New Call to Holiness Website - Conference June 11, 2011 - Register!

Click pic to visit the Call to Holiness Website (scroll down)

From the CTH Newsletter about the 13th Conference:

Mark your calendars! Call to Holiness (CTH) will hold its 13th conference all day Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Burton Manor in Livonia.

A Response to Call to Action
Call to Holiness was formed by the grace of God to shine the light of truth on the errors being promoted by Call to Action at their Detroit conference at Cobo Hall in November 1996. Call to Action (CTA) is an organization which dissents from Catholic Church authority and magisterial teachings. When Call to Action returns to Detroit in 2011, Call to Holiness will respond with a simultaneous conference with speakers faithful to the Magisterium. [continue reading the newsletter released in the summer of 2010 at the CTH website]
Archbishop Vigneron  has offered his support and blessing on the event:

HELP GET THE WORD OUT
There's so much more at the Call to Holiness website.  Please go there, click around, print off some posters and brochures and put them out (always obtain permission by the pastor before putting them out in parishes, and consider pinning some up around town where there are bulletin boards).  Most importantly, register now and reserve your seat.  Also consider donating to help with costs.

Bloggers, Tweeters, people on Facebook - please help get the word out about this conference.

PAST CONFERENCES

You may have heard of the Call To Holiness Conferences held [semi] annually in the Detroit area. These conferences serve as a faithful Catholic contrast to the dissenting Call To Action thing, which also started in Detroit.

There will be a benefit dinner to support the 2011 Call To Holiness Conference.

Update - Call to Holiness - Audio, Video, and pics

If you missed the Call to Holiness or were not close enough to commute, you can purchase audio and video of the conference.

The pictures were edited, and uploaded early Sunday.

I have not had time to edit photos from yesterday's 9:30am Solemn High Mass with Fr. Z, nor the Noon Mass with Bishop Athanasius Schneider.  It may be a few days before I get time to do those.

Photopost: Call to Holiness 2009

Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, author of Dominus Est was one of many speakers at the 12th Call to Holiness in metro Detroit at the National Shrine of the Little Flower.

I would like to give a special thanks to the Blessed Mother, whose help I always seek when photographing liturgical events and conferences.  I credit her and my guardian angel for helping me to see the beauty of the background and integrating it for compositions most pleasing to the eye.  I was especially blessed this year with the help of St. Therese, whose feast day had just passed on October 1st.  The parish was decked out with large photographs and roses which are seen throughout these photos.  Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

The event was held at the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Dr. Michael P. Foley spoke on, "How the Mass shaped the western world".

In his talk, "Treasures of the Mass", Fr. Eduard Perrone, Pastor of Assumption Grotto, spoke about the parts of the Mass - ordinary and extraordinary - with the aid of demonstrations on the two large screens.

Bishop Schneider looks up at the on screen demonstrations.

People view liturgical text on the big screen during Fr. Perrone's talk

Bishop Schneider gives his talk, "The Sacredness of the Holy Eucharist and the Fathers of the Church"

Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, aka Fr. Z, speaks on, "Mystery Both Fearsome and Alluring: Holy Mass and True Active Participation".

Quotable Fr. Z: "The greatest form of active participation is worthy reception of Holy Communion"

Dr. Ronald Prowse of Sacred Heart Major Seminary teaches basic chant in his talk, "Let's Sing Sacred Music". It later used in the parish vigil Mass, with the Gregorian notation and Latin shown on the big screens.

Bishop Schneider was the celebrant for the 4:30pm vigil Mass.

Recently ordained, Fr. Charles White IV with his eyes fixed on the Precious Blood during Elevation of the Chalice.

Awwwwww!

If you want to see all of the pictures taken from the day (118 in all), see the slideshow below, or use on of the several options below to view them directly in my smugmug gallery.  Bloggers and webmasters are free to use them for stories, but please provide a courtesy link back to this post (copy shortcut on title or timestamp link at the bottom).  For professional use, please contact me at TeDeumBlog@gmail.com

You can start the slideshow from the beginning by placing your cursor over to the left on the filmstrip and an arrow should appear. You can also change the speed. I recommend "fast".  If it doesn't work for you, use the gallery link below.

As mentioned yesterday, Fr. Zuhlsdorf will be the main celebrant for the 9:30am Mass which will be a Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

At Noon today, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC will be the celebrant at the ordinary form Mass, which is partically in Latin and always celebrated ad orientem.

Updated at 9:00pm to include Abp Vigneron's letter on the Call to Holiness Conference.

Grotto Mass notes for this Sunday...

With the Call to Holiness this weekend and several guest speakers in from out of town, people are wondering who may have the main Masses.

The choir was told on Wednesday before our rehearsal that Fr. Z will have the 9:30am Mass and it will be a Solemn High Mass.  As we have on most Sundays, there will be chant and sacred polyphony.

