Late Term Abortion Supporter, and Catholic, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius Tapped by Obama

UPDATED: Related links added.

Original cartoon of John Francis Borra, SFO, used with permission.
Please see terms of use at his blog, Veritats: The Cartoon. Below this cartoon he explains:
This cartoon illustrates the deception, slander and manipulation emblematic of Kathleen Sebelius' tenure as Kansas governor. Initially published in July 2007, it depicts then-AG Paul Morrison's press conference, during which he disparaged his predecessor's investigation and subsequent charges against Wichita abortionist George Tiller. Morrison, aided by a one-million-dollar smear campaign funded by George Tiller's PAC, had just unseated Phil Kline as the state's attorney general. Tiller's investment in both Sebelius and Morrison had begun paying dividends.

The perfect storm for the USCCB...

Just when the pro-life movement thought Kathleen Sebelius' close ties with the Butcher of of Kansas, George Tiller, would end her bid as head of Health and Human Services, Obama has gone forward with his selection.

Go read: Obama taps Sebelius for HHS secretary, posted 21 minutes ago as of this entry. Here's the relevant excerpt.

WASHINGTON – Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is President Barack Obama's choice for secretary of health and human services, a White House source said Saturday.

The source, who was not authorized to speak on the record, said Obama will formally announce the nomination on Monday.

Sebelius, 60, was an early Obama supporter. She picked his presidential campaign over that of Hillary Rodham Clinton, now the secretary of state. Sebelius worked tirelessly for Obama's bid and was a top surrogate to women's groups.

[snip]

Abortion foes strongly oppose Sebelius because she once had a reception attended by a late-term abortion provider who now faces criminal charges. Democrats say there was never any doubt that Obama would appoint an HHS secretary who supports abortion rights.

Go read more about Gov. Sebelius at the blog of John Francis Borra, who is from Kansas, her home state (scroll).

Go read more about George Tiller, who performs abortions at any point of pregnancy.

An Open Letter to US Catholic Bishops regarding National Catholic Reporter's Article: I am a Pro-Choice Catholic

To all who read this open letter to US Bishops and the article about which it is written: Please consider emailing this post to your local bishop's office or printing it and sending it via mail. Be sure to include a printout of the linked article at the National Catholic Reporter. You may also contact the USCCB's office for pro-life activities at: prolife@usccb.org. Above all....pray that they read it.

Here is a permalink to this blogpost

EDIT: This post will be updated with additional links as articles and commentaries are made available. Be sure to read the commentary by Ed Peters, JD, JCD under my open letter to the US bishops at the bottom of this post.

To US Catholic Bishops:

I wish to express my greatest desires that you receive many graces during this Lenten season. I thank all of you for your service and dedication as successors to the apostles.

I ran across something this morning that left me deeply troubled and would like to share my concern.

My attention was drawn to an article which was published online by the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) on February 26, 2009, by Kate Childs Graham, entitled: I am a Pro-Choice Catholic. It is in a high-traffic section of the site, namely - it's blog, under Young Voices. This, in itself, leads me to believe that young people are being exploited by dissident Catholics.

This article, published online by a Catholic newspaper, is an essay by a young woman about her journey from a pro-life position and activity, to a so-called, "pro-choice" position. After giving several reasons for her change of heart, she concludes (emphasis mine in bold):

Finally, I am a prochoice Catholic because my Catholic faith tells me I can be. The Catechism reads, “[Conscience] is man’s most secret core and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths.” Even St. Thomas Aquinas said it would be better to be excommunicated than to neglect your individual conscience. So really, I am just following his lead. After years of research, discernment and prayer, my conscience has been well informed. Being a prochoice Catholic does not contradict my faith; rather, in following my well-informed conscience, I am adhering to the central tenet of Catholic teaching -- the primacy of conscience.

First, neither Ms. Graham nor the editors at the National Catholic Reporter apparently understand that conscience must be properly formed with the mind of the Church. Upon a quick review of the article, you will see that there are many areas where the mind of the Church is absent and Her teachings distorted.

It brings into question the suitability of those responsible for it's publication to serve as editors and publishers of any Catholic newspaper. It also calls into question the suitability for the National Catholic Reporter to be sold or distributed in any Catholic diocese, at the parish level, or otherwise. In this instance, and I believe in others, the NCR is being used as an instrument to sow dissent and to undermine the efforts of our shepherds to teach the truths of our Catholic faith.

Second, Ms. Graham's erroneous position on conscience, citing St. Thomas Aquinas, comes months after similar arguments were brought forth by pro-choice Catholic politicians and educators. Is this a fruit of those efforts made publicly visible?

Her letter is a sad manifestation of the state of poor catechesis in the United States. The author deserves our deepest prayers, as do the misguided publishers and staff of the National Catholic Reporter who have brought it to the world online [EDIT: If it disappears, feel free to request a copy through my email address below. I have downloaded it for permanent reference].

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Heb 13:9). Yet, the National Catholic Reporter, with this publication, will have us believe that Our Lord is ever changing with the world. While Scripture admonishes us to "beware of all sorts of strange teachings", the same newspaper does not promote sound doctrine, but feeds on man's fallen nature for people to follow "their own desires and insatiable curiosity". Authors at the NCR "stopped listening to the truth" and it's readers are feeding heavily on their dissenting arguments (2 Tim 4:3-4).

There is a propensity of certain Catholic newspapers and periodicals, including the NCR, to advance the ideals, wishes and desires of poorly catechized people, in direct conflict with clear and consistent Catholic teaching. Many of these things are nothing more than the pursuit of the very things to which our fallen human nature is attracted. Rather than aiding people in developing virtue to fight the effects of Original Sin these sources enable readers to persist in this misguided pursuit. In the process, they pull in more people every day.

It is my hope that you will read the article in it's entirety, and consider a formal review of some of the leading Catholic newspapers and periodicals in the United States. I am not asking for an exhaustive review of every single publication as this would be impossible. However, we need our bishops to inform us of sources that are advancing teachings which are foreign to our faith. This could easily be made available on the USCCB website.

In the meanwhile, I hope and pray the USCCB will see it prudent to address this particular article given it's status on the world wide web. I am sending a copy of this post to prolife@usccb.org. Please consider the volume of Catholic readers who visit the National Catholic Reporter online, as well as the many Catholics who read the print edition.

Be assured of my deepest prayers for all of you. I continue to ask my readers, as I do now in this blogpost, to make a holy hour each week for US Catholic Bishops. May our prayers help you with the many crosses you carry, especially for what lies ahead in our country.

Thank you for taking the time to read my open letter.

Protections for Medical Workers Being Removed by Obama

From LifeNews:

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The White House quietly announced on Friday that President Barack Obama is starting the process of overturning protections President Bush put in place to make sure medical staff and centers are not forced to do abortions. The move is the latest that will add to Obama's growing pro-abortion record.

Existing federal laws already make it so doctors and hospitals are not required to perform abortions. Because those laws aren't always followed, the Bush administration added additional protections.

Bush officials noted a pattern of grant recipients being unaware of or flouting existing laws protecting medical professionals’ rights of conscience. So, HHS enacted the new regulations to require grantees to certify compliance with them in order to receive funds.

In August, 2008 the Department of Health and Human Services proposed regulations to strengthen those existing laws. The regulations were finalized on December 18, 2008 and went into effect January 20, 2009.

Abortion advocates complained about the new regulations and made false claims that they would somehow deny women access to birth control even though the regulations do not limit or restrict any legal practice or product.

BREAKING: Bishop Martino sends second letter to Sen Bob Casey; Issues Official Notice on Worthy Reception of Holy Communion

Two key items showed up on the Diocese of Scranton's 2009 page for Press Releases, both with today's date of February 26, 2009: 1) A 2nd letter sent to Senator Bob Casey from Bishop Martino and, 2) An Official Notice on worthy reception of Holy Communion which states that all ministers, ordinary and extraordinary, are to deny Communion to those whose worthiness to receive Holy Communion is publicly known.

In a followup to a letter sent to Senator Bob Casey back in late January, Scranton's chief shepherd, Bishop Martino has called on the politician, again, to rescind his vote.

In the first letter, the bishop said:

“Your failure to reverse this vote will regrettably mean that you persist formally in cooperating with the evil brought about by this hideous and unnecessary policy,”
Some have wondered whether an excommunication announcement is forthcoming (bishops don't necessarily excommunicate people, they just let them know that they've excommunicated themselves by their actions).

Today, another letter to the Catholic senator has appeared on the diocesan website, as follows (emphases mine in bold'comments bracketed in red):

The following letter has been sent to Sen. Bob Casey:

Dear Senator Casey,

It is a matter of deep concern that your recent vote against the Mexico City Policy [this was actually a vote against the recent Martinez Amendment, but ultimately against the Mexico City Policy, but the MCP is indeed being misrepresented....read on] is continually misrepresented by your staff as a pro-life vote intended to promote “contraception and other family planning that avoid unintended pregnancies” (Times-Tribune, February 6, 2009).

The Mexico City Policy is, first and foremost, about abortion, not about family planning. First put in place in 1984, the policy required all non-governmental organizations that receive federal funding to refrain from performing or promoting abortion services abroad. The policy required such organizations to agree as a condition for receiving U.S. foreign aid dollars that they would “neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations.” The policy included exceptions for abortions done in cases of rape, incest or life-threatening conditions.

Furthermore, the Mexico City Policy did not take funds away from family planning; its effect is quite the opposite. Tom McCluskey of the Family Research Council reported the following: “. . .The Mexico City policy halts U.S. family planning funds from going to foreign . . . [NGOs] that perform abortions or ‘actively promote’ abortion as a method of family planning in other countries. . . The effect of President Obama rescinding the Mexico City Policy is that now millions ($461 million in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008) of dollars are taken away from family planning groups that do not promote abortions, and delivered into the hands of organizations that are the most militant in promoting abortion as a population-control method—especially in countries that find abortion objectionable on moral grounds” (my emphasis). Contrary to the claims of your staff, the absence of “Mexico City” regulations insures (1) that money is taken away from family planning, (2) that abortion is promoted as a method of family planning, and (3) that countries that have moral and cultural objections to abortion are encouraged to abandon their policies against it.

Finally, it is never permissible to use immoral means such as artificial contraception to achieve a good end, namely, the reduction of unplanned pregnancies. In fact, the mistaken view that artificial contraception may be used to regulate population growth and the size of families has led to countless evils in America and abroad, including the attitude that having and raising children is a burden to be avoided. This attitude has contributed mightily to the acceptability of abortion as a means of contraception both at home and abroad.

My letter of January 30 urging you to rescind your vote on the Mexico City Policy was in no way mistaken regarding the nature and the effect of President Obama’s order to rescind America’s long-standing policy to avoid using U.S. tax dollars to support organizations that promote abortion abroad. It is imperative that this fact be made known to the public.

It is also imperative that there be utter clarity when it comes to the teaching of the Church on matters that pertain to the taking of innocent life and the special responsibilities that fall to you, Senator, as a lawmaker to oppose abortion and other clear evils.

In closing, I refer you to the words of Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, to President Obama urging him to retain the Mexico City Policy.

The Mexico City Policy . . . has wrongly been attacked as a restriction on foreign aid for family planning. In fact, it has not reduced such aid at all, but has ensured that family planning funds are not diverted to organizations dedicated to performing and promoting abortions instead of reducing them. Once the clear line between family planning and abortion is erased, the idea of using family planning to reduce abortions becomes meaningless, and abortion tends to replace contraception as the means for reducing family size. A shift toward promoting abortion in developing nations would also increase distrust of the United States in these nations, whose values and culture often reject abortion, at a time when we need their trust and respect (January 23, 2009).

Sincerely,

Most Reverend Joseph F. Martino, D.D., Hist. E.D.
Bishop of Scranton

At the same time, the Diocese of Scranton has issued the following. It's too long to paste in here, and is well worth reading in it's entirety (see link below), but I give you the all too relevant ending:

In 2004, the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) instructed the Bishops of the United States as follows:

Regarding the grave sin of abortion or euthanasia, when a person’s formal cooperation becomes manifest (understood, in the case of a Catholic politician, as his consistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion and euthanasia laws), his Pastor should meet with him, instructing him about the Church’s teaching, informing him that he is not to present himself for Holy Communion until he brings to an end the objective situation of sin, and warning him that he will otherwise be denied the Eucharist.

This denial, the Cardinal noted in the same instruction, “is not a sanction or a penalty. Nor is the minister of Holy of Communion passing judgment on the person’s subjective guilt, but rather is reacting to the person’s public unworthiness to receive Holy Communion due to an objective situation of sin.”[3]

Therefore, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Joseph F. Martino, Bishop of Scranton, reminds all ministers of Holy Communion, ordinary and extraordinary, that:

To administer the Sacred Body and Blood of the Lord is a serious duty which they have received from the Church, and no one having accepted this responsibility has the right to ignore the Church’s law in this regard;

Those whose unworthiness to receive Holy Communion is known publicly to the Church must be refused Holy Communion in order to prevent sacrilege and to prevent the Catholic in question from committing further grave sin through unworthy reception.

James B. Earley

Chancellor

Please see my post on the important need to pray for our bishops. Can you give them one hour per week - a holy hour, so that they may receive the graces they need? As interesting as it is to read about a bishop standing up to immorality, dissent and scandal, it is also a very heavy cross for them to carry. Help them to carry the cross through prayer, fasting, reparation, and adoration.

EDIT: Some have looked for an email address to send support to Bishop Martino. There is no email listed for the Diocese of Scranton. However, I suggest sending snail mail to the following address. Scranton Shepherd, Bishop Martino, calls for dissolution of Misericordia's "Diversity Institute"

Oh boy! The Times-Leader in Pennsylvania had to round up a bunch of students since they weren't consulted by Bishop Martino. Surprise! They disagree with him.

That Catholics would essentially thumb their noses at the local bishop when he clarifies Catholic teaching on faith and morals is manifest need for a more remedial kind of remedy. Perhaps Misericordia could make this the text for a required class for students and faculty, based on the same name. They might want to pay particular attention to Part 1, Chapter 1 (What it means to be Catholic) and chapter 2 (Who's who in the Catholic Church). The section on bishops and archbishops is on page 36.

    Original Post

File Photo from the Scranton Times-Tribune

Rock on God bless you, Bishop Martino!

One thing is for certain. His Excellency is persistant and is ensuring that scandal is not happening in his diocese without a clear understanding of the Church's position. Keep in mind, there is only so much a bishop can do with Catholic institutes of higher education when they stray.

I've been making posts weekly about the actions of Bishop Martino in Scranton, PA. This is the same bishop who stood up at the USCCB's November meeting and told his brother bishops that they would one day have to account for their "collective reticence to speak to Catholic politicians who are not just reluctant, but stridently anti-life." .

Bishop Martino takes the matter of scandal very seriously. There is nothing going on at Misericordia University that is not going on at countless other institutions which are proving to be Catholic in name only. Some bishops have chosen to try to change the situation at local colleges through discrete dialogue, I'm sure with the best of intentions. However, it is a very public thing when a Catholic institution invites speakers who will very likley promote things, in the name of diversity, that are in complete conflict with basic Catholic teaching.

Bishop Martino has spoken and acted with a candor, publicly, in ways that have had pro-lifers breathing a sigh of relief and dissident Catholics rolling their eyes (see some of my earlier posts at the bottom).

In the past week, His Excellency has been firing away at Misericordia University for bringing to the school to speak, author Keith Boykin, who is the former president of a same-sex marriage advocacy group. The schools "Diversity Institute" co-sponsored the visit. Boykin was also brought to the school before, as a visiting scholar, for a week.

Now, Bishop Martino is calling on the school to dissovle it's Diversity Institute. A February 24, 2009 press release states (emphases mine, comments bracketed in red):

Bishop Asks Misericordia To Specify How Sexuality Is Taught

In response to Misericordia University’s assertion that it “is committed deeply to its Catholic mission,” Bishop Joseph F. Martino observes that the institution should convey to its alumni, and in fact to all the faithful of the Diocese of Scranton, its efforts to teach Catholic morality regarding sexuality and homosexuality.

In doing this, the Bishop believes the school should speak precisely, naming courses, content and even catalog numbers. [Good, lest more ambiguous fluff be passed off as objective, Catholic content]

Bishop Martino’s position at this time follows his “absolute disapproval” of the university’s hosting of Keith Boykin, a proponent of morality that is disturbingly opposed to Catholic teaching.

Mr. Boykin made two presentations at the school on Feb. 17. In at least one of his talks, he discussed advocacy for issues such as same sex marriage, and he addressed the intersection of religion and sexuality. The Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality was not presented at the event. [If any teen, university student, faculty member, or other adult does not comprehend just how basic this is - as in 101, here is a remedy]

A statement from the Diocese issued the day before the talks noted that “Mr. Boykin has authored three books and all three have been nominated for a Lambda Literary award. Lambda is a legal advocacy effort for homosexual causes. Mr. Boykin is an avid supporter of same sex marriage and is an activist for positions disturbingly opposed to Catholic moral teaching.

“Bishop Martino wants Catholics of the Diocese of Scranton to know of his absolute disapproval of Misericordia University’s hosting Mr. Boykin. By honoring this speaker through allowing his positions, so antithetical to Catholic Church teaching, to be broadcast on its campus, the University has rejected all four essential characteristics of a Catholic institution of higher learning. These are: [1]its Christian inspiration, [2]its obligation to reflect on knowledge in light of the Catholic faith, [3]its fidelity to Catholic Church teaching and [4] its commitment to serve the people of God.

“The faithful of the Diocese of Scranton, the Bishop observed, should be in no doubt that Misericordia University in this instance is seriously failing in maintaining its Catholic identity.”

Misericordia responded with a statement saying it understood the Bishop’s criticism, but “Mr. Boykin’s appearance . . . is not meant to be a forum for advocacy on any singular issue.” The statement also said the University “welcomes legitimate scholarly discussion among its students, faculty, staff and guests from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.”

The statement also said that “Misericordia University is committed deeply to its Catholic mission.” [Do they understand the Catholic mission?!?!?]

Regarding the request for specific information from Misericordia, Bishop Martino said that students attending a Catholic institution should have a clear understanding that while all persons should be treated with dignity, homosexual activity is not condoned by the Church and should never be construed as acceptable behavior. [This is always a red-herring that Catholic dissidents try to paint this as discriminatory or uncharitable. They confuse the two issues. The Church does not hate people with SSA. She does not try to "enforce" laws made up out of thin air. Nor are these laws made up by the Pope in such a way as to change with wind direction. The Ten Commandments are clear about fornication and adultery. Christ came to fulfil the law, not abolish it so the Ten Commandments are not the 10 Suggestions. Whether one is of homosexual or heterosexual orientation, all who are not bound in sacramental marriage must observe chastity. Furthermore, Vatican II did not do away with the Old Testament, or the New Testament, or the council of Trent for that matter].

