Maundy Thursday

Eucharistic Procession in 2009, to the Altar of Repose, following the Holy Thursday Mass.
Rose pedals were dropped by children, just ahead of the Blessed Sacrament,
tracing the path to the Altar of Repose

As I mentioned the other day, I won't be taking photos this year during the Holy Week liturgies. If you want a flavor of what is to come, beginning tonight at 7:00 PM, view the slide-show below.

The slideshow is from the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Assumption Grotto. I don't think I can surpass this. For the most part, the only thing that would be different are some altar boys who could be a foot or two taller, and our pastor may have a few more gray hairs. There may also be a difference in some of the tools and items used, such as the bowls. Next year I hope to get some updated pictures.  Since the 2007 motu proprio which allowed for the celebration of the Mass using the 1962 Missal, such things have been evolving. Early on, the parish had to make-do with what was available.

Now, if you are looking for the Holy Week schedule liturgy and Confession schedule, go to the homepage for Assumption Grotto (assumptiongrotto.com), and scroll.  There will be an orchestral Mass on Sunday at 9:30 AM and you can find details for that on Grotto's homepage, as well.  The music will be repeated again at the Noon Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday, which is next week.  Usually, Extraordinary Form Mass (1962 Missal) is at 9:30 AM, but it often moves to the Noon time-slot with the orchestral Mass.  I need to find out if that is the case, but will wait until after Easter to ask Fr. Perrone since he is deep into the altar boy retreat at the parish and preparing for the Triduum, which begins tonight at 7:00 PM with Maundy Thursday Mass.

I have found that the 1962 Missal much more spiritual, especially during this most sacred week.  I would encourage you to read through what is in the Missal for tonight.  If you do not have one, reference what is at the excellent, Tridentine Latin Missal Project website, for Maundy Thursday (note that it is in a nice, printable format).

One thing to note about Maundy Thursday, is that following the Mass and eucharistic procession to the Altar of Repose, the parish church will be open until Midnight so that you can remain with the Lord, mindful of his agony in the garden.  Also, you will see in this slideshow, the stripping of the altars.  Fr. Perrone, priests, and some altar boys are also seen praying in the sanctuary following the Mass.

In slide-shows I will offer the next few days from the Triduum in the Extraordinary Form, you will notice pictures where the hand of the celebrant is being kissed by the deacon of the Mass. These are called the solita oscula, or liturgical kisses. Remember, that no matter how sinful a priest is, when he celebrates Mass, he stands in persona Christi (and the same holds true when he is in the Confessional). His sacred hand is kissed, as is the object he receives or gives. I explain the solita oscula more in a post dedicated to this subject

If this slideshow does not work for you, see the link below. I recommend setting it to "Fast"
