.  However, I am more interested in how aligned these men are with Pope Benedict's line of thought on many things, including the liturgy.  This I leave for the Catholic pundits (links to places discussing these kinds of things near the bottom).

Pardon any typos, for some reason my copy/paste features was throwing a nutty.

10 are members of the Roman Curia:

10 Residential Bishops.

N.B. Type a name into the search tool at Catholic Hierarchy to learn more about each.

    Cardinal-designate Wuerl

  • Antonio Naguib, Patriarch of Alexandria and the Copts (Egypt)
  • Paolo Romeo, archbishop of Palermo
  • Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising (Germany)
  • Kazimierze Nycz, Arcbishop of Warsaw (Poland)
  • Donald William Weurl, Archbishop of Washington (USA)
  • Laurent Monsengwo Pasinja, Archbishop of Kinshasa (Congo)
  • Medardo Joseph Mazombwe, archbishop emeritus of Lusaka (Zambia)
  • Albert Malcom Ranjith Patanbendige Don, Archbishop of Colomob (Sri Lanka)
  • Raul Eduardo Vela Chiriboga, Archbishp of Quito (Ecuador)
  • Raymundo Damasceno Assis, archbishop of Aparacedia (Brazil)
Those over 80, thus not eligible to vote in a papal conclave:
  • Elio Sgreccia (Italy)
  • Jose Manuel Estepa Llaurens (Spain)
  • Walter Brandmuller (Germany)
  • Domenico Bartolucci (Italy)

Statements and Related:

Two US Cardinals-designate; two contrasting views on canons 915/916
An interesting thing to note about the two American's to be elevated, is the contrasting views they hold on the matter of withholding Holy Communion from pro-abort Catholic politicians.  As Prefect of the Signatura - the Church's near equivalent of a supreme court, he is involved with interpreting canon Law.  These two men will undoubtedly spend at least a short time together, and I'm sure they will both rise to the occasion.

Where to catch the "Red Hat" pre-game show tonight...

(with plenty of photos).

Stay tuned tomorrow...

The Catholic blogosphere's favorite past-time is underway as anticipation grows that Pope Benedict XVI will name Cardinals in a consistory tomorrow.  It gives the men, and the tailors making their new red garbs until Christ the King on November 30, 2010. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke is considered a shoe-in.  I will let you read other speculations about what will take place on these shores and abroad in the links below.

I may get to post the names before leaving tomorrow morning, if it appears on the Bollettino, but if not, I will leave you with a few places to watch for news, posts, and the ever lively comboxes.

I will be unable to blog on this tomorrow beyond anything that is available veerrrryyy early, so I am going to leave you with some links to existing "pre-game" shows, and some places to watch tomorrow.

'RED HAT" PRE-GAME SHOW NEWS & BLOGPOSTS
A few sites to watch tomorrow:

Footnote: Back in August when a number of people thought the consistory would not come until spring because more Cardinals are expected to turn 80 in the coming months, at which time they are not eligible to vote in a Papal conclave. Ed Peters pointed pointed out some interesting stats and played with a few other numbers which had me wondering whether we would see the number of Italians shrink.

On that note, here are some interesting pages to find current and historical facts about bishops, dioceses and more at Catholic Hierarchy:

Red Hat Speculation Begins...

Before I send you off into the pregame show of an ecclesial spectator "sport" that comes around every few years (the making of Cardinals - known more plainly as - a consistory), I want to toss in another item that I was unable to post on last week.

Blogging Canonist Ed Peters was recently at a Canon Law Conference at the beautiful Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Also there, was another blogging canonist, Fr. John Boyle, of the UK who is spending a year in Marquette, Michigan (I got to know Fr. Boyle through blogging and we hope to see him at Assumption Grotto should he venture down to the lower part of the "mit"!).  Also there, was Father Z (the three are in the pic below and Father Z promises us that he is not that short, but that these guys are just that tall).

There has been periodic discussion in the blogosphere about the next consistory, ever since the last consistory.  As I mentioned in my recent post on Archbishop Burke (which has been updated, by the way, after I noticed that I missed his membership in the Congregation for Clergy), the next conistory is rumored to take place anywhere from this fall to early spring 2011.  I have mentioned in other comboxes, that I believe it will take place in 2011 because of the number of Cardinals Electors soon to be turning 80 (if this list is not organized by age, then click the "Birthdate" link and they will appear at the top of the list).

Dr. Peters looks at this much deeper and his analysis left me hopeful that another rumor would not come to pass.  Many have speculated in recent years that Detroit will lose it's red hat because we can't tip the balance of American "Cardinal Electors" to say... the Italians (bear in mind that there is a cap at age 80, at which time a Cardinal is no longer eligible to vote in a papal conclave).  But, I like the rationale used by Dr. Peters and it gives me hope that Detroit will keep it's red hat and that Archbishop Vigneron may very well be among those named in the consistory.  Just how many Americans might we see elevated?  Follow the link to read his most interesing (and fun) analysis.

Musings on the next Consistory

In the mood for some completely personal musings on an important topic that none of us have the slightest control over? Okay, how about papal elections? Rome basically shuts down in August, and here in the USA summer vacation is winding its way toward Labor Day. So it’s a great time to speculate on the next Consistory, rumored to be scheduled for as early as this Fall, but more likely in the Spring of 2011. Or, not. We'll see.

Here is a pic of Archbishop Burke and Ed Peters at the recent conference (hmmmm  - as Father Z pointed out earlier, methinks Archbishop Burke isn't that short, but it's that Peters is that tall).  As an aside, Dr. Peters is speaking to his new boss.  He was recently named a Referendarius by Pope Benedict XVI.  If you don't know what that is.... go have a read.

Let the [speculation] games begin!