Bishop Martino is also asking Misericordia to seriously consider discontinuing its Diversity Institute, which co-sponsored Mr. Boykin’s appearance. He had previously served for a week as a visiting scholar with the Institute.

The Bishop’s rationale is that students should learn respect for all races and cultures, but that viewpoints that are in direct opposition to Catholic teaching should not be presented under the guise of “diversity.” [You gotta love this bishop]. Doing so within a formal structure sanctioned by the institution gives the impression that these viewpoints are acceptable, or that all morality is relative. [and, creates grave scandal among those so poorly catechized they don't even know what it all means].

Keep an eye on this press release page at the Diocese of Scranton.

Archbishop Chaput on American Catholics and Obama

There is excellent coverage at the Catholic News Agency of a talk just given in Canada by Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver. This is only one small excerpt:

The Denver prelate then provided his critique of President Obama.

"President Obama is a man of intelligence and some remarkable gifts. He has a great ability to inspire, as we saw from his very popular visit to Canada just this past week. But whatever his strengths, there’s no way to reinvent his record on abortion and related issues with rosy marketing about unity, hope and change. Of course, that can change. Some things really do change when a person reaches the White House. Power ennobles some men. It diminishes others. Bad policy ideas can be improved. Good policy ideas can find a way to flourish. But as Catholics, we at least need to be honest with ourselves and each other about the political facts we start with."

Yet this will be "very hard for Catholics in the United States," Chaput warned.

According to the archbishop, the political situation for Catholics is difficult to discern because a "spirit of adulation bordering on servility already exists among some of the same Democratic-friendly Catholic writers, scholars, editors and activists who once accused pro-lifers of being too cozy with Republicans. It turns out that Caesar is an equal opportunity employer."

Fr. Perrone's Sermon for Quinquagesima Sunday (EF) - a great lead-in to Lent

    Subject: Concupiscence

When have you last heard a priest talk like this? And, no - Vatican II did not eliminate words found in this sermon. This is the other half of the faith many have not been hearing.

Please feel free to add your thoughts in the combox. Comments are usually moderated in the evening when I am home.

    Sermon of Fr. Eduard Perrone,
Pastor, Assumption Grotto Parish in Detroit
    Quinquagesima Sunday 2009

Whenever I teach a course in the catechism, inevitably the word concupiscence crops up. It’s hard finding a synonym for this word in order to get across the idea that we poor fallen creatures come into this world with a debility that eggs us on to commit sin. I had often used the word ‘desire’ as a substitute for concupiscence, but realized how inadequate it is to express that fiercely driving impulse, that even maddening desire that fuels the lust, greed, anger, anxiety, and vanity behind so many of our usual sins. Then the right word hit me. Craving. There’s an internal disturbance in us that impels, moves, drives us: craving. Most unsettling! This is the pitiable condition of all fallen humanity. It’s the result of the friction created by ‘craving’ something when our mind tells us it must not be.

Humanity deserved to be punished with concupiscence because Adam first contradicted what God had told him. ‘You shall not eat of the forbidden fruit.’ Collectively, we ate that fruit and thus we got exactly what we had asked for: the biting, gnawing desire that goes contrary to what we know is right. So many of our spiritual battles then are centered upon having to control, binding up, and tame this beastly craving within. And so the struggle goes on in each man who must contend with concupiscence and find ways of curbing it. Its remedies as prescribed by the Church are obedience, discipline, good upbringing, the cultivation of the spiritual life of prayer, solitude, silence and the willing application of penances, bodily and spiritual. Of course, for some these things are not even considered: there’s little or no resistence given to these drives. Instead there’s the voluntary fueling of those tendencies and in that way people get themselves into some monumental difficulties in becoming slaves, addicts to sin. The modern remedy for these ills is to be drugged into tranquility with medicines, a solution that only masks the underlying human problem. Religion offers other remedies that go to the root of the problem and which, if applied diligently, begin to heal the soul, wounded by concupiscence.

Although I’ve spoken on this subject before in my sermons, I invoke it again for this Quinquagesima Sunday on account of the scriptures and the approaching season of Lent. There was a blind man, overlooked and silenced by the crowd. Did no one have a care about him? Here was the very symbol of fallen humanity, a man disabled by a native condition. Our Lord had compassion on him. When the man was met by Christ, he was asked ‘what do you wish that I should do for you?’ The man answered as we would have expected. He wanted to be cured, to be well. Because of his faith in Jesus as God, he was granted his wish and he was cured.

There are many things about faith that are wonderful. Religion puts us into contact with God and opens up effective commerce with Him. We can praise Him, love Him, adore Him and in return we receive countless benefits from Him. We can’t reduce all of religion to its pragmatic purposes in being cured of our weaknesses and forgiven of our sins, but we have to admit that this is a good part of it and a fundamental reason for being religious people. We need God to be in an upright condition.

The tongue-twister Quinquagesima indicates 50 days before Easter. The countdown began two Sundays ago and now we are headed for the opening of Lent this week. There is no more urgent business before us than self-reform–and Lent is its season. There are many things we might undertake to do for Lent: giving up this or that, or taking on some good spiritual practice. Whatever thing we do however should have as its aim to make us spiritually sound. To accomplish this we may need to adjust our schedules, to modify our habits. There should be a change in our daily routine, that is, every day during Lent. This should be reflected in what is being served on our tables. It should forbid us to go to entertainments. It should mean imposed times of silence. Does anyone do these things anymore?

It may be that our worries about our securities in these trying times is the needed thing to bring back an awareness of being accountable to God for ourselves, for our self-reform. If everything in life came to a halt and there was no longer anything else to occupy our time, would there be God and eternity staring us in the face, or merely emptiness? The vain pursuits that are fueled by concupiscence lead to despair. Without a conversion to God and a reform of life, we will be lost eternally.

Saint Paul estimated that nothing in life was of any value without charity. For this reason then, for the love of God, for the love of your own souls, for the love of the Church and for the conversion of the world, prepare yourselves for a spiritually beneficial Lent. Whatever it is you do, it should help bring about a restoration of your human condition to a state of spiritual health–with charity, with love, rather than craving being the prime mover in your life.

SSPX Bishop Williamson Leaves Argentina for London

I don't have much time at the moment, but you may recall that, about a week ago, the Argentinian government told SSPX Bishop Williamson that he must leave the country within 10 days.

Well, Bishop Williamson has left the building Argentina.

Please pray for this bishop. He really needs a dose of grace.

Australia: Former High Court judge appointed to Father Peter Kennedy case

Posted an hour ago at The Australian: Former High Court judge Ian Callinan appointed to Father Peter Kennedy case

Ian Callinan was nominated by Archbishop Bathersby to mediate between the Archdiocese and Fr. Peter Kennedy, the rogue Catholic priest who is refusing to leave St. Mary's after the chief shepherd of the diocese assigned a new administrator, Fr. Ken Howell. This came after months of trying to correct happenings at the South Brisbane parish that were far from Catholic.

Unfortunately, Fr. Peter Kennedy is refusing to enter mediation without the involvement of the parish community.

Can you imagine Jesus consulting the apostles about whether he should obey the will of the Father?

Pray for this priest and this community.

The Tablet first goes after Fr. Tim with a hack-job, then goes after him for copyright infringement

Good grief. There are some real bozos over there at The Tablet - a UK "catholic" weekly with a readership of about just over 23,000 (but as Fr. Z points out, he gets more than that in one day!)

Go read Fr. Tim Finigan's legally compliant response to The Tablet's goofy article.

I mean, this is just plain silly.

More on Archbishop Dolan tomorrow. I got home too late to do much more than this, which was too hard to pass up.

As secular things go....The New York Times introduces Archbishop Timothy Dolan to it's readers

"Big Tim" , with eyes widely opened, gazes in awe with a prize he has earned after calling St. John the Evangelist Cathedral home (see Milwaukee's cathedral before it was wreckovated by Abp Weakland - his predecessor, and after). His new home will be the ever-beautiful St. Patrick's in New York. PHOTO: AP/Seth Wenig

I'm home eating lunch and pounding away at the keyboard once again...

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee gets the New York City throne. The archbishop points out that unlike his appointment in Milwaukee, he was not asked if he would like it; he was told it was his. As an obedient son of the Church, he didn't second guess the Holy Father when word came through the Nuncio, Archbishop Pietro Sambi "some nine or ten days ago", that the Pope had appointed him as the next archbishop of New York City.

He will be installed on April 15th, the Wednesday following Easter.

From Hell's Bible, the New York Times article, Milwaukee Archbishop Chosen to Succeed Egan . (emphases in bold; comments mine bracketed in red)

Archbishop Dolan, who has a towering frame and a gregarious presence, is orthodox in his theology but more likely to use persuasion than punishment on Catholics who do not share his views [I agree that this is a trend in more recent appointments. The Holy Father wants to bring along as many people as possible out of their dissenting mode through reason rather than throwing them out. It requires more time and patience. Not to worry because God knows that many people have been misled, but now they have to be carefully led back. However, Dolan will do what he must if a situation warrants it. For that, read on....].

    [snip]

Archbishop Dolan, by contrast, has earned a reputation for being convivial with parishioners, accessible to the news media [this is needed because when a bishop or cardinal is not accessible, the media fills in the blank] and not above smoking cigars with his seminarians [I'm anti-smoking, but never against a bishop or priest having a periodic stogie with his brothers and with seminarians - I think this is a good thing]. Yet behind the scenes, he has quietly reeled in theologians and priests who question church doctrine [this goes to the dignity of the person and another reason why I think the Holy Father is appointing men with this quality. What parent would work to correct a child in a public way? However, I think there is a limit here and a time for public correction lest others catch the same illness]

    [snip]

“He’s the type of man that the pope is looking for as a bishop,” said the Rev. Thomas Reese, a Jesuit scholar and close observer of American bishops. “He’s intelligent, he’s scholarly, he is pastoral and people like him. [Of course the NY Times would consult Reese. I found this interesting given that it is coming from the dissenting wing of the Church (no use of left or right here would be appropriate you are either loyal or dissenting). Reese is the former editor of American Magazine (a dissenting Jesuit periodical) who was unceremoniously removed by the Holy See resigned and is now with the Woodstock Theological Center (oy vey!). What is interesting is that there is no apparent jab here, given Dolan's orthodoxy. Will they listen to him? Can he disarm them?]

Pope Benedict on the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter

Today, during the Angelus, the Holy Father delivered the following address on the Feast of the Cathedra (emphases mine in bold):

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – In the day in which the Church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter (22 February), Benedict XVI spoke to the pilgrims who had gathered in St Peter’s Square for the Angelus, asking them to “accompany me with your prayers so that I may faithfully accomplish the high task Divine Providence has placed upon me as Successor to the Apostle Peter.”

“The Chair of Peter,” the Pontiff explained, “symbolises the authority of the Bishop of Rome, [who is] called to fulfil a special service for the People of God as a whole. Right after the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul the Church of Rome was acknowledged a primatial role in the whole Catholic community, a role attested as early as the 2nd century by Saint Ignatius of Antioch (Ad. Rom, praef. Funk, I, 252) and Saint Irenaeus of Lyons (Against Heresies III, 3, 2-3).”

This unique and specific ministry of the Bishop of Rome was reiterated in the Second Vatican Council. “[W]ithin the Church,” says the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church, “particular Churches hold a rightful place; these Churches retain their own traditions, without in any way opposing the primacy of the Chair of Peter, which presides over the whole assembly of charity (cf S. Ignatius M., Ad Rom., Praef.: Ed. Funk, I, p. 252),) and protects legitimate differences, while at the same time assuring that such differences do not hinder unity but rather contribute toward it” (Lumen gentium, 13).

Guest Comment on the Legionaries of Christ

A friend, and Grotto-goer, who is currently out of state, emailed me the comment below for my blog, and has given me permission to use his name. He originally asked me to put it in the combox of this post on the Legion of Christ, but his format and links would have been lost, or I would have had to go through much time to re-link things there. Also, fewer hits find the post once a few days or a week has passed.

    Bill Myszkier writes:

Thanks for continuing to post on the situation regarding the Legionaries of Christ. Some of the best coverage I have seen is being done by American Papist. Also notable is the blog by Ed Peters which you have referenced in your coverage. I would invite you to link again to this blog (http://www.canonlaw.info/blog.html) particularly the posts he made on 2/13/09 and 2/8/08.

As Ed mentions, the current Director General of the Legion is “stonewalling” when he says that he knows nothing about Maciel’s behavior except that he fathered a daughter. There has been no attempt to be candid about the results of the Legion’s internal investigation of Maciel. The reasonable conclusion is that he or other Legionary authorities have been complicit in covering up Maciel’s behavior perhaps over many years. This is supported by the post made by Tom Peters in American Papist (http://www.americanpapist.com/blog.html) dated 2/13/09, 7:00am. Here he quotes a spokesman for the Legion in Mexico as saying:

    Javier Bravo, spokesman for the Legionaries in Mexico ... revealed that, even before the death of Marcial Maciel last January 2008, the Vatican already had in its possession an ample documentation about the amorous affairs of Maciel. [He also said that] the Vatican was planning on making this information public, and indicated this to Father Alvaro Corcuera, successor of Maciel at the head of the Legionaries. {note plural "amorous affairs", again.}

    Peters comments:

“This is simply stunning news if it is true. It contradicts what the Legion has been saying that they found out first and went to the Vatican. It also contradicts the claim that the Legion spontaneously brought this information to its rank-and-file members.

For if the Legion's hand was indeed "forced" by an understanding that the Vatican was going to make this known anyway, then the Legion was actually granted permission by the Vatican to spread the news in their own way first (and we are witnesses to how that has worked out).”

The Legion has consistently tried to obfuscate the truth. Up to 2006 they said that Maciel was a saintly man and that his malicious accusers were trying to discredit him to attack the Church. Then when the 2006 communique (of Benedict XVI remanding Maciel to a life of penance) came out they continued to protest Maciel’s innocence and said that he would suffer in imitation of Jesus Christ for the good of the Legion and the Church. They were so certain of his innocence that they tried to defend the reputation of the Founder by bringing a civil suit against ReGAIN (http://www.regainnetwork.org/) which had for years been trying to expose the corruption. Now they claim that even though they knew him to be innocent (at the same time that they were trying to destroy Maciel’s critics) they initiated an investigation of their saintly Founder. They discovered that he was living a “double life” and discovered he had an illegitimate daughter dating back to about 1987.

He may have misappropriated funds to support his second family but apparently there was no record of it for all that time. Neither apparently was anyone aware of these misdeeds. Now it also seems that at least some of the cases of pederasty involving seminarians might be true but nobody in the Legion knew anything about them until just recently (in spite of the fact that the victims were continuing to clamor for justice). How is it that Legionary superiors were unanimous in affirming his saintliness over a period of decades? Sanctity for a religious implies “vita communis” and rigorous observance of the Rule. How can one lead a double (triple, quadruple…) life and not have anyone know about it?

The Legion has not apologized or tried to help the victims nor have they acknowledged the legitimacy of the ReGAIN criticisms or reimbursed them for the legal expenses and the pain and suffering that their members have endured. Now it appears (from Tom Peter’s post) that the Vatican had to pressure the Legion against their will into “investigating” and taking action.

In short, is there anything in the history of the Legion to suggest that it desires reform or help from the Holy See? In fact, just the opposite. The Holy See had to intervene unilaterally after 2006 to abrogate key sections of the Legionary Constitutions central to its charism (the first secret vow that prohibited a Legionary from criticizing his superiors).

If the past is any indication the Legionaries of Christ will lie, obfucate, and obstruct to maintain their present position much as Legion resisted the exorcism Jesus performed in the region of the Gadarenes.

I would be grateful if you posted this as a comment below your most recent blog on the Legion.

Please participate: Weekly Holy Hour for US Catholic Bishops

I realize this post is long, but please bear with me as I ask you to consider making a holy hour each week for our US Catholic bishops.

A thought came to me today after morning Mass and I thought I would pass it along here. It is my hope that other bloggers will also promote this idea with a link to this post.

I am speaking here, as a secular Carmelite - one who believes that prayer is primary.

Bishop Robert Baker of Birmingham, Alabama, in an interview with Raymond Arroyo on World Over Live this past Friday, urged, if not pleaded, for people to pray for the conversion of elected officials. That is, for those especially caught up in the culture of death mindset. Bishop Baker has provided a prayer to people in his diocese and Raymond has a copy of that prayer in this blogpost at the bottom.

    Softening the Target

In battle, ground troops are rarely sent in to an area before the target is "softened". This usually means that heavy bombing from air, land, and sea takes place to take out supplies, infrastructure, and more. Fewer ground troops fall because they are less vulnerable as the enemy is weakened.

When we want people to change for the better spiritually, it is wise to pray for them first and foremost. This kind of prayer is a form of "softening of the target". Without it, we will make little headway. Included here are sacrifices made for such people and offered humbly to God, from an illness suffered, to putting up with others, and even giving up a favorite desert or a much loved television show in favor of spiritual reading.

    Spiritual Warfare

For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. (Ephesians 6:12)
We are not simply fighting human reasoning (or lack there of), when it comes to those who support and advance the culture of death. As Catholics we not only believe that there is a heaven and a hell, but good angels, and bad. The latter are having a field day as our Catholic faith is perverted beyond belief in very public ways, causing many people to be led into scandal.

We cannot fight Satan with reason. Rather, he and his legion must be fought with faith, prayer, fasting, and other forms of sacrifice.

Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering, rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it, "Mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!" Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out. He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, "He is dead!" But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up. When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private, "Why could we not drive it out?" He said to them, "This kind can only come out through prayer." (Mark 9:25-29)

Prayer for people who are in positions of power, especially politicians, is good, as Bishop Baker and others are suggesting. What is even better is if we pray for our bishops as well, that God grace them with a level of holy boldness similar to that exhibited by bishops in the early Church.

The Angel of Darkness and the Mark of the Priesthood

Bishops are human and sinful creatures like the rest of us. They too suffer from the effects of Original Sin. While they are given graces by virtue of their office to assist them, they also have a target on their backs like all priests, but even bigger. The Angel of Darkness has the mark of the priesthood in his cross hairs. If he can get one pastor to dissent, he gets a number of people in the parish to dissent. If he gets a bishop to fall into lukewarmness, then a significant segment of his diocese will suffer likewise.