I believe Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC will have the Noon Mass.  This Mass is in the Ordinary Form and is partially in the vernacular and in Latin (Eucharistic Prayer).  As with all Masses at Grotto, even the ordinary form is celebrated ad orientem, at the wall altar.

If you have not been to Grotto - we have BBQ'd hamburgers, hot dogs and sausages most Sundays after the 9:30am and Noon Masses.  Just follow the crowd into the school.  We have an excellent giftshop/bookstore, as well.

I'll share pics of Call to Holiness and the Sunday Masses as soon as I get the photos edited.

Please pray for the speakers of Call to Holiness and for participants.  May God's grace guide them.

You may want to follow the blog of Fr. Z while he is here in Detroit.  He is handy with a camera and has been taking some.....well....interesting tours of the city.

Speakers: Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Karaganda, Kazakhstan (author of Dominus Est), Fr. John Zuhlsdorf (aka "Fr. Z" – What Does the Prayer Really Say?), Michael P. Foley (professor/author), Rev. Eduard Perrone (Pastor, Assumption Grotto in Detroit), and Dr. Ronald Prowse (Director of Music at Sacred Heart Major Seminary). John Vleko (Morally Responsible Investing) will MC the event.

From Fr. Perrone's column this Sunday:

The thing most pressing on my mind these days, among the others which vex it, is the near-approach of the Call to Holiness Conference. As I already pre-announced, this will take place October 10th at Shrine (now National Shrine) of the Little Flower in Royal Oak. Grotto friends, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, of the Holy Cross Order will speak, as will Fr. John T. Zuhlsdorf. Michael Foley will demonstrate how much of Western culture derives from the Catholic Mass. Ron Prowse of Sacred Heart Seminary will lead the participants in a mini-course on Gregorian Chant. I am now hard at work on my own talk which is to be a blow-by-blow explanation of the Mass, its ceremonies, words and gestures, with a look at both the new (Ordinary) form and the Tridentine (Extraordinary). What makes me particularly enthused about the presentation I am working on is not so much the talk itself (the attendees will judge its worth) but the audio visuals that I hope will make it a most interesting presentation. Thanks to the technological knowhow of Father Bustamante and his patience, there should be a large-screen video component to the talk that will show closeups of the priest, his vestments, gestures, etc. while I narrate pertinent facts about the meaning or history of these things. Shrine of the Little Flower Church has this visual capability and we will utilize it in an appropriate way: to illustrate a talk. In the process of making my preparations, I am learning many things about the Mass that I did not know, or that I knew but dimly. It has been an enlightening discovery which I hope to share with you. To do that you must come to the Conference and take in some of the rich offerings that have been provided for your soul. There’s a cut off date for pre-registration. I encourage you to register now for it. You can get a better idea of what the Conference is about by taking a look at the website, www.calltoholiness.com

October 10th - the Twelfth Call to Holiness Conference - Detroit

The 12th Call to Holiness Conference is taking place in metro Detroit on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan. The conference theme for this year is: Treasures of the Mass.

Speakers: Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Karaganda, Kazakhstan (author of Dominus Est), Fr. John Zuhlsdorf (aka "Fr. Z" – What Does the Prayer Really Say?), Michael P. Foley (professor/author), Rev. Eduard Perrone (Pastor, Assumption Grotto in Detroit), and Dr. Ronald Prowse (Director of Music at Sacred Heart Major Seminary). John Vleko (Morally Responsible Investing) will MC the event.

For schedule, speaker topics, and registration, and other information, please go the Call to Holiness – Treasures of the Mass page.
Folks, this is one of the most economical conferences you will find of this nature (aside from EWTN's free Family Celebration). It is only $25 for adults, $10 for students and FREE for seminarians. There is a $5.00 added fee for those buying tickets at the door.

Any help in getting the word out on this by fellow Catholic bloggers would be appreciated.

Call to Holiness: Treasures of the Mass - October 10, 2009 - Royal Oak, MI

Click the pic for a PDF to see the registration form more clearly and to print it out.

Call to Holiness will hold a conference on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 8:30am to 4:15pm (with registration starting at 7:00am).

It will be held at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan which has a large seating capacity in two tiers.

There are some really great speakers lined up!

First, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, ORC of Karaganda, Kazakhstan will speak on The Sacredness of the Holy Eucharist and the Fathers of the Church.

You may recall that His Excellency is the author of the excellent new book, Dominus Est, on reception of Holy Communion. It was published by the Vatican's own library last year. Bishop Schneider has a PhD in Patristics and his book looks closely at the reception of Communion in the Catholic Church. It was excerpted in the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano about a year ago: Historical-Liturgical Notes on the Rite of the Eucharist. He also brings a unique perspective, having made his First Holy Communion in secrecy within the former Soviet Union. See more posts at Te Deum Laudamus on Bishop Schneider, including photo-coverage of his visit to the US in July 2008 (scroll).

Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, aka, "Fr. Z" of the well-trafficked blog, What Does the Prayer Really Say?, and column of the same name in The Wanderer, will be at the conference.

The title of his talk is: Mystery Both Fearsome and Alluring: Holy Mass and True Active Participation.

Assumption Grotto's pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone, will speak on Treasures of the Mass Explored. Father is a gifted speaker. He is diocesan priest, but also a secular Carmelite. When he speaks on any spiritual topic he goes into depths and into angles often not explored in these times. All that he offers is timeless and most applies to either form of the Mass, ordinary and extraordinary.

While there may be yet another speaker, the fourth and last one listed, is Dr. Michael P. Foley who will talk on How the Mass Shaped the Western World. Click for more about Dr. Foley.

Call to Holiness 2007: Dr. Robert Fastiggi

I mentioned in my previous post that I would supply info for how to get video and audio of the Call to Holiness 2007 talks. I decided to first make this post because it is the perfect lead-in for plugging those things. I loved all of the talks, but this may very well have been my favorite. It was content rich, well-ordered and referenced, and just plain simple to understand the way the speaker explains his subject.

Dr. Robert Fastiggi of Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit gave an excellent talk entitled, "Can the Church err?". In that talk, he explained the different levels of assent, for which he provided an outline. In perfect professor fashion, he layered his information, building a foundation, then stacking the bricks. I watched his talk again on DVD last night and will likely let it run in the background over and again until the information is ingrained.

Dr. Fastiggi provides the perfect package for dealing with dissenting Catholics because it is a primary area of confusion among disoriented theologians, who have left in their wake, disoriented Catholics. In fact, Dr. Fastiggi gets into some examples - in particular, that of the laicized priest, Professor Daniel McGuire, whose disorientation as a theologian was the subject of a strong statement by the USCCB recently. If someone with whom you are discussing an issue doesn't get these basic things taught by Dr. Fastiggi, you won't get any further. Hence, it becomes a starting point for any good dialogue on Catholic matters.

Call to Holiness: 2007 - Bishop Bruskewitz at OLMC

Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln Nebraska also spoke at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (OLMC), in Wyandotte, Michigan, after he spoke at St. Rene Goupil on the East Side of metro Detroit. His talk was entitled, The One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic, Church.

My next post will give you information on how you can obtain audio and/or video of these conferences. I have already received my DVD's and my MP3-CD.

The pictures came out a little dark, but not too bad considering no use of flash to distract the speakers and which minimized distraction of participants. Quality I would like is still not there, but much of it has to do with the continuous movement of the speakers, without the aid of flash.

Call to Holiness 2007: Dr. Alice von Hildebrand at OLMC

Here are a couple of photos of Dr. Alice von Hildebrand at the Call to Holiness - Our Lady of Mt. Carmel site. Dr. von Hildebrand is a well known Catholic philosopher, theologian, author and lecturer who spoke on the topic of "Women & the Priesthood".

This talk and all others from the Call to Holiness can be obtained on DVD, CD or MP3 CD. Details will follow.

This is the same photo cropped two different ways.

The photos below were sent to me from Debbie Bloomfield, wife of Deacon Richard Bloomfield seen seated with Bishop Bruskewitz and Dr. von Hildebrand in the bottom picture. I am assuming this was taken at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel rectory at lunch time.

Call to Holiness 2007: Bishop Bruskewitz at St. Rene

Grotto Photographer Jeff Williams has emailed me these photos of Bishop Bruskewitz from the St. Rene site - one of two locations to which each speaker traveled. Jeff explained that he too was dealing with the challenging lighting conditions without flash.

The Bishop Speaks!

Below, Bishop Bruskewtiz is speaks with Fr. Eduard Perrone - the pastor of Assumption Grotto in Detroit. Patrick Fabian of OLMC, who was assisting that day, looks on.

Call to Holiness 2007: Marcus Grodi at OLMC

Tomorrow I will post some photos from the St. Rene Goupil site that fellow Grotto photographer Jeff Williams has sent me. For now, I leave you with some shots of Marcus Grodi at the OLMC site.

As many of you already know, Marcus - a former Protestant minister - is host of The Journey Home on EWTN, and he is responsible for The Coming Home Network where he helps ministers with their transition into the Catholic Faith. In the first talk following Mass, Marcus talked on the Biblical Defense of Catholicism.

A Scene from Call to Holiness
I couldn't resist photographing two dads cradling their baby girls in the back of OLMC during the talk given by Marcus. I bring to you photos of our youngest CTH attendees: Maria (in the foreground), and Margaret - posted with permission of their parents.

Go ahead, say it: Awwwwwwwwwwww.....

The slight blur is the result of rocking daddies, dim environment, and no use of flash.