False charity has also been a problem. It has permeated not only our families and culture, but has affected many priests and bishops. False charity paralyzes a shepherd from acting because he is afraid that by doing so will cause a stir, and that this is somehow uncharitable. In reality, the opposite is true. By not confronting the matter, the opportunity to exercise great charity is lost and others are scandalized by what they witness. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke received back into the Church several members of a troubled parish whom he had earlier excommunicated. He did not excommunicate them out of anger or for punishment. Rather, it was a last ditch effort to get them to understand the seriousness of their actions.

A lamb who is caught in thickets sometimes needs to have the thickets pruned from around him. Doing so may inflict a little pain as the thorns shift during pruning, but the good shepherd knows that the lamb will die if he does not trim away the bush in an effort to release him.

We have to pray that our clergy will be more concerned with our salvation than our feelings. This doesn't mean they ought to check charity at the door. Rather, error needs to be dealt with in ways that are not condescending. Despite the best attempts to correct things pastorally and charitably, some will walk away sad or angry. They did when before Our Lord Himself, and he did not go chasing after them to force the issue. Some have illness that runs so deep they are a danger to everyone with whom they come into contact. These must be isolated unless they show signs of returning to good health, where they will strengthen the Mystical Body, rather than weaken it.

Pre-election Display of Solidarity Among US Bishops

Catholics around the world witnessed an almost shocking display of solidarity amongst many US bishops when they reacted to Nancy Pelosi's distorted misrepresentation of the faith on national television just before the presidential election. Their messages were clear and firm. It was also unifying among those who are loyal to the Church, causing eyebrows to raise, as well as hope. It lifted people who have been on the front lines of the pro-life movement and energized Catholics in the Walk for Life, even after presidential defeat. Many more bishops who did not write personal statements made the USCCB statement, penned by Cardinal Rigali and Bishop Lori, readily visible on their diocesan sites also as a show of solidarity. It all started with one or two bishops, then it just took on a life of it's own.

Years ago it was not uncommon to regularly see two names standing out in such ways: Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz and Bishop Raymond L. Burke. Unfortunately, in Catholic circles, these two bishops were seen as some kind of rebels. Should it be of any surprise that a bishop who acts like a bishop will be persecuted, even from within? Today, Archbishop Burke heads the Apostolic Signatura - the highest court in the Holy See.

The US Bishops are Emboldening One Another

Each bishop is graced with certain talents. Some are very good in explaining the faith to the media, such as Archbishop Charles Chaput. Others, like Bishop Robert J. Hermann keep the faithful focused on Christ in their pro-life work.

Each bishop is gifted in some way that not only serves his immediate diocese, but the larger Church. For some, it is in administrative or legal areas, in others more pastoral. We must pray that they use their talents to the fullest extent possible for the good of Holy Mother Church.

I believe we are in the midst of witnessing a great renewal in the Church. Our bishops are learning by the actions of the Holy Spirit, from each other, and it is generating the kind of holy boldness called for by Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, Oregon.

They will need this holy boldness because I believe we are headed into an era of persecution the likes of which we in this country have not experienced. It may come to pass that our priests and bishops will be jailed for preaching the fullness of the faith, as is being advanced in other countries.

    Pray for Our Bishops

Not all bishops are blessed with the same level of strength to deal with disciplinary issues. While the bulk of problems we face today may very well be the result of reticence on the part of bishops who didn't address them, I believe a piece of it comes back to all of us. As a whole, we as Catholics have lost the art of prayer and sacrifice. Since we are fighting forces unseen, at many levels, we have to recover those arts. Lent is a good time to start. If you truly love the Church, you will give serious time to praying for the successors to the apostles.

Behind the scenes there is likely a flurry of communication going on between bishops, and between the Holy See and our bishops, over dissenting Catholic politicians who continue to scandalize others by their words and actions. The Holy Father will not step in and take action where protocol dictates that the bishop must handle the matter. Join him in his prayers for bishops to do what they must to correct the problem and mitigate the damage.

We must pray more fervently than we have before for our bishops. Make one Holy Hour per week for them, and include prayers for the conversion of politicians at the same time.

If you don't have access to an adoration chapel, then see if you can get to Church an hour earlier to sit in quiet meditation. If it is too noisy, then have a Holy Hour in your home, turning your heart to the Tabernacle closest to you. At the same time, entrust the bishops to Our Lady. She can influence them in ways all the blogposts in the world cannot, if we have faith in her.

    A final note

One of my prayers is that more bishops will look at a fine pastoral letter by Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, Oregon. It is unambiguous and not condescending. We could use something similar in every diocese of the world.

And now, an example of the ultimate in holy boldness....

Holy Boldness: Blessed Noel Pinot going to his death fully vested in 1794 after refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the "Civil Constitution of the Clergy". Fr. Tim Finigan explains that it was a law passed by the Constituent Assembly of the Revolution which subjected the Church to the civil government.

The obedient are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world!

Pelosi, in her own words, reveals ignorance about Eucharist

I'm getting to this article a few days late, but better late than never.

Pelosi is quoted in a book written by Kerry Kennedy called, Being Catholic Now. Remember Hebrews 13:8-9a:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching.

On February 13, 2009, Kathryn Jean Lopez shared a portion of it in the National Catholic Register (emphases mine in bold; comments bracketed in red]:

Pelosi has preached her own unique gospel of death in the past on the Sabbath Day morning political shows [excellent wording]. As the Democratic Convention was set to begin in Denver this summer, Pelosi announced that the Church really had no idea when life began, citing Augustine and Aquinas as backup. She had absolutely no qualms with her party’s continued legal-abortion activism and their nominee’s radical position on even infanticide.

But none of this comes as a surprise to me. Consider what she wrote in a book called Being Catholic Now [by Kerry Kennedy] earlier this year. In it she [Pelosi]explained, “I’ve always been pro-choice. To me, it’s like saying, ‘Should we surrender our brains?’ I feel very comfortable with it." [No, you don't surrender your brains, you use them to truly study what the Church teaches, with humility and openness. You then use your brains to consider God may not be granting you the understanding now, but may, in time, if you humbly obey even when you don't understand after careful study. It takes no faith to obey that which we understand, but a great deal of faith to obey that which we do not understand when Holy Mother Church, with her 2000 years of wisdom and grace, feeds it to us. Put another way, those obedient to Church teaching are not held captive by Holy Mother Church; it is the disobedient who are held captive by the world! Obedience is not imposed by the Church, but freely chosen by the humble through the use of their brains] But then, we really got to the core of the problem.

In the book, she recalls that around the time of her swearing in as the first woman speaker of the House, her granddaughter was preparing to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time (my words, not hers).

Relaying an exchange with the girl, her mother and Grandma Nancy, the congresswoman writes that the girl announced that she wanted to explain that “‘it is the BODY and BLOOD of Christ. When we go to church, IT IS THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST.’”

Her mother corrected the girl: “‘Yes, the host and the wine REPRESENT the body and blood of Christ.’”

But Nancy’s granddaughter protested, God bless her: “‘NOT represent. IS, it IS the body and blood of Christ.’” [Indeed, God bless her....and the priests, religious, and lay people who were involved in the young girl's formation. Pray for this child, that she remain faithful in the face of such confusion in the adults around her]

Pelosi writes, “My granddaughter was buying into it.”

Pelosi goes on to explain: “Okay. But it is hard. Every Sunday for me it’s hard. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Now think of it; we say that every week. Do I really believe he’s coming again? Yes, I believe he’s coming again. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. This is my body; this is my blood. They’re asking a lot. In my era, we didn’t question any of it.” [This is just confusing. She needs to un-busy herself and sit down with the Catechism of the Catholic Church]

Of course, it’s not “they” who are asking anything. It’s Him.

Meanwhile, it’s no wonder Nancy Pelosi is freelance gospel-writing in the public square; due to bad formation or whatever the cause [a charitable assumption we should make with all dissidents], she hasn’t embraced the core of the faith [exactly!]. How could she ever be a truth-telling public Catholic witness, how could she ever let the faith lead her in the public square, if she doesn’t even buy into the source and summit of it all?

One could get discouraged when waking up to such confused “Catholics” on Sunday morning TV. Don’t be. [Amen!] Go to Mass on Sunday; don’t stress about the Catholics misspeaking on “This Week” or “Meet the Press” or wherever it may be next Sunday. Do as the March for Lifers did this year: Pray without ceasing. [Excellent advice]

Ms. Lopez did a great job on this article. Do click the title link above the excerpt I provided and read the whole thing in it's entirety.

Bomb threat made against Archbishop Bathersby

The situation in South Brisbane, Australia, is about to reach a climax as the new administrator, Fr. Ken Howell, the new administrator has been planning to celebrate a Mass at 7:00am local time (about 6:00pm tonight here in Detroit), but he's being warned now to enter the parish by police.

In the meanwhile, a bomb threat has been sent by mail to Archbishop Bathersby. The target is the Bishop's residence, and there is a message linking it most likely to the St. Mary's situation.

World Over Live on EWTN - Excellent Interview with Bishop Baker of Birmingham, Alabama

If you did not watch World Over Live with Raymond Arroyo on EWTN this evening, catch it at 1:00am Saturday or 4:00pm Sunday. If you are outside of the US or don't have cable, you can watch it live on the internet provided you have something better than dialup. Here is a timezone map (the times listed are for GMT -5).

Raymond spent most of the show discussing Catholic politicians and Holy Communion using the example of Nancy Pelosi. He interviewed Bishop Robert Baker of Birmingham, Alabama and they discussed the Pope's publicized statement following their meeting.

Bishop Baker pleaded for prayers more than anything, especially during Lent. He also asked for people to fast and do acts of mortification. This, he said was primary.

As far as what the bishops are doing, I think he did a good job of explaining things. Let's just say that he is in Archbishop Burke's camp. At the same time, you can't expect Bishop Baker, or any bishop for that matter, to comment specifically one what some other bishop should do. You have to listen carefully about his policy and how he deals with Catholic politicians coming to town.

Watch this show and if you can't watch it, record it.

Here is the prayer that Bishop Baker is asking people to pray in his diocese:

Here is Bishop Baker's prayer for public officials. And God knows they could use prayers...

A Pro-Life Prayer for Our President and Public Officials

Lord God, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life, move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President, to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all those entrusted to their care. Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn, whose lives are threatened with extermination by an indifferent society. Guide all public officials by your wisdom and grace to cease supporting any law that fails to protect the fundamental good that is human life itself, which is a gift from God and parents. You are the Protector and Defender of the lives of the innocent unborn. Change the hearts of those who compromise the call to protect and defend life. Bring our nation to the values that have made us a great nation, a society that upholds the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Mary, the Mother of the living, help us to bear witness to the Gospel of Life with our lives and our laws, through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Imprimatur: January 22, 2009 + Most Reverend Robert J. Baker Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama

Pray for priest assigned to St. Mary's in Brisbane

Can there be a tougher assignment than this one at the moment? Pray for this priest. Pray for the conversion of Fr. Peter Kennedy, and pray for the people of St. Mary's who have been allowed to wander for so many years, that they find their way home. There is a very good chance this parish will break away in schism. We should be praying that it doesn't happen. It didn't get this way overnight and won't transform itself overnight either.

From the Catholic Leader in Australia:

Incoming administrator Fr Ken Howell has raised the hope that the community will move forward “vibrant and united” after recent events.

Fr Howell, who is also St Stephen’s Cathedral dean, is celebrating Masses for the first time in his new role at St Mary’s today.

Archbishop John Bathersby in a letter on February 6 informed then St Mary’s administrator Fr Peter Kennedy that he was cancelling his appointment, unless he “were to resign beforehand”.

Fr Kennedy and the St Mary’s community had failed to agree to directives from the archbishop for Fr Kennedy to cease practices at St Mary’s “that separated it from communion with the Roman Catholic Church”.

Archbishop Bathersby is standing by his decision.

In a statement this week, he said the transfer and appointment of parish priests and administrators was a normal part of the functioning of any archdiocese.

“My February 6 letter to Fr Kennedy requested that he either resign as administrator of St Mary’s or have that appointment terminated,” Archbishop Bathersby said.

“Fr Peter Kennedy will remain a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Brisbane after the termination of his appointment to St Mary’s.”
Fr Howell welcomed comments by Fr Kennedy in a Brisbane newspaper that, although he would continue to attend Mass in the parish, Fr Howell was “welcome” to lead the Mass.

“I look forward to visiting the parish during the week, so that there can be a smooth transition,” Fr Howell said in a statement on Monday.

“This is to ensure the celebration of Mass at St Mary’s this weekend and the continuation of important parish activities such as its outreach to people at a social or economic disadvantage in our community.”

Fr Howell also referred to Fr Kennedy’s collapse hours after his final Mass last Sunday afternoon. He was taken to hospital and released after observation.

“I was alarmed as a brother priest to hear that Fr Kennedy was taken ill last night, and hope he is on the road to recovery,” Fr Howell said.

A spokesperson for St Mary’s said it was understood that Fr Kennedy’s collapse was “basically due to the stress of the current situation”.

She said Fr Kennedy had taken a couple of days off duty but was “recovering well”.

Canonist speaks out on Pewsitter Online Petition aimed at getting Bishops attention

Fresh in from Canonist Ed Peters....

[updated at 5:22am, Feb 20th - scroll down]

Pewsitter.com has published an on-line petition by which Catholics may call upon bishops to withhold holy Communion from Catholic political figures who gravely disregard Church teaching on certain fundamental life issues. The petition invokes canon law in support of some of its propositions. I know nothing about the organization behind the petition, but I feel confident in commenting on its canonical aspects.

The petition seems to me to qualify under 1983 CIC 212.3 as one way of helping the faithful to express "to sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful." I do not think the petition pretends to an expertise it cannot claim, nor does it seem to be violative of basic norms on faith, morals, and reverence toward pastors, etc. It does not impugn the fidelity of those who choose not to sign.

The petition calls for withholding of holy Communion under Canon 915 and in this regard it avoids the highly contentious, and I think erroneous, claim that certain politicians should be subject to excommunication for their actions. Moreover, the petition avoids identifying specific politicians for action under Canon 915, even though a strong case can be made for such action in the case of, say, Nancy Pelosi. Each politician's situation, as I have said, needs to be examined individually by competent experts; this is by no means an impossible task, but it is not one best conducted in the blogosphere.

continue reading at, In Light of the Law...

It's ok to sign the petition, but don't forget to put some serious time into praying for our bishops. That prayer can move them, along with the knowledge that ordinary Catholics are tired of being scandalized, and seeing their loved ones and friends scandalized.

EDIT: Ed Peters has updated the post...

I just came across Michael Sean Winters' post on Canon 915 over at the America magazine group blog. Winter's qualifications to opine on matters canonical were not immediately evident to me, but he assures readers that applying Canon 915 in the response to the scandal of pro-abortion Catholic politicians would be "a radical innovation that should be resisted", that it "requires applying the canons in ways that are novel and dubious" and that canon law "should be applied with gentleness not vengeance" (you know, as if everyone agrees on what those terms actually mean in the concrete order), and so on.

Winters bravely confronts the evil unnamed blogger who, in a series of obvious misstatements, paints a picture of Canon 915 run amok. This device allows Winters to assume the mantle of moderation and warn us against those dangerous "cranks" who would substitute a blogger's opinion for that of pastor. Nice way to dispatch opposing views, that, present an obvious caricature, then tsk-tsk it away.

Ironically, it does not seem to occur to Winters that he quite willing to substitute his opinion on how canon 915 should be applied for that of actual pastors like Abp. Raymond Burke (a prelate whose credentials in canon law dwarf mine and, I'm guessing, Winters'). Burke offers a powerful, and I suggest compelling, case for the application of Canon 915 in the face of the metastasizing scandal of the prominent pro-abortion Catholic politician. Has Winters has read it?

In any case, I echo Winters' concern about "judgmentalism" being "profoundly uncharitable". But such concern should, I think, forbid labeling those who call for the correct application of Canon 915 as "cranks". Or is "judgmentalism" a temptation to only one side of this debate?

An Update on Pelosi Meeting with the Pope

There are a couple of quick notes I want to pass along.

First, go to Fox News for an interview bewteen Neil Cavuto and Archbishop Chaput on the meeting bewteen Nancy Pelosi and the Pope. (H/T - Tom Peters, AmP)

Secondly, go listen to the interview that Teresa Tomeo did with Fr. Frank Pavone yesterday. You can listen to the whole hour which starts with the news, then goes into an interview with Phil Lawler of Catholic World Report, and in the last 20-30 minutes (move the slider bar after clicking the link), will be an interview with Fr. Frank Pavone.

He gives a very solid reading of this interview. Two points I'm going to pull out:

    1) The Holy Father won't likely excommunicate someone like Nancy Pelosi because once he does, every bishop, everywhere would have to follow suit .... right now. It is preferrable by the Vatican that action come from individual bishops (if you disagree, that's fine, but hear Father out in the interview. He is, afterall, on the front lines and has a clear understanding of how things should work, especially having worked in the Vatican)

    2) Fr. Pavone points out that by making what he did public, Pope Benedict not only sent a message to Ms. Pelosi, but sent a message to her bishop, and in reality, all bishops of the world.

Bishop Martino threatens to close Scranton's Cathedral on St. Patrick's Day...

Bishop Martino has been acting decisively like a bishop who understands he is accountable for scandal created in his diocese and he is not going to sit back quietly.

    From the Scranton Times-Tribune

In a letter to the heads of three local Irish-American organizations, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Scranton has threatened to close St. Peter’s Cathedral during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations if the groups feature elected officials who support abortion rights at their annual events.

In a letter to the heads of three local Irish-American organizations, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Scranton has threatened to close St. Peter’s Cathedral during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations if the groups feature elected officials who support abortion rights at their annual events.

The letter, which was signed by Auxiliary Bishop John M. Dougherty, reports that Bishop Joseph F. Martino is “determined to prevent scandal,” which would be caused if the organizations “in any way” should “honor pro-abortion officials” by giving them parade or dais positions or opportunities to speak and “the Catholic Church is seen to be involved in this honoring.”

In direct terms, the letter reiterates the bishop’s publicly stated position that elected officials who vote to support abortion rights will be denied Holy Communion if they attempt to receive the sacrament in the diocese, including at St. Patrick’s Day Masses. The closing of St. Peter’s Cathedral is offered as an additional measure to prevent the honoring of such officials.

Auxiliary Bishop Dougherty wrote that the bishop hopes the groups’ “judicious choices” about which elected officials to honor will make any actions by the bishop unnecessary, but that the letter was sent “to avoid any surprise should (Bishop Martino) be required to take action in this most serious matter.”

The morning Mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral has been a traditional element of the parade day celebration for decades. An additional Mass on the feast day also is offered at the cathedral and is particularly important for the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, one of the groups the auxiliary bishop addressed.

Leaders of that group, as well as the other two Irish-American groups, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Association of Lackawanna County and the Society of Irish Women, reacted to the letter with surprise, disappointment and some confusion.

Evie Rafalko McNulty, a founder of the Society of Irish Women, explained that her group is not even Catholic.

“We’re not a Christian organization. We’re not ‘saint’ anything. We’re just a group of Irish women,” she said. Her group pays $500 to help defray the cost of the Mass given at St. Peter’s Cathedral on parade day, because it was asked to help contribute.

“If he doesn’t have the Mass, then we save $500,” she said.

John Keeler, president of the Friendly Sons, said the members of his group, a 103-year-old Irish Catholic organization, were chagrined by the letter but believe they already are in compliance with it.

“The suggestion that we would at any time do anything to create a scandal to the Catholic church is somewhat disappointing, considering that most, if not all, of our members are daily communicants in the Catholic faith who live their faith and support their church to the fullest extent possible,” he said.

In particular, the group’s disappointment stems from the section of the letter that says the bishop may close the cathedral, he said, because “many of our Irish ancestors played a major role in the physical construction of churches, including the cathedral.”

Mr. Keeler, who is also a past president of the parade association, said the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick are always “very much aware” of Catholic positions on political issues, like abortion, when they choose a speaker and do not plan to feature anyone this year who would be contrary to the bishop’s position. The group’s principal speaker this year will be Mark Durkan, the leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party in Northern Ireland.

The Society of Irish Women has not yet confirmed a speaker for its annual dinner, but Mrs. McNulty said the group has not invited anyone who has a legislative voting record on any abortion issue.

Mike Harrity, the president of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Association, did not return calls for comment.

The annual St. Patrick’s Parade through downtown Scranton is one of the largest in the country, and the dinners hosted by the Friendly Sons and the Society of Irish Women often have featured prominent national and international figures. Last year, President Barack Obama, then a senator, spoke at the Irish Women’s dinner; Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern spoke at the Friendly Sons’ dinner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, then a senator, marched in the parade.

Although bishops of the diocese have historically attended the Friendly Sons’ dinner, Bishop Martino has never participated.

    Bishop’s long fight

    ■ April 11, 2004: Bishop Martino says in an interview that he would “very, very seriously consider” denying Holy Communion to politicians who have supported abortion rights.

    ■ Sept. 29: The Catholic Light prints a statement by Bishop Martino: “A Catholic would be unworthy to receive Holy Communion if he or she were deliberately to vote for a candidate precisely because of that candidate’s permissive stand on abortion.”

    ■ Sept. 15, 2005: The bishop issues a pastoral letter: “I will not tolerate any politician who claims to be a faithful Catholic who is not genuinely pro-life.”

    ■ Sept. 30, 2008: Bishop Martino issues a pastoral letter to be in read at Masses telling Catholic voters that no other voting issue but euthanasia and embryonic stem-cell research are as morally grave as abortion.

    ■ Oct. 19: Bishop Martino arrives unannounced at a voters’ forum in a Honesdale church and chastises the group for discussing excerpts from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ position on voting issues. The document defines abortion and euthanasia, as well as racism, torture and genocide, as among the most important issues.

Big Apple still waits....is delay related to Pelosi's visit with the Pope?

It may be empty in this photo, but the Cathedra at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC is not vacant. Cardinal Egan is still keeping it warm for.....Archbishop Dolan???

Still nothing on the February 19th Bollettino, as of 6:38am for the US on the New York City Archbishop appointment. It is largely believed that Archbishop Dolan is "vacationing" in the Big Apple. [Post Edit: I'm not sure where I read that the archbishop was vacationing in New York, but I am unable to find the source and want to strike that statement....sorry for any confusion. I still think tomorrow is the day, but I may have to eat crow as my guess is as good as anyones]

Perhaps I'm giving the Vatican too much credit, but here goes a thought...

    [begin speculation]

I am going to maintain the theory that the Holy See is deliberately delaying the appointment in order to let the news about Pelosi's meeting with the Pope circulate well, and not get diffused with another big news item.

It's amazing what the Holy See can do when everyone is on the same page.

If any of this is true, Friday is a far better day than today would have been because it would have diffused yesterday's big news as it hits the print editions today (say that really fast 3x). However, it is noteworthy that the Vatican has been making announcements of appointments on Saturdays, as well. I still think tomorrow is the day.

Things are boiling over in South Brisbane...

We continue to watch events unfold in South Brisbane at St. Mary's parish where a rogue priest has been doing just about everything one can to get yanked by his Bishop. There are misleading reports out there claiming Fr. Peter Kennedy is being defrocked and I've not seen anything from the diocese to indicate such a thing. People are just trying to come up with good headlines.

Every day brings something new out of this corner of Australia and this morning was no different.

In this first article you can see that this priest could write a handbook on how to get replaced at a parish, and even excommunicated. Other headlines show the chaos, as well. Unfortunately, this has probably gone on for so long that it has embedded itself to the point that you have to wonder if the parish can be retained by the archdiocese, or if it will break off in schism.

NY Times: After Schooling by Pope, Pelosi Still Favors Abortion

    (Source: Pier Paolo Cito/Associated Press)

It looks like the Pope blew his stack. His zuccheto actually flew off during the windy general audience, prior to the meeting with Nancy Pelosi. It was a sign of things to come. But, the Fisherman remained calm in spite of the "many winds of doctrine" puffing about.

From the New York Times: Visiting Pope, Pelosi Hears a Call to Protect Life

She said she had praised “the church’s leadership in fighting poverty, hunger, and global warming, as well as the Holy Father’s dedication to religious freedom and his upcoming trip and message to Israel.” Ms. Pelosi’s statement did not mention the pope’s comments on abortion.

Her office noted that she has previously said she wants to reduce abortions but that she remains in favor of abortion rights.

Ok - so she didn't say it herself. "Her office" noted it for her.

It's only a matter of time before she notes it personally and publicly.

Followup on Meeting Between Abp Niederauer and Nancy Pelosi

Earlier today, I shared with you news that Michael Voris of Real Catholic TV had confirmed with both the Archdiocese of San Francisco and Nancy Pelosi's spokesman, that she had met with Archbishop Niederauer on Sunday, February 8th quietly in a third-party home.

One has to wonder, why make it so.....clandestine?

    I have my own theory:

    [begin speculation]

Nancy Pelosi looks for access to general audience on an upcoming visit (for a good photo-op) and is told she cannot meet with the Pope until she meets with her bishop, as she promised in August.

Pelosi meets Abp Niederauer at a third-party residence, privately, as reported on February 8th, without the knowledge of Niederauer's spokesman (he can't lie about that which he has no knowledge). While Pelosi wants it private, so does Niederauer because the Pope very much wants an opportunity to visit with her. Hence, the public is not to be denied knowledge of this meeting indefinitely, but only until the meeting with the Pope has taken place.

Vatican delays announcement of Archbishop Dolan to the Big Apple's throne because it wants to be absolutely certain that news of the Pope Benedict -Nancy Pelosi meeting is thoroughly circulated (look for that announcement Thursday morning or Friday - the latter of which would be better as it will not take attention off printed headlines of the meeting in the AM).

    [end speculation]

Pelosi gets the desired meeting with the Holy Father, not just a general audience, but a private meeting. There's only one problem.....the press and the photographers are locked out and only her, her husband and entourage are allowed in the private meeting. It lasts 15 mintes and promptly afterwards, probably unbeknownst to the Speaker given her own spin, the Vatican makes it clear she went through the "Pope Benedict XVI school of living Catholic in the public square".

Some noted on Feb 13th that no date had been set for a meeting with the Archbishop. Yet, this conflicted with reports that a meeting took place on Feb 8th. The conflict was noted on Catholic and political blogs, well. However, if the spokesman was unaware that a meeting had taken place already, then it could be that no one lied. Rather, they were uninformed.

    WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

Going down the same path, as did Michael Voris in his video commentary, Fr. Z states (note he is saying "if" the meeting took place).

If the Archbishop and the Speaker did in fact have a meeting, and if after this meeting and then the meeting with the Holy Father she does not change her position and actions concerning these life issues, I cannot see any way around the necessity for bishops, according to c. 915, to deny Speaker Pelosi reception of Holy Communion.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Abp Niederauer comes back from retreat. Will he offer a public response now that the meeting is over with Pope Benedict XVI? Perhaps nothing will happen until there is another public manifestation of her obstinant refusal to live Catholic. For Pelosi, that ought not take long given her track record. If Abp Niederauer goes to Canon 915 there ought not be any doubt in anyone's mind: Ms. Pelosi has been duly educated by the Pope himself. I'll be watching the Archdiocese of San Francisco website for any statement out of Abp Niederauer.

Followup on the Pope and Pelosi - put your boots on!

So, Nancy Pelosi got her meeting with the Holy Father, but any thoughts she had for a great photo-op to be exploited went bust. No photographers or reporters were permitted in the room.

John Allen, who writes for the National Catholic Reporter, had a pretty good piece up today. Granted, I consider NCR a dissident rag, for lack of a better expression (look - it's a real hangout for hippy-era ideals of Catholicism). But he brought up some good points, like this one:

Pope Benedict XVI’s much-awaited encounter this morning with U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, perhaps the most prominent pro-choice Catholic in America, amounted to a classic Vatican “both/and” exercise, striving to balance the demands of external diplomacy and internal church discipline.

By meeting Pelosi, Benedict signaled that he wants lines of communication to remain open with the new American leadership, even if the Vatican has deep differences with its policies on the “life issues.”
Without communication remaining open, you can't have dialogue. Without dialogue a wall goes up and the pro-life cause suffers. It's a cross that has to be beared - to continue talking with promoters of the culture of death.

Now, in a rare move, the Vatican updated it's Bolletino (and VIS) later in the morning (US time) with the press release on Pelosi's visit. John Allen notes:
While the Vatican typically puts out brief declarations after the pope meets with a head of state, encounters with lower-level officials are generally considered private. Doing so in this case thus suggests that the pope wanted to make a point.

WERE PELOSI AND THE POPE AT THE SAME MEETING?

We see what the Vatican website says about the 15 minute meeting. It's clear. It was instructive on life issues. No other mention was made, smartly, by the Vatican about anything else discussed. That is because if the Holy See had mentioned anything else, it would have taken away from the greater message, which was:

"His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development."

Pelosi had a different account of the meeting:

"It is with great joy that my husband, Paul, and I met with his Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI today," she said. "In our conversation, I had the opportunity to praise the Church's leadership in fighting poverty, hunger, and global warming, as well as the Holy Father's dedication to religious freedom and his upcoming trip and message to Israel."
If it gets any deeper, I'm going to need boots!

Perhaps she was unaware that the global Vatican website had published a statement promptly after the meeting.

Lifesite News had this to say:

Vatican insiders stressed to LifeSiteNews.com that such releases are always phrased in diplomatic language and thus the correction of the Speaker who describes herself as a "faithful Catholic," despite her abortion advocacy, should be taken as a firm rebuke.

The Lifesite piece also mentions John Allen's reporting:

The release from the Vatican, however, made no mention of the comments that Pelosi stressed in her release.

Pelosi's positive spin on the meeting is not being swallowed even by left-leaning Papal watchers. Vatican correspondent John Allen, who writes for the National Catholic Reporter, noted that "routine Vatican declarations after diplomatic meetings also generally sum up the range of issues discussed rather than concentrating on a particular point. In that sense, the statement can only be read as a rejection of Pelosi's statements last summer, and, in general, of her argument that it's acceptable for Catholics in public life to take a pro-choice position."

Allen also noted that "by issuing an unusual public statement after the session with Pelosi -- which insisted that all Catholics, including legislators, are obliged to work for the defense of human life from conception to natural death -- the pope also made clear there will no let-up in the pressure on pro-choice Catholic politicians to change their ways."
This was a checkmate on the pro-choice speaker. She tried to corner the king and got knocked off the board. Just to show you what I mean, look at the headlines in the secular press. If Pelosi thought her little spin would work in the headlines it didn't. The Vatican played it smart.

I'll try to do another followup on this tomorrow.

Leah, I'm glad that you take pride in your Catholic university. Let's look closer at some things...

What exactly did Bishop Martino say about Misericordia? Here is what he said:

“The faithful of the Diocese of Scranton, the Bishop observed, should be in no doubt that Misericordia University in this instance is seriously failing in maintaining its Catholic identity.”

Why is it seriously failing in "this instance" in it's Catholic identity?

Because it has invited a speaker who is a proponent of gay "marriage". By virtue of having a speaker at a Catholic institution who promotes something that counters Church teaching can lead others into scandal.

What is scandal? Let's look at the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor's tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

2285 Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."85 Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep's clothing.

2286 Scandal can be provoked by laws or institutions, by fashion or opinion

Now, here is something to consider with regards to scandal. If a bishop is aware of the potential for the faithful to be scandalized into thinking that, by virtue of the fact that this man is speaking on a Catholic campus, on gay marriage, and the bishop says nothing, does he not participate in that scandal through omission?

Similarly, is not reasonable to assume that if Mr. Boykin is advancing gay marriage on a regular basis off campus, that he might promote it at Misericordia? I think it is a very reasonable assumption on the part of Bishop Martino.

    Leah continues...

I wonder how many people who are commenting on this speech, actually attended it, to see for themselves what the Bishop so disapproved of. I believe when Misericordia said in their statement, "Mr. Boykin’s speech is not meant to be a forum for advocacy on any single issue," was that despite him being a homosexual, his speech was not focused on his homosexuality, or in fact, any homosexuality at all.

The 8 o'clock talk did not even mention homosexuality besides in a laundry list of groups who are discriminated against and in a question that was asked of Mr. Boykin, uninitiated. His speech was on the Obama campaign and spoke a message of perseverance and hope.

Perhaps the 8:00 talk did not mention it, but according to that video news report I provided the other day, Boykin included discussion of gay marriage (at least at the first talk). That is a secular press source.

Secondly, it doesn't matter if the talk was not a forum on any single issue. If advocacy of gay marriage was one among many topics, then that is a problem on a Catholic campus.

By no means should a professional and scholar be singled out by his sexual orientation for any reason. Knowledge is knowledge, and to censor that would be a sin in itself. If we were to go back and take away any knowledge that we gained from homosexuals, we could not be learning about the man who painted the Sistine Chapel or any of the great musical compositions of Tchaikovsky.

The Catholic Church does not condemn or single out people because of their homosexual orientation. In fact, there is an apostolate approved by the Catholic Church called Courage and they should be welcomed on every Catholic campus. But, I'm sure Misericordia and other universities which solicit talks by people known for advancing gay marriage won't be inviting Courage to give a talk and start a chapter at the school. That is because Courage helps people with same sex attraction (SSA) to live chaste lives. This is unpopular because it is counter-cultural, yet it is just this counter-cultural life that all single people must live (remember, the road is narrow and difficult, not broad and easy). I'm certain Bishop Martino would approve of a member of Courage with SSA coming to Misericordia to talk. Just ask him. Please check out Courage and ask Misericordia to invite them. I'll be glad to plug the event here on Te Deum Laudamus!

Furthermore, I am heterosexual and single. If I love God, I love his commandments and I will live a life of perfect chastity unless I enter into sacramental marriage. Those with homosexual tendencies are also called to chastity if they cannot enter sacramental marriage with a member of the opposite sex.

Keith Boykin was not singled out because of his sexual orientation. Mr. Boykin is well known for promoting gay marriage and according to that secular news source in Scranton, advanced gay marriage at Misericordia. Nothing prevents him from doing that in secular settings. It's covered under free speech. By the same standard, the Bishop not only has a right, but an obligation to speak up on matters of faith and morals. Does he not have a right to free speech, especially when it pertains to things happening on a Catholic campus in his diocese? Nothing prevents people from blowing him off, but it is totally imprudent to blow off one's bishop on such things.

Further, you bring up famous artists who were allegedly of homosexual orientation. Were they using their sexual orientation to advance their art? If it is true that these artists were homosexual, even had they been invited to speak at an event that was "not meant to be a forum for advocacy on any single issue" in their day, it most likely would not have been a problem. This is assuming that they weren't publicly advancing homosexual activity and marriage which....leads us back to that thing called scandal. There can be no scandal where there is no public knowledge of what the Church defines as immoral behavior and advocacy.

It has recently been extremely upsetting to find so many Catholics being so extremely judgmental and so extremely unchristian. With the words of Bishop Martino, I find myself ashamed of my church. Not of my faith and my religion, but of the views of my church which would so censor a school for no reason other than the personal life of the man speaking.
It is truly regrettable that Catholic teaching for the last 40 years has been so banal and misaligned that you, and many others, should have to suffer because you don't understand.

At the same time, our bishops are also suffering because people have turned a deaf ear to them. Much of this is because they are accustomed to not hearing their bishops because the bishops were not speaking. Now they are and while it is music to the ears of faithful Catholics, it is annoying to those who don't want to hear it. This does not make them mean. We have to look at what they are saying and measure it against Scripture, Tradition and Church documents, as well as the Church Fathers and Doctors.

If the bishop has the mind of the Church then it is wise to mind the bishop!

As Fr. Corapi has said, "Truth is not a something, it's a somebody and that somebody is Jesus Christ". Truth cannot change with each individual's desires any more than we can have different versions of the same Jesus. You can't have a Jesus who is for sex only inside of sacramental marriage, while at the same time having a Jesus who is for sex inside of any kind of marriage, including homosexual, polygamous, or otherwise.....or a Jesus who is for people having sex any time, any day, with anyone, or with anything. Which is of these variables is the true, objective reality? Which one matches Scripture?

Bishop Martino is right to speak out and he has done nothing unchristian. If anything, your bishop is the one you SHOULD look to on matters of faith and morals. When he speaks you ought to give pause and listen to him carefully.

The Catholic faith is not something that can be based on feelings and emotion. Our Lord simply laid out a teaching and allowed people to accept it or not. If they rejected the teaching, he did not go running after them, begging them to exercise humility, which is what He exemplified when he accepted death on a Cross.

I'm not only pround of my Catholic faith, but I'm proud of Bishop Martino for not neglecting the faithful of their right to know when there is a spiritual danger. He is responsible before God for all that he does, or does not do, to protect the faithful.

Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching. (Hebrews 13: 8-9)

If anyone else wants to join in, again...please consider that not everyone has the benefit of sound catechesis. Approach it with charity and I'll post it.

Also, I may only get to publish comments later in the evening, so don't assume I'm ignoring them. I just don't have access for much of the day while I'm at work.

BREAKING: Nancy Pelosi Has Met with Abp Niederauer - Feb 8th

Pelosi has been schooled by the Pope today.

Prior to the presidential election, when Ms. Pelosi perverted Church teaching on Meet the Press in an effort to get votes for Obama, she was publicly corrected by a good many bishops, including her own. In his lengthy column on the matter, Archbishop Niederauer invited Ms. Pelosi to a private schooling meeting on September 5, 2008. Until today, it was thought that she had never made time for the meeting and many wondered how she had time to meet with the Pope.

Thanks to Real Catholic TV, we have learned today that a meeting did take place, on February 8th, quietly in a third-party home, according to Michael Voris of RCTV. He verified it with the Archdiocese of San Francisco and Pelosi's spokesperson. Michael Voris has released a new episode of The Vortex with this breaking news. See video here (had to remove the embed due to errors)

Archbishop Niederauer is currently on retreat. Please pray for him. He needs a dose of holy boldness here, for the good of Ms. Pelosi, and for the good of the faithful she has been permitted to scandalize.

Pelosi gets schooled by the Pope

I decided to come home to post this news during my lunch hour since it was, well.....hot. I'm eating lunch as I'm posting and my keyboard will never be the same.

I suspect this news has something to do with the delay in the announcement of Archbishop Dolan to the New York throne. If the Vatican had dropped that announcement the secular press would have been all over it for a couple of days, and the news that broke today would have been diffused. Rumor has it that Abp Dolan is "vacationing" in the Big Apple, so we know the announcement is coming soon....very soon. Friday would be best, in order to let this news on Nancy Pelosi to circulate well.

    PELOSI AND THE POPE

There has been a ruckus for the past week or so after it was learned that the Holy Father granted Nancy Pelosi access to a general audience. It was thought by many, that she would use it as another photo-op (like this one last year) to make her look catholic enough for the population soaking up their secular news.

The other day, I told you that Human Life International was planning to brief Pope Benedict XVI on her dismal record in support of the culture-of-death.

But, the Holy Father, far wiser than the arm-chair "popes" we ordinary Catholics can be, opened his doors when he learned she would be in town and Ms. Pelosi partipated in the general audience. However, it is what happened next that has created such a buzz on the net.

He took Nancy Pelosi to the woodshed aside, with her entourage, and schooled her on the Church's position on matters pertaining to life, and then released this press statement (emphases mine in bold; comments bracketed in red):

Following the General Audience the Holy Father briefly greeted Mrs Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, together with her entourage [exactly.....witnesses....why permit a situation where it becomes his word against hers. Watch what she does in her own press release, as an example].

His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development.
There is something of importance to note...

THE HOLY FATHER ALLOWED NO PRESS OR CAMERAS!

Wise, because the photo in the link I provided above has been exploited!!! He didn't give her a chance to do that this time.

What was Pelosi's reaction? Through her spokesman, she spun offered this about the meeting (source Catholic News Service):

In a statement released by her staff, Pelosi said, "In our conversation, I had the opportunity to praise the church's leadership in fighting poverty, hunger and global warming, as well as the Holy Father's dedication to religious freedom and his upcoming trip and message to Israel." The papal trip is scheduled for the second week of May.

Pelosi also said, "I was proud to show His Holiness a photograph" from a papal audience she had with her parents in the 1950s, "as well as a recent picture of our children and grandchildren." Pelosi's husband, Paul, accompanied her to the meeting with the pope.

Archbishop Burke says "yes" to Latin Mass Society; Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor says "no"

News broke the other day about how Archbishop Burke had accepted the invitation of the Latin Mass Society to celebrate the usus antiquior at Westminster Cathedral, but Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, a staunch opponent of the TLM said, "no".

It is always customary for a bishop to have permission of the Ordinary of a diocese to celebrate Mass in his diocese. In an excellent commentary on this situation, Fr. Z explains protocol and how the Traditional Latin Mass community should carry on from here in that diocese. It is a good lesson for all to observe.

As an aside, I'm of the opinion that this bad thing will turn into a good thing for Westminster. Cardinal Murphy O'Connor is on his way out and the Holy See will be replacing him. Hopefully, it will be with someone who will, without hesitatation, exercise charity and pastoral sensitivity in taking down the proverbial brick wall in Westminster.

I know if at least one Catholic Mom in Hawaii who must be overjoyed.
The miracle that tipped the scale? A woman cured of cancer.

Along with Blessed Damien, will be Bl. Rafael Arnáiz Barón who died at 27 from a diabetic coma. He is known as one of the greatest mystics of the 20th century:

    Bl Rafael Arnaiz Baron 1911-1938

Born in Burgos, Spain. As a young man he was active in the Apostleship of Prayer, Nocturnal Adoration and Our Lady's Sodality. He studied architecture in Madrid, but left a promising career to enter the monastery of San Isidro in 1934. Due to diabetes, he was obliged to leave the monastery three times but each time he returned despite the heroic immolation that such re-entries exacted of him. He made a total and absolute offering of himself to God in hiddenness and silence. After his death, his virtues and writings became known and the cause for his beatification was introduced. The diocesan process was successfully completed in 1967, and he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1992.

Despite Bishop Martino's Protest, Gay-Right's Speech Takes Place at Misericordia

While bishops may not have as much jurisdiction as we would like (as in, pulling the plug on such an event), I'm glad Bishop Martino did not sit back and do nothing. He at least brought attention to the fact that the speaker brought in by Misericordia University had an agenda that was totally contrary to the Catholic faith.

    See more here:

    Let's backtrack here....

The day before, according to this news report, none of these "controversial" issues which counters Church teachings was suppose to be on tap. But, from the video above, it seems that the Bishop was correct.

If you haven't seen this yet, you have to watch it. I'm late getting to it.

Talented, eh? I hope she goes into journalism. We need solid Christian people, who are not disoriented in the news business.

Most adults can't speak on the topic of abortion as well as this child did.

Happy Birthday Mom...thanks for the gift of Life!!!

Today is my mother's birthday. As I have done in previous years, I will buy her a dozen roses and thank her for giving life to me and my siblings. I got the idea a few years back after learning that an archbishop or Cardinal did this every year and thought it was sweet. Does anyone remember who that was?

Let's start a new Hallmark thing and ask for cards that thank our Mothers for the gift of life on their birthdays.

Mom is 77 years old and still suffering from an acute gout attack. Please keep her in your prayers. She is getting better, but has a long way to go yet.

....that New York would have a new Archbishop named and that Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee would have the helm.

If the announcement is coming today, February 17th, it has not made it into the daily Bollettino.

Yet, journalist and blogger, Rocco Palmo is suggesting people refresh frequently for updates in a post made at 5:56am, just 4 minutes before the Bollettino is published daily. Did it simply not make the Bollettino? We shall see - I have seen it happen once before.

    (update 6:33 am): Rocco Writes:

SVILUPPO: 6.20... and still quiet -- no release from Gotham chancery, no pickups from the TV stations, no drop of anything in the Holy See's Daily Bollettino... but the latter could simply be taking its usual time to update.

By quarter past, a friend in Gotham sent the following note: "I'm ready to pull my hair out."Aren't we all?If nothing appears here by, say, 6.35, consider the search party called off for another day.

I must say that since I've been watching the Bollettino for US bishop appointments, I have never witnessed it change once it has been posted. I think we are waiting another day, another week, or perhaps until the Vatican sees we aren't looking and least expect it.

I have to head off to work so happy Archbishop-appointment-watching.

Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) to appear in General Audience with the Pope

Let's hope the Holy Father does not give her an opportunity for a photo op that will be used for more scandalous perversions of the Catholic faith by the Speaker of the House.

    From AFP:

US House Speaker Pelosi to meet pope: Vatican

VATICAN CITY (AFP) — Visiting US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi will have an audience with Pope Benedict XVI during her weeklong visit to Italy, a Vatican official said Monday.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, the official told AFP, saying it would likely occur after the pope's weekly general audience.

Pelosi, who describes herself as an "ardent" Catholic while advocating reproductive rights, will be the highest-ranking US official to see the pope since President Barack Obama took office last month.

The new Democratic administration is at odds with the Vatican over abortion, stemcell research and other bioethical issues.

Senior Vatican officials slammed Obama's rapid overturning of a ban on US government funding for family planning groups around the world that carry out or facilitate abortions.

Obama signed the executive order cancelling the eight-year-old restrictions imposed by his predecessor George W. Bush on the third full day of his presidency.

The Roman Catholic Church has also criticised the approval of US authorities for the first human trials using embryonic stemcells of a therapy to help paralysed patients regain movement.

    [snip]

Just days ago, Human Life International said they were going to make sure the Holy Father was aware of Pelosi's dismal culture-of-death record.

Fr. Tom Euteneuer, president of Human Life International (HLI), told LifeSiteNews.com that HLI will be briefing the Vatican "so they are aware of her dismal record on life issues.

"It is our hope that the Holy Father will not grant the floundering Speaker of the House what she surely wants and expects, a quick and valuable photo-op, but will rather give her a stern lecture on contraception and abortion and let her know that her eternal salvation is in danger," said Fr. Euteneuer.

"Further, this would be the perfect opportunity to formally excommunicate the Speaker, as she has done everything a public official possibly can to declare her lack of communion with the Holy Father and the Roman Catholic Church on every conceivable issue."

Sadly, excommunication during a general audience, no matter how well earned, is not likely. I would be happy if the Holy Father had a private audience with her to gain whatever understanding he needed, and to be of assistance to Archbishop Niederauer.

She has time to fly to Rome to meet the Pope, but her archbishop is still waiting for Mrs. Pelosi to schedule that meeting she promised him in September when she skewed Catholic teaching on Meet the Press. That interview yielded public corrections from bishops across the country. More recently, Pelosi proposed that having funds for contraception in the stimulus bill would save money.

George Cardinal Pell backs Archbishop Bathersby on actions taken regarding Fr. Peter Kennedy

Cardinal Pell has spoken, but first a recap and some notes....

It's getting down to the wire for Fr. Peter Kennedy in South Brisbane, Australia, who refused to accept and convey the Church's teachings on a number of issues at St. Mary's. There have been invalid baptisms using the wrong formula, questionable marriages, and one has to wonder whether the Mass is even valid (video can be seen in this earlier post).

The priest has vowed not to go down quietly and has considerable support from his parishioners and others from outside the parish, who would like Church teaching to be dynamic and relative to suit every individual's needs and desires.

I have received several comments that I cannot post. If I could address the errors in these comments without re-writing half of the Catholic Catechism, I would have done so. It is clear by these very passionate comments in support of Fr. Kennedy, that the people writing them do not know the Catholic faith. Since I cannot address these many errors in a reasonable amount of writing space, I do not want to lead others into scandal by giving such statements an open platform.

I would urge Fr. Kennedy's supporters to spend time learning the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Approach it not with what you want it to teach, but with an open mind to learn what it teaches. Pray for enlightenment. Truth is not changing or dynamic, but fixed and static. You cannot have several versions of objective truth any more than you can have several versions of Jesus.

Archbishop Bathersby cannot concern himself with emotions and feelings, but with the salvation of those in his care. He is doing that by removing Fr. Peter Kennedy after giving him ample opportunity to learn and make adjustments accordingly. He is providing a shepherd that will offer the true Catholic faith - a faith which does not condemn people with homosexual orientation, but which urges them to live chaste lives like any unmarried heterosexual person must do. People need to align themselves with the teachings of the Church, not the other way around.
EDIT: If you struggle with same-sex attraction and want to live out your Catholic faith in it's fullness, visit COURAGE - a Church-approved apostolate.

    CARDINAL PELL SPEAKS

Cardinal George Pell backs Archbishop John Bathersby over St Mary's

    Courier-Mail Australia

    Greg Stolz and Margaret Wenham
    February 04, 2009 11:00pm

ARCHBISHOP of Sydney Cardinal George Pell has given his tacit blessing for the possible excommunication of a rebel Brisbane priest and his 800-strong flock.

Cardinal Pell said he was a "friend and supporter" of Brisbane Archbishop John Bathersby, who will rule on whether to expel St Mary's priest Father Peter Kennedy and his supporters from the South Brisbane church.

Father Kennedy and his congregation have caused uproar for blessing homosexuals and allowing females to preach.

While refusing to comment directly on the controversy, Cardinal Pell, who was in Queensland yesterday, unreservedly backed Brisbane's Archbishop.

"I'm a friend and supporter of Archbishop Bathersby and I wish him well in a very difficult situation," he said.

St Mary's, which for almost 30 years has been a refuge for South Brisbane's homeless including Aborigines, has been under threat of closure since August, when an aggrieved churchgoer lodged a formal complaint about its practices to the Vatican.

Archbishop Bathersby wrote the church a six-page letter alleging it was out of communion with the Roman Catholic Church on a range of issues and should close.

He had been expected to rule on the church's fate last month.

St Mary's community member Karyn Walsh said nothing had been received from the Archbishop since his return from holidays earlier this week.

"We had no idea the Archbishop would be away for so long," she said.

    "We're just waiting to hear."

Archbishop Bathersby was in Sydney yesterday and could not be contacted.

It's Bishop Martino....again, this time taking on Misericordia University for inviting gay-rights advocate

Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton does not walk on eggshells and makes Catholic teaching very clear in his diocese. This time, he is taking on Misericordia University for signing on a gay-rights advocate to talk tomorrow.

It was just about two weeks ago that Bishop Martino provided an open letter to Senator Bob Casey informing him that unless he rescinded his vote on the Martinez ammendment, he would be "formally cooperating in evil".

This is the bishop who stood up at the USCCB's annual fall conference and said that the bishops would one day have to deal with their "collective reticence" on the question of Catholic politicians who support abortion rights in defiance of church teaching.

And it's the same Bishop Martino who crashed a pre-election forum held on Catholic property in which some were skewing Church documents, notably the USCCB's Faithful Citizenship, to the advantage of pro-choice pols (and against Catholic teaching).

Emphases mine in bold, comments in red...

Update: Bishop Martino criticizes appearance of gay-rights advocate

Scranton Bishop Joseph Martino today publicly criticized a local Catholic university’s plan to host a gay-rights advocate on Tuesday.

The bishop voiced “absolute disapproval” of Misericordia University’s hosting Keith Boykin, whom Bishop Martino calls an author and “avid supporter of same-sex marriage.”

Bishop Martino calls Mr. Boykin’s beliefs “disturbingly opposed to Catholic moral teaching.”

Misericordia understands the “bishop’s criticism,” according to a statement the school released today.

But the statement also notes that Mr. Boykin’s speech is not meant to be a forum for advocacy on any single issue [it doesn't matter - it can lead people into scandal if they know what he represents, which counters Catholic moral teaching].

“Misericordia University is committed deeply to its Catholic mission. Inseparable from that mission is our identity as an academic institution where ideas and positions are explored critically and freely,” the release stated. [Hello?!?!? Is anybody home??? The two identities must be compatible, not in conflict.]

Efforts to reach Mr. Boykin have not been successful. Mr. Boykin, a New York Times best-selling author and Harvard law school classmate of President Barack Obama, will speak twice at Misericordia on Tuesday, once at 2 p.m. in the Bevevino Library and again at 8 p.m. in the Lemmond Theater at Walsh Hall.

The diocese’s statement concludes: “The faithful of the Diocese of Scranton, the Bishop observed, should be in no doubt that Misericordia University in this instance is seriously failing in maintaining its Catholic identity.”

Misericordia University, based in Dallas, Luzerne County, is a Catholic-affiliated school founded in 1924 by the Religious Sisters of Mercy.

Mr. Boykin is to be hosted by the university’s Diversity Institute, the bishop says. The institute’s goal is “working collaboratively with community members to promote multi-cultural understanding and the elimination of all forms of discrimination,” according to its Web site.

I wonder if Bishop Martino will be attending the talk for a followup.

Continue to pray for victims, and survivors of Australian wildfires

The wildfires in Australia have left a path of destruction, death, and suffering. People have died in their cars, and in their homes. As you can imagine, wildlife has also been affected. The photo below has been widely circulated on the internet (click the pic for the background story).

In some quarters, there is more compassion for wildlife, than there is for people - in particular the unborn. However, being pro-life, and having a primary focus on humans suffering amidst such disasters does not mean we cannot have pity on God's creatures, also suffering needlessly, given that these fires were deliberately set.
Pray for an end to these fires, for the repose of the souls of those who have been lost, and for the survivors who are left without their loved ones, and their homes.

    From the AP:

WHITTLESEA, Australia – Australians mourning the lives lost in horrific wildfires last week sought comfort at churches Sunday even as firefighters continued to battle a dozen blazes still burning in the state.

Fire engines raced past the small, 140-year-old Christ Church in Whittlesea while the Archbishop of Melbourne was leading a service, their sirens briefly drowning out a song.

More than 180 people were killed and 1,800 homes destroyed when some 400 blazes — some thought to have been deliberately set — tore across Victoria state on Feb. 7 in Australia's worst-ever wildfire disaster.

Across the 1,500-square mile (3,900-square kilometer) fire zone, residents and friends gathered at church services to pray for the dead. The scene was repeated at churches across the country.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd attended a service in the town of Wandong, where he joined residents in placing leaves and flowers into a bowl of water in a symbol of remembrance and rebuilding.

Update: Rogue Australian priest vows not to go down quietly

A little dissent leads to lots of dissent. Fuzzy, loop-hole theology which was the staple at some seminaries throughout the world for decades is manifested in what we see going on here. Since this matter has been going on for some six years, it is also an example of how bad things can get when it is not nipped early. An entire flock is in danger of falling away because they don't have the necessary, authentic catechesis to see the gravity of this thing, in which they are involved. If you watch the video clip in the first link below, you will see that everything is based on emotion and feelings, not anything objective.

You may recall the odd case of a priest in Australia I covered last week (with video clip) who has taken his parish to such extremes that what goes on there can only be described as no longer Catholic. Even the baptisms do not use the proper formula so they are invalid. Archbishop Bathersby of Brisbane has been working to bring the priest and his parish back into communion for six months now and the countdown is on with just 8 days left.

Initially, it sounded like the rogue priest would simply leave after the 21st and take a chunk of his congregation with him to some other place. What has changed in the past week is that the priest said he will not go down quietly.

This situation deserves our deepest prayers, as well as acts of reparation.

The archbishop said that he will call in the police to remove Fr. Kennedy if necessary. Two officers have already paid one visit, but were unable to make contact with the priest.

Emphases in bold mine, as are comments bracketed in red...

From the Catholic Leader in Australia:

ST Mary’s Parish in South Brisbane, at odds with the Church over matters of communion, will be administered by the St Stephen’s Cathedral dean Fr Ken Howell from next Saturday, February 21. [pray for this priest as he will have his hands full]

Archbishop John Bathersby of Brisbane in a letter informed St Mary’s administrator Fr Peter Kennedy last weekend that he was cancelling his appointment, unless he “were to resign beforehand”.

Fr Kennedy and the St Mary’s community had failed to agree to directives from the archbishop for Fr Kennedy to cease practices at St Mary’s “that separated it from communion with the Roman Catholic Church”.

In an August 22 letter to Fr Kennedy last year, the archbishop listed problematic practices in four matters – those of faith, liturgy, governance and authority.

Australian Catholic University’s theology and philosophy associate professor Fr David Pascoe told The Catholic Leader he believed, for Archbishop Bathersby, Fr Kennedy had never satisfactorily attended to these theological issues which “are at the heart of the St Mary’s problem”.

However, Fr Kennedy, speaking at St Mary’s Church last Sunday, while acknowledging that “liturgical rules had been broken”, said the community had “done nothing to deserve exclusion from communion with the Church”.
[trust me, the breaking of liturgical rubrics was not at the top of the list, as bad as they were. There are invalid baptisms taking place there, among other things]

Archbishop Bathersby in an interview on ABC radio last Monday said Fr Kennedy’s role as “shepherd of the flock” was “enormously important”.

“I think the theology of South Brisbane is what is quite a big problem there, whether they believe in Jesus, whether they believe in the Trinity, whether they baptise the correct way, whether they celebrate Mass the correct way, all of those things,” he said.

Fr Pascoe said the archbishop’s letter in August had been a significant moment in the exchange between the parish of St Mary’s and the archbishop.

“In the archbishop’s letter there were four key matters that needed to be addressed by St Mary’s,” he said.

“These are the major theological issues where the archbishop sees that the community has put itself outside communion with the Catholic Church.

“These issues were under the headings of faith, liturgy, governance and authority.”

Fr Pascoe said that Fr Kennedy’s claim that St Mary’s was in communion with the Catholic Church was “simply not enough”.

“Any response clearly didn’t adequately address the major issues as outlined by the archbishop to show how they were in communion with the Church as a whole,” he said.

Archbishop Bathersby has advised Fr Kennedy that if he wishes to retire from active service as a priest he will be assisted in the same fashion as any other retired archdiocesan priest
. [please pray that he chooses this option]
We get a deeper glimpse at just how bad things are in this recent Courier Mail article

"It's not a situation I want to face, but nevertheless, with advice, I'll do what I have to do," the Archbishop told The Courier-Mail.

"I would hope it would not come to that because it wouldn't be good for South Brisbane, it wouldn't be good for the church, it wouldn't be good for Christianity in general."

Father Kennedy said this week he would not leave quietly amid talks of a sit-in by parishioners.

Archbishop Bathersby said he anticipated the sacking of the 71-year-old rogue priest would result in many members of the congregation leaving St Mary's, but warned Father Kennedy faced excommunication if he continued in the same vein.

Some of the complaints against Father Kennedy include allowing a Buddhist statue in the church, changing the words when performing sacraments and questioning the virgin birth of Jesus.

    "
To deny Jesus was (the) Son of God is to absolutely destroy the Christian faith," Archbishop Bathersby said.

The Archbishop also questioned the legitimacy of some marriages over which Father Kennedy presided.

He also acknowledged the situation had caused a considerable backlash in the Catholic community.

"Here are Christians writing to me and calling me the most abominable names and cursing me to kingdom come - (saying) 'may you fry in hell's fire forever and ever'," he said.

"Not to mention the real swear words that come through the phone and these are supposed to be members of the Christian community."
This does not look good and with the priest digging in his heals, this sad ending is about to get worse.

UPDATE: Fr. Peter Kennedy collapsed following what could have been his last Mass at St. Mary's. He is supposedly fine, but his emotions got the best of him. Please continue to pray for this priest, the congregation and Archbishop Bathersby.

Fire at Detroit's Sacred Heart Major Seminary - Thursday Night

Source: Joe Kohn The Michigan Catholic
Archbishop Allen Vigneron (second from left) surveys the damage with (from left) dean of studies Fr. Todd Lajiness, the archbishop’s secretary Msgr. John Kasza, and director of undergraduate seminarians Fr. Mark Hamilton

One thing Archbishop Vigneron did not need in this economic downturn is a fire at his seminary.

    From the Michigan Catholic:

Detroit -- A fire Thursday night, Feb. 12, burned a hole in the ceiling of the main chapel at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, also causing damage to several pews, the floor, and smoke damage to other pews and the chapel walls.

Seminary rector Msgr. Jeffrey Monforton on Friday morning said the fire apparently was electrical and caused by a light fixture. An assessment of the damage was being conducted, he said, and repairing the damage "is going to entail serious costs."

The hole in the ceiling doesn't expose the chapel to daylight -- the roof is intact above the ceiling -- but pieces from the ceiling fell onto some pews, burning them, and damaged the original floor of the chapel, which was built in the 1920's.

On Friday morning, as Archbishop Allen Vigneron was talking with seminary staff and surveying the damage, the chapel's tabernacle had been emptied and the hymnals were stacked near a side altar.

As bad as the damage was, Msgr. Monforton said it could have been much worse. Seminarians were in the chapel at the time of the fire for Eucharistic Adoration. No smoke or fire detectors went off when the fire started shortly before midnight, but the seminarians and staff were quick to notice and respond.

"I give all credit to Divine Providence that we had men in the chapel at that time," said Msgr. Monforton.

"The fire alarm last evening was human, not mechanical," he added. "It's a great disappointment, yet at the same time I'm very proud of the men and how they responded."

Novena Prayer for Pope Benedict XVI - Feb 14-22

The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) offers us this Novena to pray for Pope Benedict XVI. This comes in light of what he is trying to do with the SSPX, and the many attacks from within, and outside of the Church, to derail it or skew public thinking on it.

Fatima Devotions at Grotto Tomorrow - Friday!

Just a reminder that Assumption Grotto is holding Fatima Devotions the 13th of each month. This month (and most months, depending on when the 13th falls), there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 6:00 until the 7:00pm Mass. Following Mass, I believe the Holy Rosary will be prayed, ( but what is below suggests someone may lead it during the Holy Hour). From the Grotto website:

13th of the Month Club News There was a good response for the inauguration of the first gathering of the 13th of the Month Club on January 13. The group is family friendly. This is a great opportunity for the entire family to come together at the feet of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament to be formed by Our Lady in the spirituality of the Fatima Message.

Mark your calendar for Friday February 13. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the church from 6-7PM for private prayer. A volunteer may lead the Rosary during this time. Holy Mass begins at 7PM with a homily on some aspect of The Fatima Message. After Mass another period of exposition with public prayers of reparation to ask God’s Mercy on our country and our families during these times of uncertainty. The prayers will conclude with Benediction.

All are invited to the shrine lounge for a brief planning session and opportunity to obtain materials for further study of the Fatima Message and its applications in our present time

Rabbi hits the nail on the head on destructive nature of dissenting Catholics

Excellent article by Hilary White of LifeSiteNews.com.

An orthodox Rabbi speaks out on how the "left-wing" of the Church is damaging her. Rabbi Levin also spoke about Bishop Williamson and how the Church is handling his odd views towards the holocaust.

You may want to read this at the blog of Fr. Z, just for his added comments, and for the ever active combox.

Left Wing of the Catholic Church Destroying the Faith Says Orthodox Rabbi
    By Hilary White, Rome correspondent

ROME, February 11, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The dissident, leftist movement in the Catholic Church over the last forty years has severely undermined the teaching of the Catholic Church on the moral teachings on life and family, a prominent US Orthodox rabbi told LifeSiteNews.com. Rabbi Yehuda Levin, the head of a group of 800 Orthodox rabbis in the US and Canada, also dismissed the accusations that the Holy See had not sufficiently distanced itself from the comments made by Bishop Richard Williamson of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) on the Holocaust.

"I support this move" to reconcile the traditionalist faction in the Church, he said, "because I understand the big picture, which is that the Catholic Church has a problem. There is a strong left wing of the Church that is doing immeasurable harm to the faith."

Rabbi Levin said that he understands "perfectly" why the reconciliation is vital to the fight against abortion and the homosexualist movement.

"I understand that it is very important to fill the pews of the Catholic Church not with cultural Catholics and left-wingers who are helping to destroy the Catholic Church and corrupt the values of the Catholic Church." This corruption, he said, "has a trickle-down effect to every single religious community in the world."

"What's the Pope doing? He's trying to bring the traditionalists back in because they have a lot of very important things to contribute the commonweal of Catholicism.

"Now, if in the process, he inadvertently includes someone who is prominent in the traditionalist movement who happens to say very strange things about the Holocaust, is that a reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater and start to condemn Pope Benedict? Absolutely not."

During a visit to Rome at the end of January, Rabbi Levin told LifeSiteNews.com that he believes the media furore over the lifting of the excommunications of the four bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X is a red herring. He called "ridiculous" the accusations that in doing so Pope Benedict VXI or the Catholic Church are anti-Semitic and described as "very strong" the statements distancing the Holy See and the Pope from Williamson's comments.

Rabbi Levin was in Rome holding meetings with high level Vatican officials to propose what he called a "new stream of thinking" for the Church's inter-religious dialogue, one based on commonly held moral teachings, particularly on the right to life and the sanctity of natural marriage.

"The most important issue," he said, is the work the Church is doing "to save babies from abortion, and save children's minds, and young people's minds, helping them to know right and wrong on the life and family issues."

"That's where ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue has to go."

Although numbers are difficult to determine, it is estimated that the Society of St. Pius X has over a million followers worldwide. The traditionalist movement in the Catholic Church is noted for doctrinal orthodoxy and enthusiasm not only for old-fashioned devotional practices, but for the Church's moral teachings and opposition to post-modern secularist sexual mores. Liberals in the Church, particularly in Europe, have bitterly opposed all overtures to the SSPX and other traditionalists, particularly the Pope's recent permission to revive the traditional Latin Mass.

The Vatican announced in early January that, as part of ongoing efforts to reconcile the breakaway group, the 1988 decree of excommunication against the Society had been rescinded. Later that month, a Swedish television station aired an interview, recorded in November 2008, in which Bishop Richard Williamson, one of the four leaders of the Society, said that he did not believe that six million Jews were killed in the Nazi death camps during World War II.

At that time, the media erupted with protests and accusations that the Catholic Church, and especially Pope Benedict XVI, are anti-Semitic.

Rabbi Levin particularly defended Pope Benedict, saying he is the genius behind the moves of the late Pope John Paul II to reconcile the Church with the Jewish community.

"Anyone who understands and follows Vatican history knows that in the last three decades, one of the moral and intellectual underpinnings of the papacy of Pope John Paul II, was Cardinal Ratzinger.

"And therefore, a lot of the things that Pope John Paul did vis-à-vis the Holocaust, he [Benedict] might have done himself, whether it was visiting Auschwitz or visiting and speaking in the synagogues or asking forgiveness. A lot of this had direct input from Cardinal Ratzinger. Whoever doesn't understand this doesn't realise that this man, Pope Benedict XVI, has a decades-long track record of anti-Nazism and sympathy for the Jews."

    Our Lady of Lourdes

A photo taken at the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes last year. Following Mass, all priests and deacons knelt before the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and led a full church in the Holy Rosary.

It's been a long two weeks with my mother's right hand all crippled up from an acute gout attack. It is slowly getting better, but will take time to come down. In the meanwhile, I'm going over there nearly daily or every other day, alternating with my brother to see to her needs (it's amazing how you can take your dominant hand for granted).

I've not been posting in the AM, if that explains why this comes at the end of this feast day, rather than at the beginning.

With that, I was able to make the 7:00pm Mass and was glad I got to Grotto. Following Mass, Fr. Perrone had asked all priests celebrating Masses today to allow the faithful to venerate a relic of St. Bernadette. We knelt at the altar railing, and Fr. Ward, wearing a cope, brought it past each of us to kiss.

Legion of Christ: Should the Vatican intervene, or should the Legion seek the Vatican's help?

I have not commented much on the news about Legion of Christ Founder, Marcial Maciel, whom we recently learned, fathered at least one child who is now about 20 years of age.

This has brought upon the order a great scandal, and gives some credibility to accusations that Fr. Maciel was a predator who preyed upon some seminarians. Maciel was suddenly swept into a life of prayer and pentitence, without explanation, by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 and died about a year ago.

Fr. Thomas Berg, LC wrote a letter to members of the LC apostolic movement, Regnum Christi that has been widely circulated since it was published February 8th. An anaylsis of Fr. Berg's beautiful letter by Dr. Germain Grisez, Flynn Professor of Christian Ethics at Mt. Saint Mary's is available at AmP.

I have not commented on this topic because I am an outsider who knows only what has been reported by others. This however, has not prevented me from looking at some of what I am seeing and pondering it all from a spiritual standpoint.

I do know ex-Legionaries and people who have ex-Legionaries in their families.

The examples I've seen in Fr. Jonathan Morris, LC and Fr. Thomas Williams, LC on television have left me with a favorable opinion of LC priests.

Before I go any further, I need to get some points out of the way....

Point One: Judas was a man with a vocation, called by God to be a priest. But, God gave to Judas, as he does with all of us, a free will. We don't judge the Church based on what Judas did. the apostles did not use Judas' behavior as justification to ignore what Jesus taught. Scripture reveals that Judas did not repent. Rather, he hung himself in despair. Had he sought forgiveness, it would have been given him. We do not know if Maciel confessed and repented of all of his sins or not. He has gone on to the Just Judge from Whom nothing can be hidden. I seriously hope that he did confess and repent.

Point Two: Each priest, whether diocesan, or religious order has a right to be judged not by the order in which he resides, but as an individual. If we judged priests based on their order, then one of the greatest Jesuits, John A. Hardon, SJ, would also have to be judged based on the strange teachings of certain Jesuits who engage in outright heresy. This amounts to throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Point Three: I'm tired of people using the "priest sex abuse scandal" to judge every priest. A 2002 news article about a report on priest-sex abuse compared data to that of sex-abuse by school officials. Over a 9 year period, there were 290,000 cases of school official abuse were reported vs. 11,000 cases of priest sex-abuse over a roughly 50 year period. Clearly, there is a double standard and rampant stereotyping in the media and in blogs. Charol Shakeshaft of Hofstra University concluded:

"the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."
Think about all those priestly roles you see on TV and how they are portrayed nowadays. Compare that to how Hollywood treats school officials!

A path of humility for Legion of Christ leadership

Some are calling for the Vatican to intervene because confidence in the LC leadership to do a proper self-audit is low and many questions are swirling as to whether it can continue as is. It is said that Maciel's photos have been taken down in LC buildings. But, it is not soo easy to "remove" him from other things within their structure.

There are many questions by a broad and public audience as to whether anyone knew about the founder's double-life, when they knew it, and how they may have aided him, etc. Questions loom over the heads of leadership with people wondering how they can possibly do any kind of investigation...... of themselves and those close to them. While there is a possibility that Maciel, and the kind of structure that he organized, enabled him to keep things hidden from everyone, others aren't so sure. Or, shall we say, that it is a justifiable thing to want to rule out. Only an outsider can give people the assurance that the investigation was full and proper.

In thinking through this (as a secular Carmelite), it would seem to me that we ought not look to the Vatican to intervene. Rather, we should enter an intense period of prayer that LC leadership does the right thing and seeks help from the Holy See. This is a path of humility, especially for the Legion, given it's secretive reputation.

Next to surrendering one's life, nothing can be greater than surrending one's will. For leadership to surrender their will by opening themselves to outside help, they obtain an opportunity to practice the obedience they so cherish.

What does obedience have to do with anything?

Obedience is a gateway through which only the Holy Spirit and holy Angels may pass. It serves also as a barrier for the Angel of Darkness whose pride is much too great to permit passage. Obedience is also a pathway of grace. The pain of not getting to do things your way, is an excellent, God-pleasing offering.

What is the future of the Legion of Christ? Only the Holy Spirit knows at this point. The best way to find out is for the LC to enable the Holy Spirit to do His work. Often times this happens through others. Surely, many graces will accompany such an act of humility - to seek help.

It will also go a long way in healing the wounds of scandal and mistrust. If after short time the Legion does not seek help, I pray that Vatican will step in for the good of all involved.

As for the rest of us, if you really want to do something about this situation, go to Adoration. There are a good many innocent people - all victims in one way or another, of the sins that one man probably thought were relatively hidden. Pray for the recovery of any victims of physical sexual abuse, especially that their faith is not lost. Pray for the innocent priests and lay people suffering now from the sins of their spiritual father. Pray for the repose of Maciel's soul, as well. Charity and mercy are not things we extend only to those we like and love.

Updates on SSPX and Bp Williamson

Several things have happened on the SSPX matter since I have last had a chance to blog.

It was first rumored that Bp Williamson, the holocaust denying bishop, had been removed from his position as rector of the SSPX seminary in Argentina. Then word floated out that it was not the case.

It now appears that Bishop Williamson has indeed accepted the decision of his Superior, Bernard Fellay, to step down.

    Rorate writes:

Bishop Williamson, as he declared in his interview [to Der Spiegel] does not wish to "hurt in any way the work of the Fraternity"; that is why he accepted, on January 31, the decision of the Superior General [Bishop Fellay] to relieve him of his position as director of the Seminary of La Reja (Argentina).

While the secular press reported fallout from the outrageous position of Bp Williamson, I wonder how many are reporting things like this:

Rorate also has a post up, with a link to the translated press release by the Holy See:

COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE HOLY SEE PRESS OFFICE AND OF THE SPOKESMAN OF THE GERMAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

The Holy Father Benedict XVI and Chancellor Mrs. Angela Merkel, in a telephone conversation requested by the same Madam Chancellor, had the opportunity of exchanging their mutual points of view in an atmosphere of great respect.

In it, both made references once again to the declarations made, respectively, by the Holy Father in the General Audience of Wednesday, January 28, and by the Madam Chancellor last Thursday.

The spokesman of the Federal Government, Mr Wilhelm, and Father Lombardi, Director of the Press Office, remarked: "It was a cordial and constructive conversation, marked by the common and profound adherence to the always valid warning of the Shoah for mankind."

And, finally, again at Rorate, the best source for updates with it's many translations:

In an interview to the RCN radio network of Colombia, Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos, president of the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei", aside from emphatically reiterating Pope Benedict's position on the Shoah, had some interesting words on current events:

"I have always had truth as a rule. The Holy Father knows this. We are moving forward, ensuring that this unity of the Church be rebuilt, and that this schism be completely ended."

"[W]hat is important at this moment is that the Pope has stopped a schism. The charity that Christ wanted to exist in the Church has been remarkably reestablished, and paths of hope are opened."

Fr. Z has some comments up on this, as well

Please continue to pray and make sacrifices for full unification of the SSPX.

Eluana Enlaro, the woman at the center of a case similar to that of Terry Schiavo has suddenly died. From Lifesite:

    Italy's "Terri Schiavo" Dies Suddenly

    By Matthew Cullinan Hofman

ROME, February 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Eluana Englaro, Italy's "Terri Schiavo," has died only four days after doctors began a "gradual" reduction in her food and water intake with the intent to cause her death.

The announcement was made by Italy's Health Minister on the floor of the Italian Senate, which was debating a bill that would have saved Englaro's life.

Although no cause of death has been announced, earlier news reports indicated that Englaro's intake of nutrients was being replaced with a heavy dose of sedatives. Palliative medication in high doses can cause a patient to die prematurely.

The news follows public statements by Englaro's physician that she has enjoyed almost perfect physical health during the 16 years following her car accident in 1992, which left her bedridden and in a minimal state of consciousness. She was 38 years old.

Back in October, our pastor initiated the Fr. Perrone Financial Appeal to generate funds to get handle some major repairs needed at a time when funds are down for most parishes due to the economy. Donations will also hep this commuter parish through tough times (we have about 800 registered families, but we have many people who come periodically to Masses, devotions and other events).

In his letter of October 15, 2008, Fr. Perrone wrote:
"That this is a time of hardship for many people cannot be denied. Yet when one considers the fact that Assumption Grotto Church was built in 1929, at the beginning of the Great Depression, and that all the same a church of superb craftsmanship and fine materials was erected it a wonderful statement about the sacrifices made by the people of that time. We have a more modest goal of raising $200,000 by March 25, 2009 in order to do the needed repairs and to secure our parish through this time.

As a partial remedy, and in recognition of the fact aht some people may not be able to attend here regularaly due to great distances, we have initiated the ACH program to accept your weekly offering. This allows you to have an automatic transfer from your checking account to the parish. The system is 100% secure. Should you be unable to contribute for a given week, you need only notify the parish and the transfer will not be made. We are also looking for a way to have contributions be made from our parish website.

Our parish is dependent not only from its parishioners but also from those outside the parish who may come here from time to time to hear Mass, receive the sacraments, be counseled, practice some particular devotions, visit the Lourdes Grotto, and so on.

Let me add to that list above, that you are reading this blog because Assumption Grotto exists. The many, beautiful photos you see, would not be possible without this parish.

I hope those in my readership will click the button below and make a contribution to Assumption Grotto so that she may continue to serve as a witness for reverent liturgies, and a strong Catholic identity.

    Legionaries of Christ and Maciel

We continue to follow this very sad story involving the Legionaries of Christ and their founder, Marcial Maciel.

Canonist Ed Peters offers further thoughts worth reading in his latest post, So if Maciel was a criminal (or a sociopath), what of his charism?

As an aside, I watched World Over Live with Raymond Arroyo, who interviewed Fr. Jonathon Morris, LC and Fr. Thomas Williams, LC. If that show did not move you to pray for the LC priests and the members of Regnum Christi, I don't know what will. (N.B.: For the next few days you can listen to a podcast here of that segment which takes up about the first fifteen minutes of the show)

I hope the Vatican will intervene and assist the many good priests and lay people involved with this apostolate move forward in a way most appropriate, given what has come to light.

Wayward Australian Parish Heading Towards a Breakaway

I have been following this for the last few months and have not really posted on it until now. I am doing so today because it seems to be nearing an end - a very sad end.

St. Mary's in Brisbane has sadly strayed not only on the liturgy, but on Catholic doctrine.

Archbishop John Bathersby of the Archdiocese of Brisbane has been trying to correct the problems for 6 months. From an article with ABC in Australia

The Archbishop of Brisbane, John Bathersby, previously warned Father Peter Kennedy to stop flouting church rules or face the sack.

In a letter received on Friday, Archbishop Bathersby said Father Kennedy and "the community have not budged an inch".

It says Father Kennedy’s appointment will be terminated on February 21, unless he resigns first.

Father Kennedy says he is considering his options.

"I’ve been here 28 years and I know this community is solidly behind me, and so we could go elsewhere," he said.

In the letter, Archbishop Bathersby says parishioners cannot be stopped from breaking away but has warned them they will not be in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

In this video you get an idea that this is not your run-of-the-mill liturgical abuse. There is much more under the surface. What I think is even more sad, is that it took video footage captured by other Catholics, sent to the Vatican and the Archbishop to get things moving. This has all been going on for many years. One wonders, how many people have been led into grave scandal through the actions of this disoriented priest over the roughly 6 year period that other Catholics had been protesting the happenings at this parish. What I'm not clear on is whether any of those lodging complaints are from St. Mary's (a disaffected group), or if they are strictly from a neighboring community. Either way, it is good that it has all come to light because people cannot continue to be exposed to this parish as a Catholic parish, in communion with Rome.

Here in my neck of the woods there a parish every other mile. I don't know how many other parishes there are in South Brisbane, and how far people would have to commute without St. Mary's.

Will Fr. Kennedy leave the church building behind if he is ousted, or will he and his parishioners try to take the property?

Fr. Z has a podcast in in this post in which the dissident priest says he does not believe there is a heaven or a hell. There are many other such conflicts with Catholic teaching throughout the interview.

Why is this even legal????? Hospital approves late-term abortions in Madison, WI

    Disgusting.

From LifeNews.com: Wisconsin's Madison Surgery Center Approves New Late-Term Abortion Business

This is inexcusable and barbaric. When will the madness end?

On February 4th, falling on deaf ears, Bishop Morlino wrote to the hospital (PDF):

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the UW Hospitals and Clinics Authority Board,

Thank you for affording me the opportunity to offer a few words in regard to your discussion on whether to allow for second term abortions at the Madison Surgery Center. I am sorry that I am unable to be here in person, as I am currently concluding a meeting of the National Catholic Bioethics Center, of whose board I am chair.

I write to you today as one charged with caring not only for the 270,000 Catholics in the Diocese of Madison, but for all men and women in southwestern Wisconsin. These are men and women who are your patients and future patients, your doctors, nurses, and staffs. I offer these words today out of care for you – and truly I do care for you.

And though I am a Catholic Bishop I write to you today, cognizant of the fact that not all of you may be Catholic or Christian at all. I write today with an appeal to reason and good will, common to all men and women. Christians, Jews, and Muslims know that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, but putting aside our faith or lack thereof, each of us, by nature of our being human, can know, by reason alone and by simple biology that even at the earliest stages of its existence, a human embryo is a unique, living individual of the human species, one with its own unique DNA. Under consideration here is a question regarding individuals who are even easier to recognize as unique; individuals with the same inherent dignity as you and I, and deserving of particular rights.

The unique persons in question, those who are between thirteen and twenty-two weeks of gestation, are at the very least, on the verge of viability. Some could be within days or even hours of being considered (were they to be born prematurely) your most helpless and desperate patients – in need of constant, intensive care and protection. And yet actions are being considered which would treat them not as unique individuals and patients, but as pieces of tissue.

Nor can we simply rely upon the argument that the proposed actions are perfectly legal. Our world has learned, ever-so-tragically, that what is legal does not necessarily constitute what is morally right. When looking at the official or unofficial policies and despicable pogroms of foreign countries, the very legal, albeit embarrassing, hatred and disenfranchisement of individuals in our own nation’s history, or more recent allowable actions, it is easy to see that legal acts often are simply not morally tolerable. We do not have to choose to participate in these “legal evils,” rather we must choose to respect every unique individual human being, regardless of their race, creed, or stage of mental or physical development.

To cooperate in these procedures would be to act not only in violation of all that hospitals stand for, but in violation of our humanity. This proposed expansion in the destruction of innocent life will serve only as a further humiliation of our human dignity and as such I remain diametrically opposed to it.

On behalf of the quarter million Catholics in this area and all men and women of good will, on behalf of the voiceless human lives who come through your doors, I ask you to preserve the purity of your art, working to bring about healing and throwing off the temptation to act as God with regard to human life. I ask you to use your awesome responsibility to choose warmth, sympathy, and understanding for the most weak in your care.

Thank you for listening to my reflections in this matter.

    Faithfully yours,
+The Most Rev. Robert C. Morlino
    Bishop of Madison

Bishop Vasa: Some forms of so-called 'contraception' take a human life

The columns of the Baker, Oregon bishop, are well worth checking in on. I have blogged on Bishop Vasa several times (see links at the bottom).

This week, he talks about how some forms of contraception are not preventing conception, but causing abortions.

    Print Edition: 02/05/2009

Some forms of so-called 'contraception' take a human life

    By Bishop Robert Vasa

BEND — It is impossible for the Church to treat the subject of the dignity of a human person without reiterating its consistent teaching about the sinfulness of artificial contraception. Dignitas Personae, a 2008 instruction from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, does not make any direct comment about whether contraceptive pharmaceuticals (i.e. the pill) are abortifacient but this does not mean that the question is completely ignored. The document does distinguish between those mechanisms which are contraceptive, which has its own clear meaning, and those which are “interceptive” and “contragestative.” These words, too, have their own clear meaning. These latter two are designed and intended to “act after fertilization.” As such, they directly touch the human being about whom this document is concerned.

A fuller citation is in order: “Alongside methods of preventing pregnancy which are, properly speaking, contraceptive, that is, which prevent conception following from a sexual act, there are other technical means which act after fertilization, when the embryo is already constituted, either before or after implantation in the uterine wall. Such methods are interceptive if they interfere with the embryo before implantation and contragestative if they cause the elimination of the embryo once implanted.

“In order to promote wider use of interceptive methods, [IUD (intrauterine device) and the so-called “morning-after pills] it is sometimes stated that the way in which they function is not sufficiently understood. It is true that there is not always complete knowledge of the way that different pharmaceuticals operate, but scientific studies indicate that the effect of inhibiting implantation is certainly present, even if this does not mean that such interceptives cause an abortion every time they are used, also because conception does not occur after every act of sexual intercourse. It must be noted, however, that anyone who seeks to prevent the implantation of an embryo which may possibly have been conceived and who therefore either requests or prescribes such a pharmaceutical, generally intends abortion.” (D.P.,23)

This last sentence is most significant: “anyone who seeks to prevent the implantation of an embryo which may possibly have been conceived and who therefore either requests or prescribes such a pharmaceutical, generally intends abortion.” While the document very narrowly defines those mechanisms, which are primarily and intentionally designed to work in this fashion, it also acknowledges that “there is not always complete knowledge of the way that different pharmaceuticals operate.” The document does not directly state, but it certainly must be inferred, that where “scientific studies indicate that the effect of inhibiting implantation is certainly present,” abortion is generally intended. This is where the meaning of words is very important. When a “contraceptive” is solely “contraceptive,” in keeping with the clear meaning of that word, then there is no direct offense to the dignity of a newly created human being. The dignity of the spouses is a whole other question. Unfortunately, the clear meaning of the word “contraceptive” (i.e. that which prevents conception or fertilization) has been altered to mean that which prevents pregnancy. That which prevents pregnancy includes not only contraception but also interception and contragestation. Scientific studies indicate that inhibiting implantation is one of the effects of the so-called contraceptive pill. Thus the contraceptive pill is not solely contraceptive, as this document defines “contraceptive.” It would perhaps be more accurate to begin to refer to such pharmaceuticals as contra/interceptive pills. It would seem to stand to reason that what is said about interceptives in this document needs to be applied also to those pharmaceutical contraceptives, which also have an interceptive function.

This is not an easy concept to grasp and it is not any easier to explain than it is to grasp. This document concerns itself with the dignity of a human person, which needs to be extended to every human being. Since the human embryo, even hours after the establishment of a unique genetic signature consisting of 23 pairs of chromosomes, is already a human being, any action on the part of anyone who wantonly disregards that humanity violates the dignity owed to a human person. Such a violation diminishes us all.

Another area, closely aligned with abortion, is embryonic stem cell research. It must be said that the Church does not in any way disdain legitimate and ethical research, even stem cell research. The document notes: “Therapeutic protocols in force today provide for the use of adult stem cells and many lines of research have been launched, opening new and promising possibilities.” (D.P.,31) This research, following proper ethical standards, is legitimate.

The major difficulty with embryonic stem cell research, and the reason why such research becomes a part of a Church document on the dignity of a human person is that: “The obtaining of stem cells from a living human embryo, on the other hand, invariably causes the death of the embryo and is consequently gravely illicit: research, in such cases, irrespective of efficacious therapeutic results, is not truly at the service of humanity. In fact, this research advances through the suppression of human lives that are equal in dignity to the lives of other human individuals and to the lives of the researchers themselves.” (D.P.,32) Endorsing embryonic stem cell research, in the simplest of terms, is to embrace the direct and intentional killing of human beings for the sake of scientific advancement. This is grotesque. Recognizing that such a violation of human dignity is commonplace, and still worse recognizing that our government sometimes provides the money needed for this desecration, ought to be offensive to us all.

“By treating the human embryo as mere ‘laboratory material,’ the concept of human dignity itself is also subjected to alteration and discrimination. Dignity belongs equally to every single human being, irrespective of his parents’ desires, his social condition, educational formation or level of physical development.” (D.P.,22)
This includes the human embryo, a real human being.

Perfect Storm Brewing with Pro-Choice Catholic Gov Sebelius as top-pick to head HHS

Now this will get interesting if it comes to pass: A pro-choice Catholic politician heading up the Department of Health and Human Services.

Is God about to test the mettle of US bishops or what?

WASHINGTON – Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius was very near the top of President Barack Obama's list of candidates to head the Health and Human Services Department, a senior administration official said Saturday.

The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private administration deliberations, said no decision was imminent and that other candidates remain in the mix. But the official added the former Kansas insurance commissioner was rising as Obama considers prospective candidates, in no small part on the strength of her close relationship with the president.

The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private administration deliberations, said no decision was imminent. But the official added the former Kansas insurance commissioner was rising as Obama considers prospective candidates.

Sebelius would be Obama's second choice for the slot. Former Sen. Tom Daschle had to withdraw his name amid an admission he had not paid taxes on a car and driver since leaving Congress as a Democratic leader.

White House spokesman Reid Cherlin on Saturday said no decision had been made.

Sebelius was an early Obama supporter, picking his presidential campaign over that of Hillary Rodham Clinton, now the secretary of state. Sebelius worked tirelessly for Obama's bid and was a top surrogate to women's groups.

Advocacy groups like the consumer watchdog role 60-year-old Sebelius played as insurance commissioner for eight years before she became governor.

Her name had been floated for several Cabinet posts, but she announced in early December that she had removed herself from consideration from a Cabinet job, citing Kansas' budget problems that needed her attention.

Urges Congress to Maintain Current Pro-life Laws

WASHINGTON, D.C., FEB. 6, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The United States has some "modest, common-sense" policies supported by pro-lifers and abortion advocates, and a U.S. bishops' official is urging Congress to protect them.

This appeal came in a Feb. 5 letter written by Cardinal Justin Rigali, chairman of the bishops' Committee for Pro-life Activities.

He noted that one of Congress' first orders of business this session is examining appropriations bills to keep federal programs funded, and in this process, the bishop warned against removing anti-abortion clauses.

Noting the widespread lack of support for the Freedom of Choice Act, he cautioned: "While an extreme proposal like FOCA would overturn hundreds of pro-life laws at once, we are equally concerned that such laws may be overturned one at a time during Congress' appropriations process."

Gallup, NM gets a bishop - the Rev. James S. Wall

Bishop appointments are flowing and the caliber of men being chosen by Pope Benedict XVI is impressive.

The Gallup, NM seat has been vacant since spring, when Bishop Donald Pelotte was granted retirement while on medical for injuries sustained in an apparent fall in 2007.

At 44, he will become one of the youngest bishops ever appointed, and it comes just over 10 years after his ordination in 1998.

Bishop-designate Wall hails from the Phoenix diocese where Bishop Olmsted had been serving as apostolic administrator of the Gallup diocese. He is the first priest of the Phoenix diocese to be elevated to bishop.

From the Las Cruces Sun - News

Olmsted and Wall said April 23 is under consideration for Wall to take over, and the ceremony probably will be at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup.

"I'm a little nervous because being appointed bishop is not something that happens every day," Wall told reporters, adding that he was "gratefully humbled to be appointed."

Wall was born in 1964 in Ganado, Ariz., on the Navajo Nation. He said his parents, both teachers, moved in 1962 to Chinle, Ariz., also on the reservation.

His parents, who met at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, converted to Catholicism after coming into contact with two Franciscan priests, he said.
Olmsted alluded to that in a lighthearted introduction, saying that when Wall was conceived his parents were not Catholic, but they were when he was born. [Heheheeee]

Between 2003 and 2007, Wall was a member of the National Advisory Council of the U.S. Bishops' Conference. He most recently has been assigned to the diocesan pastoral center in Phoenix

At the blog of Patrick Madrid, Fr. Bud Pelletier writes:

Bishop Elect Wall is warm, funny, outgoing, athletic, and one of the best 'listeners' I know. He is truly a man of the Church, faithful to the Magisterium, dedicated to the reverent celebration of Mass, and truly a priest for the People of God. I cannot say enough positive things about him, and I know the Diocese of Gallup will be lead by one of the best Bishops in the world.

Abortion Practitioner Could Lose License After Florida Botched Abortion Hearing

    by Steven Ertelt
    LifeNews.com Editor
    February 5, 2009

Miami, FL (LifeNews.com) -- A Florida abortion practitioner could lose his license in a case that has drawn national attention for the amazing gruesomeness of what occurred. The July 2006 incident involves baby Shanice Denise Osbourne, who saw abortion facility staff hide her body from officials after a botched abortion.

According to witnesses, a young woman went to the GYN Diagnostic Center abortion facility in Hialeah, outside Miami, for an abortion. Sycloria Williams, 18, paid $1,200 for the abortion

Police say the 18-year-old had an abortion and returned the next day complaining of severe stomach pains.

Abortion facility staff told her the abortion practitioner, Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique, was unavailable and Williams eventually went into labor and delivered a baby girl, Shanice.

After the birth, abortion center owner Belkis Gonzalez cut the baby's umbilical cord, stuffed the baby's body in a biohazard bag and threw Shanice away.

Police eventually found the baby's body a week later after getting a tip after missing it during the first investigation of the abortion business.

Since the incident, pro-life advocates have called for prosecution of both Gonzalez and Renelique and that may finally be close.

The Florida Board of Medicine is set to hold a hearing in Tampa on Friday to determine whether to strip Renelique of his license.

Tom Pennekamp, a Miami attorney who is representing Williams in a lawsuit she filed against Renelique and Gonzalez, told AP that, "I don't care what your politics are, what your morals are, this should not be happening in our community."

Renelique's attorney, Joseph Harrison, told AP he thinks the allegations are "misguided and incomplete" but did not provide more information to back his claims.

AP obtained records concerning Renelique and determined that he attended medical school at University of Haiti and completed a residency in 1991 at Interfaith Medical Center in New York. The records also reveal he has paid out on five medical malpractice claims, but they did not reveal more information about those claims.

Williams was reportedly 23 weeks pregnant at the time of the abortion and received laminaria and was told to go to the A Gyn Diagnostic Center abortion business to complete the abortion process. That's when she delivered.

Meanwhile, charges have not been levied in the case, although Terry Chavez, a spokeswoman with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office, said prosecutors are nearing a decision.

Hialeah police Deputy Chief Mark Overton told the Miami Herald after the incident that "'They hid the body from us for eight days," and there is suspicion that abortion facility staff hid the body of the baby on the roof.

Overton said at the time that homicide or manslaughter charges could be filed.

''This has to be a homicide, an unlawful killing. It could be manslaughter, but we believe it falls in that realm,'' Overton said.

The city was preparing to take action on a license suspension for the GYN abortion center; but, before it could do so the owners of the abortion facility surrendered its license to operate to the state's Agency for Health Care Administration.

Gonzalez, of Miramar, Florida, owns another abortion center there and it has run afoul of state regulations on numerous occasions. It was closed last year after three employees were found to be unlicensed.

Shanice was given a proper burial last month.

Bishop Martino to Sen. Robert Casey on Formally Cooperating with Evil

Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton Pennsylvannia has delivered a public dose of catechesis to Senator Robert Casey (D-Pa) when the politician would not back the Martinez amendment. This amendment would have prevented President Obama from rescinding the Mexico City Policy that permits the use of our tax dollars for overseas abortions.

Folks, hang on because I think this is just the beginning of public statements like these. The question one might have is, what happens if the Senator does not rescind his own vote?

Emphases mine in bold, comments in red brackets.

    January 30, 2009

    Dear Senator Casey:

I wish to thank you for voting in favor of the Hatch Amendment to the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reorganization Act of 2009 which would have made unborn children eligible for child health assistance had it passed. I am grateful for what you have done on behalf of children in America who are without health care.

It is with deep regret, however, that I learned of your vote against the amendment offered by Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) to the same Children’s Health Insurance Act. Senator Martinez’s amendment would have reinstated the Mexico City Policy. That policy, instituted in 1984, required foreign non-governmental organizations “to agree as a condition of their receipt of [U.S.] federal funds” that they would “neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning . . . .” It also prohibited them from lobbying governments to make abortion legal. In effect, the reversal of the Mexico City policy will mean that over 450 million dollars of American foreign aid will go to organizations that are militant in promoting abortion as a method of population control, particularly in countries that find abortion objectionable on moral grounds [abortion is not acceptable to certain countries where it is being imposed on the people to control their population]. Senator, is not this vote a contradiction of your repeated claim that you support the protection of unborn life?

Contrary to a release issued by your office yesterday, the 1973 Helms Amendment does not provide the same restrictions as the Mexico City Policy. The Helms Amendment prohibits only U.S. funds from being used to pay for abortions or to motivate or coerce anyone to practice abortions. It in no way keeps U.S. federal funds from organizations which use their own money to pay for or support abortions. Nor does it place restrictions on organizations that lobby foreign governments to reverse anti-abortion laws. While I understand that the Helms Amendment is still in place, it does not have the same effect in limiting abortions abroad.

On Respect Life Sunday, October 5, I addressed the faithful of the Diocese of Scranton. In keeping with the obligations of my episcopal office, I called upon my brothers and sisters in faith to be vigilant against the objections to the Church’s teaching on life so prevalent in current political discourse. I vowed to be vigilant in correcting Catholics who are in error with regard to the sanctity of life. Your vote against the Mexico City Policy will mean the deaths of thousands of unborn children. This is an offense against life and a denial of our Catholic teaching on the dignity of every human being. This action is worthy of condemnation by all moral men and women.

Your release also says that you support “family planning . . . specifically because reducing unintended pregnancies reduces the number of abortions.” I remind you that it is never permissible to use immoral means (e.g., artificial contraception) to achieve a good end.

As I have done on several occasions, Senator, I urge you to consider that Church documents speak clearly and compellingly on the special responsibility that falls to you as a lawmaker to oppose abortion and other clear evils, including contraception, infanticide, euthanasia and embryonic stem-cell research. To that end, I refer you to two documents:

1.Doctrinal Note on some questions regarding The Participation of Catholics in Political Life. It says, “Catholics . . . have the right and the duty to recall society to a deeper understanding of human life and to the responsibility of everyone in this regard. John Paul II, continuing the constant teaching of the Church, has reiterated many times that those who are directly involved in lawmaking bodies have a ‘grave and clear obligation to oppose’ any law that attacks human life.”

    2. Christifideles Laici. It states, “If, indeed everyone has the mission and responsibility of acknowledging the personal dignity of every human being and of defending the right to life, some lay faithful are given a particular title to this task: such as parents, teachers, health workers and those who hold economic and political power.”

I remind you further that when he was Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Ratzinger sent a memo to the bishops of the United States advising them that advocacy of, or participation in, abortion and euthanasia can never be justified by invoking respect for the freedom of others or by appealing to the fact that civil law permits or requires it. [In other words, the ends do not justify the means. Pope John Paul II put the kabosh to consequentialism in Veritatis Splendor]. He said there can be no diversity of opinion among Catholics regarding abortion and euthanasia.

It is my deepest wish, Senator, to convince you of the necessity of rescinding your vote on the Martinez Amendment. It is the height of irony that this amendment was defeated while the Senate passed legislation to provide health insurance for children who would otherwise be without it. What hypocrisy offers health insurance to children in one part of the world when children in another part will be deprived, by the stroke of the same pen, of their first breath?

I recognize and respect the burdens that you bear as a United States Senator; however, I remind you that your responsibilities as a Catholic bound by the faith of the Church exceed even those of your office. Your failure to reverse this vote will regrettably mean that you persist formally in cooperating with the evil brought about by this hideous and unnecessary policy.

As I have done several times before, I offer to make myself available to you to discuss the grave concerns that I raise here.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Joseph F. Martino, D.D., Hist. E.D.
    Bishop of Scranton

SSPX and a NOTE OF THE SECRETARIAT OF STATE

Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, the Vatican Secretariat of State has issued this important note:

Following the reactions caused by the recent Decree of the Congregation for Bishops, with which the excommunication of the four Prelates of the Fraternity of Saint Pius X was remitted, and regarding the Negationist or Reductionist declarations on the Shoah of Bishop Williamson, of the same Fraternity, it is considered convenient to clarify a few aspects of past events.

    1. Remission of the excommunication.

As already made public previously, the Decree of the Congregation for Bishops, dated January 21, 2009, was an act by which the Holy Father graciously responded to the repeated requests by the Superior General of the Fraternity of Saint Pius X.

His Holiness desired to remove an obstacle which prevented the opening of a door to dialogue. He now expects that an equal disposition will be expressed by the four Bishops in complete adherence to the doctrine and discipline of the Church.

The extremely grave censure of latae sententiae excommunication, in which the aforementioned Bishops had incurred on June 30, 1988, then formally declared on July 1st of the same year, was a consequence of their illegitimate ordinarion by Mons. Marcel Lefebvre.

The removal of the excommunication released the four Bishops from an extremely grave canonical censure, but has not changed the juridical position of the Fraternity of Saint Pius X, which, at the current moment, does not enjoy any canonical recognition by the Catholic Church. Not even the four Bishops, though released from the excommunication, have a canonical function in the Church and they do not exercise licitly a ministry in it.

    2. Tradition, doctrine, and the Second Vatican Council.

For a future recognition of the Fraternity of Saint Pius X, the full acknowledgment of the Second Vatican Council and of the Magisterium of Popes John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, John Paul II, and of the same Benedict XVI is an indispensable condition

As it was already affirmed in the Decree of January 21, 2009, the Holy See will not avoid, in ways deemed appropriate, discussing with the interested [party] the questions that remain open, so as to be able to reach a full and satisfactory resolution of the problems which originated this painful division.

    3. Declarations on the Shoah.

The positions of Mons. Williamson on the Shoah are absolutely unacceptable and firmly rejected by the Holy Father, as he himself remarked on the past January 28, when, referring to that brutal genocide, he reaffirmed his full and unquestionable solidarity with our Brethren, receivers of the First Covenant, and affirmed that the memory of that terrible genocide must lead "mankind to reflect on the unpredictable power of evil when it conquers the heart of man", adding that the Shoah remains "for all a warning against forgetfulness, against denial or reductionism, because the violence against a single human being is violence against all".

Bishop Williamson, for an admission to episcopal functions in the Church, will also have to distance himself, in an absolutely unequivocal and public manner, from his positions regarding the Shoah, unknown to the Holy Father in the moment of the remission of the excommunication.

The Holy Father asks to be joined by the prayers of all the faithful, so that the Lord may enlighten the path of the Church. May the effort of the Pastors and of all the faithful increase in support of the delicate and burdensome mission of the Successor of Apostle Peter as "custodian of unity" in the Church.

Bishop Hermann: Anger at Obama is anger misdirected...

Bishop Hermann of St. Louis processes at the Installation Mass of Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron last Wednesday.

I saw this probably a week ago, and have not had time to post it. I still don't have time to post it, but I am posting it!!!

Bishop Hermann is the administrator for the Diocese of St. Louis on the interim since Bishop Raymond L. Burke was appointed to head the Apostolic Signatura. You may recall Bishop Hermann by his words at the bishop's conference when he said he would be willing to die to end abortion.

Check this out, if you haven't already seen it...

Bishop Hermann: 'I thought you should know’

By Bishop Robert J. Hermann, Archdiocesan Administrator

January 27, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - I was very edified this past Saturday to see the Cathedral almost filled for the Pro-Life Mass. Then to see such a large contingent, on a very cold day, make a pilgrimage to the abortion clinic, praying the Rosary for Life, was truly heartwarming.

At the very moment I am writing this, our new president, Barack Obama, is being sworn into office. We congratulate him, and we pray for him, but we cannot condone his pro-death policies, even while we are happy that so many people feel they have new hope. We must do everything we can to oppose his pro-death-to-children efforts.

Joseph Bottum, in an article entitled "Abortion after Obama," writing in the January 2009 edition of First Things, pages 13-15, tells us, "Now the 2008 election has brought us the presidency of Barack Obama, the most consistent supporter of legalized abortion ever nominated by a majority party."

When asked about making decisions as to when a baby gets human rights, President Obama answered that "is above my pay grade." He also stated that he would not want his daughters "punished with a baby."

He has made it known that, upon taking office, he will remove all federal restrictions on funding embryonic stem-cell research. He also intends to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. Seldom has our nation ever been confronted with such an extreme measure. The Freedom of Choice Act will invalidate for the entire country all restrictions on abortion before viability, including parental notification, waiting periods and partial-birth abortion bans. President Obama has no problem supporting legislation that would even kill a child who survived a botched abortion.

If at this stage our anger is directed at President Obama, our anger is misdirected. Obama is not the enemy. He needs and deserves our prayers, not our condemnation.

As Catholics, we are not guiltless. It seems to me that when President Kennedy compromised Catholic teachings and accommodated political pressures in order to be elected to the highest office in the land, he set the tone for many Catholic leaders to follow and to compromise their Catholic principles to get ahead.

In our Supreme Court and in our Congress, we have a plethora of so-called Catholics who are failing to live their Catholic identity. Over 50 percent of our electorate voted for a president who is one of the most pro-culture-of-death candidates from a major party to run for the highest office of the land.

Yes, we can thank one-half of our Catholics for bailing out on their faith!

After almost 50 years of having 50 percent of Catholics abandoning their Catholic identity, we cannot expect to turn this culture around by short-term political efforts.

In order to bring about a transformation from a culture of death to a culture of life, we have to restore our Catholic identity.

This means that all of us, as Catholics, have to undergo a profound transformation. It means that we have to take a good look at every facet of our Catholic life, including the serious study of life issues, the regular and devout use of our Sacramental system, especially the devout and weekly attendance at Mass, the regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the devout praying of the daily Rosary, and then the faithful, loving and firm witness to lax Catholics about our Catholic beliefs and practices.

We have to live our lives in such a way that we will be unafraid to witness to what we believe and live.

I may courageously say that I am willing to die to end abortion, but am I equally willing to say that I am ready to let my ego get ruffled daily for the same cause? Yet … that is where I need to arrive if I am to be a credible witness.

What a glorious opportunity we all have to make a difference in the pro-life cause. Until we are willing to be politically incorrect in order to be biblically correct, we will never convince anyone that our religion is worth living.

It does not take 100 percent of our Catholics to transform this country. If 75 percent of our Catholics were steeped in Catholic identity, the abortion issue would be over for our entire country. We have many, many evangelicals on our side in the culture of life. Look at how many more of them would flock to our side if we really lived our Catholic teachings! They, too, are looking for changeless principles lived out in practice.

But there is more! Our laxity in living our Catholic life has blinded us into not seeing the role of Satan in the culture of death. Satan is having a heyday in our midst, because he has managed to remain invisible in the culture of death, and our laxity has granted him that luxury. Since we are not steeped in the Word of God as we should be, we do not recognize his darkness in our society. Our first reading from Hebrews tells us, "The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart."

St. Paul tells us that our warfare is not against flesh and blood but against the power and principles of darkness. He also tells us that we should not let the sun go down upon our anger so as to give Satan a foothold. These readings are wake-up calls for us all. I bring this up deliberately, because I do not want us to fall into Satan's trap of getting us to hate President Obama or any of the pro-choice Catholic legislators in Congress. Being pro-life means that we engage far more in spiritual warfare than in political warfare.

That Satan is very alive in influencing all of us is his best-kept secret. Becoming steeped in the Word of God and the teachings of the Catholic Church exposes his evil machinations.

President Obama, pro-choice legislators and Planned Parenthood are not our enemies. Our enemies are the invisible forces masked behind these people. Most of them do not have a clue that they are being deceived by our common enemy, the devil. They are used by our common enemy, Satan, and his evil forces, to get us to hate so that we, too, will end up in a culture of death. President Obama and all pro-choice and pro-abortion legislators, as well as members supporting Planned Parenthood (and we have in our own state a national legislator who has received over $900,000 from groups that advocate for abortion rights) — these are not our enemies. They are used by the evil one to get us to hate them in our efforts to be pro-life and thereby ditch our pro-life efforts. We cannot fall for that trap!

We owe all of them prayers and fasting for their conversion. At one point, Gov. Reagan was California's very pro-abortion governor. Yet he became a very pro-life president. He repented and regretted the evil he supported.

We must bravely witness against supporting pro-choice and pro-abortion candidates in political elections, but pray daily for their conversion.

This is a great time to be a Catholic. This is a great time to witness to such a clear choice, the choice of Christ or the anti-Christ.

We have only one life to live, and Jesus is it!

If our focus consists only in counting votes, we will be discouraged. If our focus is on giving ourselves and our activities totally to Christ so that He can use our witnessing as He wishes, our hearts will be throbbing and radiating with life and joy.

This is a great time to wake up from our slumber of simply calling ourselves Catholic, and wage war against the forces of darkness in ourselves first and then in our culture, a culture which is resting on the premise that God does not exist.

Our actions and our lifestyles have to radiate the inner presence of Christ in the home and in the marketplace.

This is a glorious day and a glorious opportunity for any follower of Christ! We need to recover our Catholic identity, and we can do it!

    FOCA or Prevention First Act?

Interesting article at Catholic News Agency:

‘Prevention First Act’ greater threat than FOCA, pro-lifers warn

Washington DC, Feb 4, 2009 / 07:05 am (CNA).- Some pro-life leaders warn that activism against the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is distracting attention from its “evil twin,” the Prevention First Act (PFA). The PFA provides more taxpayer funding for contraception and abortion and contains coercive elements which could deny federal funding to some pro-life hospitals.

Patrick Daub, writing in the American Life League’s Nov. 19 STOPP Report, said that the PFA would make Title X family planning a permanent program and fund it at $700 million or more. In 2008 it received only $300 million.

Title X is a major source of funding for Planned Parenthood. In 2008 the organization received about 25 percent of the total funding, $75 million. Under the new rules, it could receive $175 million.

At present, Title X is a temporary program which must be renewed every year.

PFA would mandate that health insurance programs that cover prescriptions must cover abortifacient contraceptives.

According to Daub, the proposal would create a government program to promote abortifacient “emergency contraception” and would deny federal funding to hospitals which do not provide “emergency contraception” to rape victims.

Further, it would provide significant funding for “comprehensive” sex education programs like those promoted by Planned Parenthood and specifically exclude “abstinence-only” programs from its budget. The PFA would also permanently include “family planning services” as part of the Medicaid program.

The PFA was introduced in the last Congressional session and was reintroduced for the present Congressional session on Jan. 6 by Sen. Harry Reid under the bill number S. 21.

“We have been warning the entire pro-life movement that this would be a priority, and now we see it in black and white on the official White House web site’s women’s issues page,” commented Judy Brown, President of the American Life League.

“If we might repeat ourselves, this bill is FOCA's evil twin. It has now been introduced and is getting up steam. Yet few speak of it; in fact, nobody in the pro-life movement’s leadership – other than American Life League and our Stop Planned Parenthood division – has found it worthy of notice.”

Dr. William E. May, Senior Fellow of the Culture of Life Foundation, also commented on the bill, arguing “The Act is based on the false premise that contraception prevents abortion. The more contraception is available, the more abortions occur because contraception is the gateway to abortion.”

May’s statement argued that most abortions occur “because men and women do not want to have a baby but nonetheless have sexual intercourse.”

“Contraception facilitates premarital sex and has led to an alarming increase of sexually transmitted diseases,” May claimed.
